5 Businesses You Need When Moving House

Moving house is a stressful experience.

And with such an extensive task list, there will inevitable be some things you forget to do.

Whether it’s getting your post redirected, or taking out home insurance on your new investment, you want to make sure that you tick all of those important boxes.

If you’re at a loss for where to start, here are five companies you should keep in mind to help your next move go smoothly.

  • Royal Mail

So much of our correspondence is now digital that it can be easy to forget to change your address for companies that still send out physical post.

Luckily Royal Mail have a handy redirect service that will buy you a little more time when it comes to notifying everyone that you’ve moved.

Depending on how organised (or disorganised) you are, you can opt for a redirect of 3, 6 or 12 months.

  • Pickfords

The thought of packing up your life and moving it to a new location can be a daunting one, especially if you’ve been at your current address for a long time.

Pickfords have been perfecting the art of property removals for over 400 years. They’ll pack up your belongings and move them to you new location, wherever your postcode might be.

Take the some of the stress out moving day by hiring someone to do the heavy lifting for you.

  • We Buy Any Stairlift

Whether you needed a stairlift in your previous home and want to save the new owners the trouble of removing it, or are moving into a home that has a stairlift you have no use for, setting your hallway right can be a daunting task.

If it’s undertaken by amateurs, your interiors can be left in a mess. To ensure that your home is as good as new, use an expert company like We Buy Any Stairlift. Not only will they remove the stairlift for you, but they’ll make sure that it finds a new home.

  • Petlog

When you move house, it’s important to consider your four-legged friends. Your cats and dogs should be microchipped with your details and address.

As soon as you move you should change your address to ensure that should they wander, they’re returned to you safe and sound.

Check in with a company such as Petlog for microchip, pet, and moving advice, as well as registering your new details.

  • Compare the Market

Home insurance is a must – you’ll probably never need it, but it’s a sensible idea to ensure you have a plan in place, just in case you do.

It can be tricky to know which company have the best deal, so with a comparison site, such as Compare the Market, you’ll be able to find the best deal on building and contents cover.

Who knew meerkats were so clever!

Could becoming a home and pet sitter boost your retirement income?

The cost of living is going up with energy, fuel and food prices all rising leading to many people being concerned about their finances. With inflation expected to hit 7% by spring[i] the crisis may get worse, before it gets better. For retired people on a fixed pension income this can be worrying as there are limited to opportunities for retired people to add to their income.

One solution however is for them to become home and pet sitters who are employed to look after people’s homes and pets when they are away. Most of our homesitters are retired people in their 50s,60s and 70s who want to remain active and fill their retirement with new experiences.

Our homesitters can boost their pension income because they can make savings on their own household utility bills when they are on assignments, and they receive a modest remuneration.

One retired couple who have been home and pet sitting through us since they retired are Peter and Julie Barnes from Gloucestershire who are both in their 60s. They typically earn around £180 as a couple for a two-week homesit, plus they get reimbursed for mileage at 45p per mile when they travel to and from the assignment and they get a daily food allowance.

The fees vary depending on how many pets are involved and the length of the assignment, however this extra income comes in handy with the Barnes’ saying they tend to save it up for holidays.  However, money wasn’t their main motivation for becoming homesitters it was the benefits of the role that appealed.  Prior to retirement Peter spent many years in the Armed Forces, before leaving to work in the printing industry. Julie was a swimming coach and a manager at a large leisure centre in Gloucester. The couple wanted to do something adventurous in their retirement. Peter was keen to get a dog, but the couple also wanted to travel, which would be difficult with a pet.  Peter remembered seeing an advert for Homesitters Ltd in a magazine and realised the role could offer the perfect solution. One of their favourite parts of the job is to travel and exploring new places. The couple especially love to spend time in the countryside because they enjoy walking and wildlife spotting.

Julie says, “We do a lot of homesits around the Cotswolds near where we live and really enjoy going to different places. Even if we’re only going thirty miles or so from our home, it is often to somewhere we haven’t heard of before! There’s a limited amount of exploring you can do while you’re working and we’re really enjoying discovering new places.” The couple love to spend time with pets and both enjoy combining a long dog walk in the country with a pub lunch.

Peter says, “We can’t help but fall in love with the pets – they all have different characters. We looked after two black Labradors who loved to play in the snow and a beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback who would sit and watch us read. We even looked after a parrot who would mimic Julie’s voice so I would think she was in the room talking to me!” “We keep a travel journal to remind us of all the wonderful places we’ve been, the pets we’ve looked after and the people we’ve met.”

If you are looking for an interesting and fulfilling way to spend your retirement, as well as boost your pension income, we are currently on a recruitment drive. We have assignments across the UK and offer flexible employment which can fit around other commitments.

One of the best things about working through us is all our homesitters are employed by us (rather than being self-employed) which means they benefit from support from our team when on assignment. We also organise all the assignments, including arranging the preliminary meeting with clients prior to a homesitters agreeing to take a job. All homesitters are fully insured through our company too. If this sounds appealing, please get in touch, here.

TIBCO Continues Successful Partnership with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team

TIBCO has announced its ongoing partnership with the recently crowned eight-time FIA Formula One World Constructors’ Champions, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. Over the past season, the F1 team expanded its use of TIBCO Spotfire in race simulations that influence up-to-the-minute car setup and configuration decisions. The team also expanded its use of the TIBCO Cost Visualiser Tool for detailed cost-value analysis across engineering and finance data sources to comply with FIA cost cap regulations. Both technologies play key roles in the design, development, and engineering behind the all-new Mercedes-AMG F1 W13 EQ Performance vehicle.

“It was a challenging year for all teams, with a host of COVID protocols, new regulations, a series of new circuits, and a packed calendar that placed enormous pressure on everyone. As the season came down to the wire, the team’s use of digital twins and race simulations played a critical role in optimising car performance, and securing crucial championship points in a highly competitive environment,” said Michael O’Connell, chief analytics officer, TIBCO.

“The entire TIBCO team would like to congratulate the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team for an incredible season and clinching its eighth consecutive FIA Formula One World Constructors’ Championship.”

The companies forged an ongoing partnership in innovation on and off the track, with TIBCO Spotfire continuing to enable the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team’s understanding of the factors affecting car performance, and enabling car configuration updates throughout the race weekend. With new and modified circuits, the digital-twin-based simulations played a crucial role in the team’s success. The team used Spotfire to analyse the simulations and assess the effects of tunable car configuration parameters, including suspension, rear and front wings, and aerodynamics, on car performance. Working with digital twins of the cars, the team ran millions of simulations, using combinations of the tunable parameters to assess the cars’ performance at the tracks. The simulation results were then used to set up the cars and to configure them throughout the race weekend. This evolving car setup and configuration was of central importance to car performance, especially in the last set of races in the Americas and the Middle East, in a highly competitive battle for the championship.

“Racing has become so much more than just the car. We need to provide our drivers with all the information they need to get the best out of the car on that day, that circuit, and in those conditions, which all comes from data,” said Michael Taylor, IT director, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

“Our partnership with TIBCO has become even more important as we use data to create a better view of each race through simulations. The TIBCO Cost Visualiser Tool also offers insights into the value and cost from design to manufacturing to on-track performance, giving us an overall edge when it comes to planning and execution for each race, and across the season.”

Heras launches new and upgraded products

Heras has announced the launch of the new Delta sliding gate and a significant change to its flagship B700 turnstile as part of a plan to strengthen its core product range of permanent perimeter protection and entrance control solutions in the UK.

The Doncaster-based company recently announced a move to a simplified range of solutions, and the introduction of the Delta sliding gate and enhancements to the B700 turnstile are the first changes to its product portfolio to be unveiled.

Heras – which is Europe’s leading end-to-end supplier of permanent and mobile perimeter protection solutions – is targeting sales of both Delta and B700 to sites such as warehousing hubs, data centres, food processing and distribution centres, healthcare facilities, and manufacturing plants that need secure access points to their sites.

Product Manager Jonathan Broughton said that Heras has acted quickly following its Europe-wide product review last year to identify sales growth opportunities, and the modular nature of the Delta gate makes it an ideal option.

He said: “Delta is one of the best-selling sliding gates across Europe, and its introduction into the UK will be a great platform from which to work closely with site owners and operators who want to improve the opening and closing speed of sliding gates, cut costs for repairing gates that have been struck by vehicles and reduce unauthorised site breaches at entrance points.”

Delta sliding gates

Delta comes in two models and has opening widths ranging from 3 m to 9.5 m for single gates or 6 m to 19 m for the double-gate option. Its gate heights range from 1.8 m to 2.5 m, and it is one of the fastest sliding gates on the market at a rate of up to 0.5 m per second for each gate, providing a possible speed of 1 m per second on double gates.

Heras sees the speed capability as a definite unique selling point for Delta. After all, whenever an entrance is open, the security of the premises is momentarily compromised. The faster the gate can open and close, the less waiting time for the user and the overall quicker resumption of optimum security. Of course, the notable extra speed doesn’t compromise safety, as Delta is also fully compliant with safety standard EN 12453:2017+A1:2021, and a raft of safety features are inbuilt accordingly.

The modularity of Delta poses a trio of secret weapons for operators and installers alike. The first is that it has an aluminium under beam with a steel frame and steel bars, making it a lightweight solution compared to other gate systems – this means there’s no heavy lifting equipment required to install Delta. For example, it can be easily installed in less-accessible areas, such as underground car parks.

The second is that component parts of the sliding gate can be replaced – instead of having to replace a complete unit in the event of being struck and damaged by vehicles entering or leaving sites such as warehouses and distribution hubs, which have HGVs entering and leaving round the clock.

The final key modular benefit is the ease with which a gate once installed can be serviced or upgraded, as most components can be individually replaced.

Delta can also be included in Connect, a cloud-based portal that offers real-time insights into the status of entrance control systems, with remote monitoring of user access and automatic alerts and notifications via smartphone, tablet or PC. Connect also enables users to open access systems via mobile phone, as well as enables Heras to provide remote and proactive monitoring of the systems.

B700 turnstile

B700 is already Heras’s best-selling turnstile and is installed at Premier League football stadiums, the distribution hubs of the UK’s leading supermarkets, contact centres for banks and refineries for leading names in the petrochemical industry. It’s also used at breweries that produce probably the best lager and dry stout in the world!

Key features of B700 include its canopy – which acts as a physical and visual deterrent at perimeter breach points – and its availability as a single 120° rotor spacing with a straight or trombone arm in a variety of finishes (galvanised, coated or stainless steel). Also, its operation and control features include a robust steel electro-mechanical head mechanism that has a number of security locking options. The locking options in tandem with sensors provide feedback for monitoring access control systems – which means that in the event that the turnstile will not rotate, it is possible to test the system using a card reader isolation and test key switch for a quick fault diagnosis.

Like Delta, B700 can also be included in Connect, which provides information about the status of entrance solutions provided by Heras (and other suppliers). It monitors all key components 24/7 and translates this monitoring into practical information for facilities managers.

Mr Broughton added: “The last few months have seen lots of positive, product-focused changes at Heras, which are enabling us to help businesses protect their sites and have improved entrance control management.”

Retirement rental apartments in Peterborough set for a busy year as retirees choose city living in 2022

A report at the end of last year by think-tank the Social Market Foundation[i] suggested people should be helped to spend their later years in urban retirement housing in towns and city centres rather than heading for the coast or countryside. They highlight that people benefit from urban living with better public services, as well as better health outcomes and less loneliness.

Nygel Scourfield, Chief Executive of retirement brand, My Future Living agrees and adds that urban living is not just for young people, it’s for older people who want access to a vibrant social life with restaurants, theatres and attractions on their doorstep.

My Future Living specialises in good quality, affordable retirement rental apartments located in modern purpose-built developments for people with the majority located in towns and cities, including Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, popular with older people.

Scourfield says, “Smaller cities such as Peterborough can offer retirees the best of both worlds as it’s a busy and attractive cathedral city, with easy access to the countryside and even the beaches of Norfolk in the east of the UK.

The city even has its own embankment on the River Nene which is a great place to visit and sit by the water’s edge[ii], enjoy local food and drink and attend many of the live events and markets are held here[iii].

“Being fairly central in the UK people can visit Birmingham and London easily if they want bigger city action or access to international airports, but it offers more affordable retirement properties. We expect smaller cities like Peterborough to be in high demand this year as more people plan to move to a retirement home now the pandemic is waning.”

The benefits of renting in a retirement community include enabling people to free up capital if they own a home to spend or invest in retirement, being maintenance free and living in a sociable community of likeminded people.

Retirement apartments are designed for independent living for people over 55 years old, but with a 24-hour careline in every apartment for reassurance and a development manager onsite. The monthly rent includes services and maintenance.

My Future Living currently has two lovely apartments available in Homenene House close to local amenities including the Ortongate Shopping Centre, and opposite a bus stop with buses to central Peterborough. One is on the first floor and the other on the second floor and the monthly rent is £650. Both are available on a short term or long term assured tenancy.

Facilities include a communal lounge with snooker table where people can meet and enjoy a drink together, as well as events such as coffee mornings and bingo, a lift, a laundry and guest suite plus communal gardens.

Social and Sustainable Capital seeks housing charities in Southwest England to benefit from new £125m housing fund

According to Shelter[i], one in 206 people are homeless in England and every region has its own issues. Bristol recorded the second highest number of street homeless nationally at the 2020 national Rough Sleeper Street count and was one of two cities outside London with the highest number of people in temporary accommodation. Gloucester and Torbay rank behind Bristol with the highest rates of homeless in the Southwest.

Social and Sustainable Capital (SASC), an award-winning social investment firm, which specialises in investments in charities and social enterprises involved in housing wants to help social sector organisations to address these challenges.

This spring, SASC is launching a new £125m housing fund – Social and Sustainable Housing II (SASH II) – and seeking borrowers in southwest England.

A particular focus are charities in this region involved in homelessness, domestic violence, or work with asylum seekers, young people, and those with addiction or mental health issues.

This will be SASC’s second housing fund which was designed in partnership with charities to meet their specific financial needs.

SASH I raised almost £75m and, so far, has provided £50m of secured loans to 16 UK housing charities. This has turned many of these social sector organisations into property owners for the first time and increased their financial resilience by putting over 625 beds into their ownership.

In March, SASC’s Business Development Manager, Miki Vyse, will spend two week touring the Southwest to find new borrowers.

Miki wants to meet with charities working in housing, housing associations, local MPs, support services organisations and other interested parties to discuss the new fund, how it works, and the benefits it could offer social sector organisations in the region.

Miki Vyse says, “With the launch of SASH II this spring, we want to engage charities and social enterprises in the Southwest who want to increase their provision of safe, quality homes and support for the vulnerable people they serve.

“I am really looking forward to touring the Southwest in early March starting in Bath and Bristol. I will be attending The Bath Sleep-Out organised by Julian House in Alice Park on Friday 4th March and will be raising money for the charity and meeting with the organisers. I will then move on to Plymouth on 15th March, then Cornwall and finally Exeter.”

“Our intention has always been to spread the fund across the UK and support organisations from a range of sectors and a range of localities. The Southwest is expansive region with a diverse population and homelessness is a major issue for cities like Bristol and rural areas including in Cornwall – we are looking forward to engaging with organisations right across the region.”

If you are a charity interested in finding out more about social investment and would like to arrange a meeting Miki Vyse, please contact her on: miki@socialandsustainable.com
