Morris Lubricants team take on Longmynd Hike challenge for Hope House

Four colleagues from a leading British oil and lubricant manufacturer have chosen a new challenge to support Hope House Children’s Hospice.

The team from Morris Lubricants in Shrewsbury will take on the 50-mile Longmynd Hike competition over the weekend of October 7 and 8 which involves climbing more than 8,000 feet, covering eight summits, in under 24 hours.

Chief Operations Officer Owen Lloyd, will be joined by Kim Mamaras from the manufacturing site, Russell Fox, who is one of long-distance delivery drivers and Joe Fox from the logistics planning team.

These men will all be putting their bodies to the test to raise money for Hope House, the company’s adopted charity.

The route is not for the faint hearted and follows a set figure-of-eight over the rugged countryside of South Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. The start at Church Stretton is at 1pm on Saturday, October 7 and the objective is to complete the course in under 24 hours.

The Morris Lubricants’ team is looking forward to the challenge across some of the UK’s most picturesque landscape, whilst raising much-needed funds for Hope House, a children’s hospice in Morda, near Oswestry.

This is not Owen and Kim’s first time at pushing their bodies to the limits in order to complete a charity challenge.

Last year, they were part of the Morris Lubricants cycle team that raised £3,500 for Hope House on a 125-mile sponsored cycle. It was one of a wide range of imaginative ideas during 2022 that helped Morris Lubricants raise £13,842 for the charity.

Andrew Goddard, Morris Lubricants’ Executive Chairman, said: “The Longmynd Hike is a phenomenal undertaking by the four men. If 50 miles in 24 hours was not enough, you also have to factor in the unforgiving terrain and the weather conditions.

“The money they raise on this challenge will go towards the company’s continuing support for Hope House, an organisation that provides such important care to children, young people and their families.”

Morris Lubricants is one of Europe’s leading independent oil, lubricant and grease suppliers, proudly exporting Union Jack stamped products to more than 90 countries around the globe. The company has been manufacturing in Shrewsbury for more than 150 years.

Bekki Fardoe, area fundraiser for Hope House, said: “We are extremely grateful for the continued support that we have received from Morris Lubricants since partnering together as their chosen charity for 2022/23.”

“Employees from Morris Lubricants have taken part in various fundraising activities and are always up for a challenge in order to raise money for the seriously ill children and families that we care for.”

“They have raised the bar again with their latest challenge, the 50-mile Longmynd Hike! It will be an incredibly tough challenge, both mentally and physically, but I have no doubt they will conquer it. Everyone at Hope House and Ty Gobaith will be cheering them on.”

Donations to this fantastic cause can be made on the Morris Lubricants’ JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/page/morris-lubricants-uk-1693994222514 .

The Future of Communication: Exploring the Potential of SMS API Solutions

Communication, as the bedrock of human connection and business operations, is always evolving.

From the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt to today’s instant messaging apps, humanity’s quest to share ideas has remained relentless. Yet, even in our digital age, an older form of communication – SMS – is undergoing a renaissance. With the integration of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), SMS is offering ground-breaking opportunities for businesses and individuals alike. Let us dive into the exciting potential of SMS API solutions and their role in shaping the future of communication.

Revolutionizing Business Outreach

In an era dominated by social media and email, one might assume SMS to be obsolete. However, studies have shown that SMS boasts a whopping 98% open rate, making it the champion in ensuring your message gets seen. By integrating SMS API, businesses can automate and personalize text messages, ensuring customers receive relevant, timely, and engaging content. Whether it is a personalized discount offer or an appointment reminder, SMS APIs allow businesses to communicate more effectively, fostering stronger customer relationships and ensuring higher conversion rates.

Bringing Seamless Integration to Apps and Platforms

The beauty of an API is its ability to serve as a bridge, connecting different platforms and applications. SMS APIs act as this bridge for text messaging, allowing developers to embed SMS functionalities within their apps without starting from scratch. This seamless integration means that companies can enhance user experience by offering in-app SMS features. Imagine a fitness app that sends motivational texts to users or a banking app that instantly notifies a user of a transaction. The possibilities are vast and are only limited by the developer’s creativity.

Empowering Global Connectivity

With mobile phones being ubiquitous globally, SMS offers an unrivalled potential to connect with individuals across different regions and demographics. All of this can further be amplified by offering capabilities like bulk messaging and language translation. Businesses can thus establish a global presence, reaching out to audiences in various corners of the world with localized and relevant messages. In a world where rapid and effective communication is paramount, SMS API solutions promise to bridge gaps and foster global ties.

Enhancing Security and Authentication

In our digitized world, security concerns are on the rise. Two-factor authentication (2FA) has become a standard, and here, SMS shines bright. By leveraging SMS APIs, platforms can automate 2FA processes, sending real-time verification codes to users. Not only does this step up security, but it also simplifies the user journey. With potential advancements in encryption and security protocols for SMS, we can expect an even more fortified digital landscape in the coming years.

Promoting Sustainable Communication

In a world increasingly concerned with environmental sustainability, the digital realm offers a respite from the piles of paper and waste associated with traditional communication methods. SMS, being a digital medium, already contributes to this eco-friendly shift. Integrating SMS APIs can take sustainability a notch higher. For instance, businesses can utilize this for digital receipts, cutting down the need for printed paper slips. Event organizers can send e-tickets via text messages, reducing the carbon footprint associated with physical ticket production and delivery.

As SMS does not require users to be on a high-speed internet connection, the energy consumption is considerably lower than other online communication tools. Thus, by adopting SMS API solutions, organizations can not only streamline their communication processes but also champion a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach. This alignment with global sustainability goals ensures that businesses remain relevant, responsible, and revered in today’s eco-conscious marketplace.

Final Thoughts

The future of communication lies not just in introducing new channels but in optimizing and integrating existing ones. SMS, often mistakenly regarded as a relic of the past, is proving to be a formidable player in this future landscape, especially when combined with the capabilities of APIs. From enhancing business outreach and user experience to fostering global connectivity and tightening digital security, the potential of SMS API solutions is vast and largely untapped. As we hurtle towards an even more interconnected world, it is essential for businesses and individuals to recognize and harness the power of these solutions, ensuring communication remains both meaningful and effective.

5 Hidden Barriers Every Disabled Candidate Has To Overcome

As the UK celebrated National Inclusion Week, Evenbreak, the world’s first global disability job board run by and for disabled people, spoke to its team and discussed the hidden barriers that every disabled candidate has to overcome.

Each and every disability is different and comes with different challenges, so Evenbreak has put together five consistent issues that able people wouldn’t think twice about to highlight the added pressures and challenges that disabled candidates face on a daily basis.

1 – To Disclose Or Not To Disclose – This conundrum came up consistently. There was a general acknowledgement that candidates felt the recruiter would be put off from putting you forward if they knew you were disabled. So at what point in the job application or once started (if ever); and worried what people will think and / or assume once you have and the likely negative consequences, such as can’t do the job as well as others who are ‘non disabled’ or getting special treatment (which isn’t the case). From a YouGov poll we did with 3000 candidates, we found that 23% felt that mentioning their disability would put them at a disadvantage, 24% said a lack of self-confidence and 18% said they did not face any barriers to work at all.

2 – Presumptions and Preconceptions – Often people living with a disability are not spoken to as individuals about their needs and any challenges, a lot of things are presumed or preconceived. This may come from a place of fear from the employer for asking the wrong question, but it can do real harm to the candidate. These presumptions about what a disabled candidate is capable of, plus the unhelpful questions that come out of that can be extremely damaging to a person’s professional confidence. There are far more benefits to employing somebody living with a disability and employers need to understand this. Problem solving, creativity and exceptional project management skills to name just three.

The government this week (26th September 2023) has launched a campaign that should help such candidates. Titled “Ask, Don’t Assume” which aims to raise awareness of the everyday assumptions faced by disabled people and offers practical guidance for allies who are keen to do the right thing.

3 – Each Stage Of The Process Has Issues For Different People – Clearly every disability is unique, so each stage of the traditional recruitment process can be hugely challenging for individuals. Candidates with hearing problems will naturally struggle with telephone interviews for example, so employers need to be flexible about their processes so they don’t cause unnecessary anxiety for disabled candidates.

4 – The Added Time And Energy – Able bodied candidates don’t ever have to think about the added time and energy that not only goes into an interview, but also the role itself. Navigating the world of work with all of its complexities as a disabled person can be hugely daunting and there are so many obstacles and potential barriers, it can be difficult to overcome.

5 – One Size Does Not Fit All – The lack of awareness of a condition or disability and then making assumptions that are most often incorrect. Employers can be naive and lack the understanding that people can have varying levels of disability and therefore need in a workplace and one size does not fit all.

If you’re a disabled candidate looking for work or you are an employer that needs educating on the best ways to attract and retain disabled candidates, visit the Evenbreak website for more advice.

Are Employers Doing Enough to Prevent Work Induced Hearing Problems?

Hearing related issues as the result of working in noisy environments is a problem. Some 1 in 8 people in the UK have been diagnosed with tinnitus, but over half have experienced related symptoms at some stage, according to statistics from Bodytrak.

The HSE estimates that around 17,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, tinnitus or other hearing related problems as a direct result of working on a noisy environment.

And noisy environments are by no means limited to the ones we typically think of, such as construction and warehouse work.

In fact, amongst the noisiest working environments and roles are:

  • Nightclub workers
  • Live music venue workers
  • Stewards and other staff working in sports venues such as football stadia
  • People working on runways and close to aircraft in airports
  • Musicians
  • Dentists (the sounds made by dental drills can be as loud as 90 dB)

So are we doing enough as employers? Well let’s look at what you can do to help prevent work induced hearing problems:

  • Use quieter equipment or modify your processes where possible. Look for the quietest equipment available to carry out the task and consider the introduction of policies around equipment buying in your business that look at low noise as a priority feature
  • Fit silencers to equipment wherever possible
  • Plan your workplace so machinery that’s constantly running is further away from your workers
  • Limit the amount of time your employees spend in noisy areas – hearing issues are caused by prolonged periods of exposure to loud noises
  • Ensure you provide all of the appropriate hearing protection – but also make sure your staff know how to use it properly, that it fits prooperly and consider the introduction of a policy to ensure staff are using their safety and protection equipment properly
  • Provide frequent hearing tests for staff who are exposed to loud noises
  • Ensure you carry out frequent risk assessments

Always follow HSE guidance in terms of your responsibilities to your employees.

It’s also important to encourage your staff to report any changes in hearing or related hearing problems at the earliest opportunity.

While some working environments are noisy by nature, taking steps to reduce the noise where possible, protect the hearing of your staff and adapt the layout of your working premises to reduce exposure to the noisiest equipment, you can help to reduce the risk of your employees joining the 17,000 or so who’ve already experienced hearing loss or tinnitus as the result of their work.

Hybrid Working: The Youngest People in the Workforce Value Time in an Office

The youngest employees in the workforce are leading the charge towards hybrid work. A recent study by Boundless found that only 19% of workers aged 16 to 24 want to work from home exclusively, while 62% opt for hybrid work.

The study polled over 2,000 people over the age 16 in the UK. Amongst the many findings, Boundless discovered that of those who have jobs where working from home is very practical and possible, little over a quarter (27%) would actually choose to work from home all the time. At the same time just 17% said they would choose to work from an office the whole week.

But a majority cited some sort of hybrid approach as their preferred working option – coupling time in the office with time spent working remotely each week.

It was when the study delved into age groups that we got real insight into how important an office location is for younger workers.

Working from home exclusively was most unpopular with those aged 16 to 24, of whom just 19% would want to work from home exclusively – the lowest proportion of any age group.

In that age group, 62% of study participants opted for hybrid working.

Again, this makes the youngest employees the ones who are most likely to want this flexibility:

At the other end of the scale, of those aged 55 and over, a third would choose to work from home the whole week, highlighting the need for flexibility and the ability for your workforce to be location flexible. The results of the survey pitch a real argument for hybrid by default in businesses where workers do not physically need to be on the premises to do their job. By allowing employees to choose their working location and to switch between home and office, you cater to the needs and wants of a diverse workforce.

Random Number Generators in the Crypto World

Random Number Generators (RNGs) are an essential yet often overlooked component of digital technologies. While their use in gaming and online experiences may be more commonly recognised, their role in the world of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology is vital for secure, transparent, and efficient transactions. This article delves into the complexities and applications of RNGs in the crypto universe, moving beyond the surface to offer a nuanced understanding of this crucial technology.

The Core Mechanics of RNGs

At its essence, a Random Number Generator is an algorithm designed to produce sequences of numbers or symbols that cannot be practically predicted. In cryptography, RNGs are used to generate keys that secure data and ensure confidentiality. For example, RNGs are at work when you execute a Bitcoin transaction. They create cryptographic keys that safeguard the transaction from fraud or tampering. The quality of randomness is vital; inadequate randomness can compromise the entire security infrastructure. As the technology matures, RNGs are also evolving to adapt to new cryptographic challenges, incorporating additional layers of security features to defend against emerging threats.

RNGs in Cryptographic Systems

The decentralised nature of blockchain and cryptocurrencies magnifies the importance of secure random number generation. For instance, in Proof of Stake (PoS) systems, RNGs help in the validator selection process. Here, a truly random mechanism ensures the process is fair, mitigating the risk of any single entity taking control of the blockchain. This concept is especially significant as decentralised finance (DeFi) gains traction, requiring highly secure, transparent systems.

Moreover, RNGs are crucial in the creation of digital wallets. Each wallet has a unique public-private key pair, allowing users to securely receive and send cryptocurrencies. The private key is a random number generated by an RNG, and its quality can determine the level of security for a digital wallet.

Beyond the Crypto World: RNGs in Gaming and Other Sectors

RNG technology extends its utility to other digital worlds, notably in gaming and online activities. Take online casinos and slot machines, for instance. Much like online slots machines, these digital versions use a RNG to determine wins and can feature a variety of bonus feature rounds and mini-games for players to enjoy. Third-party authorities independently verify these RNGs to ensure they are as random as possible. This concept perfectly exemplifies how essential RNGs are in maintaining fair and transparent cryptocurrency systems and many other digital experiences.

We can see how trust is built through verified RNGs by drawing a parallel between this and the crypto world. Both sectors leverage algorithms and computational power, although they serve different purposes. For cryptocurrencies, it’s about securing transactions and data; in gaming, it’s about providing a fair experience for users. Artificial intelligence is also coming into play, further enhancing RNGs’ role in decision-making processes and predictive analytics, making the technology even more indispensable in our increasingly digital world.

The Future of RNGs in the Crypto Landscape

As the world of cryptocurrencies evolves, the demand for robust, secure, and efficient RNGs will only grow. Developments like quantum-resistant algorithms and Layer 2 solutions present new challenges and opportunities for random number generation. Innovations are already on the horizon, including the integration of machine learning algorithms to optimise RNG processes.

These next-gen RNGs may redefine how we understand security and trust in digital transactions. Such advancements will likely pave the way for more complex, secure, and efficient blockchain systems, extending their influence beyond the realm of cryptocurrencies into broader applications, much as they already have in other sectors like gaming and AI.

In summary, Random Number Generators are more than mere chance-based activity tools. They are critical to the integrity of various systems, from safeguarding cryptographic transactions to ensuring fairness in digital experiences across sectors. As technology like blockchain and artificial intelligence advances, RNGs will undoubtedly play a more central role in shaping secure, efficient, and equitable digital worlds. Their growing importance extends from enhancing data privacy to optimising machine learning algorithms, ensuring they remain at the forefront of digital innovation.
