AI-enabled TOUGHBOOK G2 revolutionises rugged tablet market

TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 is Panasonic’s first tablet featuring an AI-enabled Intel® processor, whilst offering market-leading customisation and modularity.

Panasonic’s trailblazing approach to redefining what’s possible in the rugged tablet market has been demonstrated with the launch of the TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 – the first TOUGHBOOK tablet to feature AI processing at the edge. The G2mk3 features the Intel® AI Boost neural processing unit (NPU), vastly increasing efficiency and accuracy for mobile workers across industries.

The standalone AI capabilities, without the need for network connectivity, help mobile workers to analyse faults, provide information and complete administrative tasks more quickly. Launched this week at INTERGEO 2024 in Stuttgart – the leading global geoinformation and land management event – the G2mk3 pushes the boundaries in what’s possible from a mobile, rugged device, for any environment, using any application.

Market-leading AI-enabled rugged computing and performance

The first rugged tablet using Windows 11 Pro to offer AI edge processing capabilities, the new 10.1-inch TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 utilises the Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 processor 135U (with Intel vPro® Technology). This features a dedicated AI chipset that enables data to be collected, stored, and analysed using artificial intelligence where a connection to the cloud isn’t available – and without affecting the G2mk3’s overall performance and processing power.

This is particularly useful for workers in utilities – especially those inspecting equipment in remote locations that may not have access to a cellular or wireless connection – to use AI to increase efficiencies, productivity, and reduce human errors in data capture during inspections.

The TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 also features updated 16GB (upgradable to 32GB) DDR5x RAM capabilities. This delivers superior performance and processing speeds that allow hyper-mobile workers to seamlessly and quickly access AI-enabled applications.

Dirk Weigelt, Senior Product & Solutions Manager at Panasonic TOUGHBOOK, said: “Hyper-mobile workers using rugged tablets are often working in challenging, high-pressure environments. They therefore require a versatile, ergonomic, and easy-to-operate device that can simultaneously run mission-critical, data-heavy applications. As Panasonic’s most powerful rugged mobile tablet, the AI-enabled TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 is a game-changer, unlocking new possibilities within rugged mobility.”

New camera increases versatility

The G2mk3’s 13MP rear camera is superior to most other rugged tablet available, and comparable to contemporary consumer devices. Its enhanced sensor delivers better visuals in low-light and mixed light conditions, ideal for capturing high-resolution images in environments where adverse lighting conditions would normally be a problem.

When combined with its edge-AI capabilities, the 13MP camera enables field workers to take advantage of computer vision technology. For example, within electrical field services where field workers have access to wiring diagrams and schematics on the G2mk3, users can use computer vision to accurately see where wiring connections should be – increasing productivity and efficiency.

Backwards compatibility maximises investment

Sustainability and backwards compatibility are key considerations within Panasonic’s strategy when developing new rugged devices. This is evident in the latest TOUGHBOOK G2, with more than 80% of eco system from the first two iterations compatible with the G2mk3. This maximises and protects existing customer investments in the G2 series throughout the entire device lifecycle.

This is crucial in sectors such as emergency services, where existing investments are closely scrutinised. For example, using the same in-vehicle docking platform as the G2mk1 and G2mk2 removes the need to take vehicles off the road for technology refreshes. This reduces vehicle downtime, whilst device familiarity increases efficiencies for emergency services workers when rapid response and triage times are critical.

The latest TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 is still the one of the most customisable, modular rugged tablet available. This is particularly important within the defence sector, with the G2mk3’s top and rear expansion areas accommodating a wide range of peripherals, such as fingerprint readers and MicroSD cards that enhance data and device security, and accessibility, for users in the field.

No compromise on battery life, connectivity, and durability

Notwithstanding its vastly improved camera, a more efficient AI-enabled Intel® CPU, and overall increased performance, the G2mk3 offers 11 hours of battery life from a single battery (with extended battery up to 15 hours) based on MobileMark 25). This represents a up to 47% increase when compared to the G2mk2.

This gives hyper-mobile workers in emergency services, defence, field services, logistics, and surveying complete peace of mind when using power-hungry applications. It also enables them to continue working for longer, maximising efficiency, and productivity when they need it most.

The TOUGHBOOK G2mk3 also features 5G-ready connectivity out of the box, improved Bluetooth capabilities, and market-leading IP65-rated dust and water resistance, independently tested to MIL-STD 810H and IEC 60529 standards.
