Solicitor qualifies at top North Wales legal firm after Australian adventure

A SOLICITOR who was living Down Under is on top after qualifying as a solicitor.

After successfully achieving a Law degree at Cardiff University, Ben Jones decided to reflect on his future and experience more of the world.

What followed was a year in Australia, a spell as a tour guide in Bali and time spent in the London property sector, before he returned home to North Wales with a revitalised attitude towards the legal industry.

Ben, who grew up in Denbigh and attended Ysgol Glan Clwyd in St Asaph, had always wanted to follow in the footsteps of dad David, a partner at QualitySolicitors Edward Hughes.

Following a rigorous three years of exams and training he is able to do so; Ben is now qualified as a solicitor practising family and criminal law at the firm, which has offices in Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.

“Dad was always travelling back and forth to court and police stations, trying to help people and make a difference,” said Ben.

“There were times when I thought about doing other things – particularly in sport as that’s a great passion of mine – but my heart has always been in the law.

“That said, after university I wasn’t completely sure it was the right path for me, so I went to Australia for a year, then Bali and back to London, before realising that I could not let all of my education and training go to waste.

“Becoming a solicitor was the right career for me.”

Ben, a fluent Welsh speaker, then began studying for the LPC (Legal Practice Course) and relevant qualifications in advocacy, professional skills, police station work and client care.

That meant journeying between North Wales, Manchester, Cardiff and his Chester home before receiving confirmation that he passed all the exams to become a fully qualified solicitor.

“I’m absolutely delighted and want to thank everyone at Edward Hughes for the guidance I’ve received, particularly Stephen Warburton and the partners,” said Ben.

“When I returned to education I grew in confidence and learning and working as a trainee at the Rhyl office meant I was getting hands-on experience of the job. That played a big part.”

With the support of girlfriend Christina, who relocated from Canada to Cheshire this year, Ben now hopes to represent the practice at magistrates’ courts from 2020 onwards.

His refreshing attitude to helping others, especially children in care and vulnerable families, reflects the ethos which has seen Edward Hughes remain at the forefront of the law in North Wales for more than 70 years.

“Dealing with cases involving children is tough, the outcomes can be quite stark but there is a flip side to that in being able to help people get their lives back on track,” said Ben.

“I like to listen to people, to be there for them to talk to. Putting the legal issue to the side, if someone is struggling it is human nature to try and be there for them, which I do.

“Sometimes people just need pointing in the right direction, if they’re homeless or vulnerable or in a bad place. We can guide them.”

He added: “I think that’s what this firm is about and why I am so proud to be representing them.

“Edward Hughes has been at the heart of this area for more than 70 years; we are a community firm and its important we help others and retain that identity.”

From deathbed to abundant life, how South Wales life coach Jason defied the odds

South Wales life coach Jason Bishop is celebrating the launch of his new website – but spend a few moments with him and it’s easy to be enthused by his passion for life, his positivity and his knowledge around mental health, too.

Jason is the owner of Contented Life Coaching and offers coaching and support to businesses and individuals across South Wales – but his own story is honest, thought provoking and at times a painful read – on his website, he describes how his descent into alcoholism started from age 15 with the loss of his grandfather, culminating in near death from alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver in his forties.

After leaving hospital, Jason made the conscious choice to turn his life around and now works helping others do the same, changing old belief patterns, tackling stress, anxiety and mental illness and rebuilding relationships using the strategies and therapies that worked for him.  However, he says building the new website, with the help of South Wales Web Solutions, was difficult at times:

“The website meant sharing my story in public, without making that story a book. I found it therapeutic, but on times quite difficult.  I used to be a walking ego, I could see very little good in life. All I managed to achieve was to cause hurt and destruction.

“My recovery meant being completely honest and as well as tackling alcoholism, I worked hard to change my beliefs and to tackle my hidden resentment and anger.  I worked hard to remove any venom that was flowing through me previously, and moved on in my life. There is no way it would have been possible to share my thoughts and inner most feelings with people, if I hadn’t.

“Being genuinely confident without the use of alcohol, has allowed me to do so much more. I’ve addressed my insecurities and feelings of not being enough. It’s also enabled me to create the new life I needed, which incorporates numerous healthy friendships – and I’m hoping that by sharing my story, others will realise I come from a place of humility and support – I’ve been there, so I’m certainly not going to judge anyone.”

As Jason recovered, he engaged a personal trainer and started to love life again, mending relationships and rebuilding his life, and his thoughts turned to sharing what he had learned.  Investing in courses, events, reading and training, Jason cultivated a healthy interest in the latest scientific research, based on brain scans and behaviour (neuroscience), which has been taking place over the last decade or so, and now works with people of all ages, helping them transform their lives, achieve their goals and fulfil their dreams.
“Building Jason’s site was special because we have known him for years and we witnessed his transformation first hand.  His positivity and zest for life is infectious, backed up only by his knowledge on mental health, stress and depression.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking to make a positive life change, whether career, life goals or to tackle long-standing issues like depression – he doesn’t just talk, he has been there and the work he is doing now is incredible.”

Welsh food and drink businesses recognised at Great Taste Awards

Food and drink producers across Wales have been recognised at this year’s Great Taste Awards, proving Wales’ reputation for producing fresh, quality and tasty food and drink products.

174 food and drink businesses of all sizes from across Wales have been named as the top food and drink producers in the world at the awards, which are describes as the ‘Oscars of the food world’. Among them, 12 Welsh products were presented with Great Taste 3-Star awards – the most sought-after seal of approval in the industry and one that only three percent of products are awarded each year.

New Quay Honey Farm / Afon Mêl in Ceredigion was commended for its luxurious, smoky and fermented Heather Mead which received the highest accolade, The Golden Fork Award as well as a 3-Star Great Taste Award.

Halen Môn (Anglesey Sea Salt) collected two 3-Star awards for its smoky Dijon mustard and oak-smoked sea salt.

Additional 3-Star awards went to Slade Farm Organics in south Wales for its pork shoulder, Carmarthen Dairy Products for its soft COPA Blue cheese and whiskey-flavoured ice cream from Ceredigion-based Conti’s Ice Cream.

Five of the Welsh winners were alcoholic beverages and spirits; an ode to the rising and booming drinks sector in Wales. These include Pirate Bay IPA from Cold Black Label, Seidr y Mynydd’s Keeved Bottle-Conditioned Cider, Da Mhile Apple Brandy and Carmarthen-based organic Jin Talog gin.

Congratulating all Welsh food and drink producers and winners of this year’s Great Taste Awards, Andy Richardson, Chair of the Food and Drink Industry Board, said: “As a nation, Wales does food and drink well and it’s evident that the judges feel the same way. As the demand for Welsh products continues to grow I would like to congratulate all the Welsh winners for consistently achieving high standards.”

Since 2014, the food and drink sector in Wales has grown rapidly, with annual sales of £6.8 billion in 2018, putting it well on target to reach the ambitious £7 billion target for 2020, as laid out in the Welsh Government’s action plan for 2014-2020.

Wales is now looking to continue its success with a second stage action plan for 2020-2026 which is being co-created between industry and Welsh Government. Producers, manufacturers and retailers are currently being asked to share their insight and views on the food and drink action plan consultation which will close on October 15th.

All feedback provided will help the Welsh Government and The Food and Drink Wales Industry Board shape the second action plan and will continue to prove Wales’ dedication to producing high quality and globally renowned food and drink products.

Choirs come together for Pancreatic Cancer charity

This October, Barry Male Voice Choir alongside Wessex Male Choir and Côr Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg will be singing side by side to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund (PCRF) at one of Cardiff’s most iconic locations; Llandaff Cathedral.

Every year almost 10, 000 people are diagnosed in the UK alone with pancreatic cancer. The disease has the lowest survival rate of most common cancers and is the 5th most common cause of cancer-related death in the UK. PCRF is the only national charity dedicated exclusively to pancreatic research where income comes entirely from public donations and fundraising.

On October 5th 2019 at Llandaff Cathedral the ‘Choirs in the Cathedral’ gala performance aims to raise much-needed funds and awareness for this very worthwhile charity.

The evening of song will have something for everyone from classic rock and traditional Welsh hymns to opera and modern pop. There is something for everyone to enjoy and sing along to.

“We are extremely excited and honoured to be singing at Llandaff Cathedral with our friends Wessex Male Choir and Côr Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg. This is another chapter to Barry Male Voice Choirs’ long history of singing & fundraising and making new friends along the way. We hope to raise as much money as possible for our chosen charity, Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund and to make sure everyone has a fantastic time in doing so,” said Daniel White, Vice-chairman Barry Male Voice Choir.

2020 Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run date revealed

As the Cardiff Half Marathon takes place this weekend, runners will be excited to learn that organisers of the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run have announced the run will return for 2020 on Sunday 29 March with Velindre NHS University Trust Cancer Charity as the new Lead Charity Partner.

The Cardiff Cancer Centre has joined forces with one of Welsh capital’s most popular 10K races to secure vital fundraising that will help the hospital continue to provide specialist cancer services to over 1.5 million people in South Wales and beyond.

To celebrate the new partnership, runners who want to support Velindre Cancer Centre now have the opportunity to take advantage of an exclusive sign up period.

Entries are now open for Velindre fundraisers for one month only before general sale spaces are released later this year.

If that incentive wasn’t enough to entice potential runners, Velindre Ambassador, inspiring weatherman Derek Brockway will spearhead a group of 100 fundraisers at the event under the ‘Derek’s Dazzlers’ banner.

Full details of this opportunity will follow shortly, but Derek will be looking to motivate, train and support new runners, patients or anybody who wants to take on this new challenge and dazzle their way around 10k of Cardiff’s iconic Bay before joining the group for some well deserved post-race celebrations.

Andrew Morris Head of Fundraising at Velindre said:

“We are absolutely delighted to be the lead charity for the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run . We need to recruit as many runners as possible to turn Cardiff Bay green in support of Velindre so we can continue to provide exceptional care and support to cancer patients and their families in South Wales.

“By 2020 one in two of us will develop cancer which means Velindre needs more funds to continue to support cancer patients and their families through exceptional care. Your donations fund specialist nurses, therapies and ground breaking research and clinical trials. We want to continue to lead in the delivery and development of compassionate, individualised and effective cancer care to achieve outcomes comparable with the best in the world.”

Run 4 Wales Chief Executive Matt Newman said:

“The Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run kicks off the running calendar in style, and we can’t wait to welcome a sea of Velindre runners in their green vests. As a local cancer charity, Velindre is close to our hearts, so this new partnership really is a match made in heaven.”

Law firm donates over £45,000 to 12 local charities

Award winning South Wales law firm, Watkins & Gunn, has been giving back to the local community by donating over £45,000 to 12 different local charities.

Through ‘Watkins & Give’, the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm, it has so far surprised 10 charities with a mystery donation. There are 2 further mystery donations to go over the coming weeks as part of its ’12 days of Giving’ initiative.

With offices in Cardiff, Newport and Pontypool, the firm (with input from the staff) chose 12 local charities – Alzheimer’s Society, City Hospice, Kidney Wales, MIND, Richmond House (Diabetic Centre), Shelter Cymru, Sparkle, Tenovus, The Silverlining Brain Injury  Charity, The Wallich, Wooden Spoon the Children’s Charity of Rugby and Wales Air Ambulance – to receive donations ranging from £2,500 to £5,000.

Staff at the firm have been visiting the charities over the past month taking balloons filled with confetti and a golden ticket to reveal the mystery donation amount.

Natalie Corten, the solicitor at Watkins & Gunn who is championing the charity donations, said:

“We wanted a different and fun way of making the donations, instead of just handing over the standard large sized cheque.

“We came up with the idea of going to each of the charities with an extra-large confetti filled balloon containing a surprise golden ticket (think Willy Wonka!) with the amount of the donation written on it

“As there are 12 charities in total, we have named the project ’12 days of Giving’

“We asked those of our staff with a particular affiliation to the charity concerned to go along to the presentation. We then asked someone from the charity to pop the balloon and read the amount written on the golden ticket to reveal the size of the donation.”

“We chose not to disclose the amount of the donation in advance so that we can capture the moment of surprise!

“This is my first ‘project’ for the firm, and it has been one that I have thoroughly enjoyed. As they say, it is “always nice to be nice”!

Through its ‘Watkins & Give’ initiative, the firm is committed to supporting the local community by fundraising, volunteering, attending charity events and giving pro bono legal advice.

Watkins & Gunn offer a wide range of legal services including Accident Claims, Medical Negligence, Wills and Probate, Employment and HR services, Education Law, Public Law, Business Law, Divorce and Family Law, Childcare Law, Criminal Law, Road Traffic Law and Property.

Deloitte announces new charity partnership with Llamau

Deloitte is continuing the success of One Million Futures, the firm’s social impact initiative, and has today announced the launch of a new charity partnership in Wales.

Deloitte in Wales is now working with Llamau, whose mission is to eradicate homelessness for young people and vulnerable women. The firm will focus on supporting the charity’s Learning 4 Life project, which aims to progress young people aged 16-24 who face complex disadvantages into sustainable employment, volunteering or further education or training.

Deloitte is now midway through its five-year programme to help one million people get to where they want to be through access to education and employment. The firm’s UK-wide initiative has already made an impact for over 475,000 people’s futures while contributing over £10 million to society*.

Much of the impact to date has been delivered through partnerships with over 50 charities, social enterprises and schools across the UK. Initiatives have included nurturing individuals through mentoring and employability skills workshops through to supporting organisations with their strategic ambitions.

Gareth Pritchard, impact partner for Deloitte in Wales, said:

Our new partnership with Llamau will enable our people to get involved in a range of activities to support the charity’s work and its Learning 4 Life project. It’s important to us to make a real impact in our local community and Llamau supports some of the hardest to reach groups in society. Through our partnership, we will help these people access learning and develop new skills.”

Mark Willmore, head of learning, training and employment at Llamau, said:

“We are delighted to be partnering with Deloitte under their One Million Futures social impact initiative.

“Without an education and the confidence to achieve, the young people we support face a future of limited options. At Learning 4 Life, young people can gain the skills and confidence they need for employment, so that they are able to build an independent future for themselves. Last year, 72% of young people supported by Learning 4 Life moved on to further education, employment and training.

“We look forward to working with staff at Deloitte and showcasing how their support will make a direct and positive impact on the lives of the people we support.”

Under its One Million Futures programme, Deloitte in Wales had a three-year partnership with The Prince’s Trust Cymru which has now come to an end. The firm supported the Trust through volunteering, fundraising and providing pro bono services.
