EJ Peak Technology Solutions secures multi-million-pound framework with Yorkshire Water

Yorkshire Water has appointed EJ Peak Technology Solutions, part of the Edwin James Group, to its Motor Control Centres and Systems Integration framework following a competitive tender. The contract will run for an initial period of four years with an optional four-year extension.

Peak has recently opened a new office in Leeds and is now further recruiting in the local area to support the contract.

Projects under the framework will include work on existing Yorkshire Water assets and the integration of new assets into the network, such as PLCs and intelligent motor control centres.

Howden makes experienced appointment in south Wales as Welsh operation continues to grow

HOWDEN, the global insurance group, has welcomed Chris Harvey to its south Wales team in line with its continued growth.

Chris joins the team as commercial account executive, having previously worked in commercial insurance roles at Towergate and Jelf. Most recently, he was a director and shareholder at a Rhondda-based, rapidly expanding family-owned business.

In his new role, Chris will use his wealth of experience to assist commercial and corporate clients with all aspects of their insurances.

On his appointment, Chris said: “I am thrilled to have joined the Howden team in south Wales, at what is a very exciting time for the business’ Welsh presence. I was drawn to Howden due to its customer centricity.

Strategic Leadership Expanded with New Chief of Staff Role at digital learning firm

The new role sees Europe’s fastest-growing digital learning provider, GoodHabitz, further committing to its AI and technology journey

In an innovative move, digital learning provider, GoodHabitz, has created a new role for a member of its Engineering Leadership team. Israel Roldán has become the company’s Chief of Staff, cementing the firm’s long-term strategic commitment to operational effectiveness.

The new role’s purpose is to foster collaboration and drive strategic initiatives across the company, including focusing on AI and data. Roldán is an expert in engineering management, web architecture, software development, strategic communications and product development.

Key to Roldán’s new role is advising the GoodHabitz leadership team while also ‘seeing around corners’. He will leverage data and insights to spot opportunities to boost workflow, teamwork and strategic outcomes. He will also set benchmarks and identify challenges early to brainstorm solutions with internal experts. Communication is also paramount. Roldán will be responsible for ensuring the company’s 380+ strong team working across more than 20 countries understand its direction, challenges and opportunities, helping them move forward together and talk with a united voice.

Excitation Engineering Services appoints Qatar-based agent to develop business in the local synchronous system control market

Power control specialist Excitation Engineering Services (EES) has appointed Qatar-based Synergy Gulf to develop business in the region. EES’ offering includes supplying front-end upgrades of existing excitation systems, designing and building complete new systems, system maintenance and servicing, failure investigation and engineer training.

As most excitation systems in Qatar are decades old and, in many cases, no longer supported by the original suppliers, EES aims to help engineers and engineering managers overcome challenges with obsolescence management. Synergy Gulf was selected as it met EES’ key criteria of having an in-house team of engineers, existing relationships with Qatar’s major industrial companies and a commitment to ongoing technical support.

EES’ offering in the synchronous machine control system market is unique as it is an independent company that can provide components from all major OEMs without being tied to one brand. Furthermore, it has a warehouse of new and refurbished legacy and obsolete parts that cannot be sourced from the wider marketplace. This enables it to provide cost-effective system upgrades that cause minimal plant disruption.

“Qatar is one of the big three markets in the GCC and has a high level of industrialisation that relies on decades-old excitation systems, which are difficult to source spare parts or support for,” explained Colin Cox, business development manager at EES. “With our in-house technical expertise and comprehensive stock of excitation system parts, we are well placed to provide cost-effective upgrades and offer long-term technical support, servicing and maintenance beyond the initial equipment supply.

Laytons ETL’s John Gavan hands compliance baton to disputes partner Ben Thorogood

The City of London-based international law firm Laytons ETL has appointed partner Ben Thorogood as its new Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP). Mr Thorogood takes over from partner John Gavan, who held the role from its inception 11 years ago.

As COLP, Mr Thorogood will be responsible for ensuring Laytons ETL’s compliance with the terms of its authorisation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), and for ensuring that the firm, its managers, employees and interest holders comply with any SRA regulations which apply to them.

Ben Thorogood joined Silverman Sherliker, which merged with Laytons in 2017, as a paralegal in 2012. He trained with the firm, qualifying in 2015, and was appointed a partner at Laytons ETL in 2022.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Thorogood said, “I am grateful for the immense contribution made by John Gavan during his tenure as COLP.

“I am committed to providing the firm, and those engaged within it, with the support required to uphold the highest professional and ethical standards, and to maintain an effective and dynamic legal practice.”

The firm’s previous Compliance Office for Legal Practice, John Gavan, is stepping back to focus on his practice which spans the firm’s corporate, employment and tax groups. A former main board director of a FTSE 350 company, and previous chairman and managing partner of Laytons, Mr Gavan has advised both employers and employees on share incentive schemes for over 30 years, and specialises in matters where corporate law, corporate governance, employment law, and tax interact.

His tenure as COLP spanned the pandemic, and the associated challenges of adapting compliance procedures to new remote working practices, and, in 2021, the firm’s integration into the international professional services group, ETL Global.

Mr Gavan said, “It has been an honour to serve as Laytons’ first Compliance Officer for Legal Compliance, and to play my part in maintaining, through one of the most turbulent periods in post-war history, the exemplary professional standards for which our firm is known.

Cohesity Appoints Dr. Craig Martell as Chief Technology Officer

Cohesity, a leader in AI-powered data security and management, today announced the appointment of Dr. Craig Martell as Chief Technology Officer. In this role, Dr. Martell will bring his deep industry expertise to shape the company’s technical vision, incorporating current and evolving industry and customer trends to define and execute a strategic and impactful roadmap for the company’s future.

Dr. Martell brings extensive industry and public sector experience and unprecedented expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, leading AI programs for top tech companies since 2013. Dr. Martell most recently served as the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO) for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). In this role, he served as the senior official responsible for accelerating the adoption of data, analytics, digital solutions, and AI functions to generate decision advantage across the department – expertly guiding the DoD through a quickly-changing AI industry. With Dr. Martell as its first leader, the CDAO office was created to elevate digital and AI strategy development and policy formulation while ensuring the unity of mission and tighter integration for the department’s enterprise-wide data, AI, and cyber organisations.

Prior to joining the DoD, Dr. Martell held several senior roles at some of the most recognisable technology companies. At Lyft, he served as Head of Machine Learning, where he designed and built a state-of-the-art Machine Learning (ML) Platform, allowing the Lyft engineering team to quickly create and ship ML models using large-scale, new, and ongoing statistical programs. From 2018 to 2020, Dr. Martell was Head of Machine Intelligence at Dropbox, responsible for all machine learning, including overall vision-setting, drawing from analytics as applied to ML, and clear, concise communication of ML strategy across the organisation. Before then, he led a number of AI teams and market-moving initiatives at LinkedIn. Dr. Martell was also a tenured computer science professor at the Naval Postgraduate School specialising in natural language processing. Dr. Martell’s proficiency in statistical principles and methodologies has been demonstrated in his several patents, including a Hybrid Classification System in 2021 and System and Method for Encrypting Data in Pictorial Data in 2008.

Change at the Helm: Swansea Building Society Welcomes New Chair

Swansea Building Society has signalled a significant transition in its leadership, as Ieuan Griffiths steps down after six years as Chair and nine years on the Board. Stephen Maddock will take over as the new Chair, bringing fresh perspectives to the role.

During his tenure, Griffiths has been instrumental in helping guide the Society through a period of sustained growth and development, leaving an indelible mark on its operations and strategic direction. His steadfast commitment and dedication to the Society’s mission have been deeply appreciated by colleagues, stakeholders, and the broader community alike.

Stepping into the role of Chair is Stephen Maddock, who brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise in finance and governance. Stephen joined the Society’s Board in May 2016 and has served with distinction ever since. His appointment as Chair, effective May 2024, underscores the Society’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of leadership and governance.

A Chartered Accountant and a Fellow of ICAEW, Maddock’s professional journey is marked by a distinguished career in the financial sector. Beginning his career at the Swansea office of accountancy firm Deloitte Haskins & Sells, Maddock went on to join Coopers & Lybrand, now PwC, after qualifying. His career culminated in the role of Director of Financial Shared Services for Tata Steel Europe before embarking on early retirement.

In assuming the role of Chair, Maddock brings to bear a profound understanding of financial management, strategic planning, and corporate governance. His strategic vision, coupled with his deep-rooted commitment to the Society’s values, positions him as an ideal steward for the organisation as it continues its mission of serving its members and community.
