Daring to Dream Charity Gives Critical Care Hospital Rooms a New Lease of Life

Daring to Dream is a young and ambitious charity whose mission is to support the emotional health and wellbeing of adult patients in Wales. One of the ways in which they do this is transforming patient day rooms, relatives’ rooms and quiet rooms in hospital.

They have completed another two such rooms in the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in the last month: the relatives’ room and quiet room in critical care.

Before and After

Rooms such as these are normally very dismal and bleak, both in décor and furnishings, yet they are important spaces to support emotional wellbeing. Spaces for relatives for rest, have respite from their bedside vigil, and for difficult conversations between families and clinicians.

Daring to Dream has taken these rooms and transformed them into interior-designed, comfortably refurnished, non-clinical spaces that provide patients, families and staff a safe space to escape to.

Angela Hughes, Assistant Director of Patient Experience, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, said: “The redecorated relatives and quiet rooms offer a haven for people at some of the most difficult and distressing times in their lives. They create an environment that does not feel like it is in a hospital and can offer a much needed sanctuary for families and friends.”

Dr Julie Highfield, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Lead Psychologist for the ICU and MTC Psychology Team, University Hospital of Wales, said: “A quiet space to retreat for our families and our staff is so important. The nature of that space is key to their experience and can make a positive difference when they need it.

“We are so grateful to Daring to Dream for their support with the much needed redecoration of these important spaces on our critical care ward.”

Daring to Dream is supporting the wellbeing of the chronically ill who are home-based with their very first virtual festival. Lleswyl: The Daring to Dream Festival will take place online on the evening of Friday, November 26. Sign up for your free tickets here https://daringtodream.wales/tickets/  to host your own festival experience.

Yorkshire business celebrates fourth birthday with £10,000 donation to charity

Social Cactus, a mindset coaching business, was established four years ago by Leeds-born Amy Crumpton while she was backpacking through South America. They celebrated their fourth birthday (22 October 2021) with a full-day Instagram Live event, a £10,000 donation to charity, and Founder Amy will be returning to London from Spain to host an in-person event, ‘Magnetic Live Event’.

Amy, a certified Time Line Therapy and NLP Practitioner, said: “It’s hard to believe that we are four years down the road and Social Cactus continues to thrive and get bigger and more successful.

“We have had remarkable financial success this year and so are lucky enough to be able to mark our birthday by donating £10,000 to Rescued Paws, a charity set up by a fellow Leeds-woman. Total donations to Rescued Paws have hit £15,000, and we hope to be able to donate further through The Cactus Foundation.”

In the four years since inception, Social Cactus has helped over 2000 women  and has grown to a team of nine following the appointment of Laura Greaux, a Social Cactus client who has now completed her coaching certificate and will join the business as a coach.

Amy added: “We have so much to celebrate this month, but most notably for me is being able to help so many women to reach their potential. I love working with such focussed and powerful women on a daily basis and I hope that in the next four years we can reach even more amazing business women.”

Their fourth anniversary was celebrated on 22 October on Instagram, with a full day ‘Birthday Bonanza’, featuring stories from former clients, coaches and others who have worked with Social Cactus along the way.  Social Cactus will also be sharing details of the challenges they’ve faced along the journey of growing the business.

Amy, along with Social Cactus Head Coach and fiancé Chris, are gearing up for a brief return to the UK from Spain to host an in-person event, ‘Magnetic Live Event’. Aimed at coaches and service-based business women, the event will focus on mindset, strategy and action. 10% of all ticket sales will be donated to The Cactus Foundation, and will be matched funded by Social Cactus.

Eco-Retailer Donate to Save Over 1,500 Acres of Rainforest

Eco-retailer, Ecovibe, has announced it has saved 1,563 acres of threatened tropical rainforest and habitats through its partnership with the Rainforest Trust.

The retailer introduced the partnership back in November 2020 and has since donated a percentage of every £1 spent on site to the environmental charity, which in turn saves six square metres of rainforest each time.

As a result of deforestation, farming and climate change, in 2021 only one third of tropical rainforests remains intact , according to the Rainforest Foundation Norway.

Whilst many national policies pledge to mitigate the problem of deforestation, rates have only but increased since 2018 , particularly in countries such as Brazil, home to the Amazon Rainforest.

Stacey Skidmore, managing director of Ecovibe, commented, ‘We chose to partner with the Rainforest Trust as they get to the heart of the issue. Their work protects endangered wildlife and threatened tropical forests, working directly with conservationists and local communities to see real results.’

The Rainforest Trust state that the donations from Ecovibe have enabled them to place threatened rainforests and tropical habitats under permanent protection. These forests provide safe havens for endangered wildlife and increased security for indigenous communities, whilst helping to fight the impact of climate change.

‘Deforestation rates are not slowing down and so we plan to continue this partnership for the foreseeable future.’, adds Skidmore.

The eco retailer is already seeking additional future partnerships with environmental charities, specifically those with a focus on cleaning oceans and combatting plastic pollution.

Skidmore adds ‘Having a positive impact on our planet is at the heart of our brand and our collections help people make positive changes to their everyday lives.’

The past five years has seen many businesses beginning to incorporate eco goals into their strategies in response to the climates’ deterioration and consumer behaviours.

It is thought these goals will become a central focus for brands moving forward.

Morgan Sindall Construction raise £4,000 for children’s charity in i360 abseil

Morgan Sindall Construction has donated £3,835 to children’s charity Rockinghorse as a result of a charity abseil from the i360 tower in Brighton.

A team from the company’s Southern Home Counties office completed the 450ft drop abseil as part of ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity which has raised approximately £100,000 for the local charity over the past decade.

The charity, which was set up in 1967, is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton but also supports paediatric wards in hospitals across Sussex, specialist neonatal units, respite centres and children’s services, with the overarching aim of improving the lives of sick children across the region.

The money raised by the team will go towards providing much-needed innovative and life-saving medical equipment and additional services to better support children and young people, their families and those who care for them.

The team, led by Area Director Guy Hannell, took on the challenge at the landmark British Airways i360 tower, known for its spectacular 162 metre viewing platform.

The iDrop event took place on the 15th July and in total raised £13,120 from all the participants involved. This funding will go towards a number of projects including riding therapy at Chailey Heritage School, Tonie reader books and a new sensory garden at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital.

Guy Hannell, Area Director at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “It is always great to be able to give back to the organisations and charities that support the communities at the heart of our projects. The work Rockinghorse does for the children of Sussex is absolutely invaluable and it’s a cause that’s very close to the hearts of everyone that lives and works in the area.

“Going over the edge of the i360 tower was an exhilarating experience and I’m incredibly proud of the team for both taking on this challenge as well as for all the other activities over the past decade that has helped raise £100,000 for Rockinghorse.”

Janella Merritt, Head of Fundraising at Rockinghorse said: “The iDrop is a wonderful event that gives our fundraisers the once in a lifetime opportunity to jump from the iconic Brighton seafront landmark. But obviously the main reason we hold events like this is to raise money and we are so thankful to all the participants from Morgan Sindall Construction for helping raise such a great amount for Rockinghorse. These funds will help hundreds of sick babies and children who need support in hospital or the local community.”

Morgan Sindall Construction is currently delivering a number of key projects across the region, including the £10 million Hailsham Community College, a £11 million affordable housing development on Victoria Road, Portslade, and the £16.1 million Summerdown School in Eastbourne for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Landau helps people back to work with Hereford job fair

An event in Hereford this month will bring together local, regional and national companies to help people find jobs and reduce unemployment across the county.

The Hereford Job Fair – organised by award-winning supported employment and training charity Landau – will showcase more than 500 job vacancies across multiple sectors including retail, construction and hospitality.

The free event on October 21st will be held at the Kindle Centre and will be an opportunity for individuals out of work or looking for their next challenge to speak to employers face-to-face about potential opportunities on offer.

Sonia Roberts, Chief Executive of Landau, said this event could play a huge role in helping to reduce unemployment levels across the county by supporting people who are currently out of work or looking for a career change.

“This is a great opportunity for employers to speak to local individuals about their skills, talents and aspirations for work whilst at the same time giving people the chance to explore the wide variety of jobs currently available,” she said.

“With the furlough scheme coming to an end we are aware that many people may be looking for work and we would encourage anyone who is currently unemployed to come along and take advantage of meeting employers and finding out about the jobs they have on offer.

“We have local, regional and national businesses attending so the opportunities will be wide ranging. Our team of specialist employment advisers will also be available on the day for anyone needing support to help them access employment.

“They work on a day-to-day basis with individuals who have found it difficult to get jobs for many reasons including disability, illness, mental ill health or learning barriers and can help individuals with a tailored support plan to get them into work or training.”

The event will take place between 10am and 2pm and people are invited to drop in throughout the day.

For a full list of companies and organisations attending the event visit https://www.landau.co.uk/hereford-jobs-fair-2021/

Each year Landau supports in the region of 3,000 individuals back into the workplace or into training schemes through its specialist support.

Earlier this year, the charity was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Promoting Opportunities to those facing social mobility barriers and in 2020 it became a Centre of Excellence for its Individual Placement Support Services as well as becoming the highest scoring RAND reviewed service in the UK.

Fundraising Appeal in Memory of Dad-of-five who died in holiday park tragedy

A CELEBRATION in memory of a ‘larger than life’ dad of five who suddenly passed away at age 35 is being held at a North Wales holiday park – and they need your help.

Jeff Dunning, from Ellesmere Port, was on holiday with his wife and ‘childhood sweetheart’ Vicki at Lyons Robin Hood in Rhyl when he died suddenly, surrounded by his five children, in August this year.

Jeff Dunning

The family have described this catastrophic event as ‘shocking’ and ‘heart-breaking’, especially as the late Jeff lost his mother only two weeks prior to this incident on August 20th following a battle with cancer.

The family were in the caravan when Jeff felt a sudden chest pain and had to lie down. Vicki attempted CPR before ambulance crews and an air ambulance arrived at the scene, however Jeff sadly died 45 minutes later.

Joyce and Richard Cross

Daniel, Jeff’s cousin, said: “Jeff was an only child raised by [mum] Joyce, and we were preparing for her funeral when Jeff passed away out of nowhere. He was with Vicki and their children at his mum’s new caravan in Robin Hood, which she never had the chance to go to.

“He was talking to Vicki while they were sat in the caravan, and the next minute he made a funny noise. He said he was hurting, and then he had to go to the floor. Vicki tried to resuscitate him before the ambulance came. They were there with a helicopter within half an hour; the ambulance were fantastic and tried themselves, but unfortunately they were not able to.

“A nice way of putting it is that he has joined his mum in the sky.

“Ever since we were kids, we have always holidayed North Wales, on camping trips, and a number of family members own caravans there. Jeff and the family went to have some time as a family, so it is nice that they had that week together.”

The team and owners at Lyons Robin Hood are now rallying up to raise as much funds as possible for Vicki and the kids just before Christmas hits, an occasion that Richard, Joyce’s wife and Jeff’s father, said will be ‘strange’ and ‘quiet’ this year.

An evening of celebration will be held on October 29th, which will include live entertainment, ‘Hood’ Bingo, guest acts, and a raffle/auction, allowing owners on-park to raise a glass to these two beloved members of the community.

Beth Hughes, marketing and PR executive for the group, said: “We all remember the day the air ambulance landed outside the park, and we were all extremely shocked and saddened to hear of Jeff’s passing. It was one of those moments you’ll never forget, and it’s safe to say our hearts broke for Richard who is a longstanding owner at Lyons Robin Hood. Many of us went home and hugged our loved ones – it’s things like this that put everything in perspective.

“We can’t even put into words how big the hole in the Cross family’s live must be. We can’t comprehend how Jeff’s wife, now a single mother of five must be feeling. We can’t begin to try to understand how Joyce’s husband, who is an owner at Lyons Robin Hood, must be feeling too.

“But what we can do is show our support to these amazing people, and help them celebrate the lives of Jeff and Joyce who were taken too soon from this world. To do this, we’re organising a charity fundraiser for owners on Robin Hood, with some live music, some games, and a raffle.

“And here’s where we need the help of our local community – if anyone could donate anything to this special cause as raffle prizes – whether that’s a bottle of wine, some chocolates, candles, signed football shirts, tickets or vouchers of any kind or anything at all – that would be absolutely wonderful. We would be happy to promote your business to our owners on the night, and let them know that your business has supported this local family who I’m sure don’t know what tomorrow will bring.

“A small gesture from you will go a long way in helping us raise funds for Jeff’s 5 children, and Joyce’s grandchildren, to somewhat enjoy their first Christmas without their father and grandmother.”

Those wishing to donate raffle or auction prizes can do so by contacting marketing@lyonsholidayparks.co.uk or calling 07715638016. Pick up from the local area can be arranged, and postal options are also available.

Golfers club together to raise record funds for DofE Wales

Golfers from across South Wales came together at Langland Golf Club to compete and raise funds for Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) Wales at its annual charity golf day, in partnership with ACCA Cymru and sponsored by Swansea Building Society.

The event saw 15 teams compete in this year’s annual fundraiser, held on September 27, 2021. The total amount raised, via entries and sponsorship, was £4,000 – a new record for the event.

This year also saw the event’s first-ever hole in one. Geoff Thomas of team RMS – Retail Merchandising Services/Flex Systems managed to get to the pin with one shot on Langland’s iconic 16th hole – famously known as the club’s ‘death or glory’ hole.

The competing teams were joined by DofE gold alumni and Wales and British and Irish Lions captain, Alun Wyn Jones, who presented the event’s main sponsor, Swansea Building Society, with a Bronze associate supporter certificate in recognition of its continued sponsorship of DofE Wales.

DofE Wales is the Welsh Office of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, a charity founded by the late Prince Philip in 1956. The awards are open to 14 – 24-year-olds, with three progressive levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Each award has a number of sections to complete, involving helping the community and/or environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition and, for gold only, working with a team on a residential activity.

Any young person can do their DofE award, regardless of ability, gender, background or location. The aim of the award is to gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive.

DofE awards are also seen as enhancing young people’s CVs, with many employers and universities recognising the award in their recruitment process.

Ian Gwilym, DofE Wales senior relationship manager, said:

“It was fantastic for DofE Wales to run our first live event for some time in the wonderful setting of Langland Bay Golf Club. Due to the support of our new bronze associate, Swansea Building Society, we were able to raise significant funds for the charity and help make more young people be the best they can be!”

Alun Williams, chief executive officer, Swansea Building Society, said:

“We are delighted to have sponsored this year’s DofE Wales charity golf day at the beautiful Langland Golf Club. The event raised a considerable sum for the charity, and we were very proud to have been presented with a bronze associate supporter certificate from rugby legend, Alun Wyn Jones.

“DofE Wales is a fantastic organisation giving great opportunities and experiences to young people from all backgrounds across Wales. The life skills these young people learn during the DofE programme are invaluable and will stand them in very good stead throughout their adult life.”

Fabulosa announces new charity partnerships

Fabulosa, the fragrance led lifestyle and cleaning brand, has announced new charity partnerships with The Cybersmile Foundation and The Hygiene Bank. These partnerships, along with Bliss Charity, round off the brands’ mission to help make the world a little more ‘fabulosa’.

Fabulosa found its popularity online, and was keen to partner with the The Cybersmile Foundation, a multi-award-winning nonprofit organisation committed to digital wellbeing and tackling all forms of abuse and bullying online.

The Cybersmile Foundation works to promote kindness, diversity and inclusion by building a safer, more positive digital community and encouraging people to realise their full potential without the fear of ridicule and abuse. They are also committed to helping to change negative online behaviors through education – preparing this and further generations for a safe and positive digital future.

Scott Freeman, CEO of Cybersmile is delighted to have Fabulosa on board as a corporate partner. He said, “We are excited to be partnering with Fabulosa and will be working with the brand to help facilitate a more diverse and inclusive internet. Unfortunately, problems such as cyberbullying, harassment and digital abuse are holding many back from enjoying the benefits that access to the internet can provide, and we know our newly formed partnership will help raise awareness and make a difference. It was clear when I spoke to Fabulosa how passionate they are at tackling the issue of online bullying and abuse, and we know this will be a meaningful partnership for years to come.”

For Fabulosa, The Hygiene Bank, whose mission is to bring communities, businesses and thought leaders together to tackle hygiene poverty, also felt like a natural partnership. The Hygiene Bank is a grassroots, people-powered charity and social movement, grounded in community. Their passion stems from the injustice that people may be unable to fully participate in society due to hygiene poverty and the charity works around the clock to help inspire social change.

Amy Harris, Schools and Brand Relationships Manager for The Hygiene Bank said, “We couldn’t be happier to have Fabulosa as one of our brand partners. Hygiene poverty is not being able to afford many of the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products most of us take for granted and there is a lot of work to be done to build awareness of this issue. The statistics are really staggering, and it is companies like Fabulosa that are jumping in and doing their part to help address this stark reality for many in the UK.”

Adam Burnett, Group Marketing Director at Fabulosa commented: “We are a family brand and are the favourite disinfectant with families with young children. Both of these charity partnerships are massively important to us. We have seen a lot of the positive sides to social media and often feel the love within our online community, but we have also seen some of the negative sides to it, and working with Cybersmile is only going to help fight online abuse and cyber bullying.”

Adam continued, “When we found out that there are over 14 million people living in poverty in the UK, we knew we wanted to help and do our part to contribute to the solution. We are committed to significant quarterly financial donations to each charity, as well as launching regular, feel good Fabulosa products to help raise awareness of these very important organisations and the good work they do every day.”

Earlier this year, Fabulosa launched its partnership with Bliss whose vision is that every baby born premature or sick in the UK has the best chance of survival and quality of life. The company has already donated £12,000 to the charity and launched a special Bliss inspired disinfectant range, which is now being expanded due to its popularity.

ThreatQuotient Continues Tradition of Celebrating World Rhino Day in 2021

ThreatQuotient™, a leading security operations platform innovator, today invites the cybersecurity industry to celebrate World Rhino Day 2021. Less than 30,000 rhinos remain in the world, and the poaching crisis is not slowing down. To help bring awareness to rhino conservation efforts and to raise money for initiatives that will ensure their protection, ThreatQuotient has been an official partner of Helping Rhinos, a charity organisation focused on providing a sustainable future for rhinos, since 2019.

ThreatQuotient’s ongoing support for Helping Rhinos includes sponsoring Nocry, a member of South Africa’s first all-female anti-poaching unit, Black Mambas. The Black Mambas took part in the first ever World Female Ranger Day in June 2021, highlighting the unique skills that female rangers bring to conservation and the incredible progress they are making. These rangers are not only protecting wildlife on the frontline, but are great role models in the community. ThreatQuotient’s sponsorship has contributed to vehicle, administrative, patrol and equipment costs, as well as the new Black Mambas operations center, providing a headquarters complete with computers, radios, grid maps and nature conservation books.

“Every year on World Rhino Day, I am proud that ThreatQuotient is part of something bigger than cybersecurity. Our love for the rhino species can be felt in every corner of ThreatQuotient, from our mascot and office space, to the rhino adoptions we have made on behalf of every region of the world where we have customers,” said John Czupak, CEO of ThreatQuotient. “We recognise there are many causes that deserve worldwide attention. Today, we call on our industry peers to join us in raising awareness of rhino conservation. We tip our hat to Helping Rhinos for their tireless work, and I thank my team for building a culture at ThreatQuotient that actively looks for ways to make an impact on the world around us.”

Loss of habitat is an increasing threat to the rhinos’ future on our planet. South Africa is home to 80% of Africa’s rhino population, and the region’s human population growth is forecast to rise by 20 million by 2075, putting unprecedented pressure on wild spaces and the wildlife that rely on them to survive. To support rhinos that are displaced, ThreatQuotient also maintains four rhino adoptions – Mthetho, Makhosi, Mpilo and Bhanoyi – each of which are growing and thriving at the Zululand Rhino Orphanage.

Simon Jones, CEO of Helping Rhinos, added, “Helping Rhinos applauds the collaborative international efforts with the law enforcement agencies in South Africa, however, we still have a long road ahead to overcome the poaching crisis. In the first half of 2021, poaching was 50% higher than in the same period in 2020. With the support of dedicated organisations like ThreatQuotient, we can continue to find creative and innovative ways to protect the world’s rhino population. Helping Rhinos is grateful for their efforts, and look forward to welcoming other supporters into our community as a result.”

Help Rhinos’ latest initiative is the Rhino Strongholds Protect project, aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of anti-poaching operations. Radio tracking collaring is a proven deterrent against poaching, and by fitting 40 radio tracking collars on 40 rhinos, Helping Rhinos will be able to track rhinos across eight different reserves in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. These collars will help rangers watch the rhinos from a far distance and save time and resources.

To get involved and contribute to Helping Rhinos’ goals, consider attending the Global Gala for Rhinos on Oct. 23, 2021. The gala, as a hybrid virtual event, will showcase work being done to create and strengthen Rhino Strongholds that are essential to ensure the long term survival of both black and white rhino on Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

More information about Helping Rhinos and an online donation link can be found here.

About Helping Rhinos

Helping Rhinos prides itself in applying an innovative and forward-thinking approach to conservation and is delivering a positive change in the fortunes of the rhino. They will continue to work with passionate and dedicated partners, both internationally and on the ground in the heart of rhino habitats. Homeless Oxfordshire builds portfolio of accommodation for the homeless thanks to social investment from SASC

Homelessness Oxfordshire, the largest provider of supported accommodation for homeless people in Oxfordshire, has received a social investment loan from Social and Sustainable Capital (SASC), from its Social and Sustainable Housing fund (SASH) to increase and improve the quality of accommodation it provides for rough sleepers in Banbury and Oxford.

The charity plays a central role in tackling homelessness in Oxford and the surrounding areas and supports 220 single homeless people in Oxfordshire in 11 different housing projects.

As well as housing provision, the charity delivers high quality support services including meals, training, and education to help vulnerable individuals get back on their feet, rebuild their lives and move on from homelessness.

Homelessness Oxfordshire approached SASC for a loan to provide accommodation for rough sleepers and enable it to purchase one bed flats, as well as larger four and five bed houses in Oxford and Banbury, which would transform its portfolio from being a rental model to homeownership.

Purchasing the homes will give the charity far greater control and autonomy over their properties and enable it to provide longer term and more safe and stable homes, which Oxford City Council has identified are needed. Owning the properties will also provide the charity with greater financial sustainability in the future.

Jo Faulkner-Harvey, Head of Fundraising and Communications said, “Oxford is a very expensive and problematic area for the homeless. The loan from SASC will be transformative. We will be able to purchase properties in Oxford and Banbury some of which we currently rent and move away from our reliance on private landlords. This means we can improve the quality of our accommodation, buy in better locations and ensure there is support to help people get back on their feet.”

“We will support a broader range of clients including those who need hostel accommodation, individuals who need quality move on accommodation and those with complex mental health needs who require longer two-year tenancies and support.”

Ben Rick, CEO, SASC said, “Homelessness Oxfordshire is a specialist in providing safe home and high-quality support and initiatives for vulnerable individuals. With the loan, they will be able to reconfigure their housing portfolio and purchase homes rather than rent them, giving them complete control and better housing options to support a wider range of people and help them move away from homelessness to achieve an independent life.”

This is SASC’s 10th investment from the SASH fund. SASH was co-designed with borrower charities whose work with vulnerable people was being hampered through lack of access to safe, stable, and appropriate homes.
