NEBOSH begins search for ‘transformational’ Chief Executive

NEBOSH begins search for ‘transformational’ Chief Executive

NEBOSH, one of the world’s leading health, safety and environmental organisations, has begun recruitment for a new Chief Executive.

Over the past 40 years nearly half a million people in over 130 countries have studied for a NEBOSH qualification. It is now searching for a transformational and commercially astute Chief Executive who can continue its legacy in providing recognised, rigorous and respected qualifications that help to save the lives of people in workplaces around the world.

The charity, which employs over 110 people from its base in Leicester, embarked on a new strategy in 2019. Coupled with the challenges and opportunities presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the new Chief Executive will drive a period of significant transformation that has already begun with the introduction of new technology for the delivery of its examinations.

Bill Nixon, NEBOSH Chair, says: “NEBOSH plays a key role in improving health, safety, wellbeing and the environment in workplaces worldwide. It is a cause very close to the hearts of our employees and our global network of learners, Learning Partners and employers so to join NEBOSH as our new leader will be to join a very passionate and worthwhile community.

“This global community expects the very best from NEBOSH so our Board of Trustees is searching for a very special Chief Executive; someone who has exceptional people skills and commercial acumen but also a drive to make the world a safer and healthier place for workers around the world. It’s a challenging prospect but we’re in the business of saving lives and that is incredibly rewarding indeed.”

Recruitment is being undertaken by Peridot Partners. Please visit https://www.peridotpartners.co.uk/jobs/nebosh-chief-executive/ for further details and to apply.

Jobs in London up 14% for June

Professional vacancies in the capital increased 14% month-on-month in June, indicating that London’s businesses are slowly starting to re-hire as lockdown measures continue to ease. That’s according to new research from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo), the trade association for the recruitment sector.

The data, provided by business intelligence specialist Vacancysoft, also showed that by the end of June the number of professional vacancies being created per day was up 54% when compared to April. While this indicates a positive move for hiring as more companies re-open offices, the number of new jobs being added each day currently sits at just half the numbers that would normally be reported in London, suggesting there is still a long way to go before the capital recovers.

Amazon bolsters the capitals hiring

Looking at top hirers in London, Amazon continues to dominate recruitment, with almost three times more vacancies added by the firm throughout June than the second most active employer, Citigroup Inc. This is perhaps unsurprising given the demand for online shopping that has grown over the course of lockdown. GSK was also listed as one of the top ten firms recruiting, making the list for the first time in three years, as the firm continues to drive research for a Covid-19 vaccine.

Accountancy and HR professionals in demand

The data also showed a 28% increase in accountancy vacancies month-on-month between May and June, indicative of more companies streamlining costs and tapping into support funds as the pandemic continues to impact profits in the capital. HR vacancies in London also noted an uptick, increasing 12% month-on-month as more employers faced juggling a variety of employment contracts, with the furlough scheme extension seemingly leading to an uptick demand for Human Resources staff.

Ann Swain, CEO of APSCo comments:

“June signalled significant change for the capital’s businesses. With lockdown measures gradually being eased, it’s encouraging to see hiring creep up. We are, of course, still a long way off normality, but we’re certainly heading in the right direction, with online retailers bolstering the capital’s recruitment. We don’t expect to see hiring for companies like Amazon and GSK to decline for the foreseeable future, but as more organisations continue to open their doors again, we are predicting a continuation of this upward trend in recruitment.”

“With the furlough scheme extension being used by some while other businesses are seeing staff return to work both full and part-time, it’s perhaps unsurprising to note an uptick in demand for human resources professionals to manage the array of employment contracts the many businesses currently have in place. However, this increased need for accountancy professionals suggests that despite the efforts being made to get London back up and running again, financial aid remains a top concern for company owners.”

WMCA helps 22 unemployed people in Chelmsley Wood to get new jobs with Amey

Twenty-two people from Chelmsley Wood have all landed jobs with support service company Amey, thanks to a community scheme funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to give jobseekers new skills.

This is part of the WMCA’s wider aims of supporting local people to gain qualifications or retrain, helping them to succeed as productive members of society.

Following training funded through the WMCA’s Connecting Communities programme, the residents are either helping to carry out household bin collections in Solihull, or maintaining green public spaces, such as parks, roundabouts and verges, across the borough.

Connecting Communities gives local jobseekers tailored job advice and specialist support in the heart of their own community. In Chelmsley Wood, it is being delivered by the Colebridge Trust, a not-for-profit community and enterprise development organisation, at the Junction in Chapelhouse Road.

With funding from the WMCA, the Colebridge Trust identified 60 candidates for the jobs at Amey, arranged information sessions and interviews for them at the Junction with the company, and trained the residents to prepare them for the interviews.

Cllr Ian Courts, leader of Solihull Council, said: “Although these are very difficult times, there are still job opportunities out there. One of our key priorities in rebuilding the economy after Covid-19 is to make sure those people who are unemployed get back into work.

“It’s great news that 22 local people have been able to get new jobs with Amey through the Connecting Communities programme. I wish them every success for the future.”

James Clinton, aged 33, who lives in Solihull, was unemployed for more than two years before landing a job as a ground worker with Amey.

“I’m loving my new job and I feel that Connecting Communities really helped me to build my confidence and believe in my abilities,” he said.

Serena Sale, employment and skills manager at the Colebridge Trust, said: “We are very proud of our learners. It’s been great to see them grow in confidence through the interview process.
“We are continuing to support those who were unsuccessful by coaching them to apply for other work and helping them with employability skills.”

Wayne Rowley, Amey operations manager for transport infrastructure in Solihull, said: “Thanks to funding from the WMCA, we have been working with the Colebridge Trust to recruit local unemployed people for three years now. The quality of the candidates is always very high and gets better every year. We look forward to working with the Trust again when we have more vacancies to fill.”

Cllr George Duggins, WMCA portfolio holder for productivity and skills and leader of Coventry City Council, said: “It’s crucial that our economic recovery from Covid-19 is inclusive and works for everyone. This is a great example of the WMCA helping local unemployed people back into work during this challenging time.”
Connecting Communities is funded by the WMCA using a grant from the Department for Work and Pensions, as part of the wider transfer of powers and funding from Whitehall to the West Midlands.

This devolution of powers has helped to facilitate new ways of working with skills and training providers to better support the needs of learners and employers across the region. The autonomy and experience has helped the West Midlands ensure it has the skills base it needs to succeed, increase overall employment and productivity, drive growth in key sectors, and achieve its wider economic and social priorities for the region.

There are nine programmes in communities across the West Midlands where unemployment is high and pay levels are low. Over the past year, more than 500 people have gained new jobs thanks to support from Connecting Communities.

The location-based support is aimed at making it easier to engage with local residents and encouraging the communities themselves to use their existing social networks to spread the word about the help available.

Survey results will shape North Wales public sector response to damage caused by Coronavirus pandemic

THE results of a far-reaching survey launched this week will be the catalyst for plans to spearhead a business resurgence in North Wales.

Delivered by the North Wales Economic Ambition Board’s Programme Office – on behalf of the six local authorities – the study focuses on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and how it has affected regional businesses and their industries, with a view to understanding what needs to be done to spark and support a revival when lockdown restrictions are lifted.

The data will help to inform the councils, and the region, of the emerging situation and guide planning already underway to kick-start and renew the economy in the short and medium term.

It will also feed into the long-term Growth Vision and long-term strategy to improve infrastructure, create jobs, and generate investment when companies need it most.

The North Wales Growth Deal is a key part of that Vision, and Programme Director Alwen Williams is encouraging people in all sectors to take the survey and make a difference for those businesses affected by Coronavirus, and future generations.

Representatives working on behalf of the local authorities will also be picking up the phone to owners and managers to capture their responses and use them to shape proposals and priorities.

“The evidence gathered will be pivotal in helping us to fully understand the most pressing issues facing all sectors in North Wales, and the best ways to move forward,” said Alwen.

“Then we will know where we are, what the priority areas are, what needs to be done, and how we can help these companies to navigate their way through this.

“There are many challenges and the first we need to overcome is finding out exactly what we are up against, which areas are in the most urgent need of support – hospitality and tourism, for example – and what can realistically be achieved in the short term to generate renewed optimism.”

The Programme Office will be looking to discover the effect across different counties and sectors, the size of businesses and with what force they were hit by the Covid-19 crisis.

There will also be examples of best practice and positive outcomes as some firms were able to adapt to the situation and use their machinery and technology to manufacture PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), hand sanitiser or medical products.

However, the picture has been largely bleak, with firms encountering a wide range of issues, namely loss of revenue and staff, reduced productivity and sales, a disruption to the health and wellbeing of employees and temporary closure.

Alwen added: “This isn’t a box ticking exercise, the information and insight from businesses will form the understanding we have and help to shape the way forward. We would welcome the opportunity to maintain communication with those surveyed so we can see if progress is being made, and if not, how we can build momentum.

“We urge people to please take part, have your say and provide as much information as possible so we have a detailed report on what happens next. Every person who answers the questions will have played their part in helping to get the region back on its feet.”
