Veezu offers free rides to Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s lifesaving crew

Veezu has renewed their partnership with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, offering a vital service to its advanced pre-hospital emergency service.

Formerly known as Go Carz and A2B Radio Cars in the region, Veezu has set up an account for the air ambulance crew, offering a free taxi service for them to get back from hospital when they have travelled by land ambulance or if the aircraft has needed to return due to nighttime and low visibility.

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity operates and funds three air ambulances and a fleet of critical care cars covering six Midlands counties: Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands. It’s vital pre-hospital emergency service responds to some of the most traumatic incidents such as cardiac arrests, heart attacks and strokes.

Each year, it costs between £13-14 million to maintain its clinical operations, where the charity relies solely on the support of local people and organisations to fund future lifesaving missions.

They have recently opened a new base in Shifnal that will allow them to host more members of staff, events, and educational visits. Veezu will be helping to make travel to and from the base more accessible with QR code displays providing an easy booking service.

The account, which was set up last year following a cash donation, has provided a vital service to the crew of critical care paramedics and doctors.

Pam Hodgetts, corporate partnerships manager at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “Veezu has been supporting Midlands Air Ambulance Charity for a number of years, providing valuable financial and pro bono support.

“On occasion, our aircraft need to return to base due to nighttime flying restrictions, leaving our crew stranded at major trauma centres across the Midlands. Veezu provides a free taxi service to ensure the crew can return to base once their patient handover is complete. As you can imagine, this not only provides our crew with peace of mind but also saves the charity a lot of money. We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support.”

Graham Hoof, regional operations director of Veezu in the Midlands, said: “We’re always happy to offer cash donations to charities but in this case, we thought we could offer something that was of tangible benefit to the charity.

“The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity account has proved useful to its crew over the last year, so it was a no brainer to renew the partnership. We’re so happy we’ve been able to help its team of highly skilled clinicians in instances where they have travelled to hospital via land ambulance or are unable to travel by via aircraft due to poor visibility. After a long shift, especially one where you’ve helped save lives, the last thing you need is to worry about how you’re getting home. “

Veezu named official ride partner for Shrewsbury Town FC

Veezu, Shropshire’s biggest private hire operator, is partnering with local football club Shrewsbury Town FC.

Formerly known as Go Carz, Veezu will be official ride partner for the remainder of this season and until the end of the 2024/2045 campaign. Through this partnership, Veezu will provide fans with the best match day experience possible by offering safe and reliable travel to and from the ground.

This partnership is one of many community collaborations that Veezu has made across the Midlands region, including being a keen supporter of local Midlands charity, Grandmentors Wolverhampton, and official ride partner for Solihull Moors FC.

Andrew Tretton, Shrewsbury Town FC’s Commercial Manager, said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Veezu for their support, which is greatly appreciated by everyone at the club. This type of partnership is a first for us, and we’re looking forward to working together with Veezu in the coming months to develop the relationship. ”

Letitia Young, Hyperlocal Marketing Manager at Veezu, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Shrewsbury Town FC and strengthening our connections in the Midlands. As official ride partner, ensuring safety for fans travelling to and from the ground is our top priority.

“It has been great to work with Liam Dooley, Luke Edwards and Andy Tretton to bring this partnership to fruition, and we can’t wait to see what is in store for Veezu and Shrewsbury Town FC in the future.”

West Midlands wins 5G Innovation Regions competition to Level Up region and accelerate growth New Emails for Today

Today the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has won £4m to accelerate the adoption of 5G technology across the two of the region’s most important clusters – manufacturing and smart communities (which includes social care & social housing) – to boost productivity, wellness and jobs.

The funding has been won with through a joint bid from WM5G (West Midlands 5G), JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) and the WMCA’s Local Authority partners into the Government’s 5G Innovation Regions competition which is making £40m available for selected regions to accelerate the transformative benefits that advanced connectivity and digital technologies can provide.

Advanced manufacturing and smart communities are two key clusters identified in the West Midlands Plan for Growth which was launched last year to help re-ignite the regional economy and recapture its pre-Covid success. Accelerating the adoption of so-called Industry 4.0 technologies, including 5G and data/AI, in these clusters has the potential create skilled jobs, boost productivity, transform wellness, and help reduce social inequalities. However, digital adoption still remains low, reflecting underlying skills and cost of living issues combined with awareness, proposition, funding, and delivery barriers.

By becoming a 5G Innovation Region, the West Midlands will overcome these barriers by scaling proven use cases through the UK’s first adoption hubs in operational manufacturing and social housing facilities and then support many other organisations to benefit through adoption programmes.

Minister of Data and Digital Infrastructure Sir John Whittingdale said:  “We’re channeling millions into local areas to unlock the potential of cutting-edge 5G wireless and digital technologies which will reshape our public services, drive economic growth and boost innovation. This new fund will give local areas from across the country the opportunity to be at the forefront of Britain’s world-leading 5G revolution.

“For instance, by using 5G for farming and creating science parks, we’re not just helping local communities, but also encouraging new ideas all over the UK. This is more than just linking smartphones. It’s about using powerful digital connections to transform various sectors in the economy and the public sector throughout the entire country.”

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and WMCA Chair, said: “5G has the power to transform public services and grow our economy – making our workplaces more productive and creating high quality new jobs.

“Accelerating digital adoption is at the heart of our regional strategy to drive prosperity as we continue to bounce back from the impact of the pandemic. We’ve already made a strong start – investing in digital skills bootcamps, launching the West Midlands Innovation Accelerator, and achieving the best 5G coverage of any Combined Authority region.

“But there’s still more we can do to quicken the pace of adoption. That’s why winning £4m in funding and becoming a leading 5G Innovation Region is so important for the West Midlands. Close collaboration with industry leaders and our local authorities will enable us to best serve communities, businesses and public services – opening up new opportunities for local people right across our region in the months and years ahead.”

Steve Prendergast, Digital Operations Director at JLR said: “5G availability in our manufacturing facilities in the Midlands is essential to JLR’s digital transformation as we enhance the performance of our industrial footprint. As we gear up to the production of our next generation electric vehicles and their new platforms, the adoption of advanced wireless technologies will improve the scalability, flexibility and resilience of our manufacturing sites.

Cllr Saima Suleman, Cabinet Member for Digital, Culture, Heritage and Tourism for Birmingham City Council, said: “Birmingham City Council is transforming the way it delivers its services using digital and smart technologies to ensure our residents receive the opportunities and services they deserve. This opportunity will build on the exciting digital transformation activities in our Housing and Adult Social Care services. We look forward to working in partnership through 5GIR to accelerate the benefits from scaled adoption of these technologies for our residents, staff and partners.”

Cllr Duggins, Leader of Coventry City Council, said: “5G-powered technologies have the potential to deliver more efficient public services, new opportunities for residents and businesses, and provide a boost for economic growth. Working together as a region means that we are best placed to collectively make the most of the opportunities this represents.”

City of Wolverhampton Council Leader, Cllr Stephen Simkins, said: “Wolverhampton is a Gigabit and Smart City with futureproofed digital infrastructure including full fibre broadband and 5G utilised to transform delivery of services and develop new applications to unlock its potential. We know how critical digital adoption is for our residents and organisations and we are delighted to be part of this innovative programme that will help bring further benefits to our city and region.”

WM5G sets Birmingham City Council on path to boost digital connectivity in record time

Birmingham City Council has agreed the first Open Access agreements with Telecoms infrastructure providers to use council lampposts to host so-called ‘small cells’. These add greater network coverage and device connection capacity for mobile networks where large masts alone cannot meet user needs.

Typically, such agreements take more than 12 months to put in place but, thanks to support from WM5G, this has been reduced to just six working weeks. The open licensing agreement has been led by the Digital City and Highways teams in the Council and will speed up access to the city assets, resulting in faster deployment of 5G across the city.

Rhys Enfield, director of Infrastructure Acceleration at WM5G, explained: “As we head into the Internet of Things age, the need for fast, reliable internet connections and increased capacity has never been greater.  If we’re to realise the full benefits of the digital age, small cells – which can be hosted on publicly-owned assets such as street lamps, buildings and street furniture – have a key role to play providing secure, reliable mobile networks

“The administrative process involved in identifying suitable locations and getting the right legal agreements and contracts in place typically takes more than 12 months to complete – adding cost and delay to the process. However, thanks to support from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)’s Digital Connectivity Infrastructure Accelerator (DCIA), we have been able to work more closely to reduce this timescale to less than two months.”

The DCIA was created by DCMS to help smooth the roll out of wireless networks, including 5G, across the country and ensure UK PLC is well placed to take advantage of opportunities arising from the digital age.

Peter Bishop, Director for Digital and Customer Services at Birmingham City Council, said: “We’re proud to be among the leading Councils in the country to agree Open Access Agreements that will enable the roll out of crucial telecoms infrastructure across Birmingham much more quickly. As well as improving coverage and bandwidth, it will also improve service continuity, which will be crucial to supporting digital innovations, such as the safe operation of autonomous vehicles, as well as buildings, infrastructure monitoring and remote healthcare. It will also play a key role improving digital inclusion across the city.”

As part of the DCIA programme, WM5G is working with a new platform provided by Sitenna that maps the location of publicly-owned assets capable of housing mobile infrastructure, together with their associated legal agreements and agreed market rates for use across the West Midlands Combined Authority region. The expedited signing of the Open Access Agreements between Birmingham City Council, Freshwave and Ontix has demonstrated how such initiatives will be key to speeding up the role out of upgraded network infrastructure across the country over coming years.

Nick Wiggin, head of partnerships at Freshwave, said: “We’re delighted to have signed this open access agreement with Birmingham City Council and are looking forward to working with both the council and the mobile network operators to enhance connectivity in the community. Having signed open access agreements with dozens of local authorities, we know how they help speed up the rate of digital deployment. This in turn unlocks the many benefits of connectivity, such as encouraging innovation and reducing digital exclusion.”

Richard Williams, director of acquisition at Ontix, said: “Ontix is delighted to have secured the rights to be able to work with Birmingham City Council to help improve the mobile connectivity experience for businesses, residents and visitors across this incredible city.

“Ontix is a leading light in wireless technologies; providing the critical infrastructure that underpins a truly Smart City, helping unlock the real potential of the Internet of Things. This infrastructure rollout, in partnership with Virgin Media O2, will see Ontix making its first significant investment in the city, and will play a major role helping the Council take another step towards achieving its ambitions of becoming a leading international digital city.”

Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) is supplying the small cells used by both Freshwave and Ontix.

Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, added: “Pioneering trials like this are helping to boost connectivity in urban centres, meaning more people than ever before can benefit. Hosting small cells on existing kit means faster rollouts and less disruption – a win-win for consumers and local authorities with ambitious digital agendas.”

Servitization push set to deliver £800,000 sales boost for Alucast

One of the Black Country’s leading aluminium foundries is reaping the benefits of a move to ‘servitization’ and forecasts that it will add nearly 10% to its annual turnover.

Alucast, which employs over 100 people at its continuously growing factory in Wednesbury, has invested nearly £500,000 in new technology to ensure that it now offers customers access to Magmasoft casting simulation, prototyping and heat treatment.

The company has also expanded its CNC machining capacity to offer 5-axis machines and non-destructive testing, including X-Ray and dye-penetrant testing.

This strategy is boosting sales and the management team forecasts an additional £800,000 of turnover through customers accessing one-off services or using one element that then leads on to volume production in sand, gravity and high and low pressure castings.

Tony Sartorius, Chairman of Alucast, commented: “Manufacturing is extremely competitive, so the more value we can add to the customer, the more chance we will have of building strong, lasting relationships.

“Our business model was already unique in that we offered fully finished and machined castings from one source, and we decided to build on this by embracing servitization, developing new services that would deliver extra revenue streams.”

He continued: “Working with Aston University, we created a five-year strategy that would see us add a different offering every six months and we have now got to the stage where our customers can tap into anything from simulation software and advanced metrology to our recently launched full assembly offer.

“This approach will soon account for £800,000 of our turnover, which is roughly 10% of our annual sales. I fully expect this figure to grow as more people hear about what we do.”

Alucast offers sand, gravity and high and low pressure casting to a client base that spans automotive, fluid power, electrification and hydraulics.

Part of the Manufacturing Assembly Network (MAN), the company is currently enjoying the strongest order book in its 55-year history, and this includes technical support for one of the world’s largest automotive engineering agencies and full casting assembly for a 4×4 manufacturer.

The firm, which has recently been re-accredited to the TS16949 automotive quality standard, is also continuing to support carmakers and tier 1s with structural lightweight parts for use in next generation vehicles and electric cars.

Tony went on to add: “By offering these facilities to customers, it means we have eased supply chain complexities, allowing our clients to acquire fully functional parts ready for delivery at trackside at their premises with minimal delay.

“We still have lots of exciting plans for further additions, including ongoing training for our workforce, future collaborations with academia and the delivery of an 800-tonne die casting machine – the largest machine on our shopfloor.”

About MAN Group

Employing more than 1750 people across 13 different factories, the Manufacturing Assembly Network can offer every engineering discipline imaginable, including aluminium casting, automation and control systems, forging, plastic injection moulding, contract electronics manufacturing, precision machining, high-volume pressing, tube manipulation and welded assemblies.

In addition to Alucast, its members are Barkley Plastics, Brandauer, Grove Design, James Lister & Sons, Kimbermills International, Muller Holdings, Nemco and PP Control & Automation.

Speciality coffee roaster celebrates success seven times over at globally recognised awards

Shrewsbury-based speciality coffee roaster Iron & Fire is celebrating after an unprecedented seven of its coffee blends were awarded star status at one of the world’s most coveted food awards.

The Great Taste Awards are widely recognised as a stamp of excellence in the food and drink market and all products submitted for judging are blind tasted by a panel of experts.  Iron & Fire’s coffees have previously received awards in 2017, 2019 and 2021, but at the latest round of judging, seven of its coffees were recognised for their outstanding taste.

Iron & Fire’s ‘Severn Blend’ is a South American coffee and offers a full bodied and smooth coffee drink with rich chocolatey, nutty flavours.  The judges, when awarding it two stars, commented on its consistent, even roast and hazelnut tones. The other Iron & Fire blends recognised were: Colombian Jazz, Iron & Fire’s flagship coffee used by the best coffee houses and restaurants the length and breadth of the country; On the Rocks, a whiskey barrel aged coffee; Tutti Frutti; Choc a Bloc; Zewdu; and Mombassa Twilight.

Speaking of the awards, Iron & Fire’s founder Kev Burrows said:

“It’s great to be recognised for what we do.  Our goal is to produce great coffee that both consumers and coffee shop owners love, but it’s always reassuring to gain additional validation from those who judge our coffees purely on their taste.  The awarded coffees cover a huge spectrum of tastes and we have spent a lot of time carefully crafting roast profiles for all these coffees, so it’s nice to know the effort is appreciated.

“We’ve built a great team of people who are passionate about coffee, invested heavily in state-of-the-art equipment, and spent countless hours on our own research to perfect the coffees we produce and receiving these awards makes that all worth it.”

Not resting on their laurels, the team at Iron & Fire have also been announced as a finalist in the Great British Food Awards with two blends shortlisted in the coffee category.  Kev concludes:

“2022 has been a hugely successful year for us as a team and to be recognised by the great and the good within speciality food and drink is hugely humbling.

“We don’t take success for granted, but we do put huge amounts of passion and hard work into all that we do, so when we’re recognised on a national stage with these awards it makes all that hard work worth it. We find out how we’ve fared at the Great British Food Awards at the end of October.”
