Swansea health charities boosted by Amazon donations

Two charities related to the Swansea Bay University Health Board have received donations totalling £2,000 from the Amazon fulfilment centre in Swansea Bay.

Swansea Bay Health Charity is the official charity of Swansea Bay University Health Board.

Tŷ Olwen Hospice is a specialist palliative care unit within the cancer directorate of the health board. The charities were given £1,000 each to continue facilitating patient care and fund scientific research, training and development.

Speaking on the donations, Dan Boulger, Site Leader at Amazon in Swansea, said:

“We are pleased to support Swansea Bay Health Charity and Tŷ Olwen Hospice with donations to continue building our relationship with the Swansea Bay University Health Board. Swansea Bay Health Charity is a great advocate for the needs of the Swansea Bay University Health Board and Tŷ Olwen Hospice is dedicated to making people’s lives easier during difficult days. Everyone on site is appreciative of what the charities do for our community.”

Jonathan Michael, an employee from the Amazon fulfilment centre in Swansea, added:

“Swansea Bay Health Charity and Tŷ Olwen Hospice enhance the care given by Swansea’s incredible NHS professionals, meaning that if or when a member of the community is sick, we know we’re receiving the best care possible. I’m so thankful that Amazon is supporting the charities with these donations, and I hope they provide a welcome boost to our hospital staff.”

Claire Chubb, from Swansea Bay Health Charity, said:

“We want to say a big thank you to Dan and the Amazon team in Swansea Bay for their contribution to our work. It’s thanks to donations like theirs that we can carry on supporting patients and staff of the Swansea Bay University Health Board.”

Community donations and employee volunteering are just two of the ways Amazon supports the communities where it operates. Amazon co-founded the Multibank initiative with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to support families in need. ‘Cwtch Mawr’ Multibank opened in Swansea this year, with Faith in Families. The initiative has donated more than 4 million surplus goods to over 400,000 families across Wales, Scotland, Greater Manchester, and London.

Amazon has supported more than 700,000 students across the UK with free STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer and helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good.

Amazon partners with Comic Relief and is the official home of the charity’s iconic Red Nose. Together with its employees, customers, and partners, Amazon has raised over £4.8 million to fund projects that support people across the UK, and around the world.

Learner Isaac overcomes toughest life challenges to win national award

Having faced some of the toughest life challenges, Isaac Fabb is now an inspirational learner who is a role model for young people starting out in their careers.

The 22-year-old, who was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at 17, has overcome drug addiction and the loss of his brother-in-law to addiction to excel as a talented carpenter.

Swansea-based Isaac’s achievements have been recognised with the Skills for Work Award in the Inspire! Adult Learning Awards 2024, which he will receive at ceremony being held at the Coal Exchange Hotel, Cardiff on September 10. He is one of a dozen award winners.

Responding to his award, he said: “I’m surprised and overjoyed to see my efforts recognised and diligence and hard work has paid off. More so, how much my story can be inspirational to others.

“As a family we have overcome huge challenges and it fills me with pride to see this achievement recognised, not just for me but for all those involved, such as my family, my colleagues at Swansea City Council and Gower College Swansea who all believed in me from the start. It has given me the passion to continue on my learning journey.”

A highlight of Adult Learners’ Week in Wales from September 9-15, the Inspire! Adult Learning Awards are co-ordinated by Learning and Work Institute with support from the Welsh Government and recognise those who have demonstrated a commitment to never stop learning.

Each Inspire! winner demonstrates how learning can offer second chances, help create new career opportunities, build confidence and help communities become vibrant and successful.

The responsibility of becoming a teenage father motivated Isaac to change his life. “Looking back now, I realise that the challenges truly helped me focus and be more determined to do what I wanted to do,” he said.

Despite these challenges and leaving school with no formal qualifications, Isaac was determined to gain a career and, against a backdrop of addiction, he relentlessly applied for various college courses.

After a couple of unsuccessful attempts, largely down to his condition, he refused to give up and gained a place on a multi-skill construction course with Gower College Swansea.

He flourished and a year later secured employment with Swansea City Council as an apprentice carpenter, achieving a goal of working within his chosen career whilst learning.

On-the-job learning proved a better fit for Isaac, as he gained outstanding results and also achieved his maths GCSE whilst completing his multi-trade course.

Achieving what he thought was an impossible feat led to the college naming him as their Foundation Apprentice of the Year, and his employer incorporating him into its employability team that encourages young people to consider apprenticeships.

He is now undertaking his Level 3 with predicted grades of a double distinction and is in discussion to undertake an HNC in Construction Management.

“Though the five-year journey was bumpy, I am eager to continue and embrace the next challenge,” added Isaac. “I can say that knowing I was going to be a father at such an early age spurred me to not only kick the addiction but to stand up to be the young adult I needed to be.

“Although there were stumbling blocks, there was nothing more rewarding than achieving a career that I once thought was well beyond my reach.”

Medi Williams, Commercial Bid Specialist at Gower College Swansea, said: “I nominated Isaac on behalf of the college because he is an inspirational learner who has become a role model for those who may not have thought adult education was them.”

For adults in Wales keen to start their learning journey, in-person taster courses and online sessions will run throughout September and during Adult Learners’ Week. Advice and information will be available locally to inspire people to take up learning as a way of increasing their employability, building life skills and improving their quality of life.

Lynne Neagle, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Education, said: “The effort, talent and determination on display from all the finalists in this year’s Inspire! Adult Learning Awards is truly inspiring.

“I am determined that Wales should be a place where everyone has the chance to return to learning and renew their career at whatever stage of life they are at. Adult Learners’ Week is a great opportunity to discover your passion for learning or brush up on your existing skills. I’d encourage anyone looking for support or change of direction to look at the support available from Working Wales.

“Learning as an adult is not only a great way to improve employability but is also a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, as well as boosting self-esteem and confidence.”

Joshua Miles, Learning and Work Institute Director, said: “I would like to congratulate all the nominees and winners of the 2024 Inspire! Adult Learner Awards and to thank them for sharing their inspiring stories with us.

“They have overcome significant challenges, such as health issues, unemployment, low confidence, or caring responsibilities, and have transformed their lives through learning. In doing so, they have also inspired others to follow in their footsteps and have made a positive difference to communities across Wales.

“Learning is a lifelong journey that can enrich our lives in many ways. Now more than ever, it is important that we support and celebrate adults in Wales who return to learning later in life in the hope of a brighter future.”

Amazon in Swansea throws annual summer bash

Teammates from the Amazon fulfilment centre in Swansea partied at Brangwyn Hall at this year’s mid-year thank you from Amazon for their work delivering for customers around the UK.

A climbing wall, inflatables and games formed part of the celebrations that saw Amazon employees join with their families and friends to see out the summer season.

Angela Pitis works at Amazon in Swansea and attended the summer party. She said: “Our events are even more special when we can bring our loved ones along. I had a great time in the sunshine, enjoying the many treats my teammates had so thoughtfully organised. I’m looking forward to next year’s party already!”

Dan Boulger, Site Leader at Amazon in Swansea added: “Come August, school is out and spirits are high at Amazon in Swansea. Our annual summer party gives us an opportunity to stop and celebrate our accomplishments together, while having some fun with our families and friends. It’s a real treat and a lovely day.”

From Swansea to Cambridge: Amazon supports UK’s leading heart and lung hospital

The Amazon fulfilment centre in Swansea has donated £1,000 to Royal Papworth Hospital Charity in Cambridge.

The donation follows a request for support from an employee whose sister recently received a heart transplant at Royal Papworth Hospital, which performed the UK’s first successful heart transplant back in 1979 and has continued to be a world leader in heart and lung transplantation.

Darrell George is the general manager’s assistant and community ambassador at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Swansea. He’s been part of the team at the site since 2011, when he joined as temporary fulfilment centre employee.

Part of Darrell’s role at Amazon involves supporting organisations local to the fulfilment centre in Swansea, while empowering his colleagues to engage alongside him.

Earlier this year, Darrell attended a national conference in Birmingham with his colleagues from around the UK to discuss Amazon’s community initiatives for the year ahead. The week prior, his sister Hayley had received word that she was eligible to receive a heart transplant at Royal Papworth Hospital.

Spurred on by the content of the conference, Darrell requested that a £1,000 donation be made to Royal Papworth Hospital Charity to help other families like his.

Speaking on the importance of the hospital to his family, Darrell said: “Royal Papworth is one of just five hospitals in the UK that performs heart and lung transplants on adults and it performs more than any other UK centre. People come from all over the UK to have surgery at these hospitals, which obviously comes at great cost.

“When she was 17, my sister was diagnosed with a genetic disease called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which affects the pumping ability of the left ventricle in the heart. In 2022 she found out that she’d need to have a heart transplant, and earlier this year she underwent the surgery to receive one. We are hugely grateful that Hayley was given the opportunity to receive a new heart, and for the surgeons and medical staff who looked after her during the process.

“Royal Papworth Hospital Charity goes a mile further to absorb costs for families that aren’t in the position to afford local accommodation whilst their loved ones are in hospital. I can’t imagine going through the stress of Hayley undergoing surgery and not knowing how I was going to afford the costs of travelling from Wales to Cambridge to look after her. The charity is such a valuable support to people in what can be a really scary situation, and that’s why I wanted to support it.”

Alongside the donation from Amazon in Swansea, Darrell supported his nephew as he ran the Swansea Half Marathon to raise money for Royal Papworth Hospital Charity. Robbie George completed the half marathon in under an hour and a half and raised a further £900 for the charity, which was donated alongside Amazon’s £1,000.

Shelley Green, Fundraising & Stewardship Manager from Royal Papworth Hospital Charity, said: “Our patients like Darrell’s sister Hayley, their families and our staff are at the heart of everything we do. The Hospital treats some of the most life-threatening conditions within the NHS, and our Charity bridges the gap between NHS funding and the reality of providing outstanding care.

We are humbled that Amazon has contributed to our resources with this fabulous donation which will help patients now and in the future. We also want to say a huge thanks to Darrell, Robbie and Hayley for being huge supporters and requesting the Amazon donation.”

Almost half of workers in Wales want more flexibility – and almost 1 in 4 with children would consider term-time-only working, according to new survey

  • New survey from YouGov, commissioned by Amazon, explores Welsh views on workplace flexibility
  • While 45% of workers in Wales would like more flexible working options from their employer, more than one in three workers (38%) say they have NO option to work flexibly at all
  • Almost one in four (23%) of all parents with children aged 18 and under would consider term-time working; an innovative option recently introduced by Amazon for its Operations employees in Swansea and across the UK

One in 3 parents want flexible working – over a third say employer offers zero flexibility

As parents across Wales plan ways to keep their children active and entertained during the school holidays, new research reveals that almost one in three working parents in Wales would consider term-time only working to improve work/life balance.

A YouGov poll commissioned by Amazon, reveals almost half (45%) of working parents in Wales want more flexibility in their jobs, while almost one in four (23%) parents in Wales said they would consider switching to a term-time contract.

Furthermore, more than a third (38%) of those questioned in Wales say their current employer offers no opportunity to work flexibly at all.

Amazon say their term-time only jobs help employees and their families

The survey follows a recent expansion of Amazon’s own ground-breaking term-time working option which aims to help employees and their families. The flexibility guarantees time off during the summer, Christmas and Easter school holidays for parents, grandparents and guardians of school-age children.

Launched as a response to employee feedback, term-time working is now available to thousands of people across Amazon’s operations network following a pilot in the company’s larger fulfilment centres to understand how the option could better support families during school holidays.

The company also recently introduced Amazon Anytime; a flexible part-time contract for a minimum of 80 hours a month, which lets employees pick and mix the shifts which suit their needs – part-day or full-day, day or night, weekday or weekend.

The new survey also reveals:

  • Three quarters (72%) of working parents in Wales say flexible working is a priority when thinking about their next job
  • A better work-life balance (58%) and less commuting (54%) are the top perceived benefits of flexibility for working parents in Wales

Swansea Dad: “Flexibility has a very positive impact and creates a great balance in the family unit”

David Brownhill (pictured with his daughters above) works at Amazon’s Swansea Fulfilment centre. The single dad, who has twin teenage daughters, joined Amazon six years ago after being made redundant from a previous job. He switched to a term-time contract last year and explains this gives him the stabilisation and flexibility he needs to prioritise his family. He says the contracts means he has ‘prioritised his children’ and it’s important they ‘know he’s there’.

“I’m turning 50 over the summer and we’re going to try and do something really special. One daughter will be abroad – volunteering for a time – but we’re trying to get away. We’re thinking about Egypt, but we like Cornwall too. It’s all about spending this special time with them before they’re older; creating more great memories after some challenges we’ve experienced.

“This contract takes so much pressure off, particularly as a single parent, when you’re managing a number of conflicting priorities. I’m trying to do the best I can for my kids and this flexibility gives me certainty.

“Before Amazon, my previous job took up much of my life and I lost some of the magical times with them when they were young. As I’ve got older my mindset has changed and I’m trying to catch up and be there more. This flexibility has a very positive impact and creates a great balance in the family unit. We’re all happier for it.”

John Boumphrey, Amazon’s UK Country Manager, said: “These findings clearly demonstrate the huge importance of workplace flexibility, and why it matters so much to employees in Wales and across the UK. At Amazon, we’re always listening to our employees and innovating for our people, and we’re delighted to offer these ground-breaking contracts to help provide employees and their families more flexible options.

“We have a variety of different full-time and part-time contracts, and we’ve also provided a four-day working week for our fulfilment centre employees for many years. Term-time working and Amazon Anytime are examples of how we continue to use feedback to support our people, help with childcare needs, and give families more time together.”

Amazon employees can also take advantage of Amazon’s pioneering Career Choice programme, which pre-pays up to 95% of costs for nationally accredited courses in high-demand fields (up to £8,000 over four years), regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.

Competitive pay, comprehensive benefits and a modern, safe and engaging work environment are provided for Amazon employees. The roles pay a minimum of £12.30 per hour depending on location, as well as up to £33,500 a year for degree-level apprenticeships. All employees can also benefit from a package that includes private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, and an employee discount – which combined are worth thousands annually – as well as a company pension plan.

Amazon has been named as a ‘Top Employer UK 2024’ by the Top Employer Institute, one of the world’s most prestigious certifications in the field of human resources management. This award recognises Amazon’s commitment to the development and well-being of its employees. In addition to the UK accolade, Amazon has also been certified as one of the Top Employers in Europe for a second consecutive year.

Amazon was also recently ranked first in the top 50 employers of veterans in the UK by the GREAT British Employers of Veterans, a comprehensive benchmark of the leading companies that employ veterans.

Leading family-law firm opens new office in Swansea Bay

Family law firm, Grant Stephens Family Law, has opened its second office in the Swansea Bay area due to expansion in both clients, turnover, and headcount.

The new office is headed up by Director, Nia Thomas, and is located in one of Swansea’s most sought-after locations on the waterfront, overlooking the marina.

Due to the team members having many clients in Swansea and having personal and professional connections to the area, it was a natural next step for the firm’s expansion, offering specialist family law services throughout the South-West of Wales.

The initial team will be comprised of existing employees from the Cardiff office including Nia Thomas – Director, Lowri Walters – Family Solicitor, and James Jones – Trainee Solicitor.

Several of the team members at Grant Stephens Family Law are also fluent Welsh speakers, catering to clients that speak Welsh as a first language.

Grant Stephens Family Law hopes to grow the Swansea office this year by increasing the headcount to cope with increased client demands.

Nia Thomas, Director and Head of the Swansea office, says:

“Since we opened in 2013, we’ve grown year-on-year in headcount and enquiries, with many of our clients coming from the South-West Wales area. This is why expanding into Swansea was the next logical step for the firm.

“Over the last year of working at Grant Stephens Family Law, there’s been a lot of positive change at the firm, and I’ve been working alongside some of the most incredible talent in the legal industry.

“Being from South West Wales myself, and having worked in firms in Swansea previously, I’m excited to spearhead this new phase of growth at the firm with the objective of getting the best results for our clients continuing to be at the heart of everything we do.”

The business currently has 15 members of staff and will also continue running from their Park Place office in central Cardiff.

Grant Stephens, Founder and Managing Director, says:

“I am immensely proud of the team and all their hard work in contributing to the company’s growth.”

“Expanding to a second office has been on our radar for some time and opening in Wales’ second biggest city made the most sense based on our already established presence within Swansea and West Wales.”

“It was clear from the outset that Nia’s values aligned with our own. Since Nia began with us, she has demonstrated great leadership, exceptional expertise and an unwavering commitment to putting clients first. This, in addition to her already established connections in Swansea makes her exactly the right person to head the new Swansea Office.”

The office opened on August 1st at Suite 2, J Shed Arcade, SA1 Waterfront, Swansea, SA1 8PL.

Celebrations in Swansea for Amazon Prime Day 2024

The team from Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Swansea enjoyed a week-long series of activities to celebrate the return of Prime Day.

Employees were treated to a wheel of fortune, bingo and t-shirt giveaways as they picked, packed and shipped Prime Day products for customers in Swansea and around the UK. The celebrations were organised to say thank you to the team for delivering smiles to customers during the annual event.

Christopher Bailey is the Senior Operations Manager at Amazon in Swansea who took part in the activities on site. He said: “We love Prime Day at Amazon in location. It’s a great day with a lot of buzz and excitement and the events organised to mark the event this year have been fantastic.”

Dan Boulger, Site Leader at Amazon in Swansea, added: “One of the most significant dates in an Amazon team member’s calendar is Prime Day, and there was great excitement on site as we prepared for the big day. I am impressed at how we came together this year to make the event so successful – the celebrations were well-deserved, as they always are.”

Amazon employees receive competitive pay and comprehensive benefits. Pay starts between £12.30 and £13 per hour per hour depending on location and employees are offered a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection and an employee discount as well as a company pension plan.

Amazon employees can also take advantage of Amazon’s pioneering Career Choice programme, which pre-pays 95% of tuition for courses in high-demand fields, up to £8,000 over four years, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.

Amazon also provides opportunities to improve existing skills or learn new ones through internal career progression opportunities such as cross-training, transferring to a different department and promotion into a managerial role.

Swansea young people build career skills with Supported Internships at Amazon

Three young people from Swansea have boosted their career skills by taking part in a Supported Internship at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Swansea Bay. Amazon launched its Supported Internship programme in 2021, to help young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to gain work experience and skills as they transition to employment.

Latest figures show that just 4.8% of people with a learning disability and autism, that are known to adult social care, are employed. Supported Internships form part of a Government scheme designed to help change this stat, helping young people with additional educational needs and disabilities gain work experience as they transition from education to employment.

In 2023, Amazon started to work with national charity DFN Project Search, to expand their programme to help more people with SEND gain invaluable workplace skills. The internship combines classroom education and practical work experience in different Amazon roles to provide a rounded experience for interns.

Ricardo Pesarillo (20), Matthew Norman (18) and Lewis D’Angeli-Squires (21) from Swansea are some of the young people who have taken part in a Supported Internship at the Amazon fulfilment centre in the city.

Ricardo, Matthew and Lewis have now completed their internships and have taken permanent roles at Amazon in Swansea Bay, working in the customer returns team.

Ricardo explains the journey he’s been on through the internship programme. “I started my internship late last year, and I’ve moved around different teams during my training. I’ve picked and packed products, and now I work in returns. I find my job interesting and varied and it’s been a great experience for me,” he said.

Amazon is Ricardo’s first job, and he explains what he likes about working at Amazon. “The team here is great,” he said. “They’re so friendly, helpful and they’re a real laugh. I enjoy coming to work and getting to know people – that’s been massive for me. You spend a lot of time with your colleagues, and I feel lucky to have the workmates I have. They have helped me so much during my internship.”

Ricardo also called out the support that Amazon provides for his community. “The people are great here, but so is the work the company does in the community. We have lots of events, support local charities and do volunteering. I really like that,” he said.

During Matthew’s time on the Amazon Supported Internship programme, he says has learned new skills. What’s the most important skill or ability he’s learned? “I think it’s my confidence,” he said. “When I first started with Amazon, I was reluctant to ask people for help. I didn’t have the confidence to talk to people. Now I am settled here, I feel more able to ask for support when I need it. My team is always there to help me and that has helped me to approach them for help. I am comfortable talking to anyone now and that’s made a big difference for me.”

Does Matthew have a highlight from his time so far at Amazon? “Working on the picking team on Valentine’s Day was lots of fun,” he said. “I saw a lot of last-minute orders coming through from people who must have forgotten to buy a gift for their partner, and I enjoyed helping them with that special purchase.”

Speaking about his future, Matthew reveals that he has big ambitions for his career at Amazon. “I would love to keep working my way up to one day become a team leader,” he said. “After that, I’d love to train in robotics and move to Amazon in the US – that’s my dream!”

Lewis gives a special mention to his Swansea colleagues. “The team here is amazing. They look after all of us interns and they’re always there to support us. They also join in when we play pool competitions in the canteen. I really like that,” he said.

Reflecting on his time on the Amazon Supported Internship programme, Lewis reveals what advice he’d give himself on day one if he could go back in time. “Listen to everyone,” he said. “If you listen to your instructors and you follow all the rules, you will not go wrong. Try to enjoy it too. Be confident that it will work out for the best.”

How has the internship programme helped Lewis? “I’ve found my voice. I’ve become more assertive. I’ve learned that I have a contribution to make, and I should not be afraid to speak up, inside and outside work. It’s something my Mum has commented on too. It’s a big deal for me,” Lewis said.

Ricardo, Matthew and Lewis completed their Supported Internship at Amazon in June. Their success was celebrated at a graduation ceremony at the Swansea fulfilment centre, which was attended by their families and Amazon colleagues.

Amazon Swansea Site Leader, Dan Boulger, said: “It’s been great to have Ricardo, Matthew and Lewis complete their Supported Internships at Amazon in Swansea. We’ve loved having them on the team throughout their internship and are looking forward to welcoming them to the team as they join us as employees. The graduation ceremony was a great way to celebrate all the interns in this years as they progress to the next stages of their careers.”

“It has been brilliant to hear young people speak about their Supported Internship journeys with Amazon this year and to join in with the graduation celebrations across our sites. Young people like Ricardo, Matthew and Lewis talking about the experiences they have had, the skills they have learnt and the opportunities opening up is the definition of success for our collaboration. I am excited to see what we can achieve in the future.” – Carmel McKeogh, Chief Executive, DFN Project SEARCH

Since 2021, there have been over 50 Supported Internship interns based in various Amazon operations sites across the UK. Many interns, like Ricardo, Matthew and Lewis, have gone on to work full time at Amazon.

University celebrates double success in aerospace competition

Swansea University students claimed the honours at a unique challenge designed to celebrate the talents of aerospace engineers of the future.

This year’s IT FLIES competition was hosted for a fourth year by Swansea University and the two home teams ended up as joint winners after a gruelling day in front of industry experts.

IT FLIES is a student aircraft design and handling competition run each year in the USA and the UK and organised by Merlin Flight Simulation Group.

The Swansea teams, from the Faculty of Science and Engineering  designed an aerial firefighting aircraft capable of carrying and dropping 2000kg of water or fire-retardant material, while having the capability to deploy smoke jumpers and dire fighting equipment.

Representatives of the two victorious Swansea teams

They were competing against students from the University of South Wales, the University of Manchester and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.  Entries from the visiting teams included a Wings for Aid UAV, a 4th generation fighter jet aircraft, and a supersonic business jet.

Each team gave a 10-minute project presentation, followed by their aircraft designs being flown and assessed by the Test Pilots on one of Swansea University’s MP521 simulators.

The Swansea team led by Liam Maloney also won the prize for the best project presentation with a supersonic business jet design by Adam Cleaver from USW claiming the prize for the most innovative design.

Dr David Philpott judged the presentations and the test pilots were Gordon McClymont and Rhys Williams. The winners were presented with their prizes by Chris Neal, managing director of Merlin Flight Simulation Group.

Marion Neal, from Merlin, said: “We were delighted to see that entries were as varied as ever, and of a very high standard this year. It was great to give the students the opportunity to expand their knowledge of flight and to learn from our experienced test pilots.”

Swansea University’s head of aerospace engineering Professor Ben Evans said: “We are very proud of the aerospace education we offer and were more than happy to host the competition once again this year.

“This was a very close-run contest but we are thrilled that the Swansea teams put up such a good performance. However, we hope that all the students who took part were inspired by the experience and will continue to on their journey in the aerospace industry.”

City schools supported by Amazon Swansea

The team from Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Swansea has made donations totalling £2,000 to two primary schools in the region.

Portmead Primary School in Portmead and Brynmenyn Primary School in Bridgend received £1,000 each to continue providing positive and inclusive learning communities for children in Swansea.

Michael James, Expressive Arts Lead at Portmead Primary School, said the donation to the school will be used to support learners in developing their skills across digital media platforms with the purchase of electronic equipment.

Dan Boulger, Site Leader at Amazon in Swansea, said:

“Schools are fundamental for providing nurturing and inspiring environments where pupils can fulfil their potential. It’s important to all of us at Amazon that we invest in the individuals and places that contribute to children’s daily lives and help benefit future generations; that’s why Portmead Primary School and Brynmenyn Primary School are so deserving of these donations.”

Darrell George, an employee from Amazon in Swansea, said:

“Portmead and Brynmenyn are vibrant schools that empower children to find their passion. I’ve found it very fulfilling supporting these local schools through Amazon, as it’s showed me the value I bring to my community and encourages me to help more people.”

Allison Evans, Headteacher of Portmead Primary School, added:

“By donating to our school, you are helping young people build valuable qualities for success in both their academic and personal lives. We are very grateful to Dan, Darrell and the Amazon team for thinking of us.”

Community donations [and employee volunteering] are just two of the ways Amazon supports the communities where it operates. Amazon co-founded the Multibank initiative with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to support families in poverty. The Multibank ‘Cwtch Mawr’ opened in Swansea this year, with Faith in Families, providing surplus essentials, donated by Amazon and others, directly to those in need. The initiative aims to support more than more than 40,000 families across South Wales.

Amazon has supported more than 500,000 students across the UK with free computer science and STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer. Amazon helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good.

Amazon partners with Comic Relief to help people tackle poverty and is the official home of the charity’s iconic Red Nose. Together with its employees, customers, and partners, Amazon has raised over £4.8 million to fund projects that support people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and tackle issues such as homelessness, mental health problems, and food insecurity across the UK, and around the world.
