Jabra makes a sound choice as it extends relationship with PTC

One of the world’s leading brands in professional headsets has turned to the power of Creo to push the boundaries of audio excellence.

Jabra, which is part of the global GN Group, has extended its long-term relationship with Reading-based PTC to ensure that its engineering team can continue to turn designers’ sketches into finished products that are used by hundreds of thousands of consumers in the office, home, and music studio every year.

The digital transformation’s specialist software has been the preferred CAD tool for more than five years and this is being driven by industry-leading surface modelling features.

“Once upon a time, a headset was a relatively simple design that was straightforward for both designer and engineer,” said Claus Ellegaard Madsen, Senior Mechanical Engineer at GN, the company behind the Jabra brand.

“Today, the story is different, with modern headsets being based on highly complex, organic designs to ensure the best possible user experience.”

He continued: “As you would expect, our design requirements are increasing all the time, and we wouldn’t be able to do these extremely complex organic designs without the help of Creo and the possibilities it offers in terms of, for example, very complex surface modelling.”

One of Jabra’s overall design philosophies is to have a master model that contains almost all the components in the Jabra universe. This makes it easier for the company to collaborate across the organisation, as all departments refer to the same master and the same data.

“It helps us in the sense that we can further develop on the foundation we already have and reuse the design elements that work well for us – both in terms of optimising the individual designs and minimising the risk of errors,” said Claus.

PTC’s Elliot Clarke added his support: “With ever-increasing customer demands and, therefore an increased focus on design, Creo plays an important role in Jabra’s design phase. The ISDX module in Creo allows design engineers to control everything about surfaces.

“They start with curves, they build surfaces on those curves, and they can really control the flow and curvature of the surfaces as they connect. It’s great to see Jabra utilising these technologies to deliver a best-in-class audio experience to their customers and we look forward to working with them in the future.”

Just a few months ago, Jabra launched its new generation of Elite series of wireless earphones called Jabra Elite 8 Active and Jabra Elite 10.

Fluid Ideas creates drive-in Derby studio to rival Manchester and London facilities

Creative agency Fluid Ideas has unveiled the latest phase of its expansion – a drive-in studio for filming, photography, recording and events.

The studio, called Flux, features an infinity cove, a fully-functional kitchen set and an audio booth for recording voiceovers and podcasts.

Fluid has invested a six-figure sum to transform a 1,300sq ft building next to its headquarters in a former cotton mill at Darley Abbey Mills, a World Heritage Site on the outskirts of Derby.

Jamie Hovell, an associate partner at Fluid, said the new multipurpose facility – in the old Engine House – gives the Midlands a genuine alternative to Manchester and London for filming, photoshoots and recordings.

“The combination of the drive-in feature, the infinity cove with overhead lighting rig and the kitchen set means we have a distinctive and really versatile space which our team will utilise for client projects,” he said.

“In just 10 weeks, we’ve transformed a vacant and unloved industrial building to create a real point of difference for Fluid and the region, and one which we are confident will appeal to our clients and the wider creative community.

“It’s a spacious open studio with plenty of space for lighting and cameras. The infinity cove is brightly lit and curves into the floor, so there are no corners or shadows. It can easily be repainted according to the colour needs of each client.

“We’d been scoping out places to create a facility of this kind for some time, and visited a number of potential sites before the Engine House became available. It’s the perfect location, and seeing the new space we had envisioned for so long transformed from a blank canvas and spring into life over the weeks has been a real joy.”

Jamie added: “We see Flux becoming a hub in the Midlands. Until now, people have had to travel to Manchester or London for such a facility.

“Now there is somewhere closer to home which businesses, art directors, marketing teams and other agencies can hire for their own projects. It can also be used for off-site meetings, product launches, get-togethers and workshops.”

Joint managing director Phil Harvey and Jamie led the renovation project for Fluid. Associate partner Carrie Gregory led on the branding and interior design. The trio were supported by a wider team including Dan Chadwick, Bec Utley and Liv Beighton to bring the proposition to life.

The drive-in capability of the new studio is aimed at Fluid’s roster of automotive clients, while the high-end kitchen is envisaged for a variety of uses, including food styling and household product photos and videos, recipe guides, and for meetings and events.

Fluid is an award-winning, full-service agency which celebrated its 20th anniversary in November 2023. It has a team of nearly 60 creatives, strategists, developers, designers, artworkers, CGI artists, photographers, copywriters, social media specialists, motion-designers and digital marketeers.

It serves a global client base across sectors including automotive, manufacturing and distribution, education and training, property and developments, health and wellbeing, retirement living, leisure and hospitality, food and drink.

Dan, a partner and art director at Fluid, said: “I think I can comfortably speak for all of us in saying how immensely excited we are about the new opportunities this studio will bring.

“Having a facility of this kind in-house has been a longstanding ambition for Fluid. It looks fantastic and, as well as serving as a catalyst for our own creative aspirations, we envision this space as a dynamic hub for our clients and the wider creative community.

“It’s not just about elevating our offering; it’s about providing a versatile canvas for clients – new and existing – to bring their visions to life, fostering connections and nurturing talent. The prospects and potential are huge.”

EPOS: Audio Technology Designed for Hybrid Working is the Smart Investment for any Future-facing Business

Today, many business leaders are embracing a permanent shift to hybrid working, but to make the model truly successful in the mid to long-term they must learn from the experience they gained from the switch to remote caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to date.

In particular, investing in the right technology will be essential to building a long-term hybrid model that works both for businesses and their employees. Audio technology has played a major part in the remote working experience, with research by EPOS and Ipsos showing that in 2021 the average worker spends over 7 hours a week on activities related to sound and meetings, an increase of two hours compared with research conducted by EPOS in 2020.

The EPOS research also revealed a major discrepancy between the expectations of business leaders and employees around where people will be working in the future. More than half of all global decision-makers in workplaces surveyed believe employees will work more from the company address in the future than they do currently, compared with just 26% of employees.

Already many decision-makers are recognizing the importance of audio, with 86% planning to invest in audio in the next year, for example, 32% more employees will be offered headsets or personal speakerphones.

While the hybrid model may mean fewer people commuting every day, the desire to work on the go is unlikely to change and businesses should enable those who want to work on the go with the best possible tools to do so. For those switching regularly between the home, office and elsewhere, flexible audio solutions enable them to make the most of their time. As we move to a hybrid set-up, meetings themselves are likely to become a hybrid experience with video collaborations solutions will become integral to enabling the digital workforce to become more collaborative, instantaneous, and intimate.

“Forward-thinking businesses making hybrid working plans must invest in the right technology to help curb the pain points their employees have been facing and continue to face”, says Jeppe Dalberg-Larsen, President at EPOS. “Audio technology needs to be at the heart of this investment. While we may not know exactly what the future will look like, we know that the workplace is no longer simply a physical space, it is wherever you are. Businesses that succeed in our hybrid world will do so by listening to the needs of their employees, customers, and other stakeholders. Only by doing this can we navigate the hybrid model. By audio technology that performs, wherever and whenever we do business, we can be professional as always.”
