RD Group CEO honoured with BESA President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement

Raven Delta (RD) Group CEO, Dave Kieft, has been recognised with the President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement at the BESA Awards 2024, which took place on October 17 at The Brewery, London. The award, presented by Adrian Hurley, President of the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA), is one of the industry’s highest honours, given to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the sector.

Kieft was honoured for his visionary leadership and pivotal role in developing the world’s first technical standard focused on the health and wellbeing of building occupants – British Standard BS40102 (Part One). This standard, created in response to pioneering legislation from the Welsh Government, has become a cornerstone in the global effort to improve indoor environmental quality (IEQ).

Kieft’s work, which began nearly a decade ago, culminated in a standard that has gained international recognition for its role in addressing the need for healthier indoor environments, especially as the Covid-19 pandemic brought IEQ into the spotlight. The standard was fast-tracked by the British Standards Institute (BSI) and is already being adopted in multiple countries.

Kieft’s commitment to the project and his leadership in bringing together technical experts and standards bodies were key to the rapid development and approval of BS40102. His work has set a new benchmark for the measurement, metering, and monitoring of indoor environments, ensuring that health and wellbeing are central to future building designs.

Although Kieft could not attend the awards ceremony due to other commitments, Steve Pridmore, of Raven Delta Group, accepted the award on his behalf. In a pre-recorded message, Kieft expressed his gratitude to the team that supported the standard’s development and outlined his vision for expanding this work into the domestic building sector.

The President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement highlights Kieft’s lasting impact on the building services industry, especially his drive to ensure the wellbeing of future generations through healthier indoor environments. His efforts continue to shape the future of the industry, and his leadership in sustainability and environmental health is widely recognised.

Adrian Hurley, President of BESA, introducing the award:

“This year’s recipient was the driving force behind the world’s first technical standard for the health and wellbeing of building occupants. Inspired by groundbreaking legislation passed by the Welsh Government aimed at safeguarding future generations, this individual set about galvanising technical experts and standards-setting bodies to turn a legislative requirement into practical measures.”

“For his vision, tenacity, and determination to improve indoor environments for the good of communities worldwide, this year’s President’s Award goes to Raven Delta Group’s CEO, Dave Kieft.”

Raven Delta Group CEO, Dave Kieft, has been recognised with the President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement at the BESA Awards 2024.

Dave Kieft, expressing his gratitude after receiving the award:

“I am truly honoured to receive this prestigious award from BESA, and I’m incredibly grateful for the recognition. However, this achievement is not just mine—it reflects the hard work, dedication, and expertise of a remarkable team of individuals who have worked tirelessly over the years to bring the BS40102 standard to life.”

“This award is a testament to the collaborative effort of many, including the technical experts, standards bodies, and industry partners who have contributed along the way. I’d especially like to recognise Chris Jenkins, who led the original steering group and has been instrumental throughout the process. Without his leadership and the support of BESA, this achievement would not have been possible.”

“The next step is to continue this vital work by expanding these principles into the domestic environment, ensuring that we safeguard the health and wellbeing of future generations. I am immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, and I look forward to working with the team and our partners to drive even greater advancements in the years to come.”

RDM Electrical & Mechanical Services celebrates double industry awards success

RDM Electrical & Mechanical Services, a leading South Wales-based building services company and part of the wider Raven Delta (RD) Group, is celebrating a remarkable achievement, having secured victories at both the ECA Industry Awards 2024 and the BESA Awards 2024 for its work on the Cross Hands East Strategic Employment Site (SES) project.

The company won the Best Sustainability Project at the ECA Awards, held on October 11 at the Hilton Bankside, London, and just days later triumphed again by taking home the Net Zero Initiative of the Year award at the BESA Awards, which took place on October 17 at The Brewery, London. Instrumental to RDM’s awards’ success is RD Group sister-company, EFT Consult, who helped coordinate and develop the scheme’s design.

The ECA Industry Awards are renowned for celebrating excellence across the electrotechnical and engineering services industry, and RDM’s win for the Cross Hands East SES project underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable innovation. The project was praised for its cutting-edge design and installation of mechanical and electrical services, achieving substantial carbon reduction, energy efficiency, and strong community engagement.

At the BESA Awards, which recognise excellence in building services, RDM’s work on the Cross Hands East SES project stood out for meeting ambitious net-zero carbon targets. The development was lauded for its forward-thinking approach, combining sustainability with long-term environmental and community benefits.

The Cross Hands East SES project is a collaboration between Carmarthenshire County Council, the Welsh Government, and the Active Building Centre, where RDM and EFT Consult played a pivotal role. The project achieved high standards of carbon reduction and energy efficiency, with the installation of solar photovoltaic panels and electric vehicle charging stations, significantly reducing reliance on non-renewable energy. Energy usage was kept to less than 55 kWh per square meter annually, setting new benchmarks for operational energy consumption.

RDM’s environmental leadership throughout the project was evident, with sustainable drainage systems implemented to manage stormwater runoff and a rigorous waste management strategy that diverted 96% of construction waste from landfills. In addition to its environmental achievements, RDM contributed to local workforce development by providing over 1,900 hours of apprenticeship experience, supporting the next generation of skilled workers and boosting local employment.

RDM’s use of the Active Building Design Toolkit, a first for Wales, along with the integration of a bespoke Building Management System (BMS), enabled real-time monitoring and optimisation of energy performance. These innovations ensured that the project not only met its sustainability goals but also provided valuable data to inform future developments.

Dave Kieft, Raven Delta (RD) Group CEO, said:

“We are incredibly proud to have been recognised by both the ECA and BESA for our commitment to sustainability and innovation. The Cross Hands East SES project exemplifies our ability to deliver cutting-edge solutions that not only reduce carbon emissions but also contribute to long-term environmental and community benefits.”

“These awards are a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of our entire team and partners. We believe that projects like Cross Hands East SES will set new standards for sustainability in the building services industry, and we look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible in this space.”

Raven Delta (RD) Group is an innovative, high quality, multi-faceted Group of companies – comprising EFT Consult, RDM Electrical & Mechanical Services, and DRS FM Services – providing full building services solutions.

RD Group employs a holistic approach to every project it undertakes, with a real focus on improving the standard of indoor environmental quality and, therefore, the health and wellbeing of all the buildings’ occupants. In 2021, the British Standards Institute (BSI) recognised the importance of the Group’s pioneering work in this field – the creation of PAS 3003 – by incorporating it into a new British Standard designed to assess indoor environmental quality. RD Group is also passionate about supporting, training and inspiring the next generation of building services engineers and encouraging career development for those already working in the industry. It achieves this through community engagement projects, school and college visits, apprenticeships, and ongoing personal and professional development for its staff.

Use of geopolymer injection treatment earns shortlist

Geobear’s first use of technology on clay soil under a road asset wins nomination

The Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) has shortlisted global ground engineering contractor Geobear for the CIHT Technology and Innovation award. Geobear’s entry presented its work with Ringway Jacob for Surrey County Council to stabilise deep, shrinkable clay soil beneath the A323 road in the South East of England, using its tried and tested geopolymer injection treatment. The awards will be presented at 8 Northumberland Avenue, Trafalgar Square, London on June 13, 2024.

Surrey County Council faced regular costly and disruptive road resurfacing due to the frequent shrink-swell cycle of clay soils. The apparent alternative was excavation and removal of hundreds of tonnes of clay, and replacement with a gravel sub-base. This too would have been expensive, carbon-intensive and would have caused closure of a main road for several weeks, disrupting the local community and likely forcing a school to shut.

The council approached Geobear to find a third way that would allow it to avoid these high costs and inconvenience. Shrinkable clay soil has a high plasticity index, expanding with water then compacting when dry. This expansion and contraction cycle underground sees the ground’s surface shift and damages overlying infrastructure or buildings.

Geobear, a ground settlement expert, uses an array of injectable geopolymers that expand underground to fill gaps and compress soil, in this case clay. This stabilises the asset long-term, significantly reducing the clay’s shrink-swell capacity and protecting the road surface.

“We developed this solution specifically for Surrey County Council,” explained Richard Holmes, infrastructure director at Geobear UK. “Our engineers assessed the site, specified the key points at which injection holes should be drilled and calculated the quantity of geopolymer needed. We stabilised the clay in situ by injecting our geopolymer at three metres depth. No excavation was needed and the daily lives of people in the area were virtually unaffected: the road reopened 30 minutes after treatment.

“The environmental impact of our projects is a big planning consideration for Geobear too. Not only do we avoid the physical disruption to the local ecosystem of digging up three metres of pavement for miles, our solution produces 62 per cent lower emissions than traditional excavation methods, as verified by Carbon Footprint Ltd.”

Our priority is delivering cost-effective solutions for the travelling public in Surrey that cause as little disruption as possible, which the Geobear solution provides,” said Amanda Richards, assistant director of highways at Surrey County Council and chair of the UK Roads Boards’ Road Condition Management Group.

“We approached Geobear because it ticked many boxes for us: its solution is swift, economical, low carbon, enhances workplace safety and preserves access to surrounding utilities.”

Other local authorities are now considering this innovative approach for similar applications across the UK. Sertec Group named as Company of the Year at the ‘Metalforming Oscars’

A supplier of millions of components every day to cars, lorries and engines has been named as the Confederation of British Metalforming’s Company of the Year at a prestigious event last night.

Sertec Group, which employs over 2200 people across ten global locations, beat off strong competition from the sector to win the main award, with judges impressed by ‘its journey to excellence’ that has seen it enjoy a major increase in productivity, improvements in on-time delivery in full and the implementation of a comprehensive employee engagement approach.

With 200 people in attendance at The Grand Hotel in Birmingham, the Coleshill Headquartered company was joined on stage by KMF Precision Sheet Metal’s Kayleigh Simm (Apprentice of the Year) and G-TEM, who was a double winner on the evening (HSE Initiative and Energy Efficiency).
