American Golf ‘reset’ leads to impressive £5.7m upswing

A ‘reset’ for American Golf, the UK’s leading golf retailer, has led to an impressive upswing in EBITDA – one year after the appointment of CEO Nigel Oddy.

At the start of FY 2023/24, American Golf took action to control costs and improve margin – which contributed to putting the company back into profit with a £4.3m EBITDA – up £5.7m from the previous year.

This allowed American Golf to maintain one third of the golf retail market share.

CEO Nigel Oddy, marking the end of a successful first year at American Golf, said: “There is no doubt that 2023 was challenging for all retailers, including golf retail, as global and national factors impacted consumer spend and confidence.

“We listened to our customers and their feedback has helped inform our strategy for the years ahead. Due to the continued cost of living pressures, customers told us they were reducing their non-essential golf spend last year, but we were able to take action to leverage our core strengths: focusing on data, our own brand products, our omni-channel offering, and our relationship with third parties.

“American Golf has refocused on core retail, including our 88 nationwide stores, to put us in a strong position for FY 2024/25, with exciting plans for this year and onwards. We have a vision to become the ultimate one-stop destination for everything a golfer requires.”

Warrington-based American Golf introduced new services in FY 2023/24 including personalised golf products and gifts through the ‘My American Golf’ personalisation service, golf insurance with exclusive offers for American Golf Club Card members; and a free Winter Game Review to keep golfers engaged, practising and connected with the game during the winter months.

Using customer insight, a series of targeted campaigns ran over the year to reward core, loyal customers and engage with lapsed customers. This delivered record numbers of reactivated customers, up 19 per cent against the previous year, and retention rate returned to a pre-Covid average.

The implementation of the new strategy saw sales increase by seven per cent in Q4 2023 vs Q4 2022. The online sales business also grew by more than four per cent for the full year.

This performance is in line with American Golf’s growth target of £8m+ EBITDA over the next three years.

Nigel said: “We expect the golf market to continue to be challenging – however we’re optimistic that we can continue to increase American Golf’s share of that market by focusing on our core strengths. Our reset has put us in a strong position as we make ambitious plans for the future of the business.

“We believe in a truly omnichannel business to best connect with our customers – providing flexibility and convenience for a seamless shopping experience. We look forward to rolling out our new app and web experience, along with refurbishments across our existing estate and the opening of new stores in the next few months.”

Introducing Ibanista Savvy Currency Solutions For The French Property Market

Ibanista, a specialist Anglo-French content-creation-led currency broker, announces its official launch. The business offers competitive and secure international payments for private clients and ex-pats navigating the complexities of the French property market.

Co-founded by entrepreneurs Benjamin Small and Maxime Guibert, Ibanista is headquartered in London UK. The business emerged from the fusion of Ben’s and Maxime’s networks in France – transforming the pair’s former rivalry into a strategic partnership. Recognising the overlap in their key clientele, and a shared ethos towards exceptional customer service, they opted to unite capabilities, addressing the inefficiencies and user-hostile experiences that are all too common among leading brokerage firms.

Benjamin distinguishes himself in catering to the needs of the English-speaking expats in France, while Maxime’s tenure at a corporate brokerage allows him to extend sophisticated currency management solutions, traditionally the preserve of professionals, to private high-net-worth individuals. This joint approach has driven the business to secure a foothold within the luxury client segment, positioning Ibanista as a pioneer in French wealth management tools for non-resident clients – a service that remains a rarity in a market flooded with currency brokers.

Commenting on the launch; Benjamin Small, Co-Founder says “Ibanista was a long time coming for me, addressing the hugely ignored needs of the expatriate community. Despite the challenges of entrepreneurship – the joy of assisting remarkable individuals on their unique adventures has made the journey worthwhile. Redefining financial services for expatriates is an intricate and sizeable mission. We are committed to providing seamless and secure solutions tailored to meet the distinct needs of expats globally.”

Maxime Guibert, Co-Founder adds “The flexibility provided by Ibanista enables us to handpick partners and tailor our services specifically for non-resident clients. This is a significant shift from the status quo model where clients have to conform to pre-existing industry offerings. This strategic change is instrumental in drawing in high-profile individuals, including U.S. television celebrities and leading corporate executives.”

The business collaborates with fintech firms located in the UK and France, all of which are regulated by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).  Ibanista ensures its clients have access to competitive wholesale exchange rates while also providing a safeguard against fluctuations in currency.

In addition, Ibanista offers comprehensive care packages that streamline the relocation process, simplifying tasks such as bank account openings, utility service setups, and securing telecommunications contracts.

A new governing body has been selected from a community of 600,000 freelancers registered on Malt’s platform and gives a voice and active role to its international community of freelancers. Members of this committee have completed over 500 assignments in eight categories of business expertise, such as tech, marketing, design, and strategy consulting.

Dr Gary Crotaz, Executive Coach and host of The Unlock Moment podcast, added: “The best businesses stay closely connected to the voice of their customer, and Malt is no different. Check Point Software Technologies Achieves Highest Ranking in Miercom Next Generation Firewall Benchmark Report

Check Point Software, a leading provider of cybersecurity solutions globally, today announced that its Check Point Quantum Cyber Security Platform achieved a near perfect score with a 99.7% malware block rate and 99.9% phishing prevention rate in Miercom’s Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) Security Benchmark 2023 report. The average malware block rate for tested competitors was 54.1%. Miercom, a leading independent network and security testing organization, put the industry’s top four firewalls through a series of intense malware and phishing prevention tests to rate the security efficacy of each product.

The first 24 hours of a malware campaign are the most critical. Preventing an attack at this point can immediately stop widespread damage. A security system with a higher block rate during the first day of discovery means an organization will spend less resources and energy responding to and remediating infected servers and endpoints. Check Point achieved the highest position across all key firewall tests against competitors Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, and Cisco. When put through the Zero+1 Day* Malware Test, Check Point prevented over 99.7% of new malware downloads from a large set of files and file types, surpassing all other tested vendors’ solutions.

“Miercom conducted rigorous testing to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each enterprise firewall. It is apparent that some key competitor solutions have significant gaps in their ability to prevent malware, even after the malware was known to the industry for at least three days. In some cases, they did not block the malware that they detected.” Eyal Manor, VP of Product Management at Check Point Software said. “The report validates the effectiveness of our prevention-first, collaborative approach to Cyber Security. Check Point Quantum Cyber Security Platform Titan solution and its position in the market, revolutionizes threat prevention and security management.”

Check Point Software’s performance in the competitive test earned Check Point Quantum Next-Gen Firewall Miercom’s Certified Secure Award. This is Miercom’s highest award for achievement in competitive, hands-on testing.

“Based on our test findings and observations, we can see that Check Point Quantum excels in all the security efficacy testing categories. Check Point Quantum Next-Gen Firewall was superior in advanced threat prevention and offers the best protection against the latest generation of cyberattacks including Zero+1 Day Malware Malware based on recent competitive testing,” said Rob Smithers, CEO at Miercom. “The solution demonstrated the highest detection and prevention efficacy against a blend of malicious samples, indicating well-rounded protection from multiple attack vectors. As a result, we proudly award Check Point with the Miercom Certified Secure certification in recognition of their superior competitive performance and exceptional value.”
Other Check Point highlights from the report include:

• Best Block Rate at 99.7%: In the Zero+1 Day Malware Prevent (First to Block) Results Check Point led with a 99.7% prevention rate while competitors were as low as 43%.
• Lowest False Positive Rate at 0.13%: In False Positive Malware Detection Tests, where content is falsely reported as malicious, Check Point had the highest accuracy versus competitors that were up to 2 times lower.
• Top phishing prevention at 99.9% with the lowest miss rate at .01%: In Phishing Prevention Tests, Check Point led with the lowest miss rate of 1 per 1,000. Tested competitors miss rate were over 10 times higher, with some missing as many as 720 per 1000 phishing emails.

Check Point Research has determined that the volume of global cyberattacks increased by 38% in 2022 compared to 2021. This is due to a combination of geopolitical unrest with the Russo-Ukrainian war, the increased exploitation of legitimate tools by cybercriminals and the widening cyber skills-gap leaving organizations more vulnerable. Enterprise Firewalls with advanced threat prevention offer the best protection against the latest generation of cyberattacks.

Revealed: The best cities in the UK for job opportunities

New research has revealed which major UK cities have the best job opportunities for the people living and working within them.

HR software provider Ciphr examined 50 locations with city status, comparing multiple factors such as their average earnings, recent salary growth, employment rate changes, unemployment rate, number of job listings, and the number of businesses to identify the top 15 cities that offer the best employment opportunities for job hunters and those considering a change of career.

Life satisfaction and happiness scores, as well as housing affordability – to reflect the local population’s general level of wellbeing and the city’s cost of living – were also included as key indicators in determining the result.

The cities ranked the highest overall for job opportunities are Milton Keynes, Oxford, York, St Albans, and Norwich.

Milton Keynes, in Buckinghamshire, scored consistently well across multiple criteria, having a high average median wage of £38,613 (the county’s average full-time salary is 17% above the UK average of £33,000, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics), and a significant 9.4% salary growth over the last 12 months (the UK average is 5.7%). The city also has a relatively low unemployment rate of 2.8%, compared to the UK average of 3.7%.

The number of businesses based in Milton Keynes (with over 10 employees) is around 74.3 per 10,000 working-age adults, and the number of job listings on Indeed currently stands at 201 per 10,000 working-age adults (the UK averages are 68 and 183 per 10,000 respectively). The city is less competitive in terms of housing affordability though, as typical homes cost an average of 9.1 times earnings and the average rental property costs around 32% of gross pay.

Oxford, which took second place on the list, enjoyed the biggest employment rate growth of all 50 cities, recording a 16.4% increase since 2021. It ranks third for life satisfaction and happiness, and has the fifth-highest average salary at £36,692. While York, in third place, has the second-lowest unemployment rate at 2.2%, and a high number of job listings on Indeed, with around 229 postings per 10,000 working-age people.

Based on Ciphr’s study, the top 15 UK cities for job opportunities are:

1 Milton Keynes (#1 for job opportunities)
2 Oxford (#1 for employment rate growth and happiness)
3 York
4 St Albans (#1 for highest average salary and lowest unemployment rate)
5 Norwich
6 Cambridge (#1 for job listings per person)
7 Colchester (#1 for salary growth)
8 Aberdeen
9 Bristol
10 Coventry
11 Leeds
12 Canterbury (#1 for life satisfaction)
13 Gloucester
14 Doncaster (#1 for housing affordability)
15 Wrexham

Top paying cities

For workers looking for the highest earnings potential in 2023, then St Albans may be a good choice – as its average median full-time salary is 41% above the UK average at £46,551. The next highest-paying city is London, with an average salary of £39,391, followed by Cambridge, Milton Keynes, and Oxford.

When it comes to the best cities for inflation-beating salary growth, however, then the top five reads very differently. Colchester and Chichester take the top two spots, with 12.9% and 12.1% growth since 2021 respectively, followed by Wrexham (11.5%), Salford (11.2%), and Portsmouth (10.7%). Notably, the average salaries in these cities all hover around the UK average of £33,000.

Best cities for job hunters

For those job hunting right now, there are more open vacancies listed on Indeed per person in Cambridge, Exeter, and Bristol than for any other cities in the study. Analysis of data from Indeed, suggests that there are currently around 396 job postings in Cambridge per 10,000 working-age people, 373 in Exeter, and 326 in Bristol (the UK average is 183).

After Cambridge, Exeter and Bristol, the other UK cities that rank highest for job vacancies include Manchester (with 318 listings per 10,000 working-age people), Oxford (289), Norwich (286), Nottingham (272), Gloucester (259), Preston (247) and York (229).

Cities with the most employers

Business density – the number of businesses per capita – is another leading indicator of strong local economic activity, as it usually means that there are more employers (and more opportunities for employment) in the area. According to Ciphr’s research, Winchester has the highest density of businesses at 168.1, which means that there are over 168 employers (with over 10 employees) for every 10,000 working-age residents (if micro-enterprises with over five employees are included too, that figure rises to 296 per 10,000).

Chichester has the next highest number of businesses at 93.9 per 10,000, followed by Belfast (83.7), London (81.6), and St Albans (81.1). The UK average is 68 per 10,000.

Ciphr ranked 50 of the UK’s largest cities (in terms of total population size) across nine weighted metrics – employment rate growth, unemployment rate, business density, job listings, average salary, salary growth, life satisfaction and happiness, rental affordability, and home ownership affordability – to determine the best UK cities for job opportunities.
