Insurance broker celebrates 30th anniversary with new HQ and staff after trebling client base

AN insurance broker is celebrating its 30th anniversary with continued growth and investment.

Credent Commercial Insurance experienced a post-pandemic boom which included a rise in turnover, recruitment and the opening of new headquarters in St Asaph.

Managing Director Niel Jones, from Hawarden, says the company has expanded its client base in the UK.

Formerly head of insurance for the sports and entertainment divisions of a global broking specialist, the dad-of-three, married to Linda, is focused on strengthening partnerships in Wales and beyond, with integrity and transparency at the core of his business ethos.

As he himself marks 25 years in the sector, Niel said: “We have grown in every way – our client base and the size of the team have trebled, and now we have a bigger office and more advanced technology – but we have done so organically.

“By being very client-focused and transparent in all our dealings, which this industry is not traditionally renowned for, we have retained our reputation while exploring new areas, something we plan to do more of in the years ahead.”

He added: “We have invested in our staff, creating capacity to grow while maintaining a high-quality level of service, remaining proactive with clients and taking them along on the journey so they are aware of the environment we operate in, and the challenges we face.

“That kind of honesty and clear communication mean they know exactly what the situation is, and how hard we are working to ensure they get the best outcome.”

Formerly Rhos Insurance, Credent is now the largest Welsh-owned independent insurance broker in North Wales and became a limited company in 1994, under the ownership of Gordan and Susan Crabb.

While the company represents organisations all over the world, Niel says these shores remain a top priority for their workforce, which includes new hires Lowri Davies, Izzy Hewitt and Greg Laurie.

“It is only in the last few years we have done much more nationally while focusing on this region, which as someone who grew up in North Wales is heartening,” he said.

“People still want that face-to-face interaction and a trusting relationship, a factor which has been undervalued. The pandemic had a lot to do with a reversal of that trend, we had probably not appreciated how important it was to deal with someone in person.”

Niel added: “We are three times the size we were when I bought the company in 2016, which on reflection is down to hard work and trying to do the right thing by clients.

“There is no big secret or magic formula, or even a long-term strategic plan; it’s good, old-fashioned support, advice and guidance, which customers need when they are in a difficult situation and concerned about a claim being settled fairly by insurers.

“Fundamentally, we give advice on risk and negotiate to secure the best result for clients, to get the most cost-effective results for them.”

And being on their doorstep is another USP, says Niel.

“It’s a cyclical market, with rates increasing – certainly since Brexit and Covid due to restriction on trade, delays, wage inflation and more – which all impacts on premiums, so it’s vital to understand who and what you’re dealing with,” he said.

“That’s when being independent and local is attractive to clients, we can respond and present risk having been on the ground and use our experience to resolve issues in person, rather than it being dealt with offshore by a multi-national organisation that never steps foot in the door.”

He added: “There is no one-size-fits-all solution, we tailor our services for the client, not for us, and by fostering a relationship know what makes them tick.

“The insurance sector lets itself down by concentrating on its contractual position rather than its moral position and I believe it’s our place to counter that.

“We are dealing with people, and we really believe in what we do – the results speak for themselves.”

Leading names in sales, marketing and comms unite to launch experts platform for business

PROMINENT names in sales, marketing and communications have joined forces to launch a new online membership that offers small businesses access to expert training and advice.

My Expert Team (MET) launches today (Weds), a virtual platform focused on supporting SMEs and small businesses in North Wales and the North West.

Founded by Dawn Roberts, Managing Director of Outperform Training and Coaching, the ‘Netflix-style’ monthly subscription gives users unlimited access to hours of content on a wide range of topics.

Members can access masterclasses delivered by small business experts, attend live networking events, interactive panel discussions and Q&A sessions, and capitalise on services tailored to their requirements and priorities.

There is also a pay-as-you-go option and a monthly package to choose from.

Joining her are Caroline Sanger-Davies, Director and Principal Consultant at Experience Marketing in Hawarden, and Martin Williams, Director of Radar PR, which has offices in St Asaph and Rhyl.

Having led sales teams and delivered training to thousands of people in the private and public sectors across the UK for more than 20 years, Dawn says MET will give members the opportunity to grow their reputations and customer bases while meeting new people and having key information and advice at their fingertips.

“For many organisations, hiring someone to come to their workplace and carry out this kind of training would prove expensive, and, given the economic challenges we are all facing, difficult to justify – My Expert Team is a solution to that problem,” said Dawn, from Prestatyn.

“The driving force behind this is giving people access to advice they might not otherwise be able to afford, smaller companies, start-ups, entrepreneurs, and sole traders who are often unsure what steps to take to achieve success.

“By that we don’t just mean financially, but in terms of growing, providing better customer service, sharing their story, communicating with each other, and building networks.

“We will be adding further topics – finance, HR, accounting, recruitment, AI, web design, photography and videography, event management and everything in between – and want to make this a valuable, end-to-end experience for everyone.”

She added: “Having Caroline and Martin as part of the team is fantastic as they have so much experience in the worlds of marketing, public relations, journalism, social media, and communications.

“Every business is unique, so the support they need must be unique too, without unrealistic targets and complicated processes.

“The feedback we’ve had has been so positive, more than 50 members have already signed up and we expect that to rise in the days and weeks ahead, with more experts joining as well.”

At just £29 a month, the MET subscription costs less than £1 a day over the course of the year.

Martin believes the membership will grow to become a crucial source of information and inspiration for companies across the region and said: “We have all spent hours in a room with no windows receiving training that could have been delivered in minutes, a waste of time and resources for the employee and employer, and that’s before travel and subsequent costs.

“This is the perfect way for businesses to access resources that will allow people to learn from the workplace or even at home when it suits them.

“And as a member there are many other facets to this, including events and live sessions which will feature members and experts from across different sectors – I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Caroline added: “MET is such a simple concept, it does not come with a huge price tag and as every business is unique, the range of experts and content is varied so there will be something for everyone.

“As well as online masterclasses and videos we will be hosting live events in person as well on a regular basis, which will bring people together to share their stories, learn from each other and let us know what training they want, and need.

“We are excited to see how this develops, it could be a game-changer for how we access experts in this part of the world and beyond.”

Hospitality consultant sets table for expansion and TV appearance after helping clients bounce back from pandemic

A LEADING hospitality consultant and mentor who served up success for businesses in the pandemic has set the table for expansion.

Following more than 15 years in the sector, Laura Anne Harvey launched her company – Laura Anne Hospitality Consultant Ltd – full time in the autumn.

She got off to a flying start, garnering clients across the UK and was even nominated in the Micro Business of the Year category at the 2023 FSB Wales Awards.

A coach and mentor with the Greater Manchester Leadership Hive, supporting entrepreneurs and start-ups with free guidance and advice, Laura is focused on helping firms in the sector bounce back from the challenges of Covid-19 to reach even greater heights.

Originally from Devon and now living in Hawarden, she is targeting new customers in North Wales having won contracts with venues nationwide, including Pendergast’s Steakhouse in Warrington, Pasta Cosa in Liverpool, and Wokingham’s Salty Olive.

“I’m working with cafes, hotels, bars and restaurants all over the country but not too many here on my doorstep,” said Laura, who is supported by partner Liam.

“There are many great hospitality businesses in North Wales doing incredible things, and people who are looking to start their own venture, which is where I can help.

“Despite the obstacles and issues around the Coronavirus, rising costs, and other factors, I’m seeing a lot of businesses that are enjoying a period of growth, which is heartening given the current economic climate.”

Laura added: “I think a lot of people are still uncertain as to how a consultant can help – they envision a Gordon Ramsay type scenario where I turn up and point out what’s wrong – but that’s certainly not the case.

“It’s more of a partnership, where we look at things strategically, take a step back and identify how best to be successful going forward, not just financially but in terms of efficiency, the environment and technology.

“For example, during the pandemic a lot of restaurants and cafes felt their food quality was too good to consider offering a takeaway or delivery service, and now for many of them it’s their main source of revenue.

“Having that coaching and mentoring support has proven invaluable to them, but also from a personal perspective there is no greater feeling for me professionally than seeing someone do well.”

A former Operations and Marketing Director with an international hospitality group, Laura fell in love with the industry from a young age.

Ahead of a hospitality TV series to be aired in the coming months, fronted by a prominent celebrity chef, the future is looking very bright for her.

“I want to be the go-to person for marketing, operations and business development in the food and drink arena, that’s my aim and I’m already on my way,” she said.

“It’s a sector hit hard in past years which has shown amazing resilience, driven by innovation and bright ideas, and my aim is to be at the heart of that, in North Wales and beyond.”

Laura added: “Every customer is different but for all of them I can help by offering a wide range of business coaching and consultancy services to business plans and operations manual writing.

“And it’s important I lead by example; I don’t just step in and tell them what they need, I help them deliver it. For one restaurant client I found the property, negotiated the lease, and managed the fitting-out, marketing and launch event. It’s the end-to-end experience.

“That’s what will help me to stand out as my business – and the industry – move forward with confidence and passion, supporting the economy, independent producers and the many established and upcoming hospitality businesses achieving amazing things across the country.”
