Miconex launches Christmas ‘What’s Your Perfect Gift’ campaign to encourage local shopping and minimise waste

Fintech Miconex has launched a ‘What’s Your Perfect Gift’ quiz as its 2021 Christmas campaign as part of ongoing efforts to encourage people to shop local. The Christmas quiz offers players the chance to win a £100 Town & City Gift Card for their choice of over 70 local gift card programmes in the UK and Ireland.

The ‘What’s Your Perfect Gift’ quiz helps users to figure out which present they would most like to receive for Christmas by answering five festive questions, including their favourite Christmas movie, favourite holiday food, and the present they asked Santa for as a child.

Answers to the quiz questions reveal the ideal present to suit the player’s personality in one of six possible categories; food and drink, shopping, leisure and attractions, health and beauty, services and accommodation. Each category represents a type of business where consumers can spend their local Town & City Gift Card. Players can then share their ideal present with friends and family.

“The concept of the ‘What’s Your Perfect Gift’ Christmas quiz is to encourage people to think locally with their Christmas shopping, supporting local towns and cities, whilst also making sure they get a present they’d really like and can make use of,” said managing director of Miconex Colin Munro.

“Gift Card and Voucher Association data found that 1 in 5 Christmas gifts end up in landfill with Brits receiving an average of two unwanted Christmas gifts each year. 50% of Town & City Gift Card programmes have cards made from paper rather than plastic, so offer a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic gift cards, and we’re working hard to take that to 100%- including the card and packaging. Town & City Gift Cards can also be spent on experiences as well as products, and provide essential support for many types of businesses.”

A GCVA/GlobalData survey of 2000 shoppers from October 2021 also suggests that the majority of shoppers, 61.6%, are planning to undertake their Christmas shopping at a similar time of year, with 33.3% suggesting they will shop earlier and 5.1% planning to do their Christmas shopping later. The desire to shop local remains prevalent with 32.3% of consumers buying a gift card in November 2021 doing so to support local businesses.

Multi store gift cards, like Town & City Gift Cards, also increased in popularity to 42.8% of gift card purchases in November 2021, the highest level since GlobalData began tracking and almost overtaking single retailer gift cards (48.4%).

Town & City Gift Cards are local gift cards which can be spent with retail, hospitality, leisure and services in a particular town or city, keeping money locked into the local economy and making local shopping easy. Around £4.6 million is predicted to be injected into communities in 2021 through sales of Town & City Gift Cards.

New Town & City Gift Card programmes launched in 2021 in Swansea, Bishop’s Stortford, Hereford, Colchester, Eastleigh, Middlesbrough and Minehead, with new launches in November and December 2021 in Mid Ulster and High Street Ashbourne, and new digital and physical gift cards for Ipswich, Worthing, Bradford and Wimbledon.

Miconex is also running a ‘Golden Gift Card’ competition with over £1000 in Town & City Gift Cards given away as prizes. Every customer ordering a gift card through the Town & City Gift Cards website until the 31st of December will be entered into the Golden Gift Card prize draws. The tenth and final draw will take place on Friday 31st December, for a £500 Town & City Gift Card.
