Unstoppable Electric – Why the EV Market Is Predicted to Boom in the UK – and why smart investors will be looking for opportunities

The UK electric vehicle (EV) market has seen significant growth in recent years, with a marked increase in the number of electric cars and vans on the roads.

As of the end of January 2024, there are approximately 1,000,000 fully electric cars and around 600,000 plug-in hybrids in the UK. In 2023, there was an 18% growth in the registration of battery-electric cars compared to the previous year, and the total number of plug-in cars (battery-electric and plug-in hybrids) registered showed a 41% increase from 2022.

Strong UK Position

Overall, the UK’s position in the global EV market is strong, with the country ranked as the 5th best-prepared nation for the EV transition out of the world’s top 20 markets. This ranking reflects the UK’s robust demand for new EVs, which is encouraging more consumers and businesses to adopt electric vehicles.

New laws requiring car and van makers to sell a minimum percentage of zero-emission vehicles have come into force in Britain on 3 January 2024.

The Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate stipulates that electric vehicles (EVs) must constitute 22% of new car sales in 2024, increasing to 28% in 2025, reaching 52% in 2028, and a substantial 80% being purely electric by 2030. Moreover, by the year 2035, the mandate mandates that 100% of newly sold vehicles must be emission-free.

The transition to electric vehicles is well underway, and regulations have been implemented to facilitate this shift.

Rising and Rising EV Sales

The EV sales in the UK made up over half of the vehicle sales during the first quarter of 2023, demonstrating the increasing preference for electric and hybrid vehicles over traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

The growth in the UK EV market is part of a global trend towards electric mobility, with significant advancements in technology and supportive government policies fuelling the market’s expansion.

In terms of electric vans, there has been a notable increase in registrations, with more than 56,000 electric vans in the UK as of January 2024. The number of electric vans sold in the UK saw a significant uptick last year, thanks in part to the increased availability of new models, expanding the choices available to consumers.

The need for more chargers

A transformative shift is occurring in how we power our vehicles. Charging an electric vehicle introduces a new paradigm where the “petrol station” is essentially a car park or driveway.

The opportunities for growth of EV sales are clear – however, there are challenges that need to be addressed to sustain this growth, not least the rapid deployment of charging infrastructure to meet demand – which is currently far short of what is needed already, both at home and on the road.

Think about where you fuel your car currently – and then think about solutions for EVs that focus only on Motorway Service Stations.  The point is, nobody wants to drive too far to top up – the companies that get charging right could benefit from lots of repeat business too.

The opportunity to make money in the sector is likely to be there for the taking, and we can expect to see massive opportunities both for investors who back it and for retailers, restaurants and consumer outlets that provide it for their customers.

New charging companies like Go Zero are already hitting the market strong, with their ‘Go Zero’ models for home and local businesses proving popular, delivering both a healthy return for investors and a high degree of consumer satisfaction.

The market for at-home charging is naturally in demand, but so is the need for charging on the go – and that’s where canny local businesses can tap into it.  Adding charging to your restaurant, gym or hotel car park will be appreciated by locals – but it also gives your customers a new reason to visit again.  Repeat business at it’s best, it’s a win/win.  Likewise, for employers who are struggling to find the right talent, getting EV charging at work will become a valuable benefit and a notable point of difference in an increasingly competitive market.

The demand for EV charging infrastructure is already there and the whole EV market depends on it.  It’s a great opportunity, the right time and the right product.  The only question is, will your business be part of the success story?

Oldest surviving YFC couple recall happy days farming in Devon

Devon born and raised Ivan and Rosemary Goff, who now live in Shropshire, are believed to be England’s oldest surviving couple associated with the Young Farmers’ Club movement.

The couple, who live in supported accommodation in Much Wenlock, moved to Shropshire following the pandemic to be closer to their son, Andrew, who lives near Shrewsbury.

Andrew has recorded a video interview with his parents about their recollections of their days as YFC members.

Ivan, 96 and Rosemary, 90, are natives of the Culm Valley, near Tiverton. Ivan was invited to join Culm Valley YFC in 1946 and his wife followed suit a year later, at the age of 13.

The first YFC opened in 1921 in Hemyock, Devon, where the United Dairies milk factory set children of the area’s milk producers the task of calf rearing, with competitions and prizes for those achieving the highest standards.

Over the next decade more clubs opened to provide agricultural education, with a focus on growing crops, calves, pigs, poultry, bees and gardens.

One of Ivan’s proudest memories is winning the YFC ploughing competition at the age of 22 but he was outshone by Rosemary when it came to winning silverware.

She won a host of competitions for her livestock and was allowed to keep the cup for Best Young Farmer after winning it for three years on the trot. At one point, the couple owned a collection of around 20 cups.

Rosemary recalls her favourite prizewinning calf, which she named Betty, with great fondness. She donated one of her collection, named the Flay Cup in honour of her maiden name, to Honiton Agricultural Show and it’s still awarded annually to the best calf rearer.

During the video interview, the couple both said they had enjoyed the social aspect of being YFC members, as well as the competitions. They encouraged today’s young farmers to enjoy their time in the YFC and to spend wisely with an eye to the future

They also both praised the YFC for its charity fundraising and for moving with the times.

During their younger days, Ivan and Rosemary were well known for their dancing, joining five other couples in travelling to dances around their home area.

Today, despite Ivan’s failing health, the couple are still inseparable, spending most days together at Lady Forester Nursing Home in Much Wenlock.

Genesis Biosciences joins consortium to tackle antimicrobial resistance

Genesis Biosciences has joined the COMBAT AMR consortium which aims to understand and control the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance in complex drain biofilms.

Under the leadership of Professor Jean-Yves Maillard of Cardiff University, Genesis Biosciences will collaborate with the university and other European educational institutions on the research project.

Antimicrobial resistance is a significant global challenge and is listed on the UK government’s National Risk Register as a chronic risk that poses continuous challenges. The government’s vision is for antimicrobial resistance to be contained and controlled by 2040 and it is publishing five-year national action plans to achieve this.

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when organisms that cause disease evolve and are no longer affected by antimicrobials including antibiotics, antifungal and antiviral medicines. It is a natural phenomenon but is rapidly accelerating due to factors including misuse or overuse of antimicrobials in humans and animals, environmental contamination and poor infection control practices.

Biofilms, communities of microorganisms living on surfaces, are the most common mode of bacterial growth and harbour pathogens, particularly antimicrobial and multidrug resistant pathogens. Due to their ubiquitous nature, biofilms are recognised as a major cause of antimicrobial resistance.

The COMBAT AMR consortium is studying drain biofilms from farms, healthcare settings and homes to understand the complexity of biofilms in different environments and the persistence of antimicrobial genes and multidrug resistant organisms within those biofilms.

The consortium is using a new multi-species biofilm model based on research by Dr Kate Ledwoch, Laboratory Manager at Genesis Biosciences, and fellow scientists which was published in the Journal of Hospital Infection in 2020.

The innovative model will be used during the project to measure the efficacy of several interventions to control the biofilms, explore the phenotypic characterisations of the key pathogens and establish an impact intervention to control antimicrobial resistant organisms on their resistance genes within the biofilms.

Dr Emma Saunders, General Manager at Genesis Biosciences, said: “Antimicrobial resistance is a threat to both human and animal health, impacting the ability to treat infections and ensure food security. As biofilms act as a reservoir for harmful, resistant pathogens, it is important to improve our understanding of antimicrobial genes and the impact of disinfection on complex biofilms.

“We are looking forward to working with Cardiff University and the other members of the consortium to help tackle this global challenge.”

Apprenticeships integral to growth of South Wales childcare provider

The Welsh Government’s apprenticeship programme has been integral to the successful growth of Little Inspirations, a multi-award-winning South Wales childcare provider.

Since forming 20 years ago, the Pontyclun-based company has grown from one to nine settings and now has a workforce of 123. Childcare facilities are provided for children aged from six weeks to 12 years and more than 400 families daily across Rhondda Cynon Taff, Vale of Glamorgan, Newport and Merthyr Tydfil.

The company currently has 20 apprentices, having employed 39 over the past 17 years and staff retention is well above the industry average. Apprenticeships make employees feel valued and provide career progression pathways.

Little Inspirations has now been shortlisted for the prestigious Apprenticeship Awards Cymru 2024 as a Medium Employer of the Year finalist.

Which apps for Irish players are really standing apart in the casino sphere in 2024?

More people than ever are now playing online casino games on their mobile devices, so we figured we would take the time to walk you through the best casino apps for Irish players. We’ve got a few to cover, so let’s jump right on in!

Casumo Casino

Casumo Casino is probably the largest online casino on this list, which means they have a ton of money to invest in developing a mobile casino app. And boy does that show! Almost every one of the thousands of games you can find on Casumo Casino can be played through the mobile app. You can even chat with live customer support there.

One of the coolest things about Casumo Casino is their range of live casino games which ‒ you guessed it ‒ can also be played on the go. Note, though, that you’ll probably need a decent internet connection if you really want to get the most from the live games.

On top of this, you’ll have hundreds of slot machines to choose from. If you like to dabble in sports betting every so often, you’ll also be pleased to know that your account will give you access to the sports betting side of the app too.

The only downside to Casumo Casino is that some of the withdrawals can be a little bit slow. Whereas PayPal (which we highly recommend) will in most cases be an instant withdrawal, other payment methods can take 2-5 working days.

Sign up for Casumo Casino today and you can get a 100% matched deposit bonus of up to €300, and 50 bonus spins. You never know, you could win and fund your bets for the Cheltenham Festival 2024!

LeoVegas

LeoVegas is another top online casino that has invested heavily in its app. It is probably one of the best-known online casinos in Ireland, due to their heavy advertising, so their mobile app is definitely one of the best apps for Irish players.

When you register, you can get up to €1,000 in free bonus cash (depending on how much you deposit), plus 200 free spins on one of the top slot machines. One of the great things about the slot-machines bonus is that the wagering requirements are just 25x, which means there is a good chance that you can withdraw some of your winnings. The standard bonus cash wagering requirement is 40x, which is still low.

There are tons and tons of games to play at LeoVegas casino, though it’s the slot machines that are the main attraction ‒ there are almost 4,000 to choose from! And they include games from all the top developers. You’ll also get to enjoy multiple jackpot slots where you could potentially win hundreds of thousands (sometimes millions) of Euros.

888Casino

We have another top online casino for slot machines here. It certainly has one of the best bonuses for slot machine players. When you register, you can get 88 free spins, absolutely no questions asked (well, you need to provide your personal information when you sign up, but other than that, nothing). This means that 888Casino is one of the few online casinos in Ireland offering a no-deposit bonus.

If you do decide to deposit some cash into your account, then you can enjoy an initial matched deposit of 100%, with €140 up for grabs. The wagering requirement for this is among the lowest in Ireland, with a 30x wagering requirement.

Because 888Casino is large enough, they often work with a variety of casino game developers, which means that you can find online casino games at 888Casino that you can’t find anywhere else. This includes a variety of lotteries, slot machines, and keno.

The only downside is that the design of the app perhaps isn’t the best. The gameplay is fantastic, though, which is why it is on this list. The app just needs a bit more of a spruce-up to elevate it to one of the top apps for Irish players. And with app technology advancing rapidly, a top-notch app should be something they can roll out fairly quickly in order to keep up with their rivals.

Novibet Casino

In terms of game selection, Novibet Casino is one of the smallest online casinos on this list, but don’t let that put you off. You know what they say about quality over quantity, and Novibet has quality games. While the app does have a variety of slot machines, a good chunk of the focus is on instant-play games, bingo, and keno. You can also bet on some sports if you wish.

Register for the site today and you can receive 150 free spins, plus up to €150 in bonus cash.

10Bet Casino

Your first deposit at 10Bet Casino will be matched 50%, up to a total of €150. You’ll get 50 free spins on top of this. You’ll need to deposit a minimum of €15 to access the offer, which makes it one of the easiest-to-access casino bonuses in Ireland (excluding the no-deposit bonuses, of course).

There are 1,700 games at 10Bet Casino. Most are slot machines, but you also have a wealth of table games, instant-win games, live-dealer games, and more. You won’t get bored here.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a top online casino in Ireland, there’s no shortage of options. More sites than ever now have a mobile option, which means that you can download the app and gamble wherever you want. It is unlikely that every single game at an online casino will be available for mobile gambling (you can thank the game developers for that), but most should be, meaning you can dive into your favourite games right away.

FAQs

Are Mobile Casinos Legal in Ireland?

Since 2015, as long as an online casino is licensed to operate in Ireland, it is 100% legal to run a mobile casino app, and it is legal to gamble there too (assuming you’re an adult).

Can All Casino Games Be Played on Mobile Devices?

Unfortunately, no. Some games have been designed in Macromedia Flash, which means they will only work on your desktop computer. These games are starting to be phased out, though.

What’s the Best App for Online Casinos in Ireland?

There are plenty of apps to check out. We highly recommend both Casumo Casino and LeoVegas.
