In the UK, 6.3 million people experience walking impairment (DfT, 2019- 20). Despite the resulting high demand for mobility scooters, traditional mobility scooters have five times more fatalities per distance travelled than motorbikes. To remove the choice between safety and mobility, the Founders of Supersmith have invented the ‘3Scooter’, with the aim of revolutionising the world of mobility scooters and transforming perceptions about the people who use them.
With its patented stabilisation technology ‘EverLevel’, Supersmith addresses the instability issues of traditional mobility scooters by actively adjusting to the terrain. The design of the 3Scooter also works to dismantle the stigma associated with mobility scooters, by seating riders up to 90% of standing height. The soon-to-launch ‘3Scooter’ model not only looks different from all other mobility scooters but also behaves uniquely, offering unparalleled stability, convenience and comfort.
Supersmith was inspired by its founders, Tom and Emily Morgan, along with Dr Fred Russell-Pavier, and their personal experiences. Tom has seen his sister living with multiple sclerosis and struggling with traditional mobility scooters as they lacked safety and contributed to feelings of social exclusion due to the strong negative stigmas associated with them. This motivated the family trio to transform the user experience of mobility scooters. Their focus is on creating a product that is not only a mobility solution but a gateway to an independent, confident, and connected life.
Leveraging years of expertise in manufacturing, design, cutting-edge innovation, and customer collaboration, Supersmith has now launched the waitlist for their first ‘3Scooter’ model. This product is safer, lighter, and higher, embodying the company’s core proposition: “Expand Your World.”
The 3Scooter was developed with personal experience at its core. Supersmith has incorporated extensive user testing through concept, design, and production to ensure this. Based on the well-known mantra in the disability community, ‘Nothing for us, without us,’ this new model has included users every step of the way.
Tom Morgan, Co-Founder of Supersmith, commented: “This journey is incredibly personal for all of us. Together with my wife Emily and her cousin Fred, we founded Supersmith to make life easier for anyone who finds walking difficult. We’re hoping to empower our community and, through innovation, make the world of micro-mobility accessible for all.”
Key Features of the 3Scooter:
The 3Scooter’s design is user-led and radically different from existing mobility scooters, blending contemporary e-scooter aesthetics with practical functionality to make it safer, more sociable and more empowering. Supersmith has won funding from the Design Age Institute in recognition of this innovation.
- Inside every 3Scooter there is an inbuilt stabilisation system. The patented technology maximises stability and comfort by adjusting to terrain and riding conditions. Unlike passive suspension, the active suspension system continuously adapts, adjusting its rear legs and speed to ensure balance and maintain eye-level at all times. Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, the scooter excels in narrow paths, tight turns, and doorways, handling uneven ground with ease. This advanced technology provides a more stable, intuitive ride, meaning less time focused on obstacles ahead and more time enjoying the ride.
- The 3Scooter folds in around 10 seconds and can be partially folded to be used as a walker for added support during moments of fatigue or difficulty. It is lightweight and compact, with a lifting weight of 15kg. The 3Scooter fits easily into the boot of a Volkswagen Golf (or similar vehicle), and has a battery that can be quickly removed to charge inside.
- The scooter features a small turning circle, made possible with 3 wheels, for easy manoeuvring indoors and outdoors, along with a reverse function for navigating tight spaces such as crowded areas, cafes, and small shops. Users have the option to be seated higher than on a traditional mobility scooter – up to 90% of their standing height, meaning they are no longer, literally or metaphorically, looked over.
