Snip and tuck as students complete stunning centrepiece for Welsh barber

IT was snip and tuck but talented students managed to complete a stunning countertop in time for the opening of a popular Wrexham barbershop.

Learners from Coleg Cambria’s Bersham Road site constructed the wooden piece for Matt and Kat Whitfield, owners of Holdfast Barbers in Ty Pawb, Market Street.

Owen Haycocks, Zoe Booth, Liam Jones, Sam Edwards-Jones, James Lee, and Arran Brearey from the college’s Joinery Level 1 course created the centrepiece, before the final touches were put to it by Painting and Decorating cohort Amber Stanhope and Morgan Sides, supported by tutor Mike Wade.

Lecturer Stuart Kennedy said: “The students did a fantastic job; what they’ve made is top quality and I’m sure will take pride of place in Holdfast’s new premises.

“It was a real team effort and took a lot of skill to complete given all of the intricacies and detail – it looks brilliant so well done again to everyone involved.”

Kat added: “The group from Coleg Cambria did an absolutely brilliant job with this, we are really, really pleased!

“We’ve progressed from a small barber shop into new bigger premises and the new desk gives it that finishing touch. Thank you again, it’s terrific.”

Grand designs by talented art students light up new year property campaign

GRAND designs by talented art students hold the keys to a long-standing partnership with one of the country’s top property agents.

Learners on the Foundation Studies in Art and Design course at Grwp Llandrillo Menai have been working alongside Williams Estates to develop a series of images for their Home is Where the Heart Is campaign.

The cohort from the college’s Rhos-on-Sea site created bespoke posters for an innovative light-up window display that will capture the attention of customers and passers-by at their offices in Holywell, Denbigh, Mold, Rhyl, Ruthin, Prestatyn and Rhuddlan.

It comes as Director Jason Williams and the team again were named Best Lettings Agency in Denbighshire at The British Property Awards for 2021/22, adding to the impressive array of industry customer service awards they won this year.

Jason said: “We’ve had an amazing year and it’s been topped off by the brilliant work of the students at Llandrillo.

“We are always keen to try and support the college and the next generation of artists and designers with real-life, real-time projects that will enhance our marketing and profile while giving them vital experience.

“The end result is a fabulous and eye-catching digital poster using different concepts which will definitely turn heads – we love it and thank them for their amazing efforts.”

This is the sixth consecutive year that Williams Estates has given the Art and Design department a creative brief.

“And every year the absolutely blow us away with what they come up with,” said Jason.

“This Christmas is no different, they’ve outdone themselves once again.”

Lecturer Dewi Owen Hughes added: “I fully support such links with industry as I believe realistic creative work projects greatly enhance the experience and future employability of our Art and Design students.

“Our learners gain so much added-value by working on this brief and they can’t wait to see their creative work being printed and used by Williams Estates in a state-of-the-art LED light-pocket window display.”

Reflecting on their latest awards victory, which came just weeks after they won six titles at the ESTAS – including their ninth Gold for Best Sales Agent in Wales – Jason said: “That is testament to our staff, who – despite the challenges of the pandemic – have gone above and beyond to support our customers and provide outstanding service.

“For that to be recognised with success in two such high-profile industry award ceremonies is a major honour for us.”

Record breaking cohort secures best ever results for Welsh leadership programme

AN ACCLAIMED business and management qualification is celebrating its most successful cohort ever.

More than 1,000 senior managers, owners, and directors from across Wales – and 10% of its 300 top firms – have graduated from the 20Twenty Business Growth Programme over the years.

The latest group to complete the course – all based in Flintshire, Wrexham and north Powys – have the best results in its history; 14 delegates on the CMI (Chartered Management Institute) Level 7 received the highest average results in Wales, including seven distinctions.

Among them was Ian Danby, Head of Biodiversity at the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), who scored the best overall marks in the country.

He said the programme – delivered by Bangor University in collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University – gave him a real confident boost.

“20Twenty was a wholly worthwhile experience,” Ian added.

“I went into it wanting to both confirm the skills I had and to develop new ones in areas of business management where my career to date has had less emphasis. The lecturers on the course were a diverse group of seasoned professionals and I really enjoyed it.”

Those studying for the qualification – which has been held online due to the Coronavirus pandemic – attend masterclasses and workshops with some of the leading names in myriad industries, including former BBC Business Doctor, Dr Paul Thomas, Director and Founder of DNA Definitive.

Various themes and topics are covered, and delegates are focused on developing a Strategic Growth Plan (SGP).

With the programme 80% funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through Welsh Government, it has been lauded by alumni for the long-term impact it has had on their businesses, and the relationships forged among representatives from different sectors.

Learning and Evaluation Manager Greg Parry praised the record-breaking group for their achievement and encouraged other company and social enterprise leaders to sign up for the next cohort, which begins in February.

“I took over this role halfway through this latest programme and had the pleasure of reading the delegates’ Strategic Growth Projects,” he said.

“While their grades are brilliant, the biggest impact will hopefully be developing aspects such as leadership, marketing or change management in their organisations.”

Dr Paul Thomas added: “The programme will connect you to a real sense of self and that of human leadership. It will inspire and challenge you to grow, to become a future-fit leader who can take on the complexities of driving modern organisations – well done to those who have achieved such brilliant results.”

For more information and to sign up for the next 20Twenty Business Growth Programme, email j.whittaker@bangor.ac.uk or visit the website: www.20TwentyBusinessGrowth.com.

NOTES: The 20Twenty Business Growth Programme is the only leadership and management course in Wales to offer an optional progression route from CMI Level 4 to CMI Level 7, including a Postgraduate Certificate, an Executive MBA and Chartered Manager Award. The programme is delivered by Cardiff Metropolitan University in partnership with Bangor University and subsidised by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.

Virtual events to the rescue: Hubilo helps the education sector keep the show on the road

Hubilo Technologies Inc, a world-class leader in hybrid and virtual events management technology, have stepped up to aid the education sector in its bid to avoid more event cancellations.

Events have long been part of the lifeblood of the education sector, and they give attendees the chance to break out of their comfort zone, network, and learn in a new environment. But the Covid-19 pandemic severely impacted the sector’s ability to deliver these valuable learnings in person, and mass cancellations have left students disappointed and institutions under strain.

Fortunately, Hubilo’s virtual events platform has allowed the education sector to adapt to a challenging events landscape. Its intuitive interface, end-to-end customisation options, and sophisticated networking capabilities are helping organisers worldwide drive deep engagement and deliver full events programmes once more.

Chicago Booth, one of the leading business schools of the United States, is one of many prestigious educational institutions using Hubilo to connect after Covid. Having cancelled its annual student-led Booth TechCon in 2020, the organising team did not want to postpone this enterprising conference yet again. Hubilo’s platform guaranteed seamless streaming capabilities for the keynote sessions and interactive panel discussions. Thanks to the many session engagement options – enhanced by a networking arena to facilitate real-time interactions – the long-awaited event was a huge success amongst the 250+ students, alumni, and dignitaries in attendance.

Hubilo was selected as a completely customisable one-stop shop for all the sessions. Yet, for Chicago Booth, the benefits extended well beyond the smooth session-viewing experience. Easy onboarding, 1-1 meeting scheduling options, real-time 1-1 messaging, and round-the-clock support from the Hubilo team all contributed to the successful delivery of a captivating event. Valuable analytics also helped organisers to understand the impact and success of the conference on each individual attendee.

Greg Volm, SVP of Sales and Success at Hubilo, said: “We are delighted that Chicago Booth selected us to host its first virtual conference. Our pioneering all-in-one platform continues to reimagine the events space, and today we are positioned as a catalyst for post-Covid education outreach.”

New master’s programme designed for those who want to excel in sports management careers

A brand new ‘Master in Sport Design and Management’ has been launched at MIP Politecnico di Milano in Italy.

The masters programme will focus on topics around sport infrastructures among places, culture, technology, sustainability, inclusivity, and business.

The innovative programme is designed for young graduates wishing to start their career in the world of sport management, or professionals who want to grow further by developing specialised skills in the design and management of sport infrastructure.

Launched in collaboration with the main Italian sports institutions: CONI, FIGC, Istituto per il Credito Sportivo and Lega Serie A, there is no doubt that those on the course with ambitions to become managers within the sports industry will be propelled on to a path of success.

The culture of sports is essential. Sports today are not only major infrastructure or the monument to high-level competitive events: it’s everything that shapes young people both in terms of character and physically. And managing sports is an extraordinarily complex job. That’s why we designed a Master dedicated to the management of facilities not only from a technical point of view, which is still fundamental, but also from a process perspective – explains Prof. Emilio Faroldi, director of the Master in Sport Design and Management

The Master lasts 12 months and it is delivered both in Italian and in English, and is taught as a mixture of both face-face and online learning.

£1million donation supports North East students to succeed at Durham University

A major scholarships programme to help students from low-income backgrounds in North East England to study at Durham University has received a new donation of £1million.

The Durham Inspired North East Scholarships support exceptional young people from across the region to fulfil their potential at Durham, regardless of their financial means.

Thanks to the scholarships, students can study up to masters degree level with financial assistance.

The £1million donation comes from the Race Family, from Northumberland, who have created a perpetual scholarship in the name of Dr Malcolm and Mrs Patricia Anne Race for four students each year from the North East wishing to study History and Liberal Arts.

Both Malcolm and Anne were first-in-family university attendees and met and studied at Durham in 1959 where they both read Modern History.
Malcolm was, and still is, a member of University College and Anne was at St Mary’s. After a few years away from the area developing their careers they finally settled in Northumberland in 1977 where they raised their three children.

Speaking on behalf of all the family, their son Charles Race said: “The North East of England has given so much to our family, and the benefits we have all gained from a university education inspired us to put this scholarship together.

“We hope that others who may not have the means to progress to Durham are given that opportunity and we can in a very small way repay the region for all it has done for us.”

In total, each year more than 20 students will receive Durham Inspired North East Scholarships of £4,000 a year to study for foundation, undergraduate and masters level qualifications.

Of that £4,000, £1,500 is allocated to supporting students’ wider university experience including internships and careers support to help them build the skills that complement their academic studies.

The Durham Inspired North East Scholarships were established in 2020 with a £2million endowment as part of a landmark £7.5 million donation from Charles Wilson, a Durham graduate and his partner Dr Rowena Olegario, an Oxford University researcher.

That endowment included matched funding from several generous benefactors including the Ruth & Lionel Jacobson Charitable Trust.

Other donors to the scholarships include Edward Knight and Peter Ellis, the latter being a legacy donation made to support students and allocated to this fund as it was in-keeping with the donor’s wishes.

The Durham Inspired North East Scholarships build on our existing scholarships focused on North East England, including the Robert Young Scholarship, the St Nicholas Scholarships and the Brian Cooper Scholarship, and our own Vice-Chancellor’s North East awards.

Katie Harland-Edminson, Deputy Director (Development), Development and Alumni Relations, Durham University, said: “We want to welcome the best and brightest students with the merit and potential to succeed at Durham, regardless of their economic circumstances or their background.

“That’s why we’re delighted and thankful to receive these very generous donations which allow us to continue growing this important scholarship programme to increase opportunities for exceptional young people from the North East so they can benefit from everything that a Durham University education offers.”

The latest donations will also support the wider Durham Inspired Campaign, chaired by Rob Senior, former Chief Executive Officer Worldwide of the major advertising business Saatchi & Saatchi, which seeks to support the next generation of inspiration and leadership through Durham University.

Campaign to eradicate asbestos from Birmingham schools launches on World Teachers’ Day

A hard-hitting campaign to protect teachers and children in Birmingham from the deadly substance asbestos has been launched today on World Teachers’ Day.

In recent years, it’s emerged that more than 80 per cent of Birmingham’s schools could contain the hidden killer asbestos which causes a range of serious conditions, including the cancer mesothelioma.

The UK has the highest mesothelioma death rate for teachers in the world and between 200 and 300 people die here each year after being exposed to asbestos as school children.

Birmingham-based asbestos consultancy Acorn Analytical Services is leading the new campaign which calls for greater awareness about the presence of asbestos in school buildings to ensure the hazardous substance is managed safely or removed.

As part of the campaign, Acorn is offering free asbestos audits to all Birmingham schools and is in talks with the city’s MPs to see if they can help the company to lobby for change at government level.

Before joining Acorn, company director Ian Stone ran ATAC – the UK’s leading association for the asbestos testing and consultancy industry – and lobbied the Government about the presence of asbestos in schools and for better asbestos management in schools.

Ian said: “As part of my campaigning, I met ex-RAF pilot Michael Lees who lost his wife Gina at the age of 51 to mesothelioma. Like hundreds of others, Gina was a teacher, as well as a wife and mother to young children. She’d been exposed to asbestos by simply pinning up schoolwork onto display boards with asbestos fibres in them. To see how this family had been torn apart and children left without a mother really affected me and has driven me on to campaign further.

“Other countries are pledging to eradicate asbestos from their schools completely but things are moving a lot more slowly here. Schools are special places and greater transparency over what asbestos is in our schools is needed. In our experience some schools manage their asbestos well, but others are failing and this will have consequences.

“The high numbers of Birmingham schools which could contain asbestos is hugely worrying so we want to see action taken in our great city first before we roll out our campaign nationwide.”

Asbestos was used heavily by the UK’s construction industry in the second half of the 20th century and as a result any building erected before 2000 could contain asbestos. If asbestos is not managed properly it can release fibres into the air and if inhaled they can cause serious diseases.

Headteachers who are worried about whether asbestos is present in their schools can contact Acorn for a free asbestos audit by calling 0844 818 0895.

Anyone who wants to support the campaign should contact Acorn on birmingham@acornasbestos.co.uk
