Mentoring young students is boosting employee skills and engagement at leading businesses.

It is Learning at Work Week (15th to 21st May), an annual event to foster a culture of learning at work and Career Accelerator, a leading business education company, is highlighting how their mentoring programmes are helping employees from leading businesses to develop new skills, learn about diversity and inclusion and contribute to society.

Career Accelerator works with top companies including Cisco, GoCardless and Pearson to provide mentoring programmes that connect businesses with young students from diverse backgrounds, providing developmental opportunities for their employees and, at the same time, helping prepare these young people for their future careers.

Through Career Accelerator’s Neurodiversity and Disability programme and LGBT+ business mentoring, employees are benefiting from interacting with young people, enabling them to grow both professionally and personally. Businesses benefit too because they are building more diverse future talent pipelines and increasing employee engagement. Research by social platform Neighbourly found that 85% of businesses find volunteering advances talent as part of the learning and development strategy, plus employees who have volunteered with their company are 13% happier than those who have not.

Mayur Gupta, CEO at Career Accelerator said: “Mentoring gives employees a valuable and insightful way to gain new skills and have new experiences, plus give something back to their community by building young people’s confidence and knowledge as they start out in their working lives. Our programmes work with a diverse range of young people including neurodiverse and disabled people, and those from ethnic backgrounds, many of whom are not given the usual chances in life to access and thrive at work.  In Learning at Work week, we encourage other businesses to get involved and offer their employees this unique volunteering opportunity. It’s a fantastic way to improve wellbeing, boost learning and development, plus position the business as a great place to work.”

GoCardless had been working with Career Accelerator for three years through their BEAM and Pride networks, two groups established to increase opportunity for the Black, Ethnic and Asian minority community, and to ensure LGBTQIA+ employees feel represented and empowered to be themselves, respectively. Over this time they have mentored more than 20 students and young people to give them a glimpse of what it’s like to work at a fast-growing tech company.

Hamish Wood, Senior Manager, Customer Success UK&I, said the experience has been invaluable in helping employees develop new skills and experiences. He said: “The Career Accelerator programme has been an enormous success at GoCardless. Our mentors say they’ve had the chance to step out of their comfort zone to gain new perspectives and greater empathy for others, which they’ll take into the future as we continue to hire and build diverse teams. It’s been a real development opportunity for those involved, in addition to a practical way to give back to our community. We would encourage any business to sign up for the Career Accelerator. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Cisco has been working with Career Accelerator for three years on the LGBT+ and Neurodiversity and Disability programme, as well as their schools programme.

Mariia Dryhval, Apprentice at Cisco said: “I was able to help my mentee understand the options available to help them to understand what would be best for them in the near future. Also, I answered their questions as I have been in their position not long ago and I know how difficult it can be to make the ‘right’ choice. I gained new skills and knowledge on how to be an effective mentor. I will also consider mentoring in the future.”

Pearson has also worked with Career Accelerator for two years on the LGBT+ and Neurodiversity and Disability programme.

Havana Abid, SVP Finance & Operations at Pearson said: “As a company dedicated to improving lives through learning this programme gave me a unique opportunity as an employer mentor to work directly with young neurodivergent people. The Career Accelerator programme was a great way to connect with and guide students through a series of mentoring and coaching sessions in a meaningful way, sharing my own experience, helping them better understand and explore the world of work and enriching the learning by turning this into real-life impact for them. The sessions were amazing, fun, and humbling as I got to work with very talented young people starting on their work journeys and through the mentoring helping them create career and work pathways. This programme resonated deeply with me personally, as I am parent of a neurodivergent student as well as professionally, as Pearson is all about helping people realise the life they imagine through learning and work skills. I would recommend any employer out there to get involved in the programme – it was a fantastic and rewarding experience, allowing me to bring what I do every day to life for these learners.”

4 Ways to Set Yourself Up for Academic Success

Every year, thousands of students enrol in universities in countries around the world in pursuit of higher education. For instance, the second country with the most international students in the world is the UK. In fact, according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), there are more than 679,970 international students studying in the UK, making it the intellectual hub of Europe.

Academic success can mean different things to different individuals. Education is designed to help you achieve your personal and professional goals, whether you are interested in a particular subject or want to improve your credentials for advancing your career.

Achieving academic success requires hard work and dedication. It’s a process that involves setting goals, developing strategies to reach those goals, and committing to the process of learning. It involves having a positive outlook, being motivated, and taking responsibility for one’s learning. Additionally, it means having good time management skills, setting realistic expectations, and being able to prioritize tasks.

If you’re unsure of where to start, below we share some tips on how you can build a strong foundation for academic success and excel.

Set Goals

It’s crucial to set clear goals and develop skills and habits that will guide you through your learning. Goals provide direction and motivation, allowing you to focus your efforts on what matters most.

They also help you stay organized and prioritize tasks, so that you can make the most of your time. Furthermore, having clear goals can help reduce stress and anxiety by providing a sense of control over your academic journey. Developing SMART goals is an essential part of any successful academic journey that will keep you motivated and on track.

Get Help

Having a tutor can be a great way to improve your academic performance. Tutors can provide you with personalized support and guidance that can help you understand difficult concepts, develop better study habits, and achieve higher grades.

Private tutoring has become one of the most popular methods for students to improve their knowledge. In-person or online interaction between tutors and students helps in learning the material more quickly. This can help students take charge of their studies and feel more confident in communicating with others.

For instance, if you study in London, you can find excellent tutors who possess a wealth of knowledge and expertise in their respective subjects. Make sure you search for the best private tutors in London, and find one that can match your needs, empower you to overcome challenges, and excel in your studies.

With the help of a tutor, you can learn at your own pace and receive feedback on areas that need improvement. Tutors can also provide resources and strategies that may not be available in a traditional classroom setting. Ultimately, getting a tutor is an effective way to develop the skills needed to succeed in school and beyond.

Work on Time Management Skills

Effective time management is an essential skill for academic success. It’s important to have good time management skills because they will help you keep track of your readings and projects, manage your time effectively, stay organized, prioritize tasks, and create a study schedule you can follow.

You can choose how you want to organize your study schedule, but it’s important to create an easy-to-access system for tracking your deadlines, exams, and study sessions. This could be through a time-management app on your smartphone, an online daily planner, or even a physical calendar.

You’ll be successful as long as you set aside specific time slots each day or every week to complete your top priorities. This can also help you inform people close to you when you are studying so that you don’t get distracted. Try your best to eliminate negative influences and distractions that may prevent you from reaching your academic goals.

Develop Good Study Habits

It’s important to develop and maintain good study habits if you want to achieve academic success. Making good study habits part of your daily life can improve your efficiency, effectiveness, and confidence while decreasing anxiety over your coursework. It’s important to carve out some time for studying, especially if your day is already filled with family obligations, work, and other responsibilities.

To create strong study habits, you should make a daily plan that is consistent and structured. Also, create an environment conducive to learning and hold yourself accountable for your study sessions. Things like taking effective notes when listening to lectures or reading course materials, creating mind maps, and breaking up study sessions can make concepts more understandable and memorable, and help you relax.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking to set yourself up for academic success, and further your personal and professional development, you must set goals, learn to organize and manage your time, build good study habits, and use support services outside the classroom. However, remember that the key to success in academics is having the right attitude and approach.

Local Northamptonshire Pub landlady calls time as she switches from pulling pints to studying podiatry

Switching careers is a brave decision but for one student at the University of Northampton (UON) who has moved from pulling pints to podiatry, it’s been quite a shift.

39-year-old Claire Eyles is in her second year of a degree in podiatry. After co-running The Wheatsheaf pub in Braunston with husband Chris since 2016 and, many years working in the hospitality sector, she has jumped professional ships to a radically different career in a healthcare role.

A Podiatrist’s primary aim is to improve the mobility, independence, and quality of life for their patients. They specialise in the foot, ankle and leg, leading the patient care through the whole journey including prevention, diagnosis and treatment[i]. It’s an area that can appeal to people looking to re-train and change careers. This is exactly what happened to Claire, who decided after having a family young and running a successful pub with her husband to do something “just for her”.

Claire says, “We have two teenage children, and my career has taken a bit of a backseat because of family commitments, running a home and supporting my husband’s career. But I’ve always wanted to do something for me, so when the pandemic hit and with the toll it wreaked on the hospitality sector, I thought it was a good time to do something different.”

While Claire had originally planned to go to university aged 18, after meeting her husband, taking a gap year and then enjoying working she chose not to. Fast forward 20 years and after completing a 12-month access course to apply to university she got offered a place on the BSc in Podiatry at the University of Northampton.

Claire explains why she chose podiatry: “I wanted to work in healthcare, so I researched the courses at my local university to see what they offered. My daughter Pippa is a budding gymnast and is an elite tumbler for Team England. Over the years she had been treated by several podiatrists and the discipline fascinated me. You don’t realise the diversity there is even in one podiatric specialism, it is so interesting.”

She says most students on her course are mature because it’s a career most don’t think about at school. She hopes this perception is changing and likens ‘podiatry’ to what ‘dentistry’ was in the 1950s – and that over time it is slowly being seen as a healthcare discipline that goes way beyond cutting toenails.

She said: “People think it’s just treating feet, but it’s so much more. From treating patients with diabetes and those with sports injuries, to working with patients with musculoskeletal conditions and even spotting skin cancer in people’s lower limbs. People understand how varied dentistry is now. I believe podiatry is going through a similar transition. It’s a fast-evolving profession and an exciting part of healthcare to work in.”

One of the benefits of studying podiatry at UON is the university runs a Podiatry Clinic based at Northampton General Hospital which enables students to gain practical, hands-on experience from year one, something not every university offers. For Claire this is one of the stand-out features of the degree course at UON as it means students don’t feel they are thrown in the deep end when they head off on NHS placements.

She adds that the university is incredibly supportive, with great lecturers and facilities. Also, because there is a smaller cohort of students studying this subject, lectures are friendly and more like seminars in their approach, which enables people to ask lots of questions as they go along – ideal for those returning to academic study.

Claire highly recommends the course, especially for people switching careers who can bring their skills and experiences to the role. She said: You wouldn’t immediately think there are similarities between being a publican and a podiatrist, but there are transferrable skills. Many podiatrists work privately, so my experience managing a business, working with an accountant, and handling marketing and social media will come in handy in the future.

“Communication for any healthcare professional is hugely important, being able to relate to and talk with a wide variety of patients. I have worked with diverse communities of people in hospitality, young and old, who I need to engage and empathise with.”

Claire concludes about how to approach ‘dipping a toe’ in new, professional waters: “Sometimes you have to take a step to one side and look at where you are, because if you need something fulfilling, something you’ve always wanted at the back of your mind, then if you want to do it then you absolutely should.”

Morley College London invites the local community to mark the official launch of its North Kensington Centre

Morley College London is celebrating the official opening of its refurbished North Kensington Centre for Skills by inviting local residents to share stories of what brought them to North Kensington, as part of a community artwork installation.

Created through a merger of Kensington and Chelsea College with Morley College London in February 2020 the Centre will be officially re-opened in May, following a £13.5m refurbishment. Sitting at the heart of one of the most diverse communities in London, it offers a wide range of qualifications for 16–18-year-olds, short courses and adult education classes designed in partnership with local employers to create opportunities for local people to improve their lives through academic, technical and vocational education and skills development.

A three-day programme of events to mark the official re-opening of the College will culminate with a Community Open Day on Saturday 13 May, with residents invited to join staff and students for a series of events, workshops and activities at the Wornington Road site. As part of these celebrations, residents living in W10 postcodes are also being invited to design a postcard answering the question, “What brought you to North Kensington?”, which will then be displayed as part of a wider installation during the Open Day.

Craig Hanlon-Smith, Centre Principal at the North Kensington Centre for Skills, commented:

‘‘Morley College London is the only Further Education college in North Kensington, saved as a learning space by community activism after the tragedy of Grenfell. Our local community is at the heart of everything we do at the College, and as part of the launch celebrations, we wanted to create a platform for local people to tell their own stories.

“The building has been fully refurbished with new-build extensions to offer all in the area the very best environment and student experience available in London.

‘’As a proudly diverse centre for learning, the variety of lived experiences that shape our communities is one of our key strengths, providing the inspiration for our vision of a ‘go to’ centre of learning that reflects the needs and experiences of our students and the wider communities in which we all live and work.

“Anyone interested in taking part in the Postcard project should simply collect a blank A5 card from NKC’s reception, create their artwork, sign the card with their first name or nickname and hand it back to reception or post it to the Launch Art Project Team, Morley College London, Wornington Road, W10 5QQ.

“With a full programme of activities lined up for our Opening celebrations, we’re looking forward to welcoming the community back into the College, showing everyone around and supporting people across our communities to take advantage of the innovative learning opportunities on their doorstep.”

Situated on Wornington Road, W10, the refurbished Centre offers a raft of new facilities, including

  • A community skills and pathways advice centre delivered by Portobello Business Centre
  • New multi-use community and performance hall to develop performing arts opportunities
  • Refurbished crèche (free to students), supporting inclusive study for all

Attending College Amidst a Pending Recession

The current global recession has highlighted the importance of higher education for today’s students. Attending college during a recession can be daunting, with rising tuition costs, limited job opportunities, and increased competition for available financial aid and scholarships. Despite these challenges, there are several ways that students can make the most of their college experience while weathering the economic storm. This article will examine the pros, cons, and financing solutions of attending college during a recession.

Pros of Attending College

As the world faces an impending recession, many question whether it is worth pursuing higher education. While there may be some uncertainty and nervousness in the air, attending college during a recession can have its advantages. Firstly, jobs can be scarce during tough economic times, and competition for open positions can be fierce. Having a college degree on your resume could give you the edge over candidates with only a high school diploma or less. It is especially true if you want to land a job in fields requiring specialized skills or advanced knowledge. Secondly, if you are already employed but worried about potential layoffs or downsizing at your company, returning to school to earn an advanced degree or certification could make you more valuable to your employer and help secure your position.

Cons of Attending College

As the economy faces an impending recession, attending college may seem logical for individuals looking to secure their future. However, it is important to consider the potential drawbacks and obstacles of pursuing higher education during tough economic times. One of the biggest cons of attending college amid a pending recession is the financial burden it can place on students and their families. With tuition costs rising each year and job opportunities becoming scarce, many students may be saddled with debt they cannot easily repay. Another major drawback of attending college during an economic downturn is the uncertain job market upon graduation. While receiving a degree can improve one’s chances of landing a high-paying career in the long run, recent graduates may struggle to find employment immediately after completing their education.

Student Financing Solutions

As students prepare for the upcoming academic year amidst a looming recession, financial concerns remain in their minds. With the uncertainty of job prospects after graduation and the possibility of reduced financial aid packages, students must consider alternative financing solutions to ensure they can continue their education.

Apply for an Online Degree

Applying for an online degree program during a recession may seem counterintuitive. But it is one of the best investments you can make for your future. Online degrees like Engineering and Computer Science online degree have several benefits that make them ideal for students even during tough economic times. Firstly, they offer flexibility and convenience that traditional classroom-based courses cannot match. You can study from anywhere in the world without worrying about travel or accommodation expenses.

Apply for Scholarships and Grants

One option is to apply for scholarships and grants. Many organizations offer financial assistance based on merit or personal circumstances, such as community involvement or specific minority groups. Students should research available opportunities and submit applications early to increase their chances of receiving funding.

Apply for Student Loans

Another solution is student loans, but it is essential to choose wisely. Federal loans often offer lower interest rates and more flexibility in repayment plans than private loans, making them a better choice for most students. It’s also important to only borrow what’s necessary and keep track of all loan balances carefully.

Conclusion

In conclusion, attending college during a recession is no easy task. Numerous factors can contribute to the financial burden and mental strain of studying and working in an unstable economy. However, with proper planning and consideration, it is possible to successfully transition into the working world even during economically challenging times.

Sam Hawking Property Lawyers Sponsor Coronation Mountain Challenge

Port Talbot legal expert, Sam Hawking Property Lawyers, has been announced as the lead sponsor for Christ College Brecon’s epic Coronation Mountain Challenge.

The Coronation Mountain Challenge, which takes place on the King’s coronation May bank holiday weekend, is part of the school’s ambitious 2041 Mountain Challenge which launched last year.

It will be held annually up until 2041 which will mark the school’s 500th anniversary and aims to raise money year-on-year for the Christ College Brecon Foundation and Brecon Mountain Rescue.

The challenge invites competitors to take on one of three different hiking routes around the Brecon Beacons: a low level 10 mile, a high level 13 mile and a more challenging high level 23 mile route which covers some iconic peaks such as Pen y Fan, Corn Ddu and Fan y Big.

Last year, Sam Hawking, Principal at Sam Hawking Property Lawyers, completed the challenge with his whole family. He said: “Christ College Brecon held a fantastic inaugural event last year with the different routes catering for all abilities. My wife and 10-year-old daughter completed the 10 mile walk, my eldest daughter the 13 mile route and myself the 23 mile race, and we all had a fantastic day enjoying the stunning views of the Beacons.

“We are so pleased to be sponsoring the event for the second year and my family and I can’t wait to face the challenge again.”

Father and daughter Graham (70) and Alison Rees also completed the 10 mile low level route last year. Alison said: “The Mountain Challenge was great fun, following a pleasant route along the canal towpath with some beautiful scenery along on the way. Pupils cheered us on at the checkpoint giving us a boost to finish, completing in good time with a burger awaiting us at the end! It was a fantastic day out.”
