A Complete Guide to Redoing Your A Levels

Taking A Levels requires more work, and you should be determined to do well in your studies and pass the exams. A Levels is your portal to university education and often to a good career. Choose the subjects that appeal to you and will help you reach your goals, whether for undergraduate studies or your career.

Several careers expect you to have a university degree or certain A level results before you can apply for a position. Moreover, A Level study equips you with the skills you need to grow academically and professionally.

Studying A Levels is essential, but most A Level test-takers fail to meet the grade requirement for different reasons. But the good thing is you can retake your A Level exams several times.

It is understandable to feel disappointed if you fail to achieve the required grade for your chosen career, university or college course. You do not have to feel guilty because, often, redoing A Levels is more beneficial. This does not mean that you should not exert effort on your first try. Rather, retaking the A Levels gives you another chance to study better and work harder to meet the grade requirement of your chosen university or employer.

Where to retake the A Levels

You can retake your A Levels in your school, although you should ascertain that the school allows retakes. You can also enrol in an independent college. You can retake your A Levels in a tutorial college where you will receive more focused and personalised tutoring. You can also retake the course online.

Need to retake the whole course

In previous years, you could retake only the subjects you think need better grades. But recent developments changed the ruling as they shifted to a linear system, so now you have to retake all the subjects.

The exam date is now once a year

Today’s A Levels have a new schedule to give students more time to prepare and study. They are now given once a year, around May or June.

Maximise the opportunity

You want to retake your A Levels to improve your grades to enter the university of your dreams, so resolve to earn a higher score this time by knowing what went wrong the first time. You can request a copy of your previous A Level test from the exam board to review it more thoroughly. However, find out the deadline for making the request. Find your weak points and ensure that you will do more to improve your grades. Develop a study plan and avoid cramming. Use your time wisely and seek expert help to prepare for the exams better.

Consider one-to-one tuition

If you are determined to achieve a higher grade in your A Level retake, consider personalised tutoring from a sixth-form college. Your A Level retake course will concentrate on the areas where you need more support. This option might give you the best chance to succeed in the exams.

Since you have determined that you will retake your A Levels, remember not to cram. Instead, study in chunks to help you retain information better, concentrate on your weak areas, choose where you want to retake your A Levels carefully and get professional help.

ESCP Business School celebrates 50 years of European Excellence

In 2023, ESCP celebrates 50 years of the school’s European model, following the creation of EAP in 1973 and the merger with the school in 1999. This year marks the anniversary of a central pillar of ESCP’s identity: its European multi-campus model, which remains unequaled to this day.

Established in Paris in 1819, ESCP is the oldest business school in the world and was destined to be European from the outset. The school was founded upon the European values of humanism and multiculturalism and prioritises a multidisciplinary vision of education, with a focus on science and language.

In the school’s history, the year 1973 was pivotal as it saw the birth of its second half, EAP, the first educational institution to operate on several European campuses.

Today, with campuses in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Turin and Warsaw, ESCP is the only business school offering Europeans and non-Europeans a unique and comprehensive vision of Europe. The strength of this model was recognised in the latest Financial Times European Business Schools Ranking which placed ESCP 3rd among the top 95 business schools in Europe.

ESCP is totally European in nature, culture and structure. Today, all programmes are multi-campus, 35% of its students are non-French European and 25% non-European. To graduate, all ESCP students must study on at least two or three campuses. ESCP’s campuses and the degrees students receive are officially recognised in all of its host countries.

Léon Laulusa, ESCP’s interim dean and executive president, says: “As we look to the future, we are proud to continue to unite our campuses with pride for European excellence, open to the world and committed to progress. ESCP Business School is not only a European institution but a global leader in business education, recognised for our multiculturalism and commitment to educating purpose-driven leaders who will impact the world.”

Throughout the year, ESCP will celebrate its pioneering model and European network with dedicated events and opportunities to connect past, present and future generations of the ESCP community, starting with the first Europe Week organised by the student society Tribunes, from March 27 to March 31st. Please check the European Way webpage for more information.

Wrexham University announces New Tender opportunity for design and construction of the Enterprise Engineering and Optics Centre

The Enterprise Engineering and Optics Centre project has announced a new £8.35 million tender opportunity to design and construct the new centre that will support manufacturing businesses in the region to decarbonise.

The Wrexham Glyndŵr University project now invites businesses to submit bids to design and construct the new building at the Plas Coch site, including the installation of a hydrogen application facility and renewable energy photovoltaic panels.

The project aims to support manufacturing businesses in the region to decarbonise by exploring the integrated use of optics, photonics and composites as alternative, lighter-weight solutions across all manufacturing specialisms.

When operational, businesses can use the facilities to test materials within a controlled environment, providing more efficient products and systems requiring less energy, which will minimise costs and carbon emissions. Additionally, the project will create local job and training opportunities and attract investment.

Hedd Vaughan-Evans, Head of Operations at Ambition North Wales, is delighted to see the progress of the Enterprise Engineering and Optics Centre project. “There is no doubt the project will drive product development in low carbon technologies, critical to the future success of regional businesses. We’re eager that businesses in the region have the skills and capacity to respond to decarbonisation opportunities in the manufacturing sector.”

“As with all Growth Deal investments, the project seeks tender applications demonstrating social value for the region and how they will help achieve our biodiversity and emission reduction targets. So we’re looking for businesses that will create value for North Wales and positively impact the entire region”.

Aulay Mackenzie, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Wrexham Glyndŵr University, has reiterated how he hopes local businesses will take up this opportunity.

“Building on existing expertise and strategic links within the University, the new Centre and provision of cutting-edge equipment will enable expansion of our research capacity to support local manufacturing businesses of all types to meet the pressing need to become more efficient and reduce carbon emissions.’’

Businesses interested in tendering for this opportunity can download the full tender pack by visiting Sell2Wales at the link here.

Construction aims to start in February 2024, with an estimated opening in 2025.

How mentoring young people is boosting diversity and talent pipelines for businesses

In National Careers Week (6th to 11th March) Career Accelerator, an education business that connects businesses and young people is shining a light on how firms can nurture diverse talent and build talent pipelines through schools outreach opportunities.

Career Accelerator works with companies including Cisco, Pearson, Just Eat, Vodafone and GoCardless to offer mentoring programmes for students from diverse backgrounds. These include the new Neurodiversity and Disability Programme and LGBT+ business mentoring to prepare young people for successful careers.

Students that engage with businesses can develop knowledge, experience and skills that are valued in the workplace, whilst businesses can address skills shortages, boost diversity and talent pipelines, as well as provide developmental opportunities for their employees.

A report last year, ‘Diversity in Tech and its Role in Future Equality’ by Wiley Edge[i] found that 64% of businesses are struggling to retain diverse employees. But equally nearly half of young tech workers (48%) have felt uncomfortable in a job because of their gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background or neurodevelopmental condition.

Also, it was reported that there were around 870,000 tech and digital job vacancies available January to May 2022, the highest number ever recorded since job search engine Adzuna began collecting data in May 2012. It was also revealed that tech roles now make up 14% of all job opportunities in the UK, up from 11% in 2019[ii].

Mayur Gupta, CEO at Career Accelerator

Mayur Gupta, CEO at Career Accelerator said: “Despite a big push in recent years to improve diversity in workplaces, many firms are still failing to become attractive places for underrepresented groups to work. We are helping to change this by encouraging firms to engage with young people from diverse backgrounds whilst they are still at school.

“Preparing diverse young people for careers in the modern economy and supporting businesses to provide employee training, volunteering, and marketing opportunities is making a real difference to diversity and inclusion. It’s giving young people the chance to shine and develop careers they may not have thought open to them and for employers to gain fresh perspectives and widen their talent pool.”

Cisco has been working with Career Accelerator for the past three years helping young people from low income and diverse backgrounds prepare for careers in the digital sector. They run a school’s programme, as well as a LGBT+ programme and Neurodiversity and Disability programme.

Speaking about his experience mentoring a young person called Kade, Alvaro Berruga from Cisco said: “It’s great making an impact in someone’s career by helping them in areas that they are not familiar with yet.  I helped Kade improve his software engineering skills, and gave some suggestions to him on how to deal with his manager to achieve his goals and setting a roadmap of things he could work on.”

He adds, “I also learned a lot from him, so it was a very good experience. Mentoring someone helps you develop your communication skills and understand the needs of people who have barely started in software development. This is very useful when managing a team, or even when helping an intern or newcomer in the company.”

Centrica has also worked with Career Accelerator over the past three years firstly with their race network, and more recently they have started neurodiversity and disability mentoring.

They offered work experience to students from diverse backgrounds. Students in their final year of GCSE’s or studying for ‘A’ levels were based in British Gas’s commercial team, gaining exposure to different parts of the business to help prepare them for their future careers.

Donna Anderson from Centrica said: “I’ve loved having the opportunity to support someone from a diverse background and at the same time give something back to our society. It really helped me to work with someone who had never had any exposure to my business before and to appreciate the different ages and stages that people come into a working environment and the different needs they might have.

“It helped me as an experienced mentor, to flex my style from working with an adult to an under 16 and adapt my advice and activities to suit the relevant age. Not knowing who my mentee would be, or his background was a great reminder to be open, transparent and provide a safe place for someone to be themselves and to never pre-judge or have bias of anyone regardless of age, race, culture, ability etc.”

Why is learning Geography important?

Geography is an enthralling and diverse study that investigates the intricate interactions that exist in general between the planet, its natural properties, and its inhabitants. Nowadays, thanks to private geography tutors, you can broaden your understanding of the globe by examining its physical components. This discipline is extremely important and provides a lot of advantages because it can develop your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, but not only. It’s time to explore the importance of this matter in more detail in the next few paragraphs.

What is Geography?

Geography investigates the complex links between the planet, its physical aspects, and its population. It is more than just a study of maps and national capitals. It is a complete exploration of how different areas and locations are interrelated. This subject also increases your overall awareness by providing you with information on topics such as humans, the environment, politics, the economy, and on society globally.

The experts from the UK website Tutorextra.co.uk explain this subject as the study of locations and the interactions between humans and their surroundings. As such, it illuminates how the earth’s landscapes such as mountain ranges and bodies of water influence people’s behaviour and decision-making. It seeks to provide information about the effect of the earth’s characteristics on people’s history, as well as the relationships between humans and the locations and places in which they live.

Geography Classes

As was mentioned, this is a dynamic and multidisciplinary discipline that can teach you about the interactions between people, places, and the environment. It covers a wide variety of disciplines that can enrich your understanding and awareness of the globe, from researching physical elements of the planet to evaluating cultural, political, and economic systems.

While taking such types of lessons, students learn about the earth’s natural characteristics, such as landforms, climate, flora, and bodies of water, as well as how they impact human existence and behaviour. Also, they learn about subjects including population increase, migration, urbanisation, globalisation, and cultural diversity. These lessons show students how to utilise maps, satellite pictures, and other geographical tools to better comprehend and visualise the globe and its different components. This field is, in the fullest sense, a life and living education. This education, whether academic or experiential through travel, fieldwork, and expeditions, helps students become more socially and ecologically aware, better informed, and responsible citizens and employers.

Nowadays, different options give you the chance to learn this subject which varies from online private lessons to graduate programmes in universities or schools. No matter which one you choose, you will start with the fundamentals and gradually upgrade to the more advanced topics. If you are a beginner, or you want to prepare yourself for an exam or the application before university, having a private tutor is the best option for you. Having a teacher only for yourself will help you grasp the material faster because you will be acquainted with diverse education projects and activities specially designed for your needs.

5 reasons to make you learn geography

Here are the reasons why it is important to learn this matter:

1. Learn the Environment.

Geography teaches about the physical processes that shape our world, such as plate tectonics, ocean currents, and weather patterns. One can learn about the environment and the influence that human actions have on it. Also, learning this matter, you will have more comprehension of why natural disasters are happening such as earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.

2.  Knowledge of Cultures, Politics, and Economic Systems.

Geography teaches us about the cultures, political, and economic institutions that influence our civilisation in addition to the earthly features of the planet. You can learn also about other cultures, as well as human relationships and their traditions, beliefs, etc. This information is essential for developing a better grasp of the world and making sound judgments regarding the future.

3. Grow Essential Skills.

Another good side of Geography is that it can grow a variety of vital abilities, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, project management, and decision-making. These skills are useful in both personal and professional contexts and will benefit them throughout their life.

4. Opportunities for Employment.

If you complete a degree in this field, you will have various skills and information that you may apply to several jobs and personal activities. Graduates can find employment in fields such as environmental management, planning, cartography, tourism, and international development. Furthermore, experts from the UK website Tutorextra.co.uk share that graduates in geography have valuable job prospects and greater salaries than graduates of numerous other fields.

5. Exciting Travel Possibilities.

Don’t forget about the travel possibilities. Diving deeper into this field may give you more acquaintance with the globe and the numerous cultures and landscapes that make it distinct by making you learn about the geography of other countries.

Overall, geography is an important component of education that provides students with numerous benefits and future opportunities. Also, they can broaden their knowledge and learn more about the world. Whether you want to learn more about geography for personal or professional reasons, the time has come to dive into this intriguing topic.

Sustainability at the core of new student competition with Microsoft Italia and three top business schools

A competition aiming to tackle societal, economic, and environmental challenges has been launched by three major European academic institutions – POLIMI Graduate School of Management, EDHEC Business School, and ESMT Berlin.

Supported by Microsoft Italia, INNOVA Europe invites students from bachelor to master’s level to submit innovative proposals that address any one of the specific challenges outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).“Technology and innovation are the key forces behind tangible action on environmental and social sustainability. This challenge was launched precisely to provide skills and guidance to young students and entrepreneurs who are committed to devising effective solutions to address the challenges that the European Union has identified as fundamental for the coming years and to shaping a better future for all,” explained Tommaso Agasisti, Associate Dean for Internationalization and Quality at POLIMI Graduate School of Management.

With collaboration and entrepreneurial thinking at the heart of this initiative, the three leading business schools from, Italy, France and Germany believe this competition will generate new products and solutions that can target a particular problem relating to at least one of the 17 UN SDGs.

“Our economies, societies, and cultures are facing unprecedented challenges, creating both threats and opportunities. Cooperation across countries is fundamental to instigate the rapid change needed, and we believe that fostering responsible entrepreneurship as well as bringing up the contribution of student innovators can be decisive in what the future holds,” said Ludovic Cailluet, Associate Dean for The Centre for Responsible Entrepreneurship at EDHEC Business School.

The winning team will receive a prize which consists of €5,000, and vital incubation services offered by the three academic incubators of the partner Schools – PoliHub, EDHEC Entrepreneurs, or Vali Berlin.

“With the Student Challenge for Sustainable Development Impact, we are creating a new form of international collaboration that prepares students for the challenges of tomorrow. In the process, they not only learn entrepreneurial thinking and develop innovative creativity, but they also gain access to a network from which they can benefit far beyond the competition,” said Baris Efe, manager and co-founder of Vali Berlin at ESMT.

“Together with POLIMI Graduate School of Management, we are looking for innovators capable of promoting positive change in Italy and Europe through digital. Technological innovations, beginning with Cloud and Artificial Intelligence, are more strategic than ever for driving sustainable growth and a more equitable society. We need to join forces and put systems in place to achieve a common goal: that of ensuring a better future for ourselves and for the new generations,” said Matteo Mille, Chief Marketing and Operations Officer at Microsoft Italia.

Christ College Brecon – one of the oldest schools in Wales – is opening its doors to prospective pupils and their families on Saturday, March 25th. Christ College was founded in 1541 by Henry VIII and is consistently named in the Sunday Times’ top private schools guide. The independent co-educational boarding and day school is rated “excellent” across all five Estyn inspection categories and 46% of pupils achieve grade 9-7 (A-A*) GCSE results with 47% going on to receive A-A* in their A Levels.

The Open Day will invite prospective pupils and families to tour the school with Prefects and gain an insight into life at the college from an academic perspective as well as experiencing the co-curricular provision.

The school’s picturesque setting

Christ College has recently undergone an expansion, reconfiguring its lower ‘Prep’ school, St Nicholas House, to include a Key Stage 1 class. The next phase of the development will see the integration of its junior section and Year 7-8 classes, and the introduction of a brand new reception class accepting pupils from the age of four.

St Nicholas House was established in September 2014 and currently accommodates 60 pupils across five classes up to Year 6.

Gareth Pearson, Head of Christ College Brecon said: “Christ College has strong academic provision at its core, but the key to the school’s success is its friendly, nurturing atmosphere. The faculty and pupils are looking forward to welcoming families to the school and showing them around our extensive grounds and helping parents in their decision.”

Welsh woman kickstarts new career after spending two years caring full-time for her grandmother thanks to Welsh Government’s Personal Learning Account

Helen Minns from Cwmbran made the difficult decision to return to work during a family illness

A 44-year-old mother to two teenagers has changed her career after caring for her grandmother full time.

Having only recently started working again, Helen decided to study a Health and Safety course on the Welsh Government’s Personal Learning Account programme to help support her family in a new and exciting role.

Helen has since gone on to gain a full-time position as a Health & Safety assistant and is enjoying rebuilding her career around her new family dynamic.

Helen said: “During my marriage, I was fortunate enough to be in a position to care for my grandmother at a time when she was diagnosed with Dementia. It was and still is a difficult time, but I’m so glad I was able to be there for her.”

But Helen went through a divorce three years ago, which prompted her return to employment. She continued: “Thankfully, another family member was able to take on the caring role when my own family circumstances changed, which meant I could begin looking for a job.”

After a while, Helen secured a health and safety role, which was not something she had ever worked in before or had planned to get into.

“It wasn’t the job I had initially applied for. But when I interviewed at Melin Homes, they thought I would be ideal for a role in the health and safety team to cover some maternity leave. When the contract ended, I was hired in the company permanently, but in a different team.”

After having worked in her newer role at the company for a period of time, Helen was evaluating what area of work she wanted to do in the long term and made the decision to try and get back into a health and safety role once again.

Helen said: “When I worked in health and safety, I found my work interesting and engaging, so decided that I wanted to return to and pursue a career in it. It’s also an area of work that will always be in demand, which appealed to me too.

“A lot of jobs advertised in the industry often ask for a NEBOSH (National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety) qualification as a standard, so I began looking for places where I could complete the course to improve my skillset.”

The NEBOSH course is a globally recognised qualification that gives you knowledge of key concepts relating to health and safety, including the laws and legislations surrounding it.

“Initially, I was looking to pay for a course and was saving up to fund this qualification for myself. But when I contacted Coleg Gwent to enquire about the NEBOSH course there, they told me I would be eligible for a Personal Learning Accounts programme funded by the Welsh Government.”

Personal Learning Accounts help adults in Wales study part-time around their existing work and family commitments.

Fully funded by the Welsh Government, the programme provides free and flexible courses to help learners gain the skills and qualifications they need to progress in their current or new career.

A Personal Learning Account is available to adults in Wales who are aged 19 and above, in employment and earning under £29,534, or are at risk of being made redundant.

There is no earning cap of £29,534 on approved courses or qualifications in digital or green skills.

Over 30,000 people have signed up for a Personal Learning Account course since its launch in 2019, and the programme’s most popular courses include Health & Safety, Health and Social Care, Project Management, Accounting, Information Technology, Digital Marketing, Vehicle Repair and Maintenance.

Helen commends the multiple benefits of her Personal Learning Account, praising its ability to lead her to a new career and how it easily fitted into her schedule alongside existing commitments as a mother and full-time employee.

She continued: “Accessing the Personal Learning Account was incredibly easy for me. All I had to do was fill out a form online, and within a couple of phone calls everything was set up and ready to go. The access to the course was incredibly straightforward.”

“I like that there isn’t a time limit set on it. As long as you finish the course content and pass the exam at the end of the year, that’s all you need to do. There is no pressure on you to complete certain parts of it at a specific time. I think it’s great that I can do it as and when I want to.

“My course is being delivered online, so I don’t have to turn up to a classroom each week.  My classes are all online so I can pick it up and drop it whenever I have a spare 30 mins, which fits around my life.

“It’s been a huge benefit to me that I haven’t needed to pay for it, as I could access the course immediately rather than waiting until I’d put aside some money for it.”

Helen began her Personal Learning Account course in May 2022 and will continue it into next year alongside her new permanent role.

“The original position in Health and Safety at Melin Homes became available again. I’ve just secured this role in the past few weeks after proving my interest in the subject with my ongoing Personal Learning Accounts, so will be returning to health and safety sooner than I’d anticipated!

She aims to complete subsequent qualifications and continue upskilling herself throughout her career.
