Antarctic Fire Angels Complete Ground-breaking Expedition with Help from Getac Rugged Technology

Getac’s UX10 fully rugged tablet used for medical research and evening entertainment during 52-day journey through one of the world’s most inhospitable environments.

The Antarctic Fire Angels, a pair of firefighters from Wales, have successfully completed their ground-breaking expedition from Union Glacier to Constellation Inlet, and on to the South Pole, making them the first all-female team from the emergency services to complete the journey unsupported.

Georgina ‘George’ Gilbert and Rebecca ‘Bex’ Openshaw-Rowe skied the 1,230km route in 52 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes, to realise a dream that was originally conceived over four years ago. Along the way they had to navigate around countless deadly crevasses, often in whiteout conditions, and in freezing temperatures where just a few seconds of exposure can quickly result in frostbite.

As an unsupported expedition, George and Bex carried everything they needed with them on sledges known as pulks, which weighed over 110kgs at the beginning of the expedition. This included all the food, medical supplies and technology required to successfully reach the South Pole unaided. In addition to specialist equipment like GPS trackers and satellite navigation devices, George and Bex carried a Getac UX10 fully rugged tablet with them on their journey. This enabled them to conduct important medical research on behalf of Cardiff University throughout the expedition, as well as enjoy some much-needed media entertainment at the end of each day.

Getac’s UX10 is built to thrive in highly challenging environments and weather conditions like those found in Antarctica. Featuring IP66 and military-grade MIL-STD 810H certification, it can withstand temperatures as low as -29°C (-20°F), and is water, dust and 6-foot (1.8m) drop resistant while operating. Its high-capacity batteries also offer long period of operation between charges, making it ideal for the team’s needs.

“In an extreme environment like the Antarctic you need to have total faith in your equipment, and we knew that only rugged technology would do,” said George. “At the end of each day’s skiing we would quickly unload our pulks, set up camp, and throw the UX10 into the tent, where we would use it each evening throughout the expedition. From the first day to the last it performed flawlessly, just as we expected it to.”

“Getac was proud to support the Antarctic Fire Angels on their pioneering expedition to the South Pole,” said Paul Waddilove, Managing Director of Getac UK Ltd. “From the moment we heard about their plans, we knew the UX10 would be a great addition to their equipment list, thanks to its fully rugged build quality, low temperature operation and compact form factor. On behalf of Getac, I would like to congratulate George and Bex on completing their incredible journey and proving that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible!”

Getac Public Safety lead Will Hitch, who is a former member of the emergency services, added “This was the perfect project to showcase the UX10’s capabilities, but it’s also a statement of intent from Getac UK, that we’re passionate about supporting the people behind the uniform, as well as providing their rugged tech solutions. It’s doing both that sets us apart.”

Teekanne Celebrates 14 Years of Sustainable Manufacturing with Getac Rugged Solutions

  • High process efficiency through full utilization of all production capacities
  • Performance and reliability of Getac rugged laptops ensure smooth operations
  • Very low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) achieved due to 14+ years device usage

Getac, a leading manufacturer of rugged computing solutions, has announced that Teekanne Group, a tea-maker, based in Dusseldorf, Germany is using its rugged devices as part of a sustainable IT solution. The Teekanne Group, founded in 1882, is a globally active, traditional family company that has been producing tea bags since 1954. The group runs one of the most modern tea manufacturing sites in Europe, producing, packing and distributing up to 3.2 billion tea bags per year.

Getac and the Teekanne Group have marked the 14th anniversary of their successful technology partnership, delivering sustainable manufacturing solutions all along Teekanne’s production lines. Teekanne first began using Getac’s rugged devices in 2009, when it selected the Getac S400 semi-rugged laptop as the cornerstone of its IT solution. The extensive range of interfaces and high compatibility for controlling older software and machines were just as significant in the choice of the S400  as its robustness and durability for all uses in production, maintenance and repair as well as logistics.

Since then, Getac’s S400 and its successor, the Getac S410, have proven themselves time and time again. The machines – even systems with different serial interfaces – can be controlled and connected securely, which ensures smooth processes without unnecessarily expensive machine stops. The Getac laptops support predictive maintenance, machine servicing, troubleshooting and programming. Maintenance can be planned rationally, thus reducing costs.

Production capacities continue to be fully utilised, including those of the older machines. Strong performance, user-friendly display that is always easy to read, durability and the high reliability of Getac rugged laptops have also paid off over the years.

The robust design, solid flip-up mechanism and user-friendly display of the S400 and S410 laptops guarantee stable, trouble-free operations at Teekanne even after more than a decade: in environments with ubiquitous tea dust, after drops, shocks or vibration. Due to the high performance and reliability of Getac laptops, Teekanne benefits from smooth operations and full utilisation of its valuable production capacity. This reduces costs and ensures customer satisfaction.

“We know from experience that consumer laptops don’t last long; quality has its price – and after 14 years we can see that the investment in the robust Getac laptop has more than paid off,” says Mehmet Agar in retrospect. “The devices still look like new today, and the introduction of the even lighter S410 further supports us in optimising processes. Our older special systems can be controlled perfectly with it and continue to be integrated into the production processes without restrictions.”

Eric Yeh, Managing Director at Getac, explains: “The long-standing use of Getac laptops at Teekanne is an impressive example of the durability, reliability and high robustness of our products. With the variety of interfaces, even the older but particularly production-relevant to Teekanne special plants can continue to operate without any problems – that’s what I call real sustainability!”

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service Selects Toughbook 33 Rugged Devices

The TOUGHBOOK 33’s rugged design, combined with advanced software, and powerful connectivity improves the effectiveness of its fire service.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has chosen 143 Panasonic TOUGHBOOK 33 rugged detachable devices for installation in its 93 vehicles, serving as an Airwave Certified & ESN-ready Mobile Data Terminal (MDT), and as a demountable device in the rear of its appliances.

The rugged Panasonic TOUGHBOOK 33 device has been provided by technology distributor Centerprise, partnering with 3tc to deploy the MODAS software suite.

The TOUGHBOOK 33 device is a popular choice for fire services across the country. It’s a 2-in-1, 12.0″ fully rugged notebook with the tablet detachable, and features hot-swappable twin batteries, for unrivalled flexibility and performance.

Reliable connectivity is key

3tc’s MODAS Professional software ensures effective communication between control and vehicles on the move. Used internationally and by a third of UK Fire and Rescue Services, MODAS Professional leads its field in Incident Command.

Its features include comprehensive integration with CAD systems and with Airwave, 4G, ESN, Wi-Fi; full integration with fire and rescue service back-office systems; centralised MDT management and enhanced Incident Ground Safety and Management for operational intelligence at the touch of a button.

As well as a modern MDT, approved for use with the new Emergency Services Network, GMFRS has equipped the TOUGHBOOK 33 with 4G connectivity in the rear of 53 of its vehicles.

Versatility of TOUGHBOOK

GMFRS is also using MODAS Web, which provides access to mission critical information such as SSRI data sets, live resource location updates (AVL) and other Points of Interest information using a simple and intuitive web solution. Using the TOUGHBOOK device, fire officers can access hydrant location information, building plans, risk cards, operating guidance, and home fire safety checks.

The 3tc software and features of the TOUGHBOOK 33s mounted in the rear of the GMFRS vehicles, such as sensors and cameras, allows the devices to be used for a number of mobile applications. Fire officers can access hydrant location information, building plans, risk cards, operating guidance. They can also assess chemical risk data prior to arriving at a location and conduct home fire safety checks.

Atul Patel, Product Manager at 3tc Software said: “The combination and close integration of the 3tc MODAS software suite with the Panasonic TOUGHBOOK device provides a powerful tool for fire services like Greater Manchester. As well as the MDT, it allows officers outside of the vehicle to have access to the information they need at their fingertips to deal with any situation – using technology to become ever more efficient and effective. The solution has the flexibility to add more applications as needed but always with the peace of mind of the highest levels of security and availability.”

Identical install solution for maximum flexibility

An identical total install solution, including docking station, power supply and ESN-ready Sure antennas, was fitted in its 93 vehicles. This enables TOUGHBOOK devices to be swappable across all appliances. In addition, specialist vehicles that are only used occasionally can carry a TOUGHBOOK device in the rear as needed – maximising the use of mobile devices.

Ian Parry, Operational Systems and Support Officer at GMFRS, said: “We wanted the same capabilities as an office on wheels. The most important criteria were that the devices in the front and rear of the appliances would have the same user interface and access to the same information, but the rear device would be demountable to use outside of the vehicle.”

Will Holmes, Business Manager (Public Sector), Panasonic TOUGHBOOK, comments: “The TOUGHBOOK 33 is an awesome piece of kit, designed from the ground up to support emergency service professionals in the most demanding environments they face, ensuring they have fast, reliable access to vital data to help them respond more effectively, whatever the situation.”

Panasonic And Roda Computer Develop Toughbook 40 Military In-Vehicle Solution

The TOUGHBOOK 40 Military is the latest defence sector solution from the long-standing relationship between Panasonic and roda computer.

Panasonic Mobile Solutions Business Division has today announced the TOUGHBOOK 40 Military variant, specially developed for use in military vehicles. The TOUGHBOOK 40 Military is the latest solution from the long-standing relationship between Panasonic and roda computer GmbH, which has a long history of configuring and customising TOUGHBOOK devices for various military applications.

Designed With Defence In-Mind

The TOUGHBOOK 40 is dust and water resistant to IP66 and tested to military standards MIL-STD810H. It can withstand a drop from a height of 180 cm and is resistant to shocks, vibrations and operating temperatuwilres between -29°C and 63°C. The battery life can be extended to 36 hours, thanks to the hot-swappable function. If necessary, all radio and display functions can be immediately switched off when in ‘Concealed Mode’.

Designed specifically for use inside military vehicles and fully compliant with defence sector regulations, the 14-inch TOUGHBOOK 40 Military builds upon the world’s premier rugged notebook for the defence industry. It’s configured to run on Windows 11 Pro and, with four expansion slots and military-grade interfaces, offers maximum flexibility. It features MIL-LAN for Ethernet connectivity for communication with other systems, MIL-DVI for connecting to external displays and two USB 2.0 interfaces for peripheral devices.

Depending on the customer’s requirements, additional interfaces can be implemented, for example CAN Bus, MIL-DP, MIL-VGA or USB 3.0. In addition, roda computer can also check whether a fibre solution can be integrated.

It can also be equipped with the Eclypt® Core Encrypted Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) from global communications company, Viasat. The Viasat SSD is certified for use in the UK for securing Top Secret information and all security levels below, as well as certified for use by NATO and other European countries.

Military-Grade Connections Reduce Failure Rates

Additional peripherals are connected to the TOUGHBOOK 40 Military with defence-grade connectors (which can be merged into a single connector if necessary), with an optimised EMC connection also available. These connections can withstand significant in-vehicle vibrations, and are also resistant to drops of liquid, dust, and moisture. The bayonet and screw plugs are easy to connect, even when wearing gloves.

When compared with commercial devices, the robust nature of military-grade connections ensure fewer component failures. This allows for increased device uptime and connectivity in the most challenging of environments.

Florian Aschmoneit, CTO at roda computer, says: “Digitalisation has increased demand for mobile IT in the military, and more robust hardware. Users and decision-makers want devices that provide high levels of performance, as well as being as compact as possible, and equipped with military-grade secure interfaces and connections for a wide range of applications. As a result, modular devices that are easily modified provide the most cost-effective option for military use.”

A Partnership That Delivers Results

Panasonic and roda computer have long cooperated on a number of large-scale projects, with the recent additional focus of customising tailored TOUGHBOOKs for in-vehicle use for a number of military customers. roda computer’s 30 years of defence industry experience, paired with Panasonic’s proven range of military-grade TOUGHBOOK devices, provide an unbeatable combination of rugged, secure, and reliable defence sector solutions.

Jon Tucker, General Manager, Solutions and Engineering, at Panasonic TOUGHBOOK: “The TOUGHBOOK 40 Military is the product of the long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship between Panasonic and roda computer. This is reflected in our ongoing commitment to developing state-of-the-art flexible and future-proof solutions for the security and defence sectors across Europe.”

Getac continues to push the boundaries of innovation with first rugged devices featuring fully embedded LiFi technology

Getac working closely with Signify to develop next generation LiFi rugged solutions.

The proof of concept solution will be showcased on Getac’s stand (H7-H230, Hall 2) at DSEI 2023, taking place from 12-15th September at ExCel London, UK.

Getac today announced it has successfully embedded LiFi technology into its rugged devices as part of a new innovation project with Signify, the global leader in lighting.

At the forefront of LiFi innovation

Getac has been at the forefront of LiFi innovation for a number of years, having previously been the first manufacturer to engineer rugged devices with integrated LiFi via the use of external dongles. Now, the company has taken this a step further by fully embedding the technology into its devices, achieving another industry-first in the process.

Getac is working closely with Signify’s Trulifi technology on the project, with the aim of bringing LiFi technology to its customers. Further announcements detailing the devices themselves and their commercial availability will be made in the future.

Backed by the Light Communication Alliance

Both Signify and Getac are part of the Light Communication Alliance (LCA), a community of industry leaders, researchers, and innovators who believe in the power of Optical Wireless Communication to transform the way organisations connect and communicate.

The LCA understands that advancing light communication requires a collaborative ecosystem approach, with members working closely together to research, develop and deploy viable LiFi technology.

Signify Trulifi and rugged technology: The future of secure, reliable communication

LiFi (Light Fidelity) technology uses light to transmit data rather than radio frequency, which is the case with traditional technologies such as WiFi, LTE, 4G, 5G etc. This innovative approach has multiple benefits over RF-based technologies, including extremely low latency, improved privacy and security, and superior connection quality, especially in RF-denied environments.

Combining these benefits with the reliability of Getac’s rugged solutions unlocks a wide range of powerful new applications across sectors where professionals work in challenging conditions every day. For example, LiFi’s minimal cabling requirements enables defence professionals to install highly secure field communications networks in a matter of minutes. LiFi can be especially beneficial in RF-constrained or RF-denied environments, aiding digital transformation in industries such as industrial manufacturing, where there can be concerns over RF-based equipment interfering with safety-critical operations.

“Getac has long recognised the potential of LiFi technology to fundamentally change the way many organisations work and communicate” says Amanda Ward, EMEA Senior Director, Technology & Services at Getac. “Through our partnership with Signify, we’re fully committed to designing and manufacturing and embedding innovative rugged LiFi solutions that will enable our customers to turn this potential into a reality.”

“Some of LiFi’s most game-changing applications and use cases are in sectors where highly challenging work conditions make rugged solutions an essential part of the technology equation,” says Mark Gunther, Global Segment Leader LiFi Systems at Signify. “As a global leader in rugged computing and fellow LCA member, Getac is the ideal partner to help us unlock the power of light for brighter lives and a better world.”

Getac Technology Corporation, a leading producer of rugged technology, today announced that two new IDC MarketScape reports named the company a worldwide Leader in Rugged Mobile Devices and Rugged Tablet and PC.

The reports, “IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Rugged Mobile Devices 2023 Vendor Assessment1 and IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Tablet and PC 2023 Vendor Assessment2,” noted, “Despite challenges, the future of rugged mobility is secure. Rugged devices perform tasks that consumer-grade devices cannot, and they excel in highly specialized enterprise workflows. As more businesses seek to enable larger segments of their workforce, frontline workers present a clear opportunity for growth.”

“We believe these results are further proof of Getac’s leadership in setting the standard in rugged computing devices, software, accessories and professional services tailored to each customer,” said James Hwang, President of Getac Technology Corporation. “We collaborate proactively with our customers to resolve operational challenges at every level to ensure performance in extreme working environments. This results in a lower total cost of ownership because Getac devices are designed from the ground up to handle challenging conditions.”

The IDC MarketScape noted that “Enterprise organizations that require either Android- or Windows-based fully rugged solutions designed for a multitude of frontline use cases should consider Getac high on their list of rugged device providers.”

Additional specific strengths of Getac featured in the reports include:

  • Extensive solutions portfolio: “Getac offers an extensive portfolio of rugged hardware that is differentiated across multiple OSs, form factors, and screen sizes. In addition, Getac has differentiated offerings in rugged in-car video and body-worn cameras not offered by its direct competitors. These adjacent offerings create potential for additional expansion into public safety and law enforcement.”
  • Vertically integrated supply chain: “Getac designs and manufactures its own products and works with Getac Holdings’ subsidiaries to make key critical components, including motherboards, batteries, mobile computing chassis, and copolymer mechanical components for a vertically integrated supply chain.”
