£4.2m boost for St Joseph’s Hospital in Newport Investment for latest technologies and increased patient capacity

St Joseph’s Hospital in Newport, the independent hospital acknowledged for its supportive and compassionate care, has announced it will benefit from a further £4.2m investment during its 75th anniversary year.   

The third part of a phased process, the investment will fund a new state-of-the-art GE X-Ray machine for the Advanced Diagnostic Centre as well as extensive upgrading and refurbishment work, which will see the hospital reducing activity over the Christmas to minimise any disruption. 

St Joseph’s Hospital continues to focus on developing the most efficient healthcare systems, facilities, and technologies available as it increases capacity and enhances safety measures for patients. Previous investment led to the opening of a new £3m Day Surgery Unit earlier this year and the installation of a market-leading MRI scanner. 

This latest wave of investment will also allow for the introduction of the very latest diagnostic reporting system, enabling a rapid access clinical pathway, the provision of additional day surgery capacity and the installation of a brand new fourth surgical environment for microsurgical procedures. A recruitment drive across a number of clinical positions will also be launched. 

St Joseph’s Hospital is continuing to invest in the structure and in its entire estate while implementing ongoing improvements. The hospital’s water and heating system is currently under refurbishment to improve energy efficiency in line with eco-performance. Inpatient bedrooms are also being refurbished to a five-star standard following the roll out of the new TV screens that give patients access to digital TV and Sky channels. 

A brand new Air Handling Unit is being installed into the two main theatres, which is critical in ensuring patient safety. High-grade air exchange is vital in surgical environments, as contaminants and pathogens should be completely filtered out to prevent risks of infection.  

The hospital will have the capacity to see 68,000 patients a year.

The provision for increased demand from private patients with leading consultant specialists where safety comes first means expanding to increase current and future capacity. The new ownership and multi-million-pound investment have enabled us to do this in a safe environment.”

In recent weeks we have embraced technology with the introduction of game-changing artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled health assessments and have invested in advanced diagnostics.”  

  St Joseph’s Hospital continues to offer innovative support to the NHS in reducing waiting lists, working with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, as well as supporting the local community and registered charities. Cerebral Palsy Cymru and St David’s Hospice two charities currently receiving support from the hospital.
