Business and education took flight on return of popular Aerospace Wales expo

BUSINESS took flight at an event showcasing top names in the global aerospace arena.

Hosted by Coleg Cambria Deeside, the Aerospace Wales Expo was organised to unlock supply chain opportunities, uniting key speakers, delegates, and suppliers from across the UK.

It was also a chance for learners at Cambria to meet industry leaders and discuss future career pathways.

Wales is a centre of excellence for aerospace manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) related activities, employing more than 23,000 people.

Following a successful inaugural launch of the event at Cambria in 2019, Vice Principal for Technology, Engineering and Construction, Nick Tyson, said it was a fantastic platform for both the students, the supply chain, and international companies.

He added: “The college has a long-standing partnership with Aerospace Wales so it’s great to see the return of the Expo and to have so many incredible organisations from a wide range of industries here today.

“It was also an opportunity to demonstrate the cutting-edge facilities we have at Deeside and for businesses, educators and organisations in the supply chain to network and forge relationships, which all has a positive impact on the economy.”

Together with Nu-Tech Exhibitions and Events, Aerospace Wales also held a conference featuring presentations on the supply chain and new technologies, followed by one-to-one meetings among buyers and end users and a ‘Capability Showcase’ display focused on tech transfer, innovation, and engineering.

Nu-Tech Managing Director Lisa Jones-Taylor said: “We were really pleased with the level of attendance and networking that was achieved at this year’s event, which was even bigger than the inaugural Expo of 2019.

“It’s clear to us that despite the complications surrounding the pandemic, delegates and participating exhibitors were still keen to interact in a safe face-to-face environment.

“This is where contacts can be made, discussions can be held, and equipment can be demonstrated – all of which is the precursor of supporting UK industry.”

College aiming to train next generation of ‘green leaders’ in Wales

A SHARPENED global focus on ethical and sustainable business and industry inspired a suite of health and safety courses at a leading college.

Coleg Cambria’s Northop Business School has launched NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) qualifications to meet demand for a new generation of ‘green’ leaders.

Among them is the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management – one of the first programmes of its kind in the country – designed for aspiring professionals and building directly upon knowledge provided by the NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management.

More and more organisations are opting to create a specific environmental role within their teams, rather than the previous trend of designating relevant tasks to an existing member of staff.

With topical content including the principles and drivers for environmental sustainability, waste minimisation strategies, preventing and controlling pollution, and how to positively influence standards and working practices, Health and Safety Lecturer Peter Laurence says the Diploma is a must for those wanting to progress in this arena.

“In the wake of COP 26 and with climate change and environmental standards at the forefront of people’s thinking more and more, this is the right time to join this flexible course,” he said.

“Whether it be recycling, lowering their carbon footprint, or giving back to the community, most organisations in the private and public sector are adapting their cultures and embracing change.

“This is a pivotal qualification aimed at those who have already completed their Environmental Certificate and are looking to progress, but ultimately anyone responsible for sustainability within a business can join us; it will have a positive impact on their corporate image, and, more importantly, the world around us.”

Celebrating four years since its opening, the £3.5m Northop Business School continues to drive innovation in multiple industries.

It was the first FE provider in Wales to receive a Health and Safety Gold from NEBOSH for the quality and variety of its subjects, notably fire safety, construction and general health and safety.

Business School Manager Lesley Rasmussen said they will continue to develop a curriculum that delivers on an academic level while meeting social and ethical responsibilities.

“There is also the compliance aspect to this, as legislation is evolving, so organisations must anticipate that and be ready to help make a change,” said Lesley.

“Whether that be coming up with campaigns and initiatives for colleagues and customers, or raising standards and learning best practice, there are many aspects to this.

“And it can be completed online or in person; for those who prefer not to travel – which again lowers the carbon footprint – you can do so online.”

The paid Diploma runs over seven months from January and is divided into two units – Controlling Environmental Aspects, and Environmental Regulation.

Record breaking cohort secures best ever results for Welsh leadership programme

AN ACCLAIMED business and management qualification is celebrating its most successful cohort ever.

More than 1,000 senior managers, owners, and directors from across Wales – and 10% of its 300 top firms – have graduated from the 20Twenty Business Growth Programme over the years.

The latest group to complete the course – all based in Flintshire, Wrexham and north Powys – have the best results in its history; 14 delegates on the CMI (Chartered Management Institute) Level 7 received the highest average results in Wales, including seven distinctions.

Among them was Ian Danby, Head of Biodiversity at the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), who scored the best overall marks in the country.

He said the programme – delivered by Bangor University in collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University – gave him a real confident boost.

“20Twenty was a wholly worthwhile experience,” Ian added.

“I went into it wanting to both confirm the skills I had and to develop new ones in areas of business management where my career to date has had less emphasis. The lecturers on the course were a diverse group of seasoned professionals and I really enjoyed it.”

Those studying for the qualification – which has been held online due to the Coronavirus pandemic – attend masterclasses and workshops with some of the leading names in myriad industries, including former BBC Business Doctor, Dr Paul Thomas, Director and Founder of DNA Definitive.

Various themes and topics are covered, and delegates are focused on developing a Strategic Growth Plan (SGP).

With the programme 80% funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through Welsh Government, it has been lauded by alumni for the long-term impact it has had on their businesses, and the relationships forged among representatives from different sectors.

Learning and Evaluation Manager Greg Parry praised the record-breaking group for their achievement and encouraged other company and social enterprise leaders to sign up for the next cohort, which begins in February.

“I took over this role halfway through this latest programme and had the pleasure of reading the delegates’ Strategic Growth Projects,” he said.

“While their grades are brilliant, the biggest impact will hopefully be developing aspects such as leadership, marketing or change management in their organisations.”

Dr Paul Thomas added: “The programme will connect you to a real sense of self and that of human leadership. It will inspire and challenge you to grow, to become a future-fit leader who can take on the complexities of driving modern organisations – well done to those who have achieved such brilliant results.”

For more information and to sign up for the next 20Twenty Business Growth Programme, email j.whittaker@bangor.ac.uk or visit the website: www.20TwentyBusinessGrowth.com.

NOTES: The 20Twenty Business Growth Programme is the only leadership and management course in Wales to offer an optional progression route from CMI Level 4 to CMI Level 7, including a Postgraduate Certificate, an Executive MBA and Chartered Manager Award. The programme is delivered by Cardiff Metropolitan University in partnership with Bangor University and subsidised by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.

Business boom and global partnership for Welsh heating and plumbing firm

HUGE plans are in the pipeline for a North Wales plumbing and heating company which has partnered with a giant of the international sector.
Get Carter UK is expanding into new areas and recruiting engineers after a stellar 2021 saw them increase their client portfolio, including the addition of Italy-based Ariston Group.
Managing Director Paul Carter is now targeting the domestic market after securing major contracts with local authorities and national insurance companies in past years.
The St Asaph firm is about to mark its sixth anniversary, and the 43 year-old plans to celebrate by rolling the service out to new locations, including West Cheshire and the Midlands.
“We have had a lot of success in the commercial sector and want to replicate that on the domestic side,” he said.
“Partnering with Ariston was an absolute no brainer, their approach to future technologies and smart heating systems that can be operated anywhere with internet access is peerless, as is their customer service and sales offering.
“At the heart of this will be our new boiler service plan – in partnership with Ariston – which is already proving popular with homeowners in North Wales; we can only see that developing across the region and beyond.”
Paul added: “We offer three different options at different price levels for affordability, but all of them offer peace of mind for our loyal and prospective customers, including an annual and priority breakdown service.
“Our partnering with Ariston means that should you need a new appliance we can offer full support with the latest technologies, and you should never be with out heat for more than 24 hours, which is a major USP.
“We really want to disturb the market and prove that the local company is a much better option than the national – the customer is at the heart of everything we do.
“That ethos has helped to accelerate our growth since day one and means we can compete with giants of the industry while maintaining a flexible, more personal approach.”
A gas engineer by trade, Paul had put the premise behind Get Carter UK – notably servicing of boilers and renewable energy contracts – to his former bosses at a national heating company.
While agreeing it was a good idea, they felt the time was not right to follow the strategy.
Admitting his dyslexia can prove challenging in dealing with administrative tasks, a determined Paul decided to go it alone, and now the firm employs engineers across Wirral, Cheshire and North Wales, with plans for more staff in the coming months as they look to attract customers over the border.
“At the moment we cover the area from Wirral to Anglesey and down to Aberystwyth on a daily basis,” he said.
“Our plan next year is to expand into the Midlands and West Cheshire, and we are currently recruiting engineers in those areas.
“We will look to take on more corporate clients and mirror the success we’ve had on the commercial side in the domestic market as we move forward.”
He added: “We are coming up to six years in business and it’s been an eye opener, with the biggest issue we’ve had being the scale of growth we’ve experienced, and a lack of support from business agencies.
“When I started, I was honestly happy just driving around in a van on my own doing the work, but I saw opportunities and before I knew it, we are where we are now.
“We work with public sector organisations, insurance companies and other areas, we have an incredible IT system and a fantastic supply chain, as well as the best engineers in North Wales and Cheshire, I wholeheartedly believe that.
“Now we are looking at the domestic market there are going to be further twists and turns and ups and downs as we progress, but that’s the nature of business, and what’s helped us to this point is being flexible and giving customers an end to end service that’s not available elsewhere.
“The plan is to keep working hard and see where the journey takes me – it’s been some ride so far!”

“The way you all handled yourselves in a pressurised, competitive environment was testament to you and the teams around you, especially our brilliant staff.

Welsh nursing in good health thanks to new college-health board partnership

THE future of North Wales nursing is in good health following the development of an innovative partnership between Coleg Cambria and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Sixteen learners from the college’s Yale site in Wrexham are on a two-year placement at the town’s Maelor Hospital. Blending time in the classroom with one day a week on different wards and areas of care, the ‘Nurse Cadets’ have enjoyed the first few weeks of the pilot initiative and are gaining valuable experience alongside trained medical staff. Claire Williams, Cambria’s Curriculum Director for Health, Social Care and Childcare, said the union will give the students a flavour of real-time hospital life and working practices. “Our relationship with the health board continues to go from strength to strength and has provided the learners with a unique opportunity to explore different aspects of healthcare and medicine,” said Claire. “Over the course of the next 12 months they will work in three areas of the hospital; that rotation allows them to specialise in different fields and expand their skillset while finding out which suits them best, which discipline they might like to pursue as a career. “They will then proceed to the second year, where there is the potential to work flexible shifts at the hospital. “It’s a fabulous collaborative effort and I must say a big thank you to lead tutor Stefanie Matthews, who has worked alongside the health board to deliver this, looking after the students and providing enrichment opportunities to prepare them for the placements.” Vicky Edwards, the college’s Vice Principal of Technical Studies, added: “BCUHB have fed into the curriculum and tailored these placements to meet the needs of specific wards and the types of patients they’ll be caring for, so the Nurse Cadets will be learning the same processes on this course they would use in their day-to-day jobs. “That means together we are training the next generation of nurses and helping to meet demand in the sector at a critical time given the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and recruitment nationally. “This first cohort have already immersed themselves in the programme, showing resilience and an appetite to learn and help people – this is the beginning of an exciting journey for them.” Alongside their vocational tasks the learners will study for a WJEC Level 3 Health and Social Care in Principles and Practice, WJEC Medical Science, and the Health and Social Care City and Guilds Level 2 Core Qualification. Gill Harris, BCUHB Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery, said: “As a hospital providing care for local communities, we are delighted to be able to help support and influence the career pathways of the Nurse Cadets. “The Health Board celebrates this step forward in terms of growing the future workforce and fully acknowledge the positive benefits that having the Nurse Cadets working alongside our teams brings to our present patients.” For more information, visit www.cambria.ac.uk or email enquiries@cambria.ac.uk. Estate agent lays foundation for further growth after expansion and record awards win

AN ESTATE agent laid foundations for further growth in the new year after sweeping the board at national awards ceremonies.

Williams Estates was a big winner at both the ESTAS and British Property Awards following a successful 12 months.

Despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the North Wales company – which has sites in Holywell, Denbigh, Mold, Rhyl, Ruthin, Prestatyn and Rhuddlan – recruited six new bilingual staff in past months.

And the 25-strong team had even more to shout about having secured top industry accolades; they won six titles at the recent ESTAS, including their ninth Gold for Best Sales Agent in Wales, and another for Best Estate Agency Group in Wales.

And last week, Williams Estates received Silver for Wales at the British Property Awards, having earlier been unveiled as Gold winner for Denbighshire (Sales) and Flintshire (Lettings).

Director Jason Williams praised his team for their diligence and dedication to customers, a focus which played a major role in them emerging victorious at both ceremonies.

“The customer is at the heart of everything we do, so to have been recognised and rewarded for that is a huge honour,” he said.

“These titles are judged on service, efficiency and there is a mystery shopping element to them over several months, so we have to be at the top of our game to compete with the hundreds of other agencies out there.

“Given the consistently high standards of our staff we have again featured highly and won the Wales-wide ESTAS Gold for the ninth time – and eighth in a row – so that is testament to their hard work and positive attitudes.”

Despite the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, Jason said their early investment in technology and adaptability in the face of national uncertainty enabled employees at all seven sites to continue setting new standards.

“We have expanded to meet demand, and when Covid-19 took hold in the UK were early adopters of innovative methods including virtual video tours,” said Jason, a former President of the North Wales, South Cheshire, and Merseyside branch of the National Association of Estate Agents.

“To this point we have produced more than 800 videos and they have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times so that is something we will look to continue with, though more in-person sales are now taking place.

“The market is in a strong position, with house prices increasing and so much interest, but for us the main target is further improvement in all aspects of the business – that’s our top priority as we approach 2022.”

This year’s ESTAS were held in London, with results calculated from over 200,000 customer review ratings.

TV presenter and host Phil Spencer praised Williams Estates and all of the winners: “You’ve had to work incredibly hard, adapt your businesses and absorb considerable costs to follow the protocols and enable things to happen safely.

“Quite simply, delivering great service has never been more challenging, so the ESTAS Awards for 2021 are the most well deserved ever in their entire 18-year history.”

“Technology has been a great enabler in supporting learning through the lockdown, but it can play an even bigger role in digitally transforming other parts of university operations, from pastoral care and aiding the student journey, through to HR and finance.

“As well as improving business resilience, TechnologyOne’s SaaS ERP can deliver considerable cost and time savings and provide far clearer management insight and we are excited about working with Bath Spa on this important transformation initiative,” he said.

Cancer survivor launches fundraising drive for chemo patients on landmark birthday

A RENOWNED skin clinician who survived breast cancer is marking her 40th birthday with an epic fundraising drive following a “rollercoaster journey” in life and business.

Award-winning aesthetic nurse Sara Cheeney – owner of Pure Perfection Clinic in Rossett, near Wrexham and Chester – will host a charity event in aid of breast cancer research this Friday (November 19) from 10am.

Having endured and overcome her own fight with the condition in her early thirties, the Llangollen mum-of-two has now been cancer free for five years.

Sara wants to give back to the community that supported her, notably during the Coronavirus pandemic.

She herself helped people throughout with free support and advice sessions to prevent skin damage due to self-isolation and rigorous hand washing and sanitising.

“Of course, 40 is a landmark personally, and I truly believe in the old saying that ‘life begins’ because I’ve been through so much, it’s been a rollercoaster journey,” said Sara, who is married to accountant Chris.

“When I was found to have breast cancer at 34 years old, I honestly didn’t believe I’d make it to this age, my whole world was turned upside down, but I did it with the care of so many amazing doctors and nurses.

“Most importantly it’s made me think about how lucky I am to have such a brilliant family and team around me at Pure Perfection, who have been incredible, especially throughout Covid.

“We were closed for a long time, and due the nature of what we do had to open and close several more times, but we have the most loyal clients who were with us all the way – I’ll never forget that.”

The business has again been nominated for Clinic of the Year at the Safety in Beauty Diamond Awards, taking place in December, having also been listed as one of only six Clinical Centres of Excellence by Maili, whose Swiss-developed hyaluronic acid fillers have been designed to reverse signs of ageing.

However, Sara’s number one priority in the run up to Christmas is raising as much money as she can for breast cancer research, particularly groups and services local to North Wales and the North West.

The Pure Perfection team will be joining forces with the Wrexham Maelor Hospital Shooting Star Unit to create STARting bags for patients undergoing chemotherapy, a care package to lift the spirits and support them during treatment.

“We will be holding a day of activities at the clinic, including coffee and cake, a raffle with top prizes to be won, and discounts and offers on treatment for patients, with all proceeds going to this worthwhile cause,” said Sara.

“I will also be hosting a 40th birthday party at The Berwyn Arms in Glyndyfrdwy this Saturday (November 20) with a James Bond Casino Royale theme and charity raffle, so that should also raise plenty of funds for our appeal.”

She added: “I went through endless bouts of chemotherapy and several surgeries while running the clinic and raising two children, so hopefully if anyone out there is struggling, they will use that as inspiration to keep fighting, to never give up.

“I stayed positive and now my life and Pure Perfection are in a wonderful place; cancer made me even more determined and focused, so I will do all I can to help others on that same journey.

“We hope to see people there on Friday, and if you can’t make it, please support our JustGiving page – thank you.”

Booming business and record shop vacancy rates for North Wales town centre

MOLD continues to go from strength to strength and buck national retail trends.

The town centre has seen more than 50 businesses open or expand in the last two years.

And as the area readies itself for the Christmas shopping season, town councillors are proudly reflecting on a vacancy rate of just 5.8% – far below the 14.5% British average.

Mayor Cllr Sarah Taylor pointed to initiatives including the relaunched Totally Mold voucher scheme – 88 traders have signed up so far – and upcoming events such as NovemberFest and the popular Frost Fair as drivers in boosting footfall and customer sales.

“I’m so proud of how the community has got behind its local businesses, and how the businesses themselves rallied throughout the Coronavirus pandemic to continue with their services,” said Cllr Taylor.

“They’ve been creative, resilient and determined to keep going, which is incredible; I hope people will continue to visit them in the run up to Christmas and do their shopping locally, at a time when they really need our support.”

She added: “There are up to 270 shops and companies in the town centre, and when I was elected Mayor, I vowed to go around each one and thank them personally.

“In the coming weeks I will have achieved that aim and hopefully demonstrated on behalf of the residents of Mold how much we appreciate everything they’ve done during these challenging times.”

From barber shops and cafes to hairdressers, restaurants, and food outlets, Mold has witnessed an influx of new firms unlike anywhere else in the region.

The voucher scheme has played a major role in attracting consumers – more than £15,000 was spent with local businesses in the last year – and that looks set to continue now the initiative has been extended to August 31 2022.

Joanna Douglass, Business and Regeneration Officer at Mold Town Council said this, and other upcoming projects, have given the economy a well-timed cash injection.

“The voucher scheme encouraged people to shop locally, and the feedback we received was fantastic, it was so positive,” said Joanna.

“By purchasing the vouchers, you are reinforcing the lifeblood of the town; if every adult in Mold spent just £5 per week in our shops rather than online or elsewhere that would equate to £2m annually for our economy.

“That means more jobs, more opportunities and an even more prosperous Mold – thanks, as always, for your support.”

To purchase Totally Mold vouchers, visit www.totallymoldvouchers.org.uk or go along to the pop-up shop in the Town Hall on Earl Road anytime between 10am-3pm Tuesday to Thursday. Alternatively, call 01352 758532. Expired Totally Mold vouchers can be exchanged for the new, blue version.

For more information including a full list of businesses in Mold town centre, visit the website www.totallymold.org.uk/Business-Listings or email totallymold@moldtowncouncil.org.uk. Alternatively, visit the Totally Mold Facebook page.
