Peninsula Group’s Final Push to raise £2million for Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity

WONDERFUL supporters from the corporate community are gearing up for the final push to reach their £2million fundraising goal.

Staff at Peninsula Group have today announced they have reached the £1.8m mark – and directors are now encouraging the workforce to get behind the last leg of their journey towards hitting the magical milestone of £2m.

Peninsula Group, the UK’s leading HR, employment law and health and safety consultancy firm, pledged to raise £1m for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity back in March 2019. They were moved to make such a generous pledge after hearing about the Charity’s iMRI Appeal.

Then in April 2020, inspired by the hard work and dedication shown by the NHS during the Covid pandemic, Peninsula Group announced they’d be upping this to £2m – doubling their efforts to support the iMRI Appeal.

Peter Done, Group Managing Director and Founder of the multi-award-winning firm, said: “We’re so excited to reach this point in the fundraising pledge – £1.8m is a fantastic milestone and one our employees have worked so hard to raise. We know what a difference it will make to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and the Charity’s iMRI Appeal.

“But while this is a time of celebration at how far we’ve come, it’s also an opportunity to look forward and really get excited about how we will reach our £2million target by December 2022.

“I’ve got a very personal connection with Royal Manchester Children’s hospital and it’s a cause that means a lot to us at the Peninsula Group. It’s been a privilege to meet some of the staff and young patients this money will affect. Hearing their stories and seeing for myself what incredible things the hospital achieves each and every day has really reaffirmed just why we started this fundraising journey in the first place – to make a difference.”

The £5m iMRI Appeal will help the hospital to purchase state-of-the-art intra-operative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (iMRI) equipment which will revolutionise surgical care at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Every year, thousands of children and young people from across the region attend Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital – part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust’s family of 10 hospitals – for specialist neurological treatment.

Sadly, many will require complex brain surgery for a range of debilitating and even life-threatening conditions including brain tumours, traumatic brain injuries, problems with the central nervous system and epilepsy.

The specialist team of children’s neurosurgeons at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital rely on MRI scans taken before surgery to guide them to the area of the brain requiring treatment.  Sometimes a child needs to be scanned during surgery, which means the risky process of moving a child (still anaesthetised on the operating table) out of theatre and through the hospital corridors to be scanned in another part of the building.  Yet it isn’t until another MRI scan is taken after surgery – perhaps days later – that surgeons can see if the surgery was successful, or if any damaged tissue or tumour was left behind and further invasive surgery is needed.

Prof Stavros Stivaros, Director of Neuroimaging at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, said: “It is an acutely distressing process for our young patients and their families to have to go through and for those requiring a second scan after surgery, the wait can be agonising.

“The iMRI will be the answer for all those families and patients. It will revolutionise brain surgery here at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and help us to save even more children’s lives.

“There are number of options being explored as to how this is provided alongside the existing hospital facilities and the Covid pandemic has taught us a lot about how we can provide these state-of-the-art facilities when we are faced with unprecedented healthcare pressures.

“It will mean our surgeons can do all of the scanning while the child is still on the operating table, in a safe sterile environment.

“The new iMRI equipment will mean children need fewer general anaesthetics and potentially fewer surgeries – they could go straight from the scanner into surgery as many times as needed.  Our surgeons would have all the information they need to reach the affected area of the brain, to maximise the removal of the tumour, at the first time of asking.  And their loved ones can rest assured that their child has left theatre only after everything that could possibly be done, has been done.

“We’re so incredibly grateful to Peninsula Group for their ongoing support and I can’t thank each and every staff member enough for the enthusiasm they’ve shown in this appeal.”

Peninsula Group managed to raise a phenomenal £1.8m by encouraging staff to take part in several challenges – including Great Manchester Run 10K and Half Marathon, the Charity’s own Humphrey’s Heroes Abseil, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, interdepartmental football tournaments and skydiving.  Each staff member’s individual fundraising efforts were match-funded by the corporation. The business has also match-funded and sponsored a number of Charity events including Christmas Carols in the City and a special ball held in 2019 to mark the hospital’s 10th birthday of being at the Oxford Road site.

Further funds have been raised in-house with the team organising fun days at the office including dressing up days, bake sales, a static bike challenge in the office and various social events.  Employees have also signed up to make regular donations via payroll giving.

The next events they will be taking part in include the charity’s Christmas Jumper Day and Christmas Carols in the City.

A series of intimate TV ads will follow, featuring pairs of Channel 4 talent discussing their health in frank conversations, starting with Davina McCall and Roman Kemp chatting about their mental health. Running alongside these, AJ Odudu and Alex Brooker will also feature in 10 second pieces to camera, encouraging the nation to engage in conversations about their health.

In the new year the partnership continues on social with a fun vox-pop style 4Studio series where AJ Odudu will take to the streets and quiz the UK on their general health, helping passers-by with those aches and pains they haven’t had a chance to get checked out.

Off-screen, the partnership continues as part of 4Talks, the thought leadership platform from Channel 4’s advertising team, 4Sales, that aims to explore and discuss challenging and thought-provoking subjects across ad-land. Hosted by AJ Odudu, three short videos will be produced in association with Benenden Health to discuss physical health, mental health and menopause.

The creative partnership was brought to life by the Nations and Regions sales team together with MediaCom North, and further developed by the 4Sales Creative Hub alongside Bullion Productions who produced the TV ad and social assets.

Ewan Douglas, Head of Sales & Commercial Development, Channel 4 said: “This creative partnership with Benenden Health is a great example of how brand campaigns can work across multiple touch points within the 4Sales portfolio to increase brand awareness and reach key audiences wherever they’re watching content.

“Developed by our Manchester sales team, with MediaCom North and Yorkshire-based Benenden Health, it’s a true Nations & Regions success story.

“We hope our audiences enjoy seeing some of our much-loved talent talk openly and honestly about their health and encourage more people to do the same to breakdown unnecessary stigmas around important health issues.”

Natalie Walker, Head of Marketing, Benenden Health said: “We’re so proud to be partnering with Channel 4 on what is an exciting initiative to encourage the nation to check in on their health. We’re a healthcare provider that offers something unique, the same affordable healthcare for everyone, and Channel 4’s commitment to diversity and doing things differently make it the perfect media partner for us. We can’t wait to see where the partnership takes the Benenden Health brand, meet the new audiences that will hear our message and, most importantly, see the nation get inspired by the fantastic Channel 4 talent talking about and checking-in with their health.”

Helen Whitley, Client Service Director, MediaCom Leeds said: “We’re thrilled to be on this exciting journey with our client Benenden Health. Having worked with Benenden Health for 14 years, it’s been incredible to see them evolve from a traditionally response-led brand to partnering with Channel 4 on a multi-channel, talent-lead health and wellbeing partnership.

“When we began thinking about the campaign, Benenden Health were already well known amongst their core older audience, but we wanted to grow this even further and let the whole nation know that private healthcare really can be accessible and affordable.

“Working alongside AJ Odudu has allowed us to lean on classic ‘British’ humour to really grab attention and create a purposeful campaign that encourages people to be more proactive about checking in on their physical and mental wellbeing – no matter how trivial it may seem!”

Tredegar pharmacist shares his prescription for a healthier world

A long-serving community pharmacist is doing his bit to put Tregedar and Caerphilly on the global healthcare map.

Simon Nelson, who runs three pharmacies in the birthplace of the NHS, Tredegar –  and another  in Caerphilly –  is one of 27 pharmacists from around the world who have contributed to a new digital book that aims to highlight the changing role of pharmacy and its efforts to create a healthier future for everyone.

The digital book has been developed and translated into 11 languages by Alliance Healthcare as part of  celebrations to mark World Pharmacists Day 2022 which is run by the International Federation of Pharmacists and takes place on Sunday 25th September.

Mr Nelson, who has been a pharmacist for 40 years and is now able to prescribe medications and see patients for individual consultations, said he was delighted to be asked to contribute to the book, adding: “As demand for patient services increases, pharmacy will become ever closer to its patient as pharmacists are able to provide a wider array of services than ever before.

”During the last few years, pharmacy has truly demonstrated its value in keeping the doors open, maintaining health services and being there for the community. It was a big struggle at times and  meant we had to make a lot of sacrifices.

“But it’s important to remember that the future of healthcare starts today, and to improve health outcomes in Wales –  and indeed around the world –  we need to work better together.”

There are currently around 712 active community pharmacies in Wales. Last year (2020/21) they dispensed 81.1 million prescriptions, equivalent to 25.1 items per head of the population. In the same period,  598 pharmacies in Wales provided the seasonal flu vaccine.

Juan Guerra, SVP and Managing Director at Alliance Healthcare, said: “The COVID-19 pandemic saw pharmacists rise to the challenge of becoming a key part of the world-wide response and now, as we emerge into the new world their role is changing. It’s becoming more about offering a complete healthcare service which is seeing more pharmacists offering additional services such as health consultations where they can diagnose and prescribe medication to offering vaccines.

“We are delighted to have been able to celebrate hardworking, dedicated, and innovative pharmacists like Simon who are the backbone of our local communities.

“As a business we’re united in our responsibilities to create healthier futures and we support pharmacists across the globe through our professional networks, which provide support, including, Business Mentors to pharmacists and pharmacies who want to diversify their offering, and via our wholesaler arm which delivers the medications pharmacies need to keep their communities fit and healthy.”

“My ultimate goal is to make Heatherwood Court a flagship hospital in the field of mental health and somewhere that people want to come and work.”

David Lawrence, CEO of Ludlow Street Healthcare, said: “Abigail’s reputation preceded her, she is extremely well respected in the mental healthcare sector and we are thrilled that she chose to join us in this vital role.

Woman who ‘lost hope’ revels in her bright future

Sarah talks candidly ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday, September 10

A young woman who made several serious attempts on her life has paid tribute to a Northampton charity for giving her “meaning and hope”.

Speaking ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day which is on Saturday, September 10, Sarah Coulthard-Evans wants to show others it is possible to look to the future after she was treated at St Andrew’s Healthcare.

The 38 year-old was a patient at the Billing Road hospital a few years ago, when she was admitted to continue her trauma therapy and recovery after a particularly upsetting incident.

She said: “After a number of attempts I can remember waking up afterwards and feeling numb. Soon the guilt kicked in for what I had put my loved ones through. During an impulsive moment I hurt myself further and I was not expected to live.”

Sarah incurred severe burns across her body and spent many months in extreme pain. Whilst at St Andrew’s Healthcare, she received intensive psychological and trauma therapy.

She added: “Not a day goes by when I don’t think about how close I came to losing my life back then. But, I’m so very grateful that I’m still here, living my life. It was a slow journey for me, and at times painful and raw, but St Andrew’s Healthcare helped towards piecing me back together. The staff there made me realise the small beauty there is in everyday life.

“I want to be here. My life has meaning. I have hope for my future. And I really want anyone out there, who right now feels helpless and desperate, I’ve been there. I understand. Please, please, talk to someone and ask for help because there really is a light at the end of your dark tunnel.

“As for the wider community, we all have an important role to play within this controversial topic too. At the moment I think many people think of suicide as being ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’, but the truth of the matter is suicide is just ‘sad’. We may never know what is going on inside someone’s, so my advice is to show everyone compassion and kindness, no matter what.”

World Suicide Prevention Day occurs every year and was created to raise awareness of how organisations and communities can come together to create a world where fewer people die by taking their own lives.”

Sarah is now channelling her lived experience into helping others. Earlier this year she took part in the Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASSIST) programme. She is also training to become a Samaritan.

According to the Office for National Statistics, in 2020 there were 4,912 suicides registered in England.

St Andrew’s Healthcare’s CEO Dr Vivienne McVey, said: “In recent years we’ve come a long way in terms of discussing mental health, but there is still stigma associated with these issues. This needs to change. People who are having suicidal thoughts need to know that if they speak up, they’re not going to be judged. It’s vital we get better at having these conversations so we can start to make a real impact in driving down these figures of people ending their lives.

“As a charity, St Andrew’s Healthcare is constantly trying to challenge the stigma, educate people and promote greater awareness so more people understand the challenges that those who have mental health issues can sometimes face.

“We’re thrilled that Sarah had such a wonderful experience within our care and it’s wonderfully encouraging to hear how full of hope she is for her future.”
