Is York Becoming the Marketing Hub of Yorkshire?

Demand for SEO agencies in York up 100% since last year, with searches for Leeds agencies on the decline

Demand for SEO agencies in York up 100% since last year, with searches for Leeds agencies on the decline

York is emerging as a prime location for marketing agencies in Yorkshire, as revealed by research from Nomada Digital, a York SEO agency. The analysis of Google search data and Companies House records shows a significant increase in demand for local marketing services throughout the region. Yorkshire as a whole has seen notable growth, with an 88% increase in searches for “SEO agency” and a 100% rise in “Marketing agency” queries when comparing August 2023 to August 2024. During this period, York has stood out, recording the highest growth among its Yorkshire counterparts.

Searches for “SEO agency York” have doubled, soaring by 100% over the past year, rising from 70 searches in August 2023 to 140 searches in August 2024. Similarly, searches for “Marketing agency York” have climbed by 27% over the same period, highlighting a growing local appetite for digital marketing services. This surge positions York ahead of other key cities such as Sheffield, which saw only a 24% increase in SEO agency searches, and Hull, where marketing agency searches remained flat at 0% growth.

York’s booming marketing sector sets the pace for Yorkshire

York’s strong online presence is matched by substantial business growth. According to Companies House data, York has recorded the highest year-on-year growth rate for newly registered “active” advertising agencies in Yorkshire since 2021. The city saw an impressive 229% increase in new “active” agency registrations from 2022 to 2023, far outpacing other cities like Leeds (124%) and Sheffield (175%) during the same period.

So far in 2024, York has registered 20 new active advertising agencies, with a projected total of 27 by the end of the year—a 16% increase compared to 2023. By contrast, Leeds, traditionally seen as the region’s marketing powerhouse, is forecasted to experience a 4% decline in new active agency registrations this year, signaling a potential shift in Yorkshire’s marketing landscape.

York poised to become a marketing hub amid regional challenges

Despite the positive growth trends, Yorkshire’s marketing scene has not been without its setbacks. Since 2021, a total of 375 advertising agencies have either dissolved, closed, or gone into administration across the region. This includes significant numbers in major cities like Leeds (108) and Sheffield (97), indicating the challenges that agencies face amidst economic uncertainty.

“A strong local marketing sector is crucial for supporting Yorkshire’s broader business community,” said Danny Sullivan, Founder of Nomada Digital. “York’s growth as a marketing hub means more opportunities for businesses across the region to access top-tier marketing services, which in turn helps them grow and thrive. However, the high number of agency closures highlights the volatility in this sector and the need for careful economic planning.”

Budget concerns loom for Yorkshire agencies

With the upcoming budget causing concern for businesses, local marketing agencies are calling on policymakers to consider the role they play in supporting the broader business ecosystem. A favourable budget could ensure that York’s marketing sector, along with those in other Yorkshire cities, continues to grow and provides the support needed for local enterprises.

“York has the potential to become a real centre of marketing excellence, but it needs the right support to reach its full potential,” Sullivan added. “We hope the upcoming budget will help stabilise and support the sector, allowing agencies across the region to continue delivering value to Yorkshire businesses.”

As York continues to rise in prominence within the Yorkshire marketing landscape, it’s clear that the city is positioning itself as a key player in the region’s business community. With continued investment and support, York could well establish itself as the marketing hub of Yorkshire, offering a vibrant alternative to the traditionally dominant Leeds market.

Highland Hotel Lands Climate Change Action Award

Accolade follows global recognition

A family-run Inverness hotel has received a major Climate change Action award just days after being voted one of the greenest in the world.

The 4-Star Glen Mhor Hotel was judged winner in the Climate Action category at the sell-out Highlands and Islands Thistle Awards on Friday, which honours excellence in the hospitality sector.

The accolade comes on the back of its £8m on-site Sustainability Centre, Climate Action Plan and pioneering Fair Work policies securing a global award at the inaugural World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards in Belize.

Seeking to embed climate- friendly policies across its business model, Glen Mhor’s co-owners decided to build a ground-breaking Energy Centre in 2021 – the first of its kind in Scotland.

Using water from the River Ness for heating and energy, the centre removes 250 tonnes of carbon annually, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels across the 126-room site.

The innovation, supplemented by Solar PV systems, also powers the production of single highland malt whisky and craft beer at its Uile-heist Distillery and Brewery, incorporated on the site at the Glen Mhor.

The Distillery project was the first in Inverness in over 130 years, when it opened in February 2023, and a new quarter cask programme has been released to celebrate the revival of whisky production in the highland capital.

It was these innovations which secured the Climate Action Award from judges and the Glen Mhor will now progress to the Scottish Thistle Awards National final in November.

The hotel plans to be fully gas-free by the end of 2024 and all of its 146 employees now hold individual Green job titles.

Glen Mhor Hotel’s Victoria Erasmus clutches the Climate Action Award and Highland Ambassador Award at the Highlands and Islands Thistle Awards.

“It was very humbling to hear people in the industry acknowledging what we’ve done,” said Glen Mhor Co-Owner and Sustainability Director, Victoria Erasmus.

“When we set out to future-proof our business, with sustainability at the very heart of that, it was tough times. We were building an Energy Centre that hadn’t been built before, in a historic conservation area, as well as a Distillery and Brewery.

“The hospitality world was coping with rising costs, rising energy bills and taxes.

“There were so, so many reasons not to do it but we managed to see it through.

“It was lovely to receive the award and the acknowledgement from our peers within the industry.”

The award ceremony was also a memorable and emotional occasion for Mrs Erasmus, on a personal level, as she landed the Highland Ambassador award for her advocacy for the region on both the domestic and international stage.

“It was a total surprise and it means so much to me,” she said. “I feel very honoured and proud for our teams.”

“Family Comes First”: Priority Number One When Moving Overseas

On this week’s episode of Moving Countries 101, Clare Kay is joined by Gabriella Köves, Hungarian guest who shares her deeply personal journey of moving to Ireland with her husband and children. What began as a tentative 2 to 3-year plan has evolved into 14 years of life in Ireland, where they’ve built a home, formed deep connections with the people and community, all while maintaining strong ties to Hungary.

Gabriella’s story is a testament to the power of family unity. From the outset, she and her husband approached every major decision collaboratively. When her husband first applied for jobs across Europe, securing a position in Ireland marked the start of their new chapter. She remained in Hungary with their children for six months, ensuring that the job was the right fit before the whole family moved. Though they faced the challenges of separation—missing small moments like bedtime stories—the experience strengthened their bond, reaffirming their commitment to staying together as a family.

Moving to a new country came with its complexities. While on the surface, their life seemed “shiny” and full of promise, Gabriella candidly reflects on the need for adaptation. It’s the everyday things, like missing a trusted hairdresser or familiar routines, that often go unnoticed yet require adjustment.

Their family unit, including their three children—two born in Hungary and the youngest in Ireland—has grown even stronger through this journey. The children have seamlessly integrated into Irish life while staying connected to their Hungarian heritage through frequent visits and holidays in Hungary. Supported by their teachers and close-knit school friendships in County Limerick, they’ve thrived, embodying a beautiful blend of both cultures. Decisions, such as buying their home in Ireland and an apartment in Spain, were made collectively, showcasing the strength of their teamwork.

Looking ahead, the couple continues to use their initial 2 to 3-year plan as a guide for making life decisions. They’re now considering a potential move to Spain, eager to explore new cultures and opportunities while leveraging the freedom of EU citizenship and the flexibility of remote work.

Despite the success they’ve found in Ireland, her husband remains on a quest for that elusive missing piece, the same drive that led them to leave Hungary. He has found a creative outlet in developing a game that brings together people of all ages—a passion project that not only fulfills him but also aligns with their shared value of fostering connection.

This episode sheds light on the unseen complexities of moving abroad and the delicate balance required to support each other in marriage through such transitions. Through Gabriella’s reflections as a mother and partner, she demonstrates the significant contributions each person makes to the success of an international move.

Listen to the full episode of Moving Countries 101 to hear Gabriella’s story of balancing life across three homes—Hungary, Ireland, and Spain—and how her family stays connected across borders while embracing their sense of belonging in Ireland.
