South West builders merchant giving tool theft advice following publication of hard-hitting report

Following the publication of a report indicating that four out of five people working in the trades sector have experienced tool theft at an average cost of £4,470 per tradesperson, RGB Building Supplies is giving advice on what can be done to help protect expensive equipment.

The report was commissioned by insurance company Simply Business and On The Tools. Simply Business has been petitioning the government for tighter regulation on the selling of second-hand tools. A Bill proposing a requirement for those selling used tools online to show serial numbers was presented to the House of Commons in April 2021.

Paul Hague, Branch Manager at RGB Tiverton, commented:

“It may sound obvious, but builders, carpenters, roofers, plumbers and bricklayers can’t work without their tools. As the construction industry has by far the largest number of self-employed workers of any sector, being the victim of tool theft can cause a double whammy of a financial hit – tradespeople can’t work, so lose out on the money they need to earn to replace the tools.

“RGB supports the work that Simply Business is doing to improve regulation, but it is yet to come into law. A tradesperson’s tool kit is expensive, so we wanted to help support our customers’ livelihoods by providing advice and highlighting some gadgets that can help to protect against theft.”

Ensure tools are marked

As the report indicated that only 1% of tradespeople recovered their stolen tools, marking tools can deter theft, make it more difficult for stolen equipment to be sold on, and help reunite tools with their owners.

Paul said:

“We have previously worked with Devon and Cornwall Police to hold tool-marking events at RGB branches. They suggested marking the tools with a house number and postcode using a UV pen, by etching, engraving or using a specialist tool-marking kit, which can last for five years.”

Add additional locks to vans

Adding additional deadlocks and hook locks to a van can act as a preventative measure, as they make it harder for criminals to gain access. Deadlocks are extremely difficult to pick because they don’t have springs in the locking mechanisms.

Fit a secure tool safe

Another preventative measure is to install a lockable tool safe in a van. Tools can be locked away in the safe, and as it’s securely bolted to the floor of the van, a criminal cannot simply carry the safe away.

Protect tools with insurance

The majority of insurance companies offer dedicated tool insurance specifically for tradespeople. Whilst the insurance doesn’t stop the inconvenience of being victim of a theft, it does provide peace of mind that the value of a loss will be covered.

Retrofit van alarms

There are a number of van alarm systems on the market, such as the Smart 360 Cube, Van Guardian and Vanolarm, which can be retrofitted. As well as providing an audible alarm when a van is broken into, many use tracking and smart technology to send alerts to mobile phones.

Park a van carefully

It’s wise to park a van in a well-lit area, as this will act as a deterrent, and try to use an area that is covered by CCTV. Tradespeople can also make use of walls and hedges to help block doors from being opened.

Paul Hague concluded:

“We all know that removing tools from a van overnight is perhaps the best theft deterrent. However, thieves don’t just target vans. The report indicated that one in 10 people had tools and equipment stolen from their homes and garages, so we would also suggest adding extra locks and security to wherever tools are stored when they are not being kept in a van.”

Animals benefit from renovated homes thanks to south west builders merchant

As previous winners of RGB Building Supplies’ Surprise Supplies initiative, Woodside Animal Welfare Trust has been able to complete a number of projects and update its animals’ homes.

In February this year, members of the local community voted for the Plympton-based charity to receive £1,000 to spend on materials at RGB in Plymouth

Woodside Animal Welfare Trust is an animal rehoming charity that aims to provide loving new homes for unwanted pets, including dogs, cats, ponies, goats, rabbits, birds, and more. Due to age or illness, some of the animals are unable to be rehomed and remain with Woodside as much-loved residents.

The charity used RGB’s donation to improve the pens where cats who live on the site and those waiting to be rehomed are kept, create a home for its resident turkeys – Paul and Linda McTurkey – and build a home for cats who have trouble mixing with other animals.

Lisa Darcy, Deputy Manager at Woodside Animal Welfare Trust, commented:

“With approximately 150 animals onsite – some that live with us permanently and some that are waiting to be rehomed – we continually have to make costly repairs to our facilities to ensure the animals remain safe and protected. As we rely on donations, this can be a strain, so having the £1,000 from a local company to spend on materials and help us to complete projects across the sanctuary has been a massive help. Thank you RGB.”

Richard Perry from RGB Plymouth visited the charity to learn more about what they had achieved. Richard added:

“Woodside Animal Welfare Trust does a vital job caring for a wide range of animals, and we are big supporters at RGB Plymouth – me and my colleagues have adopted our own family pet from the charity. It was great to return to see how they have benefitted from the £1,000 donation and we will do all we can to support them further in the future.”

Penny Mordaunt MP visits Portsmouth builders merchant to celebrate 175th anniversary year

The Portsmouth depot of Covers Timber & Builders Merchants welcomed Penny Mordaunt, the Conservative MP for Portsmouth North and Leader of the House of Commons, to its depot on Friday 7th October.

Ms Mordaunt was given a tour of the depot by manager Dale Lambourne who explained its operations and products as well as how the business gets involved with community projects and charitable giving. She also met Covers’ Managing Director Henry Green. The Green family has been running the independent business since the 1940s.

William Cover founded the company in 1846 when it began trading in Chichester, and members of the Cover family remained connected to the business until 1989. The company started by selling home grown timber, which was brought to site by horse-drawn wagon. Since then, Covers has expanded to 14 depots operating across the south of England and extended its product offering to include a full range of construction materials. Its values of having a dedicated team and being customer-focused, highly knowledgeable, and independent remain to this day.

Penny Mordaunt MP commented:

“It was great to visit Covers, which is celebrating 175 years in business. It is a wonderful firm that gives back to the community. Congratulations to all and thanks for your support of local causes.”

Dale Lambourne, Depot Manager of Covers Portsmouth, added:

“We’ve worked hard to become one of the leading businesses in the area. We’ve built a loyal customer base and have always encouraged the local community to use us for projects they are completing in their own homes. It was a pleasure to welcome Ms Mordaunt as part of our 175th anniversary celebrations and explain more about the company.”

Inbetweeners star brings back character for South West builders merchant

The Inbetweeners star James Buckley has revived his lovable character Jay Cartwright especially for RGB Building Supplies by voicing the builders merchant’s latest series of radio adverts.

In the adverts Jay is trying his hand as a tradesman and, in typical Jay fashion, there’s plenty of embellished bragging during conversations with his builder ‘fwends’. According to Jay, he got a bargain when he bought a left handed hammer and polystyrene nails from a man on the street, has been asked by the Vatican to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, is taking on the renovation of Big Ben, and he invented the internet.

Kevin Fenlon, CEO of RGB, commented:

“We’d like to thank James Buckley for bringing Jay back for us. He’s such a great character, but maybe not the best builder! We hope everyone enjoys listening to his antics.”

Builders merchant open for business

All branches of RGB Building Supplies are open for business and welcoming all customers.

Those visiting are being asked to respect and adhere to the strict social distancing and general hygiene guidelines that the builders merchant has put in place. These include customers being asked to use the hand-sanitising stations when they enter and leave the branches, make transactions as contactless as possible, and respect the signage and two metre markers that are in the branches, yard and warehouse.

RGB is regularly cleaning all hard surfaces, door handles, work equipment and vehicles, and does have pre-ordered timed collection slots available; further information can be obtained by contacting a branch.

Kevin Fenlon, CEO of RGB Building Supplies, commented:

“We’re delighted to be open and look forward to welcoming all customers through the doors. In view of the social distancing we have in place, there will be a smaller than usual teams, and we thank our customers for their patience and support in helping us to ensure the branches are safe environments for everyone.”

For the time being, RGB is operating revised opening hours of Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. These times will continually be monitored and it is hoping to return to normal working hours when safe to do so.
