Sale of showhome furniture raises more than £30,000 for Cancer Research UK

A Bristol-based housebuilder has contributed over £30,000 to Cancer Research UK, after auctioning off showhome furniture to members of staff.

The money raised came from six separate auctions held by Bellway’s South West division, which is based in Bristol. Items of furniture which had been on display in showhomes at developments across the region were sold to the highest bidder.

Bellway double matched the money raised at the events – leading to a total donated to the charity of £31,211.37.

Cancer Research UK is Bellway’s national charity partner, and the housebuilder has raised more than £1.6 million nationally since 2016 from direct donations and fundraising initiatives.

Rachel Way, Sales Manager for Bellway South West, initiated and organised the charity auctions on behalf of the housebuilder.

Rachel said: “We have held six furniture auctions to date so far and with Bellway’s double price match contribution, we’ve managed to raise over £30,000 for Cancer Research UK, which is amazing.

“During these challenging times charities have struggled to raise money so this was an ideal way for us to help and we intend to continue this initiative whenever this opportunity arises.”

As well as raising money for a worthwhile cause, the auctions also ensure that showhome furniture is reused.

Rachel said: “We buy new and unused furniture for each showhome, so when a showhome closes we look for a way of disposing of the furniture in a sustainable way.

“What better way to recycle the furniture than to offer it for sale via an auction to staff whilst raising money for Bellway’s charity? It is for a good cause and the buzz of each auction within the division is brilliant.

“I take photos of each item, give it a lot number, and prepare a bidding sheet. All bids are collated and the highest bid wins. It is always a great event and the winners get a good product at a good price.”

Bellway South West is currently building new homes in Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, and Gloucestershire.

Housebuilder donates £1,000 to cancer charity

A Cambridgeshire-based housebuilder has donated £1,000 to Cancer Research UK to mark then launch of its newest development in the county.

Bellway Eastern Counties, whose divisional office is in Huntingdon, made the donation as it officially opened the sales office at Bassingbourn Fields, a new development of 100 homes in Fordham, on Saturday 17 October.

Gill Burgess, Local Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research UK East Anglia, was invited to cut the ribbon at the event before accepting a cheque on behalf of the charity from Bellway Sales Manager, Rachael Gatehouse.

Cancer Research UK became Bellway’s nominated charity in 2016, and since then the housebuilder has raised a total of more than £1.6 million across each of its divisions and head office.

Gill said: “We have formed a fantastic relationship with Bellway over the past few years and we are extremely grateful for their continued support. It was a pleasure to cut the ribbon to officially open the Bassingbourn Fields development and, of course, to receive this generous donation, which will help our continued efforts to beat cancer.

“It is no secret that the coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on many charities, including Cancer Research UK, and we are therefore more reliant than ever on the generosity of businesses and individuals to enable us to carry out the vital research which will help to save lives.”

Rhiannon Jones, Head of Sales for Bellway Eastern Counties, said: “We are immensely proud to have Cancer Research UK as our nominated charity.

“Although we fundraise for Cancer Research UK on a regular basis, we were particularly keen to support the charity now, at a time when the pandemic is having such a devastating effect on its fundraising activities.

“Making this donation was the perfect way to mark the launch of our new Bassingbourn Fields development and we were thrilled that Gill was able to attend the event and cut the ribbon on behalf of the charity.”

Located off Mildenhall Road, Bassingbourn Fields will consist of a range of three, four and five-bedroom homes for sale. Customers can book an appointment to visit the sales office and find out more about the homes available by contacting a member of the sales team.

Staff at Bellway step up to the Snowdon challenge for Cancer Research UK

Staff for a Tamworth-based housebuilder have raised more than £7,000 for Cancer Research UK by completing the Snowdon challenge.

The 17-strong team of Bellway West Midlands staff – who work at the division’s office in Tamworth – hiked up the highest mountain in Wales last month (September), reaching its peak at 1,085 metres above sea level in five hours.

Since 2017, Bellway nationally has raised nearly £1.48 million for Cancer Research UK and has been working hard to help increase awareness across the board at all its divisions.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, the housebuilder has been unable to organise many of its usual fundraising events and has been working hard to find different ways to continue to raise money for the charity.

The Snowdon fundraiser was organised by Charlie Bickley, who is working as a quantity surveyor based at Bellway West Midlands, under the Bellway Graduate Programme.
Charlie, 26, said: “I am working as part of a team of eight graduates nationwide who have been tasked with fundraising for Cancer Research UK.

“We were given a brief to raise £5,000 for the charity and I chose the Snowdon Challenge for the team at Bellway West Midlands, as it was easier to follow Government guidelines on social distancing with an event like this whilst safely raising money for the charity.

“Bellway Wessex also walked Snowdon the same day to raise money for the charity, and so far between us eight graduates we have raised more than £13,000.”

Sales Director for Bellway West Midlands, Marie Richards, said: “We are very proud to be supporting a charity that has made a phenomenal difference to the lives of millions of people.

“The team at Bellway is always ready to rise to the challenge when it comes to important fundraising projects, and we have really enjoyed working together for such a worthwhile cause, which is close to so many of our hearts.”
