Device Authority launches KeyScaler Edge to address Edge IoT security challenges

Device Authority, a global leader in identity and access management (IAM) for the Internet of Things (IoT), today announces it latest major software release which includes KeyScaler Edge.

Today’s market is driving a more mature Edge computing model with localized AI and ML becoming more mainstream. However, no solution exists today to address localized Edge gateway IoT security services. Organizations require automation for Edge deployments to drive efficiency at IoT scale. This includes:

– Security lifecycle management
– Device bound identity
– Leaf device authentication and authorization to edge gateways
– Zero touch onboarding and registration
– Automated credential management

Additionally, organizations still need to meet compliance and regulatory adherence for private local network deployments. Safety, confidentiality, data theft/privacy, brand reputation, revenue protection is important for edge deployments.

“We’re delighted to bring KeyScaler Edge to the market and help our customers with their IoT edge deployments. Our BETA program has been a success within healthcare, retail and transport sectors, and we’re regularly speaking with companies who have experienced similar challenges and see KeyScaler Edge as the solution,” said Darron Antill, CEO of Device Authority.

KeyScaler Edge is the first device identity centric IAM to address the complex end-to-end challenges of IoT security lifecycle management at the Edge. It is a lightweight version of KeyScaler that is created specifically for Edge nodes, with the ability to register, authenticate, and provision certificates and tokens to devices in the local network, independent of an available internet connection.

“KeyScaler Edge gives technical, security and operations teams the confidence that their IoT devices won’t lose robust security when no connection to the cloud is available,” said James Penney, CTO of Device Authority. “We’ve developed the functionality to support any public and private CA, as well as provide central reporting and management of all certificates and central visibility of Edge and Leaf node relationships. As Edge becomes mainstream customers are asking for Online and Offline capability and for KeyScaler to solves the associated security challenges,” he added.

RFID pioneer, Omni-ID, appoints Amir Mobayen as Chief Revenue Officer, prepares to scale global IoT offering

Omni-ID, the pioneer of passive industrial radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, trusted by major global organizations for monitoring the location and identity of assets, has appointed Amir Mobayen as Chief Revenue Officer.

Mobayen brings thirty years’ electronics industry experience and has held senior roles with leading RFID vendors, where he has grown international sales in the retail & consumer and industrial sectors. His most recent role was with Smartrac Technology, where he was President of the Transponder Division, with full profit and loss ownership of the RFID division and responsibility for sales, product management and product marketing, sales operations and technology across the Americas, EMEA and APAC.

Commenting on the appointment, Dr Tony Kington, CEO of Omni-ID said, “We are delighted to welcome Amir Mobayen to Omni-ID. He has a strong track record of building and leading international sales operations and developing go-to-market partnerships with leading corporations. His experience, energy, drive and focus on delivering value to customers matches our own. His appointment represents a new chapter for Omni-ID as we enter a very high growth phase and expand our offer to the markets we serve.”

To meet the requirements of its global client base in the logistics, cold chain, pharma, facilities management, distribution, oil & gas and construction sectors, in January 2020 Omni-ID launched its game-changing Sense product range. The Sense Long Range (LoRa) devices include compact batteries lasting for up to five years in harsh and remote environments, transmit signals up to 15km and provide positional accuracy of 3m to 5m when high value assets are moved. The Sense Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices transmit up to 200m and can link to Local Area Network, WiFi, or cellular networks, a cloud, or locally-hosted client application server.  In February 2021 Omni-ID introduced four additional products to its Sense range, including three Quuppa-enabled devices. The company also launched its ‘OmniSphere’ middleware IoT platform, which simplifies data collection, storage and visualization by delivering Sense device data seamlessly to existing corporate systems, or customer applications. This enables rapid technology evaluation and proof-of-concept applications that involve Omni-ID Sense devices.

Commenting on his appointment, Amir Mobayen said, “Omni-ID has methodically built a healthy, profitable business in the industrial RFID space over the last few years and offers a strong solution approach enabling partners to create their own tracking and sensing applications. There is an opportunity to build on the recent launch of the Sense IoT range to create intelligent devices that provide organizations with real-time data to guide business decisions. With a strong management team, and multi-regional talent base, a shared global strategy and the right partnerships, we can scale this early success and deliver significant results for our customers and partners.”

Innovative wireless sensor could boost security for farmers and rural landowners

A REVOLUTIONARY wireless sensor launched by a Welsh tech start-up will make the ‘Internet of Things’ possible for rural areas across the globe.

Innovative Dewin Open:Close technology has been unveiled by Dewin Tech, a new business founded by Geraint Hughes and Meinir Lloyd Jones.

The couple, from Bangor, have collaborated with Dr Rob Shepherd from EvoMetric sensor data solutions to launch the application, with an initial focus on agriculture, utilities, and environmental sectors.

Based at Menai Science Park (M-SParc) on Anglesey, they are confident the remote notification device – which can be mounted to gates, doors, buildings, or any surface that has an open-close function – will provide both peace of mind and great value to customers.

Geraint, whose background is in agri-food consultancy, said: “There are so many scenarios that will benefit from the product across Europe, but for now we are concentrating on the UK and in particular the public sector and land-based sites.

For it to work the solution needs to have LoRaWAN network coverage (Long Range Wireless Area Network) which is becoming more extensive, so the infrastructure is in place for us to deliver this and for it to be a success.

“Importantly, this will make a huge difference to people’s lives because from wherever they are they can access the solution at their fingertips, and immediate notifications will let them know if, for example, a door or gate is open that shouldn’t be – particularly crucial for a farmer or landowner.”

Through the use of LoRaWAN, the system covers a wide area using low levels of power, and enables the customer to be elsewhere knowing the Open:Close application is fully operational and effective.

If there is an issue, a notification will be sent via text, telegram messenger, or email tailored specifically to their requirements.

And if there is no LoRaWAN network available, a gateway can be installed by Dewin Tech to provide coverage.

“Local authorities in Wales have been investing in LoRaWAN, which permits long-range connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as this,” said Geraint.

“An external LoRaWAN gateway can be bought and professionally installed for around £1,000-£1500.

“We have looked at all aspects of the hardware – which has been developed to withstand anything from the harshest of weather to rodent damage – and it is so straightforward to install we send it out with a simple guide after an initial consultation.

“From that point on we are there to ensure there are no issues and offer support, while monitoring the software and updating the technology in future if required.”

He added: “This is a game-changer for so many sectors, the application is incredibly advanced and we are proud to have got to this point and launched the business.

“It may be a bold move given we are in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, but we believe this will be well received, and the feedback we’ve had already is very positive.

“We have so much talent and innovation in North Wales and this is an example of that, and there is more to come – this is just the start for Dewin Tech.”
