Fast-growing kombucha brand slashes prices by up to 50% to support customers during cost-of-living crisis

Functional drinks brand, Hip Pop, has dramatically reduced product prices for the foreseeable future, following their recent Black Friday sale.

Putting customer happiness at the forefront of their business, the Manchester based brewers have cut prices by up to 50% on their award winning kombucha and apple cider vinegar infused beverages.

As well as supporting their customer base, Hip Pop have also increased their partnership with Manchester homelessness charity, Lifeshare, by donating one meal for every 24 cans sold.

In October 2022, the annual rate of inflation reached 11.1%, putting cost-of-living in the UK at a 41 year high. The crisis has affected affordability of goods and services for households, with growing concerns for further inflation during 2023.

With factors such as the rising cost of goods, underpinned by consumer demands and supply-chain bottlenecks, food and energy prices have risen sharply throughout the last year, partially due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

In order to support new and returning customers, Hip Pop made the decision to keep their reduced prices following a successful Black Friday sale, ensuring consumers can still enjoy their products without worrying about higher prices. Whilst a case of 24 x 330ml cans previously cost £49.99, it is now £29.99 with free UK mainland delivery.

Kenny Goodman, co-founder of Hip Pop, said: “As a small business, our customers are extremely important to us, and we want to show our support during the cost-of-living crisis wherever we can.

“While many brands have decided to raise their prices to offset supply chain demands, we have taken steps to reduce ours. For example, we have made more sustainable changes to our packaging, which have allowed us to keep costs low for consumers during these difficult times.

“We want to ensure new and returning customers can continue to enjoy our products without worrying about rising costs, while increasing our partnership with Lifeshare to support those less fortunate.”

Launched in 2019, Hip Pop as grown substantially over the last 12 months, not only in the UK, but also on a global scale. Their functional drinks are now available in 42 of 50 American states, as well as in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Oman.

Now employing a growing team of 16, Hip Pop has received many accolades, including two stars at the Great Taste Awards, and Independent Drinks Producer of the Year at the renowned Manchester Food & Drinks Festival earlier this year.

Taylors Solicitors advises iconic sailing brand Henri-Lloyd on its sale to ODLO

A Switzerland-based performance brand is to acquire iconic UK sailing and lifestyle brand Henri-Lloyd Group.

A team at north west law firm Taylors Solicitors has advised the owners of Henri-Lloyd on the sale to ODLO, a specialist sport and outdoor clothing brand which is owned by Monta Rosa Capital.

The acquisition, for a substantial undisclosed sum, is expected to be completed shortly.

Taylors’ team of advisers was led by corporate partners Andrew Livesey and Matthew Catterall and the firm’s head of commercial property, partner John Lomax.

Andrew said: “Henri-Lloyd is an iconic British brand, and we are delighted to have been able to work with the business over the past few years, culminating in the current deal with ODLO.

“It is a pleasure and a privilege to be associated with such a dynamic business and team of individuals, and a brand that is instantly recognised worldwide. This was a particularly pressurised deal, with a substantial amount of detail to be dealt with in a short timescale.

“There were plenty of early starts and late finishes, with all of the professional team fully focused on the task in hand.”

Taylors advised Henri-Lloyd when it last changed hands in 2018, when the brand and valuable assets were acquired out of administration by a group of investors led by Hans Eckerström with the aim of re-establishing the company as the premier brand for yachtsmen and sailors around the world.

Henri-Lloyd was established in Manchester in 1963 and has 85 staff in its UK retail business.

Hans Eckerström, chairman of Henri-Lloyd, said: “The acquisition of Henri-Lloyd by ODLO opens up tremendous opportunities for the brand to reach its true potential to the benefit of all shareholders, both current and future.

“Joining a family of successful companies that share values and goals will accelerate our growth. Most importantly that journey will be based on quality, innovation and striving for sustainability – principles that the Henri-Lloyd team hold dearly.”

Henri-Lloyd was founded by Henri Strzelecki, who set out to create the world’s best and most durable waterproof clothing. He created several world-firsts within technical clothing that have today become industry standards, including seam taping garments for waterproofing and the invention of the nylon non-corrosive zip.

The Henri-Lloyd team will continue to be located in Manchester, and will collaborate with the ODLO group in the development of the brand and a new generation of innovative products.

ODLO chairman Hugo Maurstad said: “We are excited about including Henri-Lloyd into our family of brands. It is an iconic brand with a proud history. Together we aspire to further expand its product range and geographic footprint.

“Henri-Lloyd and ODLO are both companies that originated from technical innovations in outdoor sport apparel and they will complement each other going forward.”

ODLO chief executive Knut Are Høgberg said: “By leveraging ODLO’s comprehensive infrastructure, we can concentrate investments towards the Henri-Lloyd brand and its customers while progressing on the ambitious sustainability agenda of all brands within ODLO International.

“We warmly welcome the Henri-Lloyd team to the ODLO family and look forward to working together going forward.”

Rise in used car sales – experts reveal what to look for when buying

Second-hand car demand is nearly 50% higher than it was pre-lockdown, but when you’re looking at used vehicles, there are a few key things that you need to be aware of, and it can make the difference between bagging a bargain or a banger.

For that reason, online car parts provider, Euro Car Parts has outlined the top five things to look out for when buying a used car.

1: Full service history

A car is designed to be maintained at regular intervals. If this is done well and by reputable and qualified people, a car can last for several years. There are still a few motors driving around from the 1960s out there, and the chances are that unless they were put together using magic, it’s because they’ve had regular servicing carried out by specialists.

A car that hasn’t had a full history of servicing is likely to have developed additional wear and tear. Now, you might be lucky, and it might not be anything that can’t be fixed, but when you are spending your hard-earned money, you probably want to be sure the car is in good condition. After all, if the engine drops out one month after purchasing, that’s going to cost you a pretty penny to repair.

2: A good length of time until its next MOT

It doesn’t seem crucial but think about it – most people know when their car is going to fail its MOT. If a vehicle is out of MOT or only has a few weeks remaining, there is a good chance that the person selling that car knows full well that it won’t pass or has significant issues that are going to cost them a lot to fix. A short MOT should set off alarm bells because there’s a possibility it means that something is being covered up.

If a used car has a long MOT, it’s a reason to have confidence in it, and it also gives you a little extra time to put some cash aside to cover the next one.

3: Check the advert

Before viewing a car, the chances are you’ll know if it’s priced fairly because you’ll have been looking at similar ones. If you turn up and view a car covered in scratches that has been described as “a fabulous example” then you are well within your rights to ask for a discount. Additionally, checking the specification of the car against what was advertised is just as important, particularly as cars are becoming complicated beasts with more gadgets and toys than a smartphone. Ordinary folk – and even some professionals – can accidentally advertise the wrong specification, so it’s something you should really be aware of.

Note: this also applies to the paperwork and documentation. Check that what has been promised is all present, so you don’t get any nasty surprises further down the road.

4: Always test drive the car

This is really important. During a test drive, there’s going to be several things you’re going to want to check. The engine, the gearbox, the interior gadgets, the handling, the brakes, the feel of the car during cornering, the way it drives on several different types of roads. A proper test drive should take at least an hour and is ultimately the most important part of the viewing.

Certain signs that there could be a major issue include blue smoke from the exhaust, which indicates that the car is burning oil and the head gasket is about to blow – often a terminal condition for many vehicles.

If you need to put your foot deep into the clutch pedal to change gears, that could mean that the clutch needs replacing. Uncomfortable and unpleasant knocking and banging could signify any number of problems and unpredictable or unnatural movements during acceleration or braking should be immediate cause to walk away from a vehicle – for your safety, more than anything else.

5: The condition of the interior

Checking the state of the interior is often the best way to tell how much a car has been driven. The mileage count on many vehicles can be altered, and it’s an infamous problem on the used car market.

Assess the seating for excessive wear around the edges and the quality of frequently pressed buttons and knobs within a car. Pay particular attention to the steering wheel, if it’s shiny in places where hands would usually rest, that could be a sign that this car has spent a long time with somebody in it. The clock can lie, but the condition of that interior space certainly won’t!

Buying a used car can be stressful, but with these tips, hopefully you’ll be armed with extra knowledge and feel more confident. Remember, getting a new car (fresh off the lot or not) should be an experience to enjoy, particularly if you’re going for something you’ve always wanted! So, take your time, check everything that you can and learn about the car that you’re interested in buying. If you follow these pieces of advice, you’ll end up with a car you can be proud of.
