Christ College Brecon Opens its Doors

Christ College Brecon – one of the oldest schools in Wales – is opening its doors to prospective pupils and their families on Saturday, March 25th. Christ College was founded in 1541 by Henry VIII and is consistently named in the Sunday Times’ top private schools guide. The independent co-educational boarding and day school is rated “excellent” across all five Estyn inspection categories and 46% of pupils achieve grade 9-7 (A-A*) GCSE results with 47% going on to receive A-A* in their A Levels.

Research: workforce and company learning needs don’t align

  • Nearly half of employers think their employees want leadership training; yet just 32% of employees say they want it
  • 46% of employers think their employees want to learn digital skills, yet just 28% actually do
  • 28% of employees want teamwork and management skills, while 42% of employers think their employees want this
  • Mismatched skill goals indicate serious underlying issues for employers and employees

Employers are failing to clearly communicate their company vision and understand the learning needs of employees, according to a report from GoodHabitz, the digital learning provider. Its research shows that 49% of UK employers think their employees want to take leadership training, for instance, yet only 32% of employees agree. In another example, 28% of employees want to learn about digital skills yet 46% of employers believe employees want to learn about this capability.

GoodHabitz surveyed 13,000 employees across Europe, with over a thousand in the UK. The research also included views of over 2,600 senior learning and development decision-makers, with over 400 in the UK.

The aim of the research was to uncover beliefs from employers and employees about personal development. It asked UK employees about the skills and capabilities they wanted to develop and for comparison, asked employers what they thought employees wanted. The results showed that, across all skills and capabilities, employers believe their workforce wants particular training programmes more than they actually do..

Tim Segers, UK Director of GoodHabitz, said:

“The mismatch we are seeing in our research indicates a serious underlying issue for employers and their employees. Training decision makers – HR, Learning & Development and business owners – identify the need for certain skills based on goals and objectives of the organisation. Yet if employees don’t find those skills or capabilities important to pursue, or if they are missing the ‘why’ or a growth mindset, it creates a disconnect.

“Indeed, employees who don’t engage with learning offers may see career progression affected. This skills gap might not be uncovered until annual reviews are done, leaving employees in a place where they haven’t achieved the objectives set for their specific roles. Our research also found that 70% of UK employees agree they would be happier in their current roles if they had further personal development opportunities.”

When identifying the areas where employees want to develop themselves further, digital skills, teamwork and management, communication and language, as well as Excel courses stood out the most. The report shows that the difficulty lies in clearly distinguishing between what employees want to learn and what they need for their actual job role and career progression.

When thinking about the approach organisations must take to bridge the learning gap, Segers explained:

“The employer might need to refresh. Getting employee buy-in to the organisation’s and their department’s vision and mission can bring a great alignment of training needs. If learning new skills is not a priority for the organisation, then it is unlikely to be taken seriously by the employee.  Learning must be prioritised by both the employer and employee for learning to flourish – and to be pursued by both entities they must want to move ahead in the same direction.”

Swansea Building Society celebrates its 100th birthday by giving £40K boost to Mumbles Park development

Swansea Building Society has donated £40,000 to Mumbles Community Association’s Go Underhill development in the same week the building society celebrates exactly 100 years trading.

The building society, with branch offices in Mumbles, Swansea, Carmarthen and Cowbridge, made the donation on February 6th – the day after its 100th birthday – to further help Mumbles Community Association (MCA) redevelop the facilities in Underhill Park.

The Go Underhill development is a major multi-phase project to redevelop and refurbish the much-loved Underhill Park in Mumbles. It aims to protect and enhance the asset with up-to-date facilities fit for the 21st Century, which can be enjoyed by the local community and visitors to the area.

This most recent donation by Swansea Building Society follows one for £10,000 made in 2022 to help fund the completion of two additional changing rooms, which had originally been omitted from the contract let due to budget limitations.

The latest £40,000 boost has been warmly welcomed by Mumbles Community Association – a registered charity – to help it continue its plans to redevelop the site across several phases. The initial £2 million phase 1 commenced at the start of 2022 and includes the refurbishment of the pavilion with new public toilets, new changing facilities for sports teams, new facilities for the disabled, and a new community hub and café.

The project has also recently secured funds from Sport Wales and Swansea City Council, which will go towards the final element of phase 1 of the project – a £1.1 million all-weather pitch.

Once this first stage of the development is completed, MCA will then take on management of the park and the new facilities under a 125-year lease and will work with existing and potential users to create more opportunities for the community.

Swansea Building Society was founded as a mutual Building Society on February 5, 1923. The Society’s principal objective has always been the provision of loans secured on residential property for the use of customers – particularly in the South Wales area. These loans are funded by personal savings deposited in a variety of savings accounts offered by the Society. The Society is one of only three remaining mutual Building Societies in Wales and the only Building Society or Bank with its headquarters in West Wales.

The International Institute of Information Technology – Hyderabad Shares Digital Innovations with Nonprofits via Choreo from WSO2

IIIT Hyderabad uses the Choreo SaaS application development suite to provide “one-stop-shop” access to digital research projects that non-profit organisations can productise for their communities

 

The International Institute of Information Technology – Hyderabad (IIIT Hyderabad) collaborates with leading technology organisations to innovate new solutions that benefit nonprofits in education, healthcare, and other sectors serving the public. Recently, IIIT Hyderabad began using Choreo, a software as a service (SaaS) application development suite from WSO2, to simplify and streamline the delivery of its digital innovations to these nonprofits.

Based in Hyderabad, India, the institute conducts information technology-related research, productises these research projects by wrapping them with APIs, and then makes them available to the public for free. Recent examples include using interactive voice response (IVR) applications to help underprivileged students and patients get answers to their questions using either their mobile or landline phones. In addition to developing new technologies within its research centers, IIIT Hyderabad also collaborates with other organisations—from start-ups to leading corporations—to create new digital solutions.

Initially, IIIT Hyderabad used WSO2 API Manager to make research projects available via standardised APIs. However, following the general availability of Choreo in 2022, the institute saw an opportunity to take advantage of the cloud-based solution’s additional capabilities.

“We realised that Choreo had all the features of WSO2 API Manager and more,” recalled Khoushik Ananth, lead engineer at IIIT Hyderabad. “We also saw an opportunity to move to the cloud and simplify our efforts by shifting responsibility for maintaining the infrastructure to Choreo.”

In the first few months since going into production, more than 15 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have accessed productised research projects from IIIT Hyderabad through Choreo. The Choreo Marketplace included with the suite allows these nonprofits to easily find and access the APIs for a given project from a/ single location even if a project uses technologies from multiple organisations. The result is a seamless experience for users. Ultimately, the goal is to make research projects available through Choreo to all of the 200-plus nonprofits working with IIIT Hyderabad.

“Using Choreo and the Choreo Marketplace, we are providing a one-stop-shop where nonprofits can access APIs to applications and services without having to know which organisations they come from,” says Khoushik Ananth. “It is one more way that IIIT Hyderabad makes innovative technology solutions readily accessible to nonprofits, so they can better support the communities they serve.”

Prakash Yalla, IIIT Hyderabad technology transfer officer (TTO), adds, “Choreo also automates API documentation, single sign-on, and management of the underlying infrastructure. This has freed up our team to focus on making new solutions available faster.”

Rosie Boddy, an Aero Systems Craft apprentice at Airbus, is now advocating for more women to consider a career in STEM subjects like aerospace engineering after her four-year training.

Her love for aerospace came from her grandfather, who was a design engineer apprentice for Hawker Siddeley and then British Aerospace.

She’s now eager to inspire others to follow their career passions through apprenticeship opportunities in engineering, after moving from Farnborough, known as the home of aerospace, to Wales to join Airbus.

 

Rosie said: “My grandad’s passion for aircraft rubbed off on me from an early age. I grew up at the home of aviation and spent much of my weekends going to air shows and discovering the engineering side of the industry.

“I went on to study aeronautical engineering at college and absolutely loved my time there, so I began to look at my next steps.

“I knew that Airbus in Flintshire is one of the best places to work in the industry, so when I saw the apprenticeship opportunity come up, I made the big decision to move to Wales and my apprenticeship journey began!”

 

Rosie, now in her fourth and final year based on the site, has especially benefited from the hands-on learning during her apprenticeship.

 

She added: “I’ve absolutely loved the practical side of my course and getting stuck in with my hands. It’s been particularly helpful to put the theory I learned at college into practise by working with the plane parts in real life.

“I’ve found each skill I’ve learned during my apprenticeship rotations to be transferable, with time management and learning to work under pressure being skills that I’ve carried across my four years in the production environment.”

 

Rosie also found her experience working under pressure useful when competing in the WorldSkills UK National Finals last November, where she came away with a Gold medal in the Aircraft Maintenance category.

WorldSkills UK sees competitors from all four nations compete against one another in their chosen skill category to achieve national recognition.

 

She said: “Competing at WorldSkills UK made me realise just how many skills I had developed, but it also helped me build my knowledge base and expand my horizons.

“When I won Gold, my family and employer were so proud of me, and it just boosted my confidence in my apprenticeship even further. It just goes to show how invaluable my apprenticeship experience has been, with me now being the best in the UK at my skill!”

 

While Rosie’s grandad’s apprenticeship was a big reason for her choosing a similar path, it wasn’t her only plan.

 

She continued: “When leaving college, I had to really weigh up the benefits of going to university versus choosing an apprenticeship.

“After careful deliberation, I chose to do an apprenticeship and have never looked back. In engineering, especially, apprenticeships are a great way to break into the industry and develop quickly due to the hands-on nature of the job.

“My apprenticeship has helped me get ahead in my career and learn from the many different talented people in the industry who work around me.”

 

Rosie is also a big advocate for getting more women into male-dominated industries like aeronautical engineering and believes the balance is beginning to shift.

 

She said: “While aeronautical engineering is often perceived as a very male-dominated industry, the gender split and stigma around women in STEM is nowhere near as bad as it was when my grandad was doing his apprenticeship.

“I’ve been so grateful that during my apprenticeship at Airbus, women working within the company is commonplace that I haven’t even needed to think about it.  This is how it should be, in my opinion.”

 

Rosie’s sights are now set high, with her also considering a future degree in aerospace engineering, all thanks to the passion she has developed for the subject during her apprenticeship.

 

She continued: “I’m so grateful for my apprenticeship experience and all it has taught me. Now that it’s coming to an end, I feel experienced and ready to enter the working world as a qualified systems fitter on the Airbus shop floor.

“If I were to give one piece of advice to young women looking to get into aeronautical engineering, it would be don’t let the thought of it being a man’s field discourage you, because that is definitely not the case. There is nothing stopping you, just follow your passion and dedication to the industry and you’ll be sure to succeed.”

Berlinale International Film Festival brings Asian filmmaking talent to Berlin with Colt’s international fibre optic network and on-demand service

Filmmakers from Asia can deliver their films to the festival through a digital hub in Singapore, as Colt is Official Digital Cinema Partner for the 15th consecutive year

Colt Technology Services, the digital infrastructure company, announced that the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival – the Berlinale – is using its international fibre optic network and on-demand service for the first time for the delivery of film contributions from Asia, via a hub in Singapore. This enables film producers from the APAC region to transfer their work to Berlin faster and more securely. The service supports Berlinale’s strategy to make it as easy as possible to upload contributions from around the world, especially where stable bandwidth capacity is a challenge. The digital infrastructure integrates Colt’s existing High Bandwidth Service, a direct line between Berlinale servers and the DE-CIX central Internet hub in Frankfurt, which studios around the world use for uploads.

Filmmakers from the APAC region upload their work via the Internet to a server at the partner data centre in Singapore. From there, Colt establishes an end-to-end on-demand connection via Ethernet between the data centre and the Colt node in Berlin, where the Berlinale’s film servers are located. For this purpose, the Berlinale cinema technology team commissions a DC Cross Connect in the data centre in Singapore via Colt’s on-demand portal, which connects the server with the Colt end device. The Berlinale uses the “Bandwidth Boost” function to transfer the data. This allows the bandwidth capacity to be flexibly scaled between 10 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s according to demand. Data rates of up to 10 Gbit/s are possible with the “Boost” option.

“It is important to us to make delivery as easy as possible for film producers and to create a level playing field. Producers have more time to film, and we have more flexibility to respond to potential film file issues. As the Official Digital Cinema Partner of the Berlinale for 15 years, Colt has provided network services with high bandwidths of up to 10 Gbit/s and Internet access to enable the transmission and distribution of film data from Colt’s network node in Berlin to the 20 venues with 47 screens in the highest quality. By connecting to Colt’s on-demand portal, Berlinale can also increase or decrease the bandwidth of individual connections itself in near real-time. In addition to the technological advancement of digital cinema, Colt is also driving innovations in its own fibre network at the Berlinale, such as – most recently – quantum-based encryption.

Colt has a special connection to the Berlinale and the capital itself: Colt has laid around 1,900 kilometres of fibre in Berlin and Potsdam. A total of around 2,600 company buildings are connected. Colt also supports the gigabit strategy of the state of Berlin and will connect a further 350 commercial customers by 2025. Colt is also working with the Berlin Broadband Portal, a Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Operations initiative through which companies can register their bandwidth requirements. Berlin also plays an important role in Colt’s network expansion into Eastern Europe. The German capital is part of a network ring that includes Warsaw, Krakow, Brno, Prague and Dresden.
