Over 1,000 learners completed a qualification with ‘excellent’ rated Educ8 Training Group

Educ8 students of 2022-2023 have celebrated their graduation in the iconic Llancaicah Fawr Manor in Caerphilly. Students were invited on stage to recognise their achievements alongside friends, family, and Educ8 staff.

Jude Holloway, Managing Director at Educ8 Training Group, said: “This year’s Gradu8 Ceremony was as fantastic as ever, and it is always a joy to applaud our graduates for their hard work and recognise their achievements.

Graduation is an opportunity to not only celebrate our brilliant learners, but also an opportunity to highlight just how valuable a vocational qualification is and that learning can be a lifelong and continuous process.

In the last academic year, Educ8 Training Group has supported more than 1,000 learners to complete their qualifications, with 93.75% of students describing Educ8 as an ‘excellent’ learning provider.

The morning and afternoon ceremonies celebrated the graduates from some of Educ8’s core disciplines, such as Customer Service, Business Administration, Leadership & Management, Marketing, Social Media, Health & Social Care, Hair & Beauty, Equine & Animal Care, and more.

Speaking on what her apprenticeship has meant for her, Sammy O’Brien, a HR Manager at Protectorcomms who graduated from Business Admin Level 4 this year, said: “I already had the experience and knew how to do my job, but studying an apprenticeship with Educ8 Training meant I had a formal qualification and recognition for my work. Being able to graduate was amazing. It’s great that Educ8 offers the chance to celebrate through a graduation ceremony. It was a wonderful day and made me feel proud of what I had achieved.

Educ8 Training Group continues to innovate in its training and education provision, having just this year launched a new Energy and Carbon Management apprenticeship with support from the Welsh Government, introduced a new apprenticeship in Equestrian Sporting Excellence through Haddon Training, and pioneered new VR training for hairdressing apprentices from ISA Training in collaboration with CEMET.

Championing learning in all forms and for all ages, Educ8 Training Group has also witnessed a marked increase in apprenticeships in 2023, where rising tuition fees and the need for upskilling while working are seeing more people choose an apprenticeship as a practical route to qualification.

Susan Billington, National Account Manager at Educ8 Training Group, said: “Apprenticeships offer fantastic career opportunities allowing learners to earn while they learn. Learners can avoid accumulating massive debt while at the same time equipping themselves with practical skills and industry connections.”

Apprenticeships are an excellent method for business growth, providing incentives such as the Employer Incentive Scheme (EIS) that helps to support learners who have a disability into the world of work, as well as maximising value through cutting-edge knowledge and skills.

Whether you’re a young person wanting to take their first step on the career ladder and gain invaluable practical experience in a field you’re passionate about, you want to take your career in a new direction, or you are looking to build on the skills you already have to progress your career, Educ8 Training Group is a fantastic place to gain all the qualifications you need.

It’s never too late to learn and start a new, exciting career journey. If you are interested in studying a qualification with Educ8, visit www.educ8training.co.uk.

Unlocking Opportunities: Celebrating Adult Learner’s Week 2023

Every year, thousands of learners and training providers join the celebration of Adult Learners’ Week, Wales’ biggest festival of adult learning. The campaign aims to promote Welsh Government’s vision to establish Wales as a “Second Chance Nation” for lifelong learning.

Educ8 Training Group, an award-winning further education provider, invited three learners to share their success stories as adult learners during Adult Learners’ Week which is taking place between 18th – 24th September in 2023.

Apprenticeship helped me make a bold career move

Sophie Evans, a Level 3 Hairdressing apprentice, tells us why she decided to take a leap of faith and dive into a career she truly loves.

“It was very weird going from being a manager in my previous role, to starting again as an apprentice. I didn’t mind it because I felt excited to do something that I was passionate about. I was interested in hair; I wasn’t interested in anything else.

“Doing an apprenticeship later on in life can be scary. You’ve got rent and bills to think about. But with the support I’ve had from my manager, my partner, and Liz my trainer coach, I know I made the right decision.” says Sophie.

ILM apprenticeship provided a boost in my career progression

Nathan Doe, a Senior Timetable Production Manager for Transport for Wales, shares how the ILM apprenticeship helped him build a career without a university degree.

“I came straight out of school and into a job. A lot of people went to university to get a degree, so not having one myself was a worry. The ILM Level 5 is equivalent to a foundation degree, which would be two years at university, and I’ve done it without spending a penny – earning more than I would’ve paid for.

“The course is orientated around your job. Each person who does an apprenticeship will get something different out of it. The beauty of it is funding. I was able to buy my first house at the age of 20. I made a career for myself.”

Learning new skills gave me the confidence to go back to work

Level 2 Beauty Therapy apprentice, Alice Evans, shares how her learning enabled her to return to the job market  after becoming a new mother.

“My new employer was really encouraging. She gave me the boost I needed to study Level 2 Beauty Therapy and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. My job is part-time and my employer is flexible; working around me and looking after my 16-month-old baby girl, Amelia.  The course is not intense, and you know what to do – it’s really well organised. You have an online module on Moodle and everything else takes place in the salon. All practical and done during work hours.

Adult Learner’s Week highlights the remarkable journeys of our adult learners and the life-changing opportunities education can provide. Educ8 Training Group is committed to supporting these learners in their pursuit of new careers and enhanced skills. This week reaffirms that age is no barrier to achieving professional and personal goals.

Rising university tuition costs drive up apprenticeship demand

Rising university tuition fees and living costs have made more school leavers consider apprenticeships. In 2023, a remarkable 430,000 students expressed their interest in apprenticeship opportunities via UCAS—a staggering 180% increase since 2021.

Susan Billington, National Account Manager at Educ8 Training Group, shares insights on the changing landscape of further education for school leavers.

“An average student debt for tuition fees alone is £27,750 for a three-year degree. Cost consideration is a big part of decision-making for school leavers and their parents and the shift is more apparent with rising inflation and living costs.”

She continues, “Apprenticeships offer fantastic career opportunities allowing learners to earn while they learn. Learners can avoid accumulating massive debt while at the same time equipping themselves with practical skills and industry connections.”

An impressive 91% of apprentices go on to secure employment or further their studies after completing their training.

“There is not enough awareness about apprenticeships to young people leaving school. My apprenticeship has helped my confidence so much already. My advice to young people would be – if you want to earn a wage while learning, an apprenticeship may be what you need. I would recommend more young people leaving school to consider an apprenticeship.” Says Eleri Page who is a Social Media for Business Apprentice with Educ8 Training Group.

As salary growth lags behind inflation and the cost of living rises, many employees are opting to enhance their skills via apprenticeships, which paves the way for improved career prospects.

“I joined Educ8 Training Group as an Account Manager almost seven years ago. Since then, I’ve successfully completed three apprenticeships. These qualifications not only equipped me with the essential skills for advancing in my career, but also provided a significant boost to my confidence.” Susan commented.

And Mitchell Hughes, an Advice and Guidance apprentice notes: “When I started the apprenticeship, I already worked for Mind as a Homelessness Intervention Project Worker. I’d only been in post for a short time with little experience in the housing sector. The apprenticeship was offered to me to gain an understanding of dealing with clients and increase my skills. As the modules were linked to my work, I soon started to use my new skills in my job. Straight away I noticed how much my skills had improved. I felt more comfortable with clients when using the structured approaches I’d learnt from the apprenticeship.”

The surge in demand for apprenticeships in specific fields, including digital marketing and leadership management, such as the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), is evidence that both employers and employees are capitalising on apprenticeships to improve performance, retain staff and reduce recruitment costs.

Welsh Business MSS Group Partners With Cardiff Rugby

RSK, a global leader in the delivery of sustainable solutions, and its Cardiff-based environmental services company MSS Group are partnering with Cardiff Rugby to use their expertise to help the club achieve its sustainability goals. And the partnership already has players like utility forward Josh Turnbull and flanker Ellis Jenkins talking about their own sustainability goals.

RSK and MSS Group, both principal partners and shirt sponsors, and another RSK environmental business, Nature Positive, will work with Cardiff Rugby to help the club evaluate and reduce its environmental impact by examining a range of factors including team and supporter travel to matches, recycling and food and beverage packaging, waste management along with examining sustainable energy options such solar power.

RSK Chief Executive Officer Alan Ryder said: “RSK is an enthusiastic supporter of sport, and like MSS, which has been supporting the club for more than a decade, we’re looking forward to working together to take our relationship beyond the rugby pitch. We know how passionate Cardiff Rugby is about its commitment to its community. Through the Cardiff Blue Community Foundation, it uses the power and values of sport to inspire, engage and improve opportunities for communities. The environmental impact of all we do, and the choices that we make, affect all of us and we hope to work with the club and the foundation to talk about how we can all make a difference every day.”

Cardiff players Josh Turnbull and Ellis Jenkins prioritise sustainability in their own lives and said they hope to learn more from RSK.

Josh said: “I’m quite environmentally conscious and I’m very aware of things like single-use plastic, staying away from that wherever possible, and teaching my kids good habits around recycling, reusing, and reducing waste. It’s something I’ve become more and more aware of with the increasing exposure of the climate crisis, how much plastic there is in the oceans and things like that. Ultimately, we want this planet to be here for a very long time after us for our kids, their kids and so on. The more sustainable and responsible we can be in all areas of life the longer we will have this planet.

“We’ve had an environmental committee and as a playing group, we are very aware of the challenges and are always driving to be more sustainable in our environment. I was at Glastonbury recently and it was quite an eye opener in terms of how much recycling there is available, the way tents are recycled and turned into flags, sculptures made from recycled products.”

He added: “RSK is clearly driving the standards of sustainability and as a club, we want to be part of that. If they can help us drive those standards, collaborate and work with other partners to be more sustainable, then that is brilliant.”

Ellis agreed, saying: “I have always been passionate about the environment and sustainability, so it is great to see the club continue their partnership with MSS Group, and now their parent company RSK, who is such a major player within that space.

“We already have many sponsors and suppliers who promote sustainability, whether someone like Octopus Energy or our waste management company, so it is great to bring all of this together and take it to a new level with RSK coming on board.

“Personally, I am also trying to make small changes like only buying locally sourced meat to ensure it is farmed responsibly and the food miles are as low as possible. I am really excited to see how this partnership develops in the coming years and how much difference we can all make. Having RSK on board will not only help make us more sustainable as a club but educate us in ways we can all improve our lifestyles to reduce our footprint on the planet.”

Jonathan James, MD at the MSS Group, added, “I am delighted that MSS and the RSK family are continuing our partnership with Cardiff Rugby. We know first-hand the positive influence that the team has on the Cardiff community and South Wales, and I am excited to see the wider effect our collaboration on this important sustainability project will have.”

Brand new apprenticeship launched to boost green skills vital to reach Wales Net Zero target

A leading Welsh apprenticeship provider, Educ8 Training Group, has announced a new Energy and Carbon Management apprenticeship with support from the Welsh Government.

With modules including Energy Procurement, Community Engagement and Analysis of Energy Consumption, the qualification will teach apprentices how to run an environmentally friendly, sustainable company, while also ensuring the business is able to thrive and grow.

Employers will further benefit from the apprenticeship as the apprentices learn to improve operational efficiency and cut wastage costs.

Simone Hawken, Qualifications Manager at Educ8, said: “This new Energy and Carbon Management apprenticeship has been created to develop essential green skills required in Welsh Government’s Net Zero Programme. It equips learners with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to become more sustainable and energy efficient at work and at home.”

A recent report published by Climate Change Committee has found that while the First Carbon Budget (2016-2020) has been achieved, Wales is not yet on track to meet its Net Zero targets for the second half of this decade and beyond. Action on decarbonisation in Wales must now accelerate.

As part of its commitment to the environment, Educ8 Training will also be working with climate charity Cynnal Cymru, to ensure the Group’s sustainability strategy is both up-to-date and as comprehensive as possible. This will help to make sure that Educ8 is leading by example and positively contributing to the Welsh Government’s target of Wales becoming a net zero nation by 2050.

Grant Santos, CEO at Educ8 Training Group, said: “Educ8 is proud to work in partnership with Cynnal Cymru to work towards our own goals of achieving carbon neutral status. As a leading apprenticeship provider in Wales, we are committed as an organisation as well as an educator. “

Clare Sain-ley-Berry, Director at Cynnal Cymru, said: “We are delighted to support Educ8 Training’s efforts in becoming a more sustainable organisation. Cynnal Cymru has been supporting individuals and organisations empowering everyone with vital knowledge and actionable plans towards sustainability. We encourage every organisation to take steps towards building a sustainable culture.”

Pontypridd United announce ownership investment from GS Verde

Ambitious Welsh Premier League football club Pontypridd United have announced a co-ownership investment from dealmaking business GS Verde Group.

The investment, which sees GS Verde’s Chief Commercial Officer, David Dulieu, join as Board Director and Ambassador, supports the club’s determination to become a sporting and community force and realise its ambition to achieve qualification to a UEFA European Football competition.

Paul Ragan, Chairman of Pontypridd United, said “It’s a true testament of the progress the club has made over the past few seasons; where we are now able to attract the kind of quality we have to the board in David and others. It’s also a real boost to the Pontypridd United Business Club, with GS Verde becoming one of our latest commercial partners.

It’s about supporting the local community, enjoying the journey, making friends, and doing business, and in simple terms that’s why we are attracting so much commercial interest at Pontypridd United.”

GS Verde joins the club as the 8th co-owner, alongside entrepreneurs such as Paul Ragan (Chairman) and Matthew Epps (Vice Chairman) amongst several others.

Ragan continued, “With significant investment expected in Welsh Domestic Football over the next 5 years, this is a great time for both existing and aspiring ‘Ryan Reynolds’ to get involved. As a club, we are building a model based on 20 equal owners, who we refer to as Ambassadors. It was important to the Board that we considered longevity in our model and recognise we have a significant role to play throughout the Pontypridd Community. We boast a thriving grassroots section, a strong UEFA ‘Cat B’ rated Academy, and two very ambitious Men’s and Women’s Premiership teams”.

GS Verde Group is an M&A dealmaking group supporting businesses through transactions such as business sales, acquisitions, and raising investment. The Group have previously worked with a number of the entrepreneurs involved in Pontypridd United, including the recent announcement of GS Verde supporting UPVC Direct on their acquisition of Principality Plastics.

David Dulieu, CCO and Board Director of GS Verde said: “We have had a great relationship with many of the business leaders involved in Pontypridd United for several years, and so we know the calibre of those involved. When the opportunity arose, we were delighted to support the club.”

Pontypridd United prides itself on being much more than a football club. With a focus on developing teams of all age groups and genders, and supporting local businesses and charities, the Club puts the local community at the heart of its motivation.

David concluded: “Living in Pontypridd, I know first-hand the impact the Club is having on our local community, with an excellent structure across all age groups. We are excited to join the club and play a part in helping the club achieve its European football ambitions and become recognised as Wales’s number 1 domestic club one day!”

Outdoor clothing brand Jöttnar raises seven-figure investment

Technical outdoor clothing brand, Jöttnar, has completed its latest investment round, raising over £1m through a mix of re-investment and crowdfunding, in a deal advised on by expert dealmaking firm, GS Verde Group.

The raise will support the business in accelerating the expansion of its product range, team, and customer base.

Jöttnar was conceived in Arctic Norway by founders Tommy Kelly and Steve Howarth. As two former Royal Marine commandos, they honed their skills as the world’s elite specialists in extreme cold weather, mountain warfare, and survival by exposing themselves to Norway’s extraordinarily demanding environmental conditions. These experiences inspired them to launch a range of technical outdoor clothing which excels in performance, protection, and style.

The £1.3m raised through Crowdcube, more than 150% over the original target investment, will fuel hiring within the product development and marketing divisions, expand Jöttnar’s women’s range and broader categories, and open wider distribution channels.

Jöttnar co-founder and Director, Tommy Kelly, said: “As lifelong mountaineers, climbers, and skiers, we leverage our first-hand experience into creating premium, disciplined designs and personally test our products to ensure each is up to the challenge.

“Customer loyalty forms an integral part of our success to date, and so crowdfunding was a natural progression for our next phase of growth. There is now a great opportunity to break into wider marketplaces and deliver an exciting growth plan.”

Multidiscipline dealmakers, GS Verde Group, advised on the deal, and the Development Bank of Wales and Venrex also provided funding and venture capital investment respectively.
