FourNet in the finals in the NW Business of the Year Awards

Judges consider growing tech firm to be ‘innovating, disrupting and thriving.’

Digital transformation and customer experience specialists, FourNet, have been selected as finalists in the North West Business of the Year Awards.

The Manchester-headquartered technology company was shortlisted after a presentation by FourNet’s senior leadership team and a site visit by a panel of judges.

The shortlist, announced today (Wed July 19th), follows a judging day that brought together judges and sponsors of the awards which are led by TheBusinessDesk.com.

The North West Business of the Year awards celebrate the very best business successes from across the region. Companies which are shortlisted by the judges are those that are considered to be “innovating, disrupting and thriving.”

Richard Pennington, CEO of FourNet, said: “FourNet has grown rapidly over the last few years, with a number of key strategic acquisitions and the creation of a new Customer Experience (CX) function which is unique in our sector.

“We are changing the way our customers think about CX, and we’re delighted that the judges consider us to be a company that is innovating, disrupting and thriving. We are looking forward to the next stage of the North West Business of the Year Awards.”

Alex Turner, joint managing director of TheBusinessDesk.com, said: “The judges have been really impressed by the achievements and ambitions of businesses as they have travelled around the North West meeting management teams.

“Because of the calibre of entrants across the categories, unfortunately many companies who entered haven’t made the shortlist. Those that have been shortlisted really stood out and the judges will have tough decisions to make in choosing winners.”

FourNet works with some of the most secure, critical and commercially driven customers in the UK, including more than 30 UK Government departments and agencies, as well as emergency services, housing associations, and local authorities.

With offices in Manchester, London and Derby, FourNet is one of the fastest growing privately owned technology companies in the UK, providing communications, cloud, contact centre, CX, managed service, cybersecurity and secure network infrastructure solutions.

The judges will select winners following a Finals Presentation Day in September with an Awards ceremony held in October.

‘Oscars of the technology industry’ recognise Yorkshire Green Tech Entrepreneur

A North Yorkshire businessman has been announced as 2023’s Green Tech Entrepreneur of the Year at a prestigious national awards ceremony billed the ‘Oscars of the technology industry.’

Mike Woodhall, CEO of Harrogate-based Chameleon Technology, picked up the award after being nominated at the Enterprise Awards 2023 in the Green Tech Entrepreneur category. The annual Enterprise Awards, organised by ScaleUp Group in association with the WCIT (The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists) celebrate the best of the UK’s technology entrepreneurial talent.

Now in its 11th year, the awards bring together and honour leading exponents from the UK’s technology sector including entrepreneurs, investors and advisors. The Green Tech Entrepreneur award recognises the achievements of entrepreneurs whose business uses technology to reduce human impacts on the natural environment.

As a pioneer of smart energy technology, Chameleon’s mission is to make it easy for everyone to reduce their climate impact by developing connected, clean and cost-effective home energy solutions. As the market leader in energy display technology – a Chameleon display is already in 1 in every 3 UK homes – Chameleon is helping to make low carbon, energy efficiency choices easy for everyone.

The company has been entrusted with over £3million of innovation funding from the government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to build the ‘proof of concept’ of a decarbonised energy system. It is building an integrated home energy management ecosystem, supporting the Smart Meter rollout with over 10 million high-quality in-home display (IHD) devices so far, while also delivering solutions directly to consumers through its consumer brand ivie.

Launched in 2022, ivie helps people to make smarter energy decisions on using their heating and home appliances, reducing their energy consumption and costs at home, via cutting-edge smart technology and apps. Chameleon’s growing range of apps and products – including the ivie energy saving app, the ivie Bud in-home display, and ivie Charge app for EV drivers – are already used by tens of thousands of people to help them save energy and carbon and reduce their bills.

Commented Mike Woodhall, co-founder and CEO of Chameleon Technology: “I’m delighted to have been nominated and won this award but what it truly reflects is the drive and commitment of the team of people at Chameleon Technology.

“Everything Chameleon, and by extension the ivie brand, does is to make managing energy simpler, smarter and more personal for as many people as possible. Accurate, real-time energy data is crucial for achieving this. With live data, people can make smart energy-saving decisions on the spot that bring genuine change to how they use energy.”

Close to 50,000 households have now downloaded the ivie app and are successfully using it to monitor their home energy habits, lower energy bills and cut their carbon emissions.

Added Mike: “I’m proud to say that Chameleon Technology is a real innovator in the smart energy space and a key supporter of Net Zero and low carbon technology projects. It’s imperative that consumers are fully engaged with the transition towards carbon neutrality. However, more must be done to get the UK on track to achieve the Government’s environmental targets – and, as a progressive business, we are fully committed to driving this agenda.”

From Kitchen Table to Top Table!

LS Productions is today celebrating appearances on The Sunday Times 100 and FEBE Growth 100 lists – recognising the UK’s fastest growing private companies.

Both lists celebrate British business at its best – highlighting founders that are driving their companies to deliver significant sales, revenue and profit, against a backdrop of unprecedented economic challenges.

Mimi Webb, Aviemore, Scotland, 5th April 2023

With their headquarters in Edinburgh, LS Productions are the UK’s largest production service company with additional offices in London and Manchester. LS’s recent growth is down in part to the expansion of their services into the international film & TV sectors, taking on global TV and film production service projects over the last 18 months, with recent projects including  Ghosted (Skydance / Apple TV), episodes of the Bachelor (NZK Productions / Warner Bros Entertainment / ABC) and a Kind of Spark (CBBC / BYUtv America). As part of this growth they have also added a warm water production and location facility in Malta to further bolster their international offering.

Vodafone Commercial, LS Productions, Barns Ness Lighthouse, 28th May 2021

In conjunction with this expansion, the LS growth can also be directly attributed to a commitment to invest in and recruit talent in the LS’s core production specialisms, including commercials, fashion, music and sport. The diversification of these business streams was a deliberate move to weather the storm faced by the production industry in a post Covid landscape.

LS BTS Tom Kitchin GQ Lexus shoot day 2, East Lodge, Selkirk, 29th September 2020

Across this period LS has worked on a succession of high profile service production projects ranging from Ed Sheeran’s latest album Subtract (Freenjoy / Directed by Mia Barnes), Harry Styles ‘Adore You (Freenjoy / Directed by Dave Meyers), Valentino’s Pink Dreamsstarring Zendaya (Marcell Rev / Michael Bailey Gates) and ‘You’re Up’ featuring Cristiano Ronaldo for Nike (Wieden & Kennedy/ Directed by Megaforce).

Not only this but Covid also provided cause for reflection about where the business saw itself creatively in the long term and how they could look to continue to stay true to their values of being ‘creative at heart’ which drove further diversification with the arrival of an original content arm in the form of LS Films.

Thanks to this successful business strategy, LS has seen a two year growth of 273% and boasts sales of £20 million.

CEO and Founder, Marie Owen, Edinburgh, Scotland, 20th April 2023

Speaking about the recognition, CEO and Founder Marie Owen, said: “I’m beyond thrilled to see LS Productions name appear on such prestigious lists, in fact I can’t quite believe it. If you could have told me that we’d be appearing on lists like these when I started the business back in 2006 from my kitchen table I’d probably have laughed and said ‘are you joking’.

“It’s such a fantastic achievement and so rewarding to see all the incredible hard work and dedication that myself and the team have put in to get recognised. Both in terms of growing a world-class global production company, but also a business that people genuinely love working for that is firmly rooted in the values of kindness, hard work and learning.”

Marie continued: “Post Covid we had to completely re-evaluate where we wanted to go – not just professionally but personally. So we went, quite literally back to our roots – which meant investing heavily in specialised expertise to develop focused business streams; Fashion, Sport, Commercial, Music Videos, Film & TV Service and an original content division called LS Films. This robust diversification gives LS a solid foundation in an industry that is notorious for huge highs and steep lows because we’re not overly dependent on one particular stream and it also allows us to explore our creative passion with LS Films.”

Medtronic awarded The Menopause Friendly Accreditation

Medtronic – the global healthcare technology organisation – has been awarded The Menopause Friendly Accreditation.  With a business goal of ‘alleviating pain, restoring health and extending life’, Medtronic boldly confronts the most challenging health problems facing humanity by searching out and finding solutions.

Medtronic unites a global team of 95,000 people in a desire to provide innovative technologies which transform the lives of two people every second of every hour of every day.  Within the UK and Ireland it employs 1,234 people in its Watford and Dublin offices.

The Menopause Friendly Accreditation, established by Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace (www.menopausefriendly.co.uk), recognises high standards and proven practices that embrace menopause in the workplace.

In order to achieve The Menopause Friendly Accreditation, employers are assessed by an Independent Panel and must demonstrate evidence of their effectiveness in these six key areas:  culture, policies and practices, training, engagement, facilities and evaluation.

Medtronic is proud of its success in achieving accreditation, seeing its commitment to menopause education as part of its aim to build a more inclusive culture.

“We wanted women to see Medtronic as a place for their career throughout all the stages of their life while also wanting men to feel included, and a part of our learning experience to allow them to support their partners, families and colleagues,” says Jacqui Godfrey, Women’s Health Team Member at Medtronic.

“Being menopause friendly has brought a very positive experience which is uniting our workforce: our work is ongoing as we continue to learn and to support in new ways,” adds Women’s Health Team Member Beverley Herrick.

Three key menopause friendly actions of which Medtronic is most proud include:

  • Banishing the stigma around both menopause and other areas of women’s health
  • Creating a network where passionate and caring people learn together and support each other
  • Witnessing the growth from a few tiny voices asking for change into building a strong foundation for every single one of our current employees and benefitting employees who have yet to join us

“Looking at how we have grown together, we are especially proud of our community of champions who are always keeping the conversation going,” says Stephanie Barlow, Women’s Health Team Member.  “This is so important as colleagues are able to talk openly, and confident that they are not only being heard but actively being listened to.

“Going the one step further to gain Menopause Friendly Accreditation has been so worthwhile.  This commitment is the right thing to do all of our employees and is central to our overall wellness strategy at Medtronic,” says Samantha Hall from the Medtronic Senior Leadership Team.

Women’s Health Team Member Colin Simpson was eager to be part of the menopause project group as part of his role as the Disease State manager for Gynaecology for the UK and Ireland.  “I was having daily conversations regarding women’s health and what more we could do as a company to improve education, knowledge and access to treatments,” he says. “Menopause has long been a topic of importance and it was abundantly clear to me that we had to come together to support the women within Medtronic as much as we could with education and resources to help when it came to menopause and its associated symptoms.”

“The commitment to educate and support all their staff really shines through at Medtronic,” says Deborah Garlick, CEO of Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace. “The enthusiasm with which the organisation and workforce has embraced Menopause Friendly Accreditation clearly demonstrates how important this issue is and how much of a difference to people’s lives it is making.”
