Tallest Building Tops Out In Staines-Upon-Thames

Berkeley has topped out Lily House in Eden Grove, the tallest residential building in Staines-Upon-Thames.

The occasion was marked and celebrated by the project director who laid the final brick on Lily House. The first homes will be ready for residents to move into in 2023, with the whole development set to complete in 2026.

Set around landscaped gardens, the collection of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments start from £357,500 with many apartments benefiting from sweeping views of the Surrey countryside or overlooking the shared garden space.

The homes come with unrivalled resident facilities that include a new co-working space, a concierge, cinema, private gym and a central landscaped garden with beautiful water feature.

With Central London just 35 minutes away by train, residents will enjoy the best of both worlds and revel in the outstanding natural beauty of the surrounding scenery and River Thames.

Eden Grove will provide 489 private and affordable homes and will have a wider impact on the local economy – with new jobs, training opportunities, improved infrastructure, facilities and green space for the whole community.

At its peak, Eden Grove will employ up to 250 people, sustaining hundreds of jobs during its five year construction programme and will leave behind around 20 permanent jobs as part of its legacy.

Karbon Homes appoints Esh Construction to deliver £1.2m refurbishment contract

Modern interior upgrades and home improvement works will be undertaken in more than 100 properties across the Tees Valley area following Esh Construction being appointed as contractor. The £1.2 million scheme is part of Karbon Homes’ programme of planned maintenance.

Located in the Coulby Newham area of Middlesbrough, the properties will undergo kitchen and bathroom replacements, and full electrical re-wires.

The scheme was procured via the Prosper Framework and work is set to commence early September.

Andrew Harrow, commercial manager at Esh Construction, said: “This contract award builds on the success of previous work we have delivered for Karbon Homes under the planned maintenance programme.

“Our growing portfolio will see us deliver refurbishment works in more than 1,000 homes across the North East region in the next 12 months and we’re delighted to strengthen our pipeline further with this latest contract.”

Karbon Homes announced a major programme of planned maintenance across its 30,000-strong housing stock last year. This is the second phase of its planned maintenance programme that Karbon has worked with Esh Construction to complete, the first of which saw interior upgrades and improvement works made to over 80 homes spanning from Northumberland to North Yorkshire.

David Milburn, head of investment at Karbon Homes, said: “We’re pleased to once again be working in partnership with Esh Construction to deliver this next phase of our planned maintenance programme to homes in Teesside.

“This work is the latest phase of a larger, £20.5 million investment programme Karbon is delivering across our communities. It illustrates our continued commitment to ensuring our homes are modern, good quality, safe and secure, and we’re looking forward to seeing this phase being successfully delivered.”

As part of Esh’s Constructing Local strategy, which outlines the firm’s commitment to maximising social and economic value within the communities surrounding its live construction sites, the scheme will provide local employment and work experience opportunities, engagement within local schools as well as generating funding for a charitable project.

Show home open at Stonewood Partnerships’ flagship sustainable neighbourhood

EVENTING star Harry Meade cut the ribbon on the show home at Orchard Field – Stonewood Partnerships’ flagship sustainable neighbourhood of 88 low energy homes at Siddington in Gloucestershire.

The acclaimed rider and Stonewood ambassador, who has competed at 12 Badminton International Horse Trials, told invited guests, staff and contractors how proud he was to be invited to open the home – a three-bedroomed Pippin – and how impressed he was with the sustainable credentials within the show home, which is now open for appointments.

He said: “It’s brilliant to be here and it’s wonderful to see the future of how more and more people are going to live. Hopefully this is the start of a big journey for Stonewood and congratulations to everyone involved.”

Stonewood Partnerships Managing Director Sam Smart spoke of his pride in the quality of the homes, which have been designed to be as low energy as possible without compromising the high standards of finish and craftmanship the company has produced in its other award-winning developments.

“It’s quite a significant year for us with it being our 50th birthday and it’s really nice to take a moment and stop to give thanks to everybody involved in getting to this stage of the project,” he said.

“Stonewood’s growth is rooted in core values which were established back in 1972 – quality, craftmanship and innovation. We strive to create beautiful buildings that stand the test of time and we are seeing that here at Orchard Field.

“Designing these new buildings to the highest possible environmental standards is a challenge that we have embraced and we look forward to building many more in the region. Setting new standards in housebuilding is what we strive for and we want to keep pushing the boundaries of sustainability and build quality.”

Families have already moved into the first two of the 88 two, three, four and five bedroom homes on the 11 acre development, which is bordered by trees, parkland, fruit orchards and allotments on a 35 acre site on the edge of the village.

Each Cotswold stone or red brick home, designed by sister company Stonewood Design in conjunction with ecological consultant Greenguage, will have solar panels embedded into the roof, timber frames, 45cm thick walls filled with eco-friendly insulation, triple glazing and airtight interiors to eliminate draughts and allow the energy-efficient heating system to cut bills by up to 70 per cent compared to standard -new-built houses.

Ground-floor underfloor heating fuelled by an air source heat pump and the use of mechanical ventilation heat recovery, which removes warm air from the kitchen and bathroom and uses it to heat air flowing into the living room and bedrooms, will keep the homes warm in winter and cool in summer.

Every one of the 11 contemporary Cotswold styles of home in the community has been designed to meet stringent Association for Environment Conscious Building standards that demand excellent construction and low energy consumption.

The parkland entrance to the neighbourhood will be lined with new woodland featuring a mix of Beech, Field Maple, Hazel, Alder, Wild Cherry, Hornbeam, Lime and Yew. A ten-year management plan will care for the existing 1990s-planted woodland, where diseased ash has been replaced with a mix of broadleaf varieties. Native shrubs form a threshold between the woodland and the parkland.

Fruit orchards and 900 metres of hedgerow around the development will add to more fruit trees planted within four character areas across the neighbourhood that will include tree-lined walkways, courtyards, gardens, a play areas.

Mr Smart said Stonewood’s ethos of working as a team has helped it overcome the design challenges of the project. “Stonewood is a people business, that’s how we’ve grown from a few people to almost 400 across the group and we understand that everybody is important and that individual contributions within the team as it comes together helps us to achieve great things,” he said.

“Our excellent consultant design team have really risen to the challenge on this project, designing something that really does raise the bar – and that goes down to the most minute details such as where we place the bin stores and bike stores.

“To take that design from page to site takes a first class supply chain of contractors and we have had a great team supporting us. It has been a brilliant team effort and we should be proud of what we have achieved.”

He also paid tribute to joint venture partner Nicholas Arbuthnott, the retired architect who had the original vision for the project. “Nicholas’ ambition for the legacy of the project was quite clear from the start and his wisdom and knowledge has been instrumental in producing what we see today,” he said.

A virtual tour of The Olive, a four bedroom style of home at Orchard Field, can be found at www.stonewoodpartnerships.co.uk/our-developments/orchard-field/the-olive/ and appointments to visit the show home can be made by calling 01454 809780 or emailing orchardfield@stonewoodpartnerships.co.uk.

Understanding the difference between woodworking and carpentry

The two key areas of woodworking careers are being a woodworker and a carpenter. Many people believe these two careers are the same but they actually have key differences, despite falling under the same umbrella of woodworking.

When you want to start a career in woodworking, it’s important you decide between being a woodworker and a carpenter. But what are the differences? Keep reading to find out.

Woodworking

Woodworking is very much associated with the artistic side of woodwork. If you’re creative and love making things out of wood then this is the career for you. Woodworking is about carving unique creations out of wood.

The demand for wooden trinkets has gone up in recent years due to the originality that comes from it. Nobody wishes to have something that everyone else has anymore, making woodworking a great career choice.

Carpentry

Carpentry is a trade that’s all about building and repairing things with wood. Usually, as a carpenter you’ll work with builders to install and craft structures within a house. As a carpenter you’ll need to possess certain skills such as being good at mathematics and having great attention to detail.

Carpentry is all about the structural part of woodwork, going into this trade is incredibly rewarding and there are plenty of career options available. Consider this woodworking career if this sounds like something you’d love!

Become a woodwork apprentice

If you’re a young person looking to start a career in woodworking, an apprenticeship is a great stepping stone. Becoming a woodwork apprentice will teach you all the necessary skills you need to become a successful woodworker.

You may be working on a construction site for carpentry or within a wood workshop. These are two environments that will keep you busy and learning, the perfect start to your woodworking career.

At the end of your apprenticeship you will receive a qualification, this will make it easier for you to go on to your next woodworking job. Having work experience is very valuable and can help you get a headstart in your career.

What tools, equipment, and machinery will I need?

To start up your business as a professional woodworker, you’ll need some key tools, equipment, and machinery. Here are the basics that you’ll need to get you started:

  • Table saw
  • Band saw
  • Beam saw
  • Dust collector
  • Chisel

These are the essentials, although you may find you need some more tools and machinery as you advance.

MC Construction completes facelift for 18th century mansion house

An historic council-owned building in Stockport has been refurbished to provide modern offices for community-based adult social workers.

Salford-based MC Construction has completed a project which has created new office space on the first floor of Gatley Hill House, a former public library on Church Road, Gatley.

The Georgian mansion house, built in the mid-18th century, houses a community centre on the ground floor which the council rents out for meetings and social events.

The first floor had been vacant for years but has now been brought back into use as office space for around 40 social workers covering Gatley, Cheadle and Bramhall, who are relocating from other existing offices around the borough.

Jo Smith, construction lead for Stockport Council, said: “Thanks to the successful completion of this project, the team has a much better and bigger working environment and will be able to operate more effectively.

“It is pleasing to bring the first floor of Gatley Hill House back into use, while also carrying out improvements to the ground floor for the benefit of the wider community.

“The works carried out by MC Construction have preserved and significantly enhanced the condition of the building in a manner that is sympathetic to its heritage, which is extremely satisfying to see.”

MC Construction undertook a programme of external and structural works as well as an internal revamp of the two-storey building, which is set in parkland and lies within the Gatley Village Conservation Area.

The project included the installation of a new roof, windows and rainwater goods, underpinning, interior partitions and doors, new mechanical and electrical systems, a refurbishment of the kitchen and washrooms, new office access and fire alarm systems, a rewire, and decoration. Original features were repaired and refurbished wherever possible.

Electric vehicle charging points have been installed in the grounds as part of the scheme.

David Lowe, managing director of MC Construction, said: “The project has greatly modernised a lovely historic building which was in need of significant repair, leading to an improved appearance, restoring the first floor to good use, improving the energy performance of the building and positively benefiting the environment with the installation of electric vehicle charging points.

“I’m extremely proud of our team who worked on this scheme, which truly showcases our expertise in sympathetically and successfully updating and regenerating heritage buildings.

“Alongside our own staff, we were delighted that all of the contractors appointed to work on the project were located within a 30-mile radius of the building, ensuring a significant sum went back into the local economy and once again demonstrating our commitment to adding social value to the work we undertake.”

Construction boom leads to £120,000 investment in Bruderer high-speed press line

Taking advantage of new reshoring opportunities has seen a Warwick-based manufacturer invest more than £120,000 in its first high-speed press line with Bruderer UK.

JBS Products Ltd, known worldwide for its patented hook-on plaster bead, has installed a precision BSTA 25H press line at its Park Farm factory.

The machine is set to deliver greater accuracy and increased capacity, meaning the family-run business can guarantee process stability and part quality for its innovative building products that are bought direct or stocked in the likes of Selco, Travis Perkins and RJ Builders Hardware.

This new addition, which features advanced tooling automation, is set to be utilised on several new projects that are meeting the increasing demand for UK-manufactured products and will help deliver greater security of supply following significant global disruption.

“Having worked with Bruderer technology before, there was only one machine I wanted to have in our press shop when the opportunity came to expand,” explained Bud Dhinjan, Founder and CEO of JBS Products.

“We had enjoyed a number of reshoring successes and, in order to keep up with demand, we had to increase our press capability and that is why we decided to purchase a new BSTA 25H press line to give us that tremendous reliability and the famous Bruderer service.”

He continued: “Our reputation has been built on providing quality, innovative products that are cost effective and make the end-users life as simple and easy as possible, offering our wholesale customers a one-stop shop for design, product development and volume production.

“Since the onset of the pandemic, we have seen demand rocket, driving the employment of an additional five people and prompting investment in a further £250,000 onsite toolroom at our Warwick works to maintain a double shift pattern.”

Bruderer UK’s technical team worked with JBS to spec out the BSTA 25H, which consists of a precision feeder BBV 202/120, dual stock decoiler, cut-to-length system and full press line control.

Scott Baker, Technical Sales Manager at Bruderer UK, commented: “This machine will future-proof JBS’ production and delivers unrivalled speed, precision and reliability for the firm’s growing customer base. Bud and his team will also benefit from our full technical support and back-up for decades to come.”

Manny Dhinjan, Sales Director at JBS Products, concluded: “The installation process is going to be fully project-managed by Bruderer, meaning we can concentrate on meeting production increases and putting in place the platform we need to maximise several reshoring opportunities we are currently working on.”

Project manager wins prestigious award for housing project in Greenwich

A project manager from Bellway London has won a national award for overseeing the construction of high-quality new homes in Greenwich.

Jason Spink has been named as a recipient of this year’s Pride in the Job Quality Award in recognition of his work at The River Gardens development off Banning Street.

Construction work is nearing completion at the site, where all 264 homes for private sale have now been sold.

He is among the 443 winners who have been selected to receive the accolade by the National House Building Council (NHBC) from a pool of more than 8,000 site managers from across the country. These recipients will now be considered for the Seal of Excellence later this year.

Pride in the Job celebrates site managers who achieve the highest standards in construction and has become one of the most prestigious competitions in the housebuilding industry since it was first held more than 40 years ago.

This is the second time that Jason has won a Quality Award, having previously picked up the prize in 2014.

Jason, 52, who lives in Basildon, Essex, said: “This award is a very satisfying achievement for our whole team because it acknowledges the effort and care that we put into each home that we build.

“We have gone above and beyond to please our customers throughout our time at The River Gardens. That is why I believe that our team fully deserved to win the Quality Award.”

After starting out in the construction industry as a carpenter at the age of 17, Jason joined Bellway as a site manager in 2009.

He continued: “I first went into carpentry because my father and my elder brother were both working for a local developer as carpenters, and I have been employed in the construction sector ever since.

“The best thing about working for Bellway is that I have been able to build strong working relationships with those on my team because we all take pride in the homes we hand over to our buyers.

“My plan for the coming years is to keep performing to the high standards we have managed to achieve at Bellway so that our customers can continue to expect the best from us.”

John Haggerstone, Construction Director for Bellway Thames Gateway, said: “For our site managers, winning an NHBC award in any year is rewarding, but this year has been a special achievement in such challenging circumstances, ensuring our building sites are kept to the highest standards we set ourselves at Bellway, and keeping our customers and local residents happy with the work we are doing across those sites.

“Jason and his team have consistently demonstrated their excellence in delivering new homes to our customers over the past 12 months and Bellway is extremely proud of and grateful for their efforts, resulting in the Quality Award they have been deservingly given by NHBC. We would wish Jason all the very best for the next stage of the NHBC awards this year, as he progresses to the Seal of Excellence phase of judging.”
