Panicium acquires The Bury Black Pudding Company

An award-winning iconic producer of black puddings is primed for ‘step-change growth’ after becoming the third acquisition for artisan speciality food group Panicium.

Panicium has acquired The Bury Black Pudding Company (BBP) for an undisclosed sum.

The deal follows Panicium’s acquisitions of handmade cakes and biscuits producer Margaret Hall and specialist potted meats and spreads manufacturer Binghams Food in 2018 and 2021 respectively.

BBP, founded by managing director Debbie Pierce, has expanded into a business with turnover of £11.5m, employing 122 staff operating from a 25,400sq ft factory in Bury.

Graham Norfolk, one of Panicium’s founding directors, said it remains business as usual for BBP and its workforce, adding that the group would invest to further grow the newly-acquired company and build on its strong foundations by introducing new product ranges, increasing its market share and expanding and developing customer relationships.

Debbie and production director Richard Morris remain in their roles and join Panicium’s senior management team following the acquisition.

BBP has over 50 years’ manufacturing experience and uses a gold medal-winning recipe that dates back over a century alongside traditional production methods.

Black pudding is synonymous with Bury and is part of the town’s heritage, and BBP’s dedication to quality has helped it become one of the leading brands in the UK.

BBP selects the finest quality ingredients and manufactures the healthiest black pudding on the market, with less than three per cent fat and no artificial preservatives. With its high iron and nutritional values, low-fat black pudding has been recognised as a superfood.

As well as its continued focus on the production of traditional black pudding, BBP has developed vegan, gluten-free and chilli varieties.

It has one of the longest-established stalls on Bury’s world-famous market, with generations of families coming to buy its renowned black puddings. The same black puddings are also supplied to major supermarkets, foodservice companies, wholesalers, hotels, butchers and restaurants across the UK.

Debbie began working on her local market at the age of 12 as a Saturday girl and spotted a gap in the market for a quality black pudding on supermarket shelves.

She became business partners with Richard, who had taken over his father’s black pudding business after spending his teenage years working there. Over the years, BBP has grown significantly and remains committed to offering local job opportunities, including taking on apprentices and teaching them skills in the food manufacturing industry.

Debbie said: “Having steadily grown our sales and developed new business, Richard and I decided that it was time to start the next phase of business growth through becoming part of a group that is committed to the quality of its products and maintaining the family values of which we are so proud. BBP is poised for step-change growth and will benefit from investment and market extension available through the Panicium group.

“Our product range is complementary to the Panicium strategy and we share a number of routes to market. Ultimately, our products are consumed by people who love artisan, quality food. We look forward to working with the Panicium team to develop the group’s position as a leading supplier of quality foods.”

Graham Norfolk said: “The Bury Black Pudding Company makes artisan, high-quality, delicious products with a distinctive brand, and complements Panicium’s strategy of acquiring companies in the UK artisan food sector to develop a portfolio of brands characterised by their hand-made, high-quality nature with a distinctly regional identity.”

Charlotte Church narrates film to promote The Outdoors Capital of Wales

A promotional film is being launched this morning (January 2) to share the rural market town of Rhayader, branded The Outdoors Capital of Wales, with the rest of the world.

Situated in Powys, in the middle of Wales and heart of the Cambrian Mountains, an Area of Astounding Natural Beauty, Rhayader punches way above its weight and now has Welsh celebrity Charlotte Church singing the town’s praises.

The ‘Voice of an Angel’ star has narrated the new film – which promotes the range of exciting outdoor activities and events that the town and nearby, spectacular Elan Valley have to offer.

A singer-songwriter, actress and television presenter, Church shot to childhood stardom as a classical singer and now runs a wellness retreat, The Dreaming near Rhayader.

She was happy to add her voice to the film when approached by Rhayader 2000, the organisation that promote tourism in partnership with the town council.

“It was wonderful narrating the excellent promotional video for Rhayader The Outdoors Capital of Wales,” said Charlotte. “This really is a magical part of Wales with incredible countryside, spectacular landscapes and warm and welcoming people, which encouraged me to open The Dreaming Retreat near the town.

“I wish Rhayader 2000 every success with this video and hope it helps to attract many more visitors to the area where there’s so much to do, see and enjoy in the magnificent outdoors.”

The film and two shorter social media clips were made by Tremio over the past year, with supplementary photography for Rhayader 2000 website https://rhayader.co.uk/ captured by Mogwai Media.

Kerena Pugh, of Rhayader 2000, thanked everyone who had contributed to the film which she described as a huge community effort. “The work that has gone into rebranding ‘Rhayader the Outdoors Capital of Wales’ has really made a difference and will continue to help the town to grow,” she said.

“Film is a great way to showcase what Rhayader has to offer visitors. The combination of superb aerial footage from Sam Cook at Tremio and contributions by local people has produced something magical.

“With Rhayader already internationally famous for the Hafod Hardware Christmas adverts produced by owner Tom Jones, we wanted to continue the creative use of film to show the varied activities, breathtaking scenery and the welcoming community spirit that we have here all year round.”

The spectacular landscape which is ideal for cyclists, runners and walkers.

Mr Cook said he had been inundated with volunteers during the making of the film, which he described as being “special”.

Rhayader’s Mayor Councillor Rhys Thomas added: “This is another step on the exciting journey to make Rhayader a destination in its own right.”

He congratulated Rhayader 2000 for working with the town council to create a vision for local tourism and thanked MWT Cymru and the Cambrian Mountains Initiative for helping to promote Rhayader.

MWT Cymru chief executive Val Hawkins said the film not only promotes Rhayader as the Outdoors Capital of Wales but also captures the strong community spirit.

The film is dedicated to the late Liz Lloyd, a Rhayader 2000 founder who died in 2022. She served the organisation for 22 year and helped to promote local tourism, businesses and the community.

“Liz was very passionate about Rhayader and was part of many organisations and volunteer groups that do great work in the town,” added Kerena. “A donation to Rhayader 2000 made by her family from the funeral memorial service contributed to making the film.”

Rhayader 2000 is a member of MWT Cymru, an independent membership organisation representing around 600 tourism and hospitality businesses across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Snowdonia.

Chelmsford homebuilder’s charity walk raises over £16,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity

A Chelmsford-based housebuilder has completed a charity walk to raise money for its charity of the year, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity).

The event organised by Barratt and David Wilson Homes employee, Sarah Tew, aimed to not only raise vital funds for the charity, but to also encourage team building and bring a day full of joy to its employees.

The efforts of the dedicated participants culminated in an impressive total of over £8,070 raised for GOSH Charity. This sum was matched by the developer’s Barratt Foundation cause, resulting in a final tally of over £16,140 raised for the charity.

GOSH Charity exists to support seriously ill children from across the UK who are treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London.

GOSH Charity supports the hospital’s most urgent needs across four key areas: funding pioneering research into children’s health, cutting-edge medical equipment, vital support services for children and their families, plus the essential refurbishment and rebuilding of hospital facilities.

This charity walk saw the participation of nine teams comprised of the housebuilder’s enthusiastic employees, with each team consisting of 10 members sporting distinct colours selected by their team leaders.

The spirited competition saw the teams go head-to-head in a variety of games, surprises, and engaging tasks along the scenic coastal walk route.

Prizes were awarded for the best-dressed teams, and added an extra layer of excitement to the day’s proceedings.

Marina Barnes, Charity’s Head of Community Fundraising at GOSH, said: “It has been brilliant to be the Charity of the Year for Barratt and David Wilson Homes, and this charity walk is another fantastic fundraising initiative the staff have all got behind.

“We are so grateful for their support, particularly at this time of year when families at GOSH need our support more than ever. Thank you so much to everyone involved.”

The walk commenced at Frinton Golf Course, where the housebuilder’s Managing Director, Tom Wright, delivered a speech to set the tone for the day, which was followed by light-hearted entertainment, including karaoke sessions.

Afterwards, the participants embarked on the walk covering a substantial distance. Along the way, the teams engaged in various party games and physical challenges at a beach hut and a local pub in Walton-on-the-Naze.

To enhance the overall experience, each staff member was also equipped with a kit for the day including drawstring bags and inflatable beach balls.

Tom Wright, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “It was heart-warming to witness our employees come together with unwavering enthusiasm to participate and show support for our wonderful charity of the year, GOSH Charity.

“The event was both tremendously enjoyable and a resounding success.”

The prizes awarded to participants were sponsored by Pharoah Fencing, CHS, Siobhan Johns Photography, Artspace, Next, Cox Landscapes, Greggs, PickandMix.com, and members of the Barratt and David Wilson Homes team.

3 in 5 UK Businesses Avoid International Expansion Due to US Sales Tax Complexity

  • 60% of UK businesses have decided not to expand into the US because of sales tax complexity
  • While 80% of UK business leaders believe that tax complexity is one of the greatest burdens facing their organisation.
  • This ongoing tax complexity struggle for UK businesses comes on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, where the transatlantic relationship between Britain and the US came to a head over the taxation of tea.

Avalara, Inc., a leading provider of cloud-based tax compliance automation for businesses of all sizes, today released findings from a new survey* of UK-based businesses around the complexity of US sales tax. The survey found that sales tax complexity is hampering British businesses expanding into the US, with 60% of UK business leaders deciding not to expand into a new market or sell a new product in the US due to the complexity of dealing with additional compliance.

“International sales tax complexity continues to stump UK businesses and is causing many to hold on plans to sell their goods and services into the US, which is hurting the economy on both sides of the pond,” said Alex Baulf, Vice President of Global Indirect Tax at Avalara. “Thankfully there is a solution that does not involve throwing tea or other goods into the Thames.  UK businesses can save time and money by turning to automated tax and compliance solutions like Avalara that are designed to streamline tax calculations, tax filing, and tax record management – removing international sales tax complexities and freeing up time for growth and expansion.”

Sales tax is curbing UK business growth

The 16th of December marks 250 years since the Boston Tea Party took place, where the transatlantic relationship between Britain and the US came to a head over the taxation of tea. Hundreds of years later, sales tax complexity continues to put a strain on UK businesses expanding operations to the US. In fact,  65% of UK tea merchants reveal that — in a post-Brexit environment — US sales tax is harder to navigate than selling into Europe. This is despite 9 in 10 UK business leaders seeing the US as a key market for their operations.

Complexity is costing UK businesses time and money

Failing to keep up with the complexity of sales tax, over a third (36%) of UK business leaders have faced fines or penalties due to unintentional non-compliance with sales tax obligations. As a result, a third (33%) have paid up to £1,000 in fines in the last 12 months.

Tax complexity as a whole is costing businesses time. Over a third (35%) of UK business leaders spend up to 10 hours per month on tax compliance on average. As a result, 8 in 10 (83%) UK business leaders argue that sales tax complexity has become one of the greatest burdens facing their business. In fact, three quarters (76%) of UK business leaders reveal that staying compliant with sales tax makes them anxious.

To help businesses calculate their sales tax and shoulder the administrative burden of staying compliant, 77% of UK business leaders say they’d lean on technology, such as AI, to reduce sales tax and cross border tax complexity.
