A look back at the English Greyhound Derby

The sport of greyhound racing has undergone a dramatic facelift in recent years. Once a popular pastime for the working class, its numbers dwindled, ultimately forcing the majority of stadia to either repurpose or close their doors on a permanent basis. The pandemic inflicted even greater damage, with the presence of passionate spectators something you simply can’t recreate in races behind closed doors.

However, with life getting to get back to normal, those eager to place a greyhound bet on Betdaq had the English Greyhound Derby to look forward to, and it’s safe to say the showpiece event lived up to expectations. Widely regarded as the most prestigious event on the entire greyhound racing calendar, the 500-metre race garners the biggest prize pool in the sport, with the winner receiving a whopping £175,000 as well as writing their name in the history books.

The race is held at Towcester Greyhound Stadium, and while a restricted capacity were on hand to watch the first event back at the new ground after reopening with state-of-the-art facilities, this was the year a full crowd could appreciate the track with free reign.

The Midlands has become something of a spiritual home for greyhound racing, with the majority of Category One races, once emanating from the capital, moving slightly up north. The closest you’d get to greyhound action in London now is Romford’s track, and with Wimbledon giving up the derby in 2016, Nottingham was on hand to cover for the Northamptonshire Town throughout 2019 and 2020.

Last year saw Patrick Janssens at the double, with the Belgian, who is now easily recognised as one of the best trainers in the sport, won with Thorn Falcon whilst kennelmate Kilara Lion pipped Pat Buckley’s Deerjet Sydney to second place.

Just under a year on and plenty had changed in the Betdaq greyhound tips. Thorn Falcon’s drop off in form allowed Graham Holland-trained Romeo Magic to conjure up a victory with an impressive finishing time of 28.95 seconds — the fastest since Dorotas Wildcat in 2018.

The two-year-old had won his last two races and was familiar with the Northamptonshire track, seeing off Kildare and Mickys Barrett to secure the win. The former looked to be in the driver’s seat initially but showed superb pace to finish strongly, and earn praise from Holland, who wins his first Derby on his sixth attempt, adding to the list of winning Irish-trained champions in the process.

“We’ve been coming for a long time, got close to winning it, and now we have and it’s really special and fantastic to have won it, especially the way he won it,” he said.

“This is special for the family. They’ve worked so hard for this. Nicky, Rachel and Timmy have been over – but Christopher has also gone racing tonight for us at home. He’s holding the fort there. It’s a team effort and everyone’s involved and I thank them all.”

With Monmore’s Summer Stayers Classic and the Towcester Marathon still to come in Category One before the end of summer, there is plenty to get excited about in the coming months. And while there is still some time before the qualifiers for 2023 get underway in the spring, there is plenty of entertainment on offer in one of the country’s most under appreciated sports.

CloudStratex signs sponsorship deal with Richmond Rugby

Enterprise IT advisory-to-execution specialist, CloudStratex, has agreed to a one-year sponsorship deal with Championship rugby union side Richmond Rugby.

CloudStratex will sponsor the South-West London club, whose men’s first team plays in the RFU Championship (Level 2) for the 2022/23 season. The company typically helps large enterprise organisations improve their IT operational efficiency and resilience through better use of technology such as the cloud.

Richmond will use the sponsorship money to upgrade and modernise the Club’s current IT system. As part of the agreement, CloudStratex will have a pitch-side advertising board at every home game throughout the season and a full-page advert in every home digital match day programme, as well as one match ball sponsor position with the opportunity to host up to 10 guests on a Richmond match day.

Brad Day, co-founder and Director of CloudStratex, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to agree on this sponsorship deal with Richmond Rugby. Having been a member of the club for over 20 years, I know how much of a positive impact a sponsorship agreement like this will have on the management and development of the club, and we very much look forward to working with Richmond over the course of the new season.

Jimmy Wallace, Group Commercial Director for Richmond Rugby, added: “We are thrilled to have an innovative IT company like CloudStratex on board as a Club Partner and on behalf of the club, I would like to thank Brad and all his team for their support so far and we look forward to welcoming them all down here to the Athletic Ground this season.”

In July 2022, CloudStratex was awarded a prestigious position on The Sunday Times 100 fastest growing private companies list, where it was ranked the 27th fastest growing independent business and the fastest growing IT provider in the UK.

Bromwich Hardy in pole position with racing car sponsorship

Leading Midlands independent commercial property agency Bromwich Hardy has taken to the racetrack with a turbocharged new sponsorship deal.

The Coventry-based agency – which regularly finds itself in pole position in independent tables of the most successful agencies in the country – has teamed up with father-and-son car racing team Guy and Alex Povey.

The Poveys race in the all-action Gaz Shocks 116 Trophy – a one-make race formula dedicated to the BMW 116i which is now the country’s fastest-growing rear-wheel drive endurance series.

Each race lasts between 90 and 180 minutes with two mandatory pit stops and up to three drivers, there are also special sprint rounds and events are held at some of the country’s most famous racetracks.

Bromwich Hardy founding partner Tom Bromwich said he was delighted to be supporting the Poveys.

“Guy and Alex make a terrific team and it is wonderful to see a father and son being able to compete together at such a high standard in the same team.

“They bring to the racetrack all the qualities we value at Bromwich Hardy – teamwork, commitment to success and the need to bring through the next generation – and are a natural partner for us.”

Alex, aged 25, an automotive engineer with Bosch, said his 62-year-old dad had been racing for more than 20 years and had competed and won all over the world during his career.

“By contrast, this is only my second season racing having done a little bit of karting before when I was young. Last year we had a podium at Silverstone and some top 10 finishes and have had two outings so far this season at Croft and Oulton Park.

“At Croft we struggled in qualifying and started 17th out of 35. We eventually finished 14th after being hit from behind when a car with which Guy was battling lost its brakes.

“We had a great race at Oulton and were running eighth on the final lap – with every chance of moving up a couple of places – when a rival spun us out and into the barrier.

We have had to rebuild the front of the car after bending some suspension arms and smashing the front end.”

Alex said the Solihull-based team were now hoping for better luck throughout the remainder of the season.

“We cannot thank Bromwich Hardy enough for the help and support they have given us and it is tremendous to see such a successful company getting involved in motor racing at this level. We hope to reward their support with some great results later in the season.”

The Premier League managers who will be desperate for a bright start to the new campaign

With a new Premier League season on the horizon, football enthusiasts will be licking their lips at the chance to watch England’s top flight once again after a short hiatus. This season will certainly feel unique — fresh faces in the division, five substitutions per game, and the small matter of a World Cup forcing the first ever winter break which sees the action paused over November and December for international commitments.

Since so much football is being crammed into the initial three months of the season, a fast start is essential for teams to avoid giving themselves too much to do come the business end. Despite catching up on Manchester City last term, Liverpool simply ran out of time to get the better of Pep Guardiola, and inconsistency over Christmas provided decisive, the same as at Burnley, where a poor start under Sean Dyche left Mike Jackson fighting a losing battle in the Premier League dogfight.

With just over a week until the season gets started, managers from both ends of the table will be craving a bright start to the campaign. Read on, as we have a look at a few in the dugout that we think need it the most.

Jesse Marsch

Any football fan scouring the latest Premier League odds could all but tell you what would happen in Leeds United’s favour for most of last season — they were going to concede. The solid foundations laid by Marcelo Bielsa were swept away by a combination of injuries and fatigue which ultimately cost the Argentinian his job. Leeds were a victim of their own overachievement in 2020-21 and while they beat the drop last season under Jesse Marsch, the Elland Road faithful look as though they’ll be in for another long nine months this term.

Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips have both parted ways with the club, joining Barcelona and Man City respectively, and while three points on the opening day against Wolverhampton Wanderers would be an encouraging start, American coach Marsch will need real consistency in his results, some of which are more than winnable — a trip to St Mary’s against Southampton and then Brighton and Hove Albion and new boys Nottingham Forest between Chelsea at home.

Frank Lampard

Another side who were dragged into a relegation scrap last season, Everton have endured a tough couple of years. The false promises of Carlo Ancelotti, who it’s fair to say made a smart decision leaving Goodison Park to win another Champions League with Real Madrid in his second spell with the Spaniards, was followed by Rafael Benítez and now current boss Frank Lampard, undergoing something of an identity crisis on Merseyside.

Lampard can’t seem to figure out what his best side looks like, and since losing Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur he will be reliant on injury-prone talisman Dominic Calvert-Lewin to create the bulk of the chances. Having had moves for Christian Eriksen and a reunion with Idrissa Gueye spurned, expect another lacklustre season across Stanley Park, unless the Toffees can make an encouraging start to the campaign. A tough first game against Chelsea is followed by more favourable opponents in Forest and Brentford, with Lampard hoping to finally prove his doubters wrong in his first full season in the Everton hotseat.

Erik ten Hag

Although pre-season results aren’t always an indication of a successful season, Manchester United have made a bright start to life under Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman enforcing his high standards from minute one of their tour to Bangkok. A great start saw his side win 4-0 against a makeshift Liverpool side, but you could already see his possession-based philosophy intertwine with the car crash that was left by Ralf Rangnick towards the end of last season.

Unless a suitable buyer is found for Cristiano Ronaldo, he’ll stay put at Old Trafford for another year, and alongside new signings Eriksen and Lisandro Martínez, United could make light work of Brighton in their opening fixture, with the real test welcoming Liverpool at the end of August, where they can try and get redemption for the 5-0 drubbing they received under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Poetic pupils record rap tribute to Wrexham AFC and Hollywood owners

THAT’S A RAP! An inspiring song written by poetic pupils will live on forever thanks to Wrexham Sounds.

A talented group of more than 80 learners from St Peter’s Primary School in Rossett recorded the track – One Hotdog and a Massive Kit Kat – with representatives from the Rhosrobin music studio and Darren Hughes, director of Pivotal Sound and Lighting.

Written by and starring children from different years, the rap follows Wrexham AFC’s attempt to win the FA Trophy while paying homage to Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, star striker Paul Mullin, and referencing teachers, landmarks, and their favourite things about the city.

Wrexham Sounds General Manager Olivia Gallagher was impressed with the finished result and said: “They were so professional and only needed one take! The rap is amazing, and we were just glad to be able to visit them and record if for posterity.

“They are a credit to Wrexham and I’m sure they’ll all continue to write and produce songs that will have a positive impact on the club and their local community.”

Key Stage Two teacher Rebecca Roberts said the experience of writing and recording the rap – which went viral on social media – is one they will never forget.

“We will all remember this day forever and are so grateful to Wrexham Sounds for their support,” she added.

“The rap started with Year 6 before gaining the attention of other children, so we thought it would be nice for everyone to get involved.

“The noise levels throughout the school were very high at times as it was the first thing we had done together since the beginning of the pandemic; it was a release for the pupils in the end.

“The club is a huge part of the community and what’s happened since the arrival of Rob and Ryan has captured the imagination, which is brilliant and made it a fantastic project to be involved in.”

And finally, where did the unique name come from?

“As a family we go and watch Wrexham AFC and one of the pupils saw me there eating a massive Kit Kat!” said Rebecca.

“He said he really wanted a hot dog, and it went from there – that’s how the rap was born!”

She added: “Their energy, the lyrics, it’s all fantastic and we are so very proud of them, it’s shown them that if they put their minds to it, they can do anything.

“Because of Wrexham Sounds they’ll now be able to listen to the rap for years to come – thank you.”

Since opening its doors in February, not-for-profit Wrexham Sounds has made huge progress in forging new partnerships and securing the services of talented freelance musicians and tutors to deliver lessons and activities across multiple genres to disadvantaged young people.

As well as children and teenagers who are referred via a range of local agencies and educators there are sessions for pupils unable to access music lessons at school.

For more information or to join the team at Wrexham Sounds as a freelance tutor or volunteer, visit www.wrexhamsounds.org and follow them on social media at @wrexhamsounds.

Glorious golf day putts smile on charity’s face

A fundraising golf day organised by a leading financial specialist for a children’s charity has been hailed a huge success after raising £7,000.

Q Financial Services – which has bases in Wellington and Shrewsbury – staged the special day at Wrekin Golf Club in aid of the Little Rascals Foundation, with former Wolves manager Dave Jones joining fellow football star Jay Bothroyd and around 100 players for the event.

Q director Stuart Mackintosh said the day and evening meal could not have been better, with players and guests coming from across Shropshire and the Midlands to boost the fundraising effort.

“We had the most marvellous day and I cannot thank everybody enough for giving up their time to support both the Little Rascals Foundation and all of us at Q Financial Services,” said Stuart.

“Having people of the calibre of Dave Jones give our after-dinner speech, and also being supported by former Wolves star Jay made the day all the more special. We particularly enjoyed the Pro Challenge, in which Q’s own Mike Barton used his skills as a tennis coach to volley balls onto the 14th green and challenge the golfers to get closer.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to Wrekin Golf Club for their excellent support and to everyone who sponsored the day, donated prizes for the raffle and the lots for our charity auction.”

The Little Rascals Foundation was set up by former Wales, Wolves and Shrewsbury Town star Dave Edwards and Q mortgage partner Ben Wootton to support children with disabilities and their families.

The foundation works to provide the help the children need to enhance their lives and increase their independence so that they can realise their potential.

Dave, himself a director at Q, said: “The foundation is hugely grateful to Q and everybody who took part in what was a very special day. Every penny raised will go towards helping give youngsters the best possible opportunities in life and putting smiles on some truly deserving faces.”

Supervisor Naomi Horne said this was the first time it would be open during the summer.

“It’s very exciting to be hosting the Welsh team and to be opening up for the first time this summer,” she said. “Student staff are coming in to work and it will be great to show our support.

“We will be decorating the lounge with some Welsh flags and adding a few touches to make the team feel at home.

“We will be offering the team food and drinks and a place to socialise and relax. It’s the first time we will be open during the summer.”

Around 60 members of Team Wales will be arriving at the campus this weekend (July 23) and staying during the Games, which run from July 28 to August 8.
