Norwich school receives hedgehog home from housebuilder to help prickly pursuit

A school in Rackheath has received a hedgehog home donation for National Hedgehog Awareness Week, to help reverse the decline of the species.

Developer Barratt and David Wilson Homes donated the habitat as part of the annual National Hedgehog Awareness Week, which took place at the beginning of May.

The awareness week is organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, and aims to highlight the issues hedgehogs face, whilst providing solutions for what people can do to support them.

Following the society’s suggestion to buy or build a hedgehog home, the housebuilder donated a ‘hogitat’ hedgehog home to Rackheath Primary School, located on Willoughby Way near the developer’s Woodland Heath development.

Helen Grogutt, Class Teacher at Rackheath Primary School, said: “We often find a hungry hedgehog within the school grounds so it is lovely to have a safe home for them where we can put some food and water.

“The children were very excited when it arrived and have been keen to find out what type of food we should leave out for hedgehogs. We are fortunate in having a lovely wildlife area with a bug hotel and will initially place our new hedgehog home here and hope for visitors!

“We are very grateful to Barratt and David Wilson homes for this gift.”

As of July 2020, the British hedgehog was officially classified as vulnerable to extinction, meaning it is more important than ever to protect our prickly neighbours.

Annette Hurst, Sales Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “As a leading housebuilder, we know that home is where the heart is and that’s true for all types of residents, human or otherwise!

“We hope our donation will give local hedgehogs protection and a safe home at Rackheath Primary School, whilst also encouraging the pupils to consider the wildlife near their own homes.”

Woodland Heath is a development of three and four bedroom homes, offering the perfect village lifestyle while also boasting great commuter links to Norwich city centre, with Norwich Railway Station and Norwich International Airport just a short commute away.

For more information about the new homes being built at Woodland Heath, call the Barratt Homes sales team on 033 3355 8488 or the David Wilson Homes sales team on 033 3355 8489. Alternatively, you can visit www.barratthomes.co.uk or www.dwh.co.uk.

Essex homebuilder donates over £7,000 to homeless charity

Chelmsford-based Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties has made a donation of £7,700 to CHESS Homeless (Church Homeless Emergency Support Scheme), one of its Charities of the Year for 2022.

CHESS operates 13 properties in Chelmsford that offer temporary accommodation and support services for up to 66 single homeless adults. The charity ensures that people who find themselves homeless are given the support they need to move forward and live a good, independent life.

Matt Cranfield, Finance Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, presented the donation to Lynne Dejoodt, Marketing and Fundraising Manager at CHESS.

Lynne commented: “We were excited at the opportunity to share the work that we do with a local business and build a relationship with Barratt and David Wilson Homes.

“Our services have more than doubled in a very short space of time. This does mean with our extra residents and properties the running costs are much higher, especially with the rise in energy costs and food. The donation from Barratt and David Wilson Homes will go some way to relieving the pressure.

“We would like to thank Barratt and David Wilson Homes for choosing CHESS as a charity partner. The last few years haven’t been what we expected and we appreciate the efforts they have gone to raise these funds for us.

“The services we provide are a lifeline for people in our community and we are thrilled that Barratt and David Wilson Homes chose to support our efforts.”

Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, Simon Wood, said: “We fully appreciate our responsibility to contribute to our local community. With the rising cost of living, we know that now more than ever, charities like CHESS are essential in our society.

“At Barratt and David Wilson Homes, we are proud to support such an important charity. I would like to thank all our staff for helping to raise this money that will help CHESS continue their vital work.”

CHESS will be running new fundraising events throughout the year, including their annual Sleep Out and a Summer Fun Day. To find out more, visit https://chesshomeless.org/.

Nottinghamshire housebuilder makes grand gesture to homeless charity

Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes North Midlands has recently made a £1,000 donation to a Stapleford-based charity which supports young people who have experienced homelessness, and those who are at risk.

Broxtowe Youth Homelessness helps people aged between 16 and 25 to not only prevent homelessness in the first instance, but also to provide those already without a home with the help they need to rebuild their lives and empower them to successfully move on.

The contribution from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes is part of the developer’s Community Fund scheme and will go towards the charity’s Care 2 Work project, which involves working with young people in the care of Nottinghamshire County Council and providing them with employability skills and relevant work placements.

Jessica Brannan, Manager at Broxtowe Youth Homelessness, said: “We had been in discussion about working with Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes on another project, however sadly it wasn’t possible due to COVID-19.

“Due to the relationship we had built with the developer and its interest in the work we do, the company wanted to support us in another way and decided to make a donation. It meant a lot that they had got to know what we do and felt passionate enough to find another way to support us.

“It has been a very difficult period for us with many of our services having to shut and various funding being delayed. We were able to continue offering advice to acute cases but the work we do to prevent homelessness and help people move on from homelessness was paused.

“Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes builds new communities and I think it’s great that it supports the wider community around its developments.”

Broxtowe Youth Homelessness was established in 1984 and has since continued to mitigate the impact of youth homelessness throughout Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Jack Sherman, Marketing Manager at Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes North Midlands, said: “We are very proud to be supporting such a brilliant charity, which is doing an excellent job of helping to tackle homelessness within the local community.

“For many of us, it is easy to forget how fortunate we are in our daily lives, and that’s why it is important to think about how we can help others who are in need of a helping hand.”

Mark Cotes, Managing Director at Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes North Midlands, said: “The work that Broxtowe Youth Homelessness carries out in the East Midlands to help minimise youth homelessness is admirable.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to the Care 2 Work project through our Community Fund scheme. This provides disadvantaged young people with an excellent opportunity to rebuild their lives and develop key skills for employment.”

Eyes on the sky: East Leake pupils benefit from donation of bird watching kits

Pupils at a primary school in East Leake are furthering their efforts to observe and help local birds, thanks to a donation from a local housing developer.

Leading housebuilder David Wilson Homes – which is building a range of properties at The Skylarks in the village – has donated £200 worth of bird watching kits to Brookside Primary School, to enable schoolchildren to continue their birdwatching efforts as spring approaches.

The bird watching kits donated by the housebuilder contained sets of mini binoculars, bird feeders and bird food.

The RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch, which took place throughout January and February, enabled schools to take part in a countrywide project to monitor birds in their local areas.

Brookside Primary School took part in the event, which helped to educate children about local birds and inspire pupils to celebrate the species that regularly flock to their gardens.

Gary Kenny, Headteacher at Brookside Primary School, said: “The donation of bird watching kits and feed has been welcomed here at Brookside School. Our children have enthusiastically watched the bird species visit the feeding stations and learned about the types of birds they share their locality with. Thank you to David Wilson Homes for the kind donation.’’

Rachael Harrison, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “To thank Brookside Primary School pupils for their impeccable efforts during the Big Schools’ Birdwatch, we wanted to pass on our kits which we hope will help attract more birds to their school’s grounds.

“We hope our donation will benefit the school’s birdwatchers and provide a more eco-friendly environment, providing local birds with greater access to vital resources.”
