Tangerine announces record growth as it hits 20th anniversary

As it celebrates its 20th anniversary, creative communications agency Tangerine has announced record growth, with turnover surpassing the £5m mark and headcount doubling over a 12-month period to more than 100 people.

Tangerine’s milestone anniversary comes at a point of ambitious expansion and investment for the agency – which is reflected in the rapid growth. Over the last 24 months, Tangerine has invested significantly in its people, processes and service offering to ensure it remains at the cutting-edge of industry innovation and is well placed to adapt to and capitalise on new market opportunities.

With a focus on being a great place to work that attracts the best talent in the industry, 2022 also marks the 5th anniversary of Tangerine becoming employee-owned.

Founded in 2002 by current Chair Sandy Lindsay MBE, Tangerine is now led by joint CEOs Sam Gregory and Mary Harding. The pair have been with the agency for over 10 years, previously acting as joint MDs before being appointed to the CEO position in 2021 to reflect the agency’s growth and increasingly complex structure.

Commenting on the anniversary, Sandy said: “2022 is a huge year for us, the business is 20 years old, with over 100 people and five years into our employee ownership. It is only because of our team’s enthusiasm, talent, and dedication that we have reached this milestone. I am particularly proud that Tangerine has managed to achieve this fantastic growth over the last 20 years whilst still maintaining our core values.”

Tangerine’s client roster includes established global brands and disruptive market leaders including Specsavers, Dunelm, Wavin, and Ideal Standard. The focus for the business over the next 12 months is to continue to roll out its ambitious growth plans while delivering award-winning work for its clients.

Mary commented: “Reaching our 20th anniversary is a fantastic moment in our history and a significant achievement in the agency world. We’re looking forward to celebrating the milestone, but are also very excited about embarking on the next stages in our growth plans and seeing where that will take us.”

Tangerine Bolsters Senior Team with Two Strategic Hires

Following a phenomenal 2021, employee-owned creative communications agency, Tangerine, has added two new senior team members to its ranks. Rebekah Van Oldenbeek and Alison Parker join the award-winning agency as Head of People & Performance and Operations Manager respectively.

The new appointments come following a record-breaking 2021 for the Manchester-based agency, with the business surpassing £5m in revenue.

New Head of People & Performance, Rebekah Van Oldenbeek, joins Tangerine from restaurant and bar group, The Alchemist, where she was HR Business Partner. Rebekah heads up the newly formed People and Performance department, which will be responsible for developing Tangerine’s Employee Value Proposition, and ensuring it maintains its position as a leading destination for the best talent in the communications industry.

Meanwhile Alison Parker, who was previously Studio Manager at Equator Design, is tasked with supporting the continued development of Tangerine’s award-winning creative offering. With the creative team doubling in size over the last year and winning a number of awards, including several for the ‘It’s Coming Home’ Euros campaign with Specsavers, Tangerine’s creative offering remains central to continued growth plans.

Sam Gregory, Joint CEO of Tangerine, said: “As we celebrate a record-breaking turnover, it’s important that our structure reflects and supports the size and complexity of business we have become. Rebekah and Alison have fantastic credentials and are exactly the type of top talent we want to bring into our team to support our ambitious growth plans.”

Rebekah Van Oldenbeek, Head of People & Performance, added: “At Tangerine, the main focus is always the people behind the innovative and creative work. The agency landscape is fast changing and what industry professionals want and look for in their career is evolving. It’s exciting to join an organisation like Tangerine, that is dedicated to being a great place to work. The low staff turnover and track-record of progression from within speaks for themselves. I’m looking forward to working closely with the senior team to ensure we maintain that position as we grow, while also negotiating a time of significant change within the industry.”

Tangerine Communications Announces New Joint CEOs

Following a period of rapid growth, which has seen the business double in size, specialist creative communications agency, Tangerine, has appointed Sam Gregory and Mary Harding joint CEOs. The move comes as the agency approaches 100 people and embarks on an ambitious next phase of expansion and investment.

Since joining the agency 10 years ago, Gregory and Harding have been steering the business to become an industry leader in creative PR and social media communications. Its client roster includes established global brands and disruptive market leaders like Specsavers, PPG and Pizza Hut Restaurants.

As the agency surpasses the £5 million turnover mark, the pair are now setting their sights on the next period of growth and innovation.

Sam Gregory said: “Entrepreneurial spirit has always sat at our heart but over the last 18 months, we’ve seen this quality come to the fore. We have continued to innovate what we do and how we do it, staying agile and adapting to emerging market opportunities. This, coupled with the sheer tenacity of our people, has seen us grow significantly – strategically guiding our clients’ communications through uncharted territory.”

Mary Harding continued: “Sam and I have always shared a vision for where we want to take the business. We’re not risk averse and like to invest in our people and offer to stay at the cutting edge and deliver award-winning work. This has been a major factor in our ongoing success, together with our strong culture and values, and ethos of only working with like-minded clients.

“Next year is a key milestone for us. The business will be 20 years old, over 100 people and five years into employee ownership. We feel in a very strong position to embark on this next phase of growth and are very excited about where it will take us.”

Gregory continued: “Our vision is to be the agency that top brands want to work with and the most talented people want to work for. Tangerine Doubles the Size of its Creative Team

Employee-owned creative comms agency, Tangerine Partnership, has more than doubled the size of its multi award-winning creative team from 7 to 16, with a flurry of new hires in the past year.

The move is part of a programme of investment across the agency, which has expanded its team to 85 people during a period of significant growth, despite the difficult market conditions of the past 18 months.

Sam Gregory, Joint MD, said: “We’ve completely restructured our agency over the past couple of years to capitalise on emerging communications trends and technologies. For example, we’ve seen huge amounts of success since setting up a ‘round the clock’, always on social media offering. We use behavioural insights and strategic thinking to make sure our clients are speaking to their audiences when they will have the biggest impact. On point creative is an essential part of getting this right and we have raised the bar again with this latest injection of talent.”

The team most recently made headlines with its notable support of the England team at the Euros, on behalf of Specsavers. Its standout, timely response to England’s success in the tournament in the shape of an eyechart inspired ‘it’s coming home’ billboard, has been celebrated across the country.

Sam Gregory added: “We’ve worked extremely hard to build strong relationships with our clients over the years, who trust us to take risks and push creative boundaries, not just with their social media, but across their communications, right from brand and purpose strategy development, through to experiential and media relations activity. This is why brands come to us and investing in our creative team is helping us to take this work to another level. I’m very excited to see where we can go from here.”

As well taking on social media for Specsavers last year, Tangerine added Dunelm and Baxi to its impressive client roster, which also includes, Pizza Hut Restaurants, Jewson and Ideal Standard.

The newly expanded Creative team is headed up by Joint Senior Creative Leads, Sam Swaffield and Martin Kevill, with Laura Perry taking the helm as Head of Creative Operations and Andrew Kaszuba as Art Director, overseeing the Studio.

Baxi Boilers appoint Tangerine Comms to develop consumer social media strategy

Tangerine has added to its roster of household names, following a competitive pitch, to bring on board one of the UK’s leading boiler brands, Baxi.

The team has been appointed to develop a consumer social media strategy as the brand strives to build stronger relationships with its end-user customers. The new remit is a step change for Baxi, whose comms have predominantly been installer focussed, and will now look to raise awareness of the brand, quality, durability and value of its products with consumers.

Activity will include a variety of creative content, brand partnerships, education and advice focused content supported with a paid social ad strategy, all underpinned by a newly created consumer tone of voice and social visual guidelines developed by Tangerine.

Speaking about the appointment, Sian Lewis, marketing manager for Baxi, said: “Tangerine’s insight-led strategic approach really stood out in the pitch process and was the driving force behind selecting them as our consumer social partner.

“The team has developed a robust, insights-based tone of voice coupled with a creative content plan that will set us apart from competitors with this consumer audience. We have already seen how elements of our comms approach will be changed and that has led to a lot of excitement here within the Baxi team about the progress we can make over the next few years.”

Sam Gregory, joint MD of Tangerine said: “As an established brand with over 150 years in the market, we were incredibly excited to receive the brief from the Baxi team.

“The internal team has been so supportive in allowing us to really interrogate the Baxi consumer audiences and challenge the brand to try new channels, routes and content formats.

“Using in-play analysis, we will be constantly listening and analysing how customers behave and interact with Baxi’s content, to evolve and adapt it in real-time to help deliver meaningful results, improve consumer sentiment and support wider installer comms. We look forward to working with the team throughout 2021 and beyond.”
