Which are the top 10 unique wedding venues in London?

There are hundreds of wedding venues across London, and the average cost of a wedding in the capital is now around £20,000.  And, whilst cost will undoubtedly be a factor in your decision of which venue to choose, your ambition to hold it in a truly unique setting may well be THE driving force…and in some cases it might even save you some money!

Of course, there’s a reason why London is so popular with tourists – it’s because it is so steeped in history. You just need to wander through the streets of Central London to see all the historic and iconic buildings within the ‘golden mile’. Few cities in the world can even start to compete with the sense of grandeur, pomp and ceremony of London.

And historic buildings lend themselves perfectly to wedding venues. Many couples strive for their wedding to be unique – a ‘one-off’ – that will live long in the memory, and the actual venue where a wedding is held certainly goes a long way in achieving this.  Of course, as we’ll find in this article, a ‘unique’ wedding venue doesn’t always mean an historic building as such – it can include much more than this!

Cutty Sark

The Cutty Sark is a British Clipper Ship, originally built in 1869.  Located in a dry dock in Greenwich, you can say “I do” in either the Dry Berth or the ‘Tween Deck, providing a unique setting for weddings which will no doubt be memorable for you and all your guests.

Tower Bridge Engine Rooms

Located underneath the south side of this world-famous bridge, the Victorian steam engines provide a stunning backdrop for your wedding.  Can you possibly think of a more unique wedding setting?

Old Billingsgate

This Victorian building was originally called Billingsgate Fish Market in the 19th Century, though today is a unique event and hospitality venue in the City of London.  The Grand Hall can seat up to 1,200 guests for a wedding, with the terrace boasting wonderful views and a spectacular photo backdrop. This is a large event space, so it might be that you need to consider arranging your own wedding furniture hire. Doing an online search for ‘wedding table and chair hire‘ is a good place to start, or the venue itself might be able to point you in the right direction.

Kew Gardens

Enchanting gardens, sophisticated architecture and an iconic venue are guaranteed at a world-famous venue such as Kew Gardens.  Founded in 1840, this botanical garden is widely-recognised as the largest and most diverse collection in the world.  The Nash Conservatory and the Temperate House are just two of the stunning locations for weddings from which you can choose.

ZSL London Zoo

Being able to accommodate anywhere between 45 and 250 wedding guests, London Zoo is most definitely a unique and iconic venue.  Opened to the public in 1847, it now has one of the largest collections of different species in the UK.  There’s no better place for a wedding for those animal lovers amongst you!

The Admiralty

Built in 1871, The Admiralty is a pub located at 66 Trafalgar Square.  It combines a classic pub atmosphere with modern luxury. There are a variety of different and unique rooms within the venue, which you and your guests can enjoy during the day and the evening reception.

Searcys at The Gherkin

Billed as ‘the ultimate wedding venue with a view’, levels 39 and 40 of the iconic Gherkin building are licensed for civil ceremonies of up to 130 guests, with the evening sit-down reception area for up to 260 guests. Enjoy 360 degree views from up high over the City of London, providing a truly unique wedding setting.

Harrow School

Founded in 1572 under a Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I, Harrow is one of the most prestigious schools in the world. Set across 300 acres of stunning countryside, the school actually has 4 licensed civil wedding venues, with the largest being for up to 550 people.  What a great, unique wedding venue!

The Hippodrome Casino

The biggest and busiest casino in London, this unique wedding venue in the West End even boasts a rooftop terrace where your guests can enjoy the cityscape, and a welcome break from the gaming after your wedding!

Natural History Museum

Established in 1881, the museum’s historic spaces offer a unique setting for romantic weddings.  Twelve of the galleries are licensed for civil marriages and civil partnerships for up to 450 guests.

Hopefully, some of these unique venues will provide you with inspiration for YOUR special day.  Wedding planning can take a long time, from the invitations, the dress, wedding cake, catering and cars through to entertainment, wedding chair hire, favours and formalities.  However, once you’ve got the venue sorted, you’ll be amazed at how much everything else falls into place.

One thing to remember, however, is that a unique wedding venue, by its very nature, is not a ‘run of the mill’ venue, and so make sure you work closely with the venue itself and your suppliers to ensure that they are fully aware of any access restrictions or other regulations that might exist in these fantastic settings.

Finally, all that’s left for us to do is to wish you ‘congratulations’, in advance!

Welsh entrepreneur joins impressive list of headline speakers at major convention

Rachael Flanagan, Managing Director of commercial cleaning company Mrs Buckét, was part of an impressive line-up of inspirational speakers, including a Dragon’s Den star, to address guests at a sold-out event at The ICC in Birmingham.

The Entrepreneurs Circle: Getting and Keeping Customers Convention 2022 was attended by over 1200 delegates across the two-day event and saw Rachael join the likes of Dragon’s Den star Sara Davies and BrewDog President and Chief Operating Officer David McDowall.

Rachael herself became a member of Entrepreneurs Circle in the early days of Mrs Buckét and she has since grown the Swansea-headquartered business to employ more than 300 people with a turnover of over £5 million.

The popular event featured practical and actionable content, keynotes from celebrity guests, a full-service business exhibition as well as networking opportunities, focused on helping delegates grow their business to the next level.

Speaking about the convention, Rachael said: “Having joined the Entrepreneurs Circle in the early days of growing my own business, I know first-hand just how helpful it is for connecting people with likeminded businesspeople and other entrepreneurs.

“To be asked to return as a headline speaker was quite surreal, and really made it hit home how far we’ve come since the early days. I was just so pleased to be able to talk to the delegates about my journey and share some of the tips I’ve picked up along the way.”

Following a series of exciting client wins, Rachael now has her sights set on national growth, targeting clients UK-wide, in a bid to push turnover past the £10million mark.

Rachael said: “The subject of the conference really struck a chord with me. When you run your own business, you constantly have your customers at the front of your mind. How to provide the best possible service for the ones you have and what you can be doing to win new ones. As we look to expand the business, it was fascinating to speak to entrepreneurs from the Midlands to gain their insight into Mrs Buckét’s exciting plans.”

The convention also featured the 9th Annual National Entrepreneur Awards, hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr. As well as Rachael, the other headline speakers were: Jamil Quresh, leading expert on performance enhancing psychology; David McDowall, President and Chief Operating Officer at BrewDog; Cathy O’Dowd, the first woman to climb Mount Everest from both sides; Marcus Sheridan, international web marketing guru; and Sara Davies, successful entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den star.

Rachael founded Mrs Buckét in 2005, spending £20 on printed flyers for her new business and distributing them around her local area. Now Mrs Buckét is worth over £5 million, employs over 300 staff members and has won more than 35 awards.

Digital ID must be inclusive and work for all sections of society

Digital ID eco systems are being established across the globe with the aim of improving and simplifying life everyone, but they are still not fully inclusive according to the Open Identity Exchange, and sections of society will struggle to access the services they are entitled to.

The OIX Identity Trust Conference 2022, taking place on September 29th in London, will host a vital panel session on the topic of ‘inclusion’ to explore how it can be achieved.

Attendees to the conference will hear from industry experts on how and why digital ID solutions must be designed for inclusion from the very beginning, rather than as a principle that is considered at the end of the process.

Led by Dr Sarah Walton of Counterpoint Consulting, panellists will include Linsey Banks from the Department of Work and Pensions, Emma Lindley OBE from Women in Identity and Sian Williams from Toynbee Hall.

The panel session will also delve into:

  • the latest actual use case analysis from OIX on the number of people who are ‘ID challenged’ in the UK that are applying for vital services.
  • access to new government data for ID proofing that is being enabled as part of the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill
  • how data alone will not be enough to allow the ID challenged to get a digital ID, why vouching will play a vital role and why OIX’s Digital Vouch with Photo proposal could be a game changer, bringing the process of vouching into the 21st
  • and the need for ‘assisted digital’ to bring people into the ID ecosystem.

Nick Mothershaw, Chief Identity Strategist at OIX, said: “For digital ID to be a success everywhere and for everyone involved, it must be inclusive. Anyone who wants to obtain a digital ID must be able to do so easily. As it stands, we have found that six million people in the UK alone have no passport, driving licence or a sufficient financial data footprint. They are the ID challenged and will struggle to get a digital ID unless more ways to obtain one are made available. The ‘inclusion’ panel at the Identity Trust Conference 2022 will provide a clear view on what need to happen right now.”

Sponsored by VISA, Sopra Steria, Digidentity and OneSpan, and in media partnership with Biometric Update, this year’s conference will take place on Thursday 29th September 2022 at the QEll Centre in London, UK. The cost to attend the conference is £99 plus VAT. You can register HERE.

SUTUS 2022: First space hotel and Cousteau’s International Ocean Station to be explored at the world’s largest space and underwater tourism summit

The first space hotel planned for 2027 and the International Ocean Station which aims to be operational by 2026 are among the projects being presented at SUTUS 2022, the world’s largest space and underwater tourism event.

From 28-30 September, SUTUS – the Space & Underwater Tourism Universal Summit – will bring together prestigious institutions and international stakeholders for the third edition of this pioneering conference at Les Roches Marbella.

Taking place in a hybrid format, with the first day in person and two other virtual days, SUTUS has positioned itself as the benchmark forum for the world’s main space agencies. Last year it attracted NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and these organisations return alongside the International Space University, Space Tourism Society and Swiss Space Tourism.

More than 30 companies will also be present to update on the progress of their initiatives. These include Orbital Assembly, the first hotel with accommodation for tourists in space; Axiom Space, which aims to create cities in space; SpaceVIP, dedicated to “space literacy” and inspiring the next generation of private astronauts; and the Space Tourism Society, focused on “commercialising” the growing range of space experiences (real spaceflight, movies, games and even virtual worlds). Nancy Vermeulen, private astronaut trainer at the Space Training Academy, and retired astronaut commander Susan Kilrain, who will reflect on her experience beyond planet Earth, also feature.

Meanwhile, the still unexplored marine world will be evoked by international speakers such as Fabien Cousteau (grandson of famous undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau) and his International Ocean Station; Aaron Olivera, founder and CEO of Earth 300, a global environmental and science project created in a futuristic superyacht whose main objective is to combat climate change; and Scott Waters, president of Pisces VI Submarine, who will talk about diving tourism in the Canary Islands.

The creation of the Spanish Space Agency (AEE) is the main theme of the Spanish presence at this annual event. Álvaro Giménez Cañete, Special Delegate for AEE, will present the action plan for this new organisation, whose headquarters a dozen cities, including Seville, Tres Cantos (Madrid), Teruel, León, Puertollano (Ciudad Real), and the Canary Islands are currently vying to host.

In addition, SUTUS will welcome renowned speakers such as underwater archaeologist Carlota Pérez Reverte, aspiring ESA astronauts Carmen García-Roger and Jorge Pla-García, and Spanish companies in the space race including Green Moon Project, which is working towards space agriculture and habitability; and Zero 2 Infinity, a company that develops high-altitude balloons to provide access to the area around space and the low-Earth orbit using a capsule and launcher transported by balloons.

Organised by Les Roches Marbella with Medina Media Events, the event will host a demonstration area on campus where representatives of each company participating will be able to present their tourism-related projects, thus opening up the experience to all those visiting the school’s facilities. Virtual attendees and registered companies can follow all sessions via streaming and schedule video meetings with other participants and speakers, as well as visit exclusive online demos. All details, along with the agenda and registration for the three days, are now available at www.sutusummit.com.

Carlos Díez de la Lastra, CEO of Les Roches, said: “We are delighted that we have managed to bring the best agencies and representatives of the most exciting projects in the world to this congress, the most important in the world in the discussion of tourism in the two borders that we have over our heads and under our feet.”

Luxury tourism in Europe, which focuses on the cosmos and water, is worth between 130,000 and 170,000 million euros a year, 22% of the sector’s total income, according to consultancy firm Bain & Company. Last year saw the beginning of a revolution in the history of the cosmos, when Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, flew his rocket to an altitude of 106km for ten minutes, ushering in the era of commercial space travel. The search for both original and personalised experiences is propelling the future of luxury tourism towards new destinations, reaffirming the entrenchment of premium tourism across the world.

Global metalforming event returns to Birmingham after eighteen years away

More than 120 of the world’s leading sheet metal pressworkers will be heading to Birmingham in October as part of a major global manufacturing event.

The 20th ICOSPA (International Council of Sheet Metal Presswork Associations) Congress will return to the UK for the first time in 18 years, with the emphasis firmly on ‘New Tech, New Skills and New Challenges.’

Held over two days (19th-20th October), delegates from China, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, the US and the UK will meet to discuss some of the biggest topics facing their sector, including innovative technologies transforming metalforming, how to deliver sustainable performance, bridging the skills gap and remaining profitable in the face of economic struggles.

They will hear keynote addresses from Francisco J. Riberas (Executive Chairman of Gestamp), Ian Harnett (Chairman of Tevva Electrical Trucks), Antonio Costa, (CEO of Congress Diamond Sponsor Kaizen Institute) and Gianfranco Ruggiero, (Senior Product Manager of Congress Gold Sponsor AutoForm Group).

Insights will also be delivered by Dan Hurd (EY-Parthenon) on global supply chain issues for the future and from Jianguo Lin (Imperial College London) on vehicle light-weighting.

Stephen Morley, President of the Confederation of British Metalforming, is in his fourth and final year as President of ICOSPA.

“This is one of the biggest industrial events in the calendar and we are looking forward to welcoming more than a hundred delegates from across the world to the original birthplace of the industrial revolution.

“Despite the challenges, Birmingham and the UK still has a strong and prosperous sheet metal and presswork sector and there is an appetite to understand the new technologies that are developing and how we can make the most of them.

“Our congress is headlined by some of the world’s leading voices in the sector, including the man who shaped the creation of Gestamp and the Chairman of one of the UK’s pioneering manufacturers of electric trucks.”

He continued: “This is very much a global event and is set to attract sheet metal pressworkers, suppliers, academics and metallurgists all keen to share best practice, views and ‘hacks’ on how to move forward as an industry. There’s a limited number of spaces still available if people are interested.”

The International Council of Sheet Metal Presswork Associations is the main platform for the cross-national exchange of the sheet metal engineering industry.

Over the past 50 years, the six member associations have represented the voices of over 12,300 companies and 600,000 employees throughout the world.

This year’s congress, which is also sponsored by Dayton Progress and AutoForm, starts on Wednesday 19th with two company visits to Brandauer in Birmingham and Gestamp’s new factory in Four Ashes, Wolverhampton.

The next day will see the National Metalforming Centre in West Bromwich host the main Congress, followed by the evening dinner at The Grand Hotel in Birmingham.

Stephen went on to add: “Our company visits are always a highlight of proceedings as delegates love getting out on the shopfloor and seeing how different firms operate.

“In Brandauer, we have one of the region’s most progressive and exciting SMEs and a manufacturer that is leading the way in the production of thin gauge laminations for electrification.

“Gestamp is a major tier 1 automotive supplier, and it will be great to see how its landmark new factory has come together to create a truly world class manufacturing environment.”

The presidency of ICOSPA will be passed to the Japan Metal Stamping Association during the two-day celebrations.

Other organisations present include the Precision Metalforming Association, The Confederation of Chinese Metalforming Industry, FIM Metaux en Feuilles and Industrieverband Blechumformung.

World Suicide Prevention Day: Raising awareness to end the stigma

World Suicide Prevention Day is on 10th September, and Wellingborough-based suicide prevention and mental health charity, We Mind & Kelly Matters, will be hosting their first awareness day event at Harrowden Hall.

It is estimated that in the UK, 17 people die by suicide every day, which is more than 6,800 a year. Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45, but suicides among teenage girls and young women have almost doubled in recent years. This year’s theme, Creating Hope Through Action, is a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide, and aims to remind us that our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who are struggling.

We Mind & Kelly Matters CEO Sherry Adams said: “We believe in the power of talking to someone. It can be the first step to reaching out for help and support as well as being the source of healing and recovery. Some may find this extremely painful and difficult, but we are here to help them every step of the way, so that people will know what to do if they reach crisis point.”

The event will run from 10.30am until 1.30pm and will be packed with information and guest speakers, as well as information about the charity and how it can help those in need. The session will conclude with some shared lived experiences, and a moment to remember all those impacted by suicide.

Guests will also be able to meet some members of the Loneliest Road Challenge – which will see 23 Kelly’s Heroes taking on a gruelling 30-day, 52,000 miles cycle ride across Europe and the USA – and add their own mileage to the total by having a go at beating one of the team in a static bike challenge.

Sherry added: “Each and every suicide is devastating and has a profound impact on those around them. However, by raising awareness, reducing the stigma around suicide, and encouraging well informed action, we can reduce instances of suicide around the world. World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of suicide and to promote action through proven means that will reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts globally.”

The charity is also hoping to set a new world record and is aiming for 20,000 pledges between September 10 and October 10, which is World Mental Health Day, by asking people to use their voice and pledge to Stamp Out Stigma surrounding suicide. The charity wants to normalise the importance of having discussions, exploring suicidal thoughts, and make it safe for people to speak up.
